You can find anything on Youtube if you know where to look…Music Videos, History Lessons, Movie Trailers, How-To videos, TV Episodes, and especially humorous rants from unknown people with very interesting opinions (like me).

But what happens when Youtube Moderators decide to get rid of one of your favorite videos? What if the Channel gets suspended for copyright infringement or some other reason? Basically, You’re Screwed…unless you saved the Video to your computer.

There are a few ways to accomplish a Youtube Videos Download, but you should know what you’re downloading first.

Youtube stores its videos in FLV format (Flash Video Format). This means that, even if you manage to download the file to your computer…you’ll need an FLV player OR a way to convert FLV files to AVI or MPEG.

This is important because FLV is not a commonly used Format. If you want to transfer a youtube video to your ipod, PSP, or Mobile phone then you’ll have to find a FLV converter before you can do so.

Now that you know what you’re downloading the real question is how to download it.

I tend to stay away from sites that offer “free Video Downloads” because they’re generally VERY slow (sometimes taking as long as an hour to get one 10 minute video) and are trying to promote FLV converter software. You CAN use this method, but be aware that it’s not really free…the software trial usually only allows you to convert 1 or 2 videos before you have to purchase it, or it leaves the name of the software package in the middle of your video while it’s playing. This is not a good option.

Use Internet Download Manager (IDM) to download videos from youtube. IDM is a download manager. Also IDM is the fastest download manager I have ever seen.

Download RealPlayer 11 for your Operating System. You can use the following link to download:

After downloading the file, start to installation by double clicking on the executable file and following the installation steps. When you come to the installation step (as shown below), make sure to check the check box for “Download & Recording”. Continue with the installation process.

After installation is finished, open the Real Player. Go to Tools->Preferences. Click on the “Download & Recording” tab from the “Category“list on the left hand side of the window (as shown below)

Select “Only on mouse-over” radio button. You can also change here the directory path where you want the downloaded video to be saved. Click the “OK” button. Close the internet browser and then again reopen.

Now to download the video from the YouTube, start to play the video you want to download on YouTube. Point the mouse cursor to the top right corner of the screen and click the download button.

The download of the gets started. Real Player can download multiple files simultaneously. The file is saved with “.flv” extension which can be later player by RealPlayer or VLC. Happy downloading
