You know it is the end of the season when you are not getting nervous about matches anymore. Federer has cruised through his first two rounds in Basel, swiftly beating Seppi 3 and 3 today. That man gets the worst draws. Wawrinka overcame Ljubicic in a tough three setter, and is due to meet Marin Cilic next. Cilic has an outsider’s chance to get to the WTFs. He has to win Basel though. A field with both Roger and Novak. Mmm. Good luck with that one.

Tsonga retired against Youzhny this morning in Valencia. I guess this makes his WTF chances basically nil. Monfils also lost to Garcia-Lopez (embaressing). Verdaso cruised and Simon beat my man Berdych in three sets.

Over in Bali, the pretty Sabine Lisicki lost to Rezai. Wickmayer, Stosur, and Bartoli all won.

Can you just sense my enthusiasm for these end of year tournaments through my blogging? Yeah, though so. The men really should be playing the WTFs right now. Season. Too. Long.

Speaking of shirts… Mandy Murray is ditching Fred Perry for adidas. Cannot WAIT to see what colourful creations they pop on him. Mandy in orange? Mandy in blue? Mandy in lime green? Very excited.

I’m sure y’all have read Archie comics… Now theres this dude named Moose (he dates Midge) in it. Yes. you got it.. he’s the dumb athelete.. a jock.. an all brawn and no brain…I have come to realize (after all my awake hours spent usefully infront of the TV and Youtube), that “Moose” is not simply fictional. I have two sportspersons who fit the Moose description perfectly.

1. Mikhail Youzhny– US open semifinalist, Australian Open quarter finalist, 8th ATP rank in 2008. With these credentials, you are already famous. But you always need something to ’spice’ it up. You are playing a match against a virtually unknown  opponent.. a match which you should generally win with your hands tied to your feet.

Okay so youre having a bad day on court. Third set and youre down by one. Looong rally.. which you lose.Not uncommon in tennis. (Frustration follows)

I’ve seen it happen. Its not uncommon.

Il francese Jo-Wilfried Tsonga con 11 ace è un’ottima percentuale al servizio,ha battuto il russo Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-3 aggiudicandosi il torneo Atp di Tokyo e conquistando così il terzo trofeo ATP stagionale.

GGL @ 2.42 – Update – WIN – G Garcia-Lopez (ESP) d [Q] M Youzhny (RUS) 75 63

Amazingly GGL is ranked 10 spots higher and has a 3-0 record against Youzhny, yet is still a 2.42 underdog. Yes, their past matches were all on clay but GGL’s hardcourt record this season is 6-6, Youzhny’s? 6-7. Overall Youzhny’s hardcourt record is slightly better but not by much. GGL is coming off a good win against Verdasco and coming up against someone who he has a 3-0 record over will do wonders for his confidence. He will definitely come out swinging.

Isner @ 1.69 - Update – LOSS – M Youzhny (RUS) d J Isner (USA) 67(8) 61 63 – Last few weeks have caught up to Isner and he couldn’t continue his form.

Tough match to pick, Youzhny upset Cilic in the first round so his confidence will be on the up whereas Isner easily dispatched fellow American Jesse Levine. Isner has played alot of tennis in the last few weeks and has been in good form on the hardcourts, hopefully he has not run out of steam. If Isner can get more than 60-65% first serves in then I can’t see him losing this one.

Youzhny @ 2.80 – Update – WIN – M Youzhny (RUS) d [14] M Cilic (CRO) 46 76(4) 61

Youzhny has had the better of Cilic over the last few matches and Cilic has been down on form lately so this is really good value.

(Straight) 3 Set Match @ 2.20 – Update – WIN – M Youzhny (RUS) d R Kendrick (USA) 75 36 61

Both are decent players and have had some tough matches recently. Kendrick took Murray to 4 sets at Wimbledon and Youzhny had some tough 3 setters in Gstaad and lost to SW19 QFinalist JC Ferrero. This should be an even match, so I’ve tipped this to go all the way.

Molte le sorprese in una giornata intensissima ed interminabile. Oltre alla serba esce anche Youzhny, testa di serie n.3. In serata, la Safina sconfigge una Mauresmo finalmente competitiva.

Questo è quello che viene in mente dopo che il terzo match della giornata (il secondo femminile) sul campo centrale era finito al tie-break del terzo set.

E anche il terzo e ultimo match femminile della giornata finirà al terzo set, solo che il tie-break lo giocheranno nel primo set.

Il programma prevedeva 3 match WTA e 3 ATP. Ora di inizio le 11.00 con Dementieva Srebotnik. Nessuno si aspettava che alle 23, ben dodici ore dopo, Safina e Mauresmo stessero iniziando il terzo set e l’ultimo match previsto Andreev- Chardy dovesse essere spostato sul campo 1.

Può un match di due ore e mezza giocato come sempre all’ultimo respiro fra queste due ragazze, decidersi su un solo vero errore gratuito? Si, quello che la Srebotnik fa nel tie-break, sul 3 a 2 Dementieva, ma con la slovena al servizio. Tira un dritto, nemmeno forte, all’altezza della linea di servizio, largo di un metro abbondante. E lei che per tutto l’incontro aveva avuto un atteggiamento positivo, si demoralizza per il mini-break concesso alla russa. Il linguaggio del corpo dice che la sua partita è finita lì. Si è spenta. Dementieva si porta 5 a 2 e poi serve 2 ace per chiudere una battaglia di 2 ore e 32 minuti.

Match che all’inizio sembrava potesse essere breve. Elena voleva prendersi la rivincita dopo aver perso gli ultimi due incontri con la slovena.
Aveva vinto il primo set in 42 minuti in cui c’era stato il primo NIET! Urlato dopo 26 minuti per un suo doppio fallo, per poi fare subito dopo un ace.
Alcuni scambi conclusi a rete dalla Srebotnik, 3 risposte fulminanti della russa. La madre della Dementieva, seduta dal lato opposto al marito, sembrava respirare regolarmente e non essere troppo tesa. Invece nel secondo set, Katarina Srebotnik si portava 2 a 1 con un break, la russa cominciava sia i suoi soliloqui sia la sua battaglia con i calzini.

Mamma Vera iniziava ad avere il viso tirato (conosce la figlia, sapeva già cosa sarebbe successo), il padre era un po’ più rigido sulla sedia. Solo i due allenatori sembravano tranquilli.
E poi c’erano gli applausi di una o dell’altra giocatrice sul punto fatto con colpi straordinari alla fine di scambi tiratissimi. Addirittura, la Srebotnik urla un BRAVO alla Dementieva, mentre tentava inutilmente di raggiungere una palla a fil di riga. Poi subisce il contro break e ne fa un altro per portare a casa il secondo set.
Due giocatrici corrette, sportive che si rispettano molto.

Nel terzo set il pubblico, scarsissimo, nel primo e parte del secondo (anche perché alle 11, ma quanti possono venire a vedersi un po’ di tennis? Infatti nella tribuna di fronte all’arbitro ci sono 9 spettatori e 9 fotografi. Gli uomini della sicurezza per una volta non guadano gli spettatori, che praticamente non ci sono, ma la partita) si fa sentire e sostiene più forte Elena.
Sul 5 pari, servizio Dementieva, uno scambio lunghissimo giocato soprattutto sui nervi e sulla diagonale del rovescio, finisce con palla tirata fuori da una Srebotnik in apnea e una Dementieva che si inginocchia per lo sforzo fatto. Scena inusuale.
Arrivano al tie-break con mamma e papà Dementieva tesi, coach delle giocatrici tesi e spettatori che ritmano il sostegno ad Elena.

Il tie-break dura 5 punti, poi c’è l errore gratuito della Srebotnik e l’urletto di gioia per la rivincita delle Dementieva.

Gabashvili – Youzhny 75 46 76(1)

Ore 13.30 .
Circa 15 minuti dopo entrano in campo il russo Youzhny (uno dei più bei rovesci del tennis, secondo me) contro un altro russo Gabashvili.
Dovrebbe vincere Youzhny. Ma qui i russi si conoscono da quando erano bambini. Hanno giocato tante volte contro da junior, e il risultato a sorpresa può arrivare. E poi Youzhny non vuole vincere. Fa il break e si porta in testa. Gioca benissimo, da favola, in maniera orrida, errori imbarazzanti, spreca, recupera e poi dall’altra parte della rete non c‘è proprio un giocatore “pizza-e-fichi”. Se poi, anche Gabashvili dirà di aver giocato una delle più belle partite, ecco che per Misha Youzhny la vita si complica e parecchio. Ci vogliono ancora due ore e e mezza. E ancora un tie-break nel set finale. Vinto 7 a 2 ma dal giocatore che non ti aspetti, Gabashvili.

Cibulkova – Ivanovic 36 63 76(4)

E sono quasi le 17.00
Entrano in campo Ivanovic e Cibulkova. Riuscirà la Ivanovic a vincere un match?
Per il momento vince il primo set. Il pubblico è dalla sua parte. Ma non basta. L’Ivanovic continua ad andare a corrente alternata. La Cibulkova no. Piccolina ma tosta non molla e si porta a casa il secondo set. Inizio del terzo set. L’arbitro sbadiglia. Si arriva sul 4 pari. Ivanovic serve al centro un ace. O così sembra a tutti tranne alla Cibulkova che chiede la verifica dell’Occhio di Falco. Con sorpresa, la palla risulta larga. Sembra sorpreso anche l’arbitro che guarda verso il collega e i tecnici del Hawk-Eye come a dire ma siete sicuri? Non sbadiglierà più. E la Ivanovic serve la seconda e perde il punto. A tratti la serba gioca bene e riesce ad annullare le due palle break. Con un ace, 5 a 4. Nel suo box ci sono quattro persone tutte sedute una accanto all’altra : hitting partner, mamma, allenatore e un amico. In quello della Cibulkova solo allenatore. Al servizio la slovacca commette un doppio fallo e c’è un applauso convinto del pubblico a sostenere Ana. Poi la Cibulkova butta in rete un dritto e ci sono due match point per la Ivanovic. Uno l’annulla la slovacca, l’altro lo sbaglia la serba, che sembra aver perso completamente la convinzione quando gioca il dritto. Fino a poco tempo fa era il suo colpo, quello che gli dava o i punti oppure metteva in difficoltà le avversarie. Era una frustata. Adesso quando lo forza lo sbaglia. Perde anche il servizio con un doppio fallo sul break point. E’ irriconoscibile rispetto alla giocatrice che a maggio vinse Roland Garros. In pochissimi minuti la Cibulkova passa dall’essere già in doccia da sconfitta a servire per il match.
E invece un sussulto di orgoglio della Ivanovic, che va 0-40. La Cibulkova decide di “giocare alla Ivanovic” e anche lei fa doppio fallo. E così anche in questo match si va al tie-break. Ma se la Dementieva, terza testa di serie si era salvata, la Ivanovic, quarta testa di serie, non ce la fa. Anche il nastro non le da una mano. La palla lo colpisce, si ferma per un momento e poi decide di cadere dal lato della serba. Cibulkova si procura 2 match point. Le basta il primo.

Mathieu – Stakhovsky 63 62

Per fortuna degli organizzatori è un match in due set.

Lo confesso, non ho visto un punto.
Cercavo di riprendermi dallo choc di aver dovuto mangiare una fetta di pizza che mi era stata offerta e non sarebbe stato educato dir di no. Anche se appena ho visto cosa avrei dovuto assaggiare il mio palato urlava ‘No! No! No!’
Sopra un incolpevole base di pizza avevano messo: carne macinata, salame piccante, prosciutto cotto, pezzi di pollo, salsa di pomodoro e simil-mozzarella.
E’ stata una tortura fisica e mentale.

Safina – Mauresmo 67(2) 64 64

Ore 21.30 circa. Inizia il match della Safina e la Mauresmo.
Dinara è la giocatrice che da fine aprile ad oggi ha giocato con più continuità di tutte.
Ha vinto 4 tornei e giocato 3 finali di cui una a Roland Garros e l’altra alle Olimpiadi.
A sorpresa i punti li fa più che altro per gli errori della Mauresmo. Che nel bene e ne male detta il gioco. Nel box della francese c’è Santoro a farle diciamo da ‘assistente-coach-amico’ per questa partita. Chissà se sono le prove generali per una futura collaborazione.
Il gioco non è bello. Fra un urlaccio della Mauresmo su errori che gli fanno sprecare molte occasioni e urlacci della Safina perché non riesce ad imporre il suo gioco, si arriva al tie-break.
Forse che loro sono da meno di chi ha giocato prima? Mai!
Ameliè lo gioca bene. Anzi si direbbe che di sera giochi decisamente meglio. Mentre qualche raccattapalle già dormicchia, Sul 3 a 1 la francese chiede la pallina, il ragazzino le porta l’asciugamano. C’e da capirlo è da questa mattina che smista palline e asciugamani.
Amelie non si scompone, aspetta la pallina e poi piazza un servizio vincente.
E sarà un servizio vincente anche quello con cui chiederà il primo set per 7 punti a 2.
Nel secondo set ci sono break e contro break, un “Com’on” urlato dalla Mauresmo quasi a squarciagola su un altro servizio vincente. (ma non è che si è dimenticata come si fanno i doppi falli, fra primo e secondo set ne fa 8). Un gruppetto di cinque spettatori con maglietta rossa e bandiera russa stampata sul davanti incomincia a sostenere più rumorosamente Dinara. Una spettatrice si irrita e gli dice di stare zitti che disturbano. A dir la verità loro gridano DI-NA-RA e poi RAS-SI-A solo fra un punto e l’altro. Si vede che qui non hanno bene idea di cosa significhi il tifo esagerato.

Safina si porta 5 a 2. Ma questa Mauresmo, per quanto ancora lontana da quella dei tempi migliori, è in netta ripresa. E infatti quando gioca bene, Dinara va in crisi. La francese recupera fino al 5 a 4 e servizio. Gioca bene a tratti, ma sbaglia tutto proprio in questo game. Lo perde a zero con un ultima discesa a rete e una risposta della russa che manda la palla ad allacciare le scarpe ad Ameliè.

Alle 23.05 comincia il terzo set.
Per fortuna che l’ultimo match di Andreev lo hanno già spostato su un altro campo. L’ultimo set è la copia del secondo. Dinara che fa il break e si porta 5 a 3 e servizio. Mauresmo, gioca un gran game, fa il contro break. Safina si ricorda che è sempre la sorella di Marat e a sua immagine e somiglianza, spacca la racchetta e si prende il warning. La Mauresmo ancora una volta potrebbe rientrare in partita, ma ancora una volta è sul suo servizio che i nervi hanno ancora la meglio. Come direbbe mia nonna,alla Mauresmo manca sempre un soldo per fare una lira.
Ci va vicina. Tanto, ma mai abbastanza. E’ quasi mezzanotte quando l’arbitro annuncia il punteggio finale.
Dinara risponde a chi gli chiede come mai ha giocato così male ‘No lo so. Non lo so proprio’. Forse perché dall’altra parte della rete c’era una giocatrice che una volta sapeva giocare molto bene a tennis?

Una giornata di quasi 13 ore di tennis.
C’era una volta il tennis femminile,dove nei primi turni, le teste di serie vincevano quasi sempre in due set e in un ora scarsa di gioco. Era un altro tennis. Era un altro gioco.
C’era una volta, appunto.

I found a very interesting point in this article from tennis.com.  Is Federer’s racket the weakness in his tennis bag? The point is that Federer’s old style mid-size or small size racket is very difficult to handle because of the small sweet spot. The surface area of this spot is significantly smaller than on the more regular 100 inch rackets. Those 10 inches could have been what ultimately decided the Wimbledon final. In darkness and wind, there’s no doubt that a larger racket would do any player good. The difference could be a slight miss or a complete shank into the crowd. For the best player in the world, you would think that he could perhaps hit the ball in his sleep. Well.. he cannot. There’s a reason Federer watches the ball longer and better than any other player. The 90 inch head is hard to handle and takes Federer’s talent magnitude.

Many will probably contradict this point saying that it’s just like anything else. If you have used ONE type of racket your whole career, it won’t do you any good to switch. Same might apply to Federer. Question being, will he still be able to hit his forehand as hard as he does now? Will he be able to create the same angles, spins, volleys…etc.? Probably not. He will have to work hard to be satisfied with the strokes.

On the other end, there’s some truth to the point in the article. Wouldn’t you think that Federer could beat you with a frying pan if he wanted? Roddick has done some trials in his charity events, hitting the ball like there was nothing to it. All I’m saying is that I think Federer’s talent is so big and his clean game is so good that any racket he picks up, he can play almost just as well with. It always takes some time to get used to, but I assume he would be one of the best to adjust as well. From the sound of Federer’s view on this issue, it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll switch any time soon. But it would be interesting to see how a Fed-Rafa racket swap would turn out. My tip would be Federer winning 0 and 0, because of Nadal hitting every other ball on the frame. Federer, on the other hand doesn’t need to change anything to be able to hit his normal shots. U see?

And one big point, which isn’t disputed anymore, is the fact that YES, Federer would have beaten Nadal more on clay, if he’d had a few more square inches. The only shot that Federer hates (when playing only Nadal it seems) is the high hit backhand. The 4800 rpm spin into Federer’s backhand at nose height, is VERY hard to get back with some decent pace. Running around is Federer’s desperate answer, but clay monster Nadal will outrun him on them. Evindently, Federer would have appreciated a bigger sweet spot on those occasions. If Youzhny can hit such a good backhand with a 100 incher, so could Federer.

I don’t think Federer would get any help now on the hard stuff in N.America, but switching racket on clay, or making a custom CLAY racket for the guy sounds interesting. If I was him, after 3 consecutive RG final losses, I would certainly do anything to try and improve my chances against the RAFA. If we get a Fed-Rafa final in Cincy, and Federer misses many on his backhand side, I’m going to conclude that the theory is at least close to true.

Q. Anh đã gặp vấn đề với chân bao giờ chưa? Anh đã gặp phải vấn đề tương tự như thế này chưa?

RAFAEL NADAL: Tôi nghĩ bây giờ chúng tôi đã có điều thứ nhất, còn điều thứ 2 thì sẽ rất khó khăn.

Q. Anh có ăn mừng vào đêm qua kot?
RAFAEL NADAL: Chắc chắn là tôi ăn mừng. Nhưng tôi thi đấu hôm nay. Tôi ko thể ra ngoài để ăn mừng mà là tại nhà

Q. Anh đã thắng 21/24 điểm trên lưới. Điều đó có ý nghĩa gì với anh?
RAFAEL NADAL: Tôi volley ko thể tin được

Ladies First…Final:VENUS WILLIAMS Vs SERENA WILLIAMS, another final showdown between the williams sister might be in the offing…but looking at thw way the top seeds have faltered at this years championships anything could happen here with 2nd seed JELENA JANKOVIC,4th seed SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA,5th seed ELENA DEMENTIEVA waiting to cash in on the others expense. Yet another wibledon title for VENUS…hmmn just might be right.

Now the most interesting part…Men’s Final: ROGER FEDERRER Vs RAFAEL NADAL, this one was quite easy though,but still anything could happen here too…Roger has HEWITT to deal with and Rafa has to overcome the YOUZHNY effect to reach the top 8…ANDY MURRAY & MARAT SAFIN are in pretty good form but it will take a little somthin to derail the FEDEX and runover RAFA!!!…Who wins it…Ahem!!! You still ask this question after watching the FRENCH OPEN Final…RAFA ofcourse…Go RAFA!!!!

Situémonos en el siguiente video. El tenista Mikhail Youzhny (parte inferior del video) restaba para igualar a cinco juegos el set definitivo de su partido con Nicolás Almagro en el Master Series de Miami. El ruso perdió ese punto pero acabó ganando el partido y Almagro declaró que la actitud de su rival en la pista le había desconcentrado.

El siguiente video también tiene relación con el “canturreo” y de forma indirecta con otro video sobre tenis que dejé hace un par de meses en este post en el que se escuchaba al comentarista insultar a sus compañeros de televisión durante la publicidad.
