A Mikage piace la cucina. Non la cucina nel senso che le piace mangiare: la cucina come luogo. Perché per Mikage non c’è posto al mondo che lei ami più della cucina. E non le importa certo dove si trovi o come sia fatta. Basta che sia una cucina, magari di quelle vissute, tutte piene di strofinacci e di coltelli e di piastrelle, con un frigo enorme pieno di provviste: insomma, un posto dove si faccia da mangiare. Lei sta bene lì. Dopo la morte di sua nonna Mikage è sola, non ha più nessuno. Tranne la cucina, la sua cucina.
Dopo aver perso i genitori, Mikage viveva insieme alla nonna. Quando anche lei è morta, Mikage non aveva più una famiglia. Era sola. E mentre se ne sta lì, distrutta, coi pensieri annullati nel dolore, distesa accanto alla sua cucina, bussano alla porta. Va ad aprire e si trova davanti un ragazzo. Yuichi. Vieni a vivere con noi, sarà dura adesso per te, non farti pregare, passa da noi stasera, ti ho disegnato una mappa, non puoi sbagliare. D’accordo, dice Mikage. E di sera esce e se ne va dai Tanabe che abitano in un appartamento di un alto palazzo, bello, accogliente, pieno di piante. Nella casa, quando scende la sera, i raggi del sole che tramonta filtrano dalle grandi finestre e illuminano le piante creando una atmosfera sognante, quasi surreale, di una pace infinita. Il divano è così grande e morbido che quando ti ci metti non vorresti alzarti più. E la cucina, poi. Mikage se ne innamora.
Dopo una prima, piccola resistenza Mikage resterà lì, in quella casa, insieme a Yuichi e sua madre Eriko, che in realtà non è sua madre ma suo padre che ha deciso di diventare donna dopo la perdita della moglie, la vera madre di Yuichi. Lei morì quando lui era ancora così piccolo da non conservare ricordi. Ha solo una foto di lei, lui, e niente altro. Eriko è bellissima, bizzarra, e ama le piante. La casa ne è piena: per Eriko hanno un grande valore. Le persone che vogliono farcela da sole, dopo aver passato terribili momenti, di quelli che ti distruggono dentro, che ti lasciano senza più speranze e con una disperazione addosso che credi non se ne andrà mai più, ecco, quelle persone dovrebbero prima di tutto curare qualcosa che cresce: magari proprio una pianta. Facendolo si capiscono i propri limiti. Aiutare e curare qualcosa che pian piano cresce è un punto di partenza. Per tornare a vivere. Capisci Mikage? Sì, credo di capire, Eriko. Credo di capire.
Chi nella vita non conosce almeno una volta, una sola, la disperazione, e non capisce quali siano le cose che valgono veramente, quelle importanti, quelle che contribuiscono a fare di te quello che sei, diventa adulto senza avere mai capito che cosa sia veramente la felicità. E senza aver mai compreso ciò che si cela al di sotto della pelle, dietro gli occhi, dentro il cuore. Perché la disperazione, il dolore cieco e solitario che da dentro ti divora e ti attira a sé, maledettamente irresistibile, e dolce, come al più bello e importante incontro della tua vita, ti lascia svuotato di tutto ciò che sei e ti riempie solo di sofferenza. Perché è così facile lasciarsi andare. Basta poco. E il dolore, quello grande, vero, e terribile o unisce o divide.
Mikage resterà in casa Tanabe per sei mesi, poi se ne va a vivere da sola, lascia l’università e dà sfogo alla sua sfrenata passione per la cucina diventando assistente di una nota professionista del mestiere. Per lei la cucina ha sempre significato la protezione, il calore familiare a cui ogni uomo o donna o vecchio o bambino ha diritto. Un rifugio, un luogo dove sentirsi sempre a casa, anche quando una casa non ce l’hai più. Per Mikage, la cucina era la salvezza.
Ma una notte riceve una chiamata. È Yuichi: è morta combattendo, dice. Eriko è morta, uccisa da un pazzo che la perseguitava. Era successo tanto tempo prima, quando l’autunno stava diventando inverno. Lui non era riuscito a dirglielo. A dirle che anche lui ora era solo, proprio come lei. E Mikage e Yuichi sono due ragazzi soli, adesso. Due ragazzi che non hanno più nessuno tranne se stessi al mondo, e lo sanno, lo avvertono chiaramente che i loro destini non potranno più allontanarsi e perdersi in strade lontane. Ma non se lo dicono. Perché ammettere qualcosa, qualunque essa sia, è difficile, più difficile e dolorosa che lasciarsela dentro a roderti l’anima.
La solitudine di Mikage e Yuichi sarà la loro ultima tappa prima di diventare grandi, adulti. Uomo e donna. E la loro storia, fatta di perdite indelebili e dolorose, li convincerà a non perdersi, a cercarsi, anche se la distanza che li separa è grande. Perché avere qualcuno accanto, magari qualcuno che ha passato le stesse cose che hai dovuto sopportare, può completare quel vuoto in cui avevi creduto di sprofondare, senza mai più vedere la luce. Quel vuoto che è ancora lì, che non se ne andrà mai. Mai in due, quel vuoto non sembra poi così terribile e profondo.
E Mikage e Yuichi l’hanno capito.

NOTE: I, personally, use the term “yaoi” as a generic term for the Boys’ Love/Shonen-ai/Yaoi genre. I am not up for arguing/debating about the usage of the terms. I do ask please avoid using the term “shonen-ai” in any comments on this review, as the use of that term is a huge pet peeve of mine. =] Thank you!

Review: I first saw an advertisement for Body Language in the back of one my other yaoi light novels (or “illustration novels” as some like to call them). Being the yaoi fanatic I am, the advertisement made me quickly gain interest, along with a one line summary I read that basically told you that Kanae was often mistaken as a playboy, despite he was still a virgin (and I personally enjoy stories like that).

I finally had the chance to buy it, I finished it, and now I’m reviewing it!

The book was decent. It was a quick read, the sex scenes were quite well written, and several parts gave me a good laugh. However, those were really the only good points of the book. The rest…aren’t quite the best points. They’re not necessarily bad, but they’re not too favourable either.

The first problem I experienced right off the bat was the writing style. Perhaps it was just the way the story was written for the English edition, but I didn’t really like it. The writing (specifically the dialogue) was far too feminine to be a story about two guys and the entire pace of the book felt rushed. Some parts went into detail, while others were just simply said something along the lines of “they did it again”. The dialogue between the two boys seemed a bit more than partially unbelievable (especially from Yuichi’s side, aside from the beginning of the story). It gave off a strong sense of femininity and lacked any sort of masculinity. To me, this was okay for Kanae, as he was the uke and admittedly the one with the feminine frame. Yuichi on the other hand, was described to have a more masculine frame…and frankly, the feminine-written dialogue was very unsuited for his character.

My second problem with the book was the amount of smut that was in it and how much it lacked of a good plot. The story itself could have been better if it started from when Kanae and Yuichi became friends, rather than starting at the point where Kanae half-jokingly offered himself to Yuichi. Now, I’m not opposed to smut in yaoi (since yaoi usually contains a lot of it, but contrary to popular belief of being pure smut, has heart string pulling plots to go along with the smut), but I felt that it wasn’t handled well. Though the sex scenes were written quite well, I felt that there could have been possibly more passion here or there or some sort of element to help reach those heartstrings. However, this book lacked to do that.

My third problem had to do with the artwork. The first thing I notice is that on the cover, it looks like Yuichi’s (the one on the left) collar/shirt isn’t fully coloured in, which rather bugs me. The second thing I notice throughout the book’s artwork is how often Yuichi and Kanae seemed to be so disproportionate to each other. Like, Yuichi will have this monstrous sized head, while Kanae will have this tiny ball sized head (obviously, I’m exaggerating…but you get the point).

Overall, as I said in the beginning, this book was decent. Unforuntately, the cons outweighed the pros and I lacked enjoyment of the book. Perhaps it was because I wasn’t in the mood for pure smut (like I am occasionally), that it didn’t meet my expectations, or both? Either way…the pure smuttiness and the feminine, rushed writing did not catch me.

For those who love pure smut and really could careless about plot, I highly recommend this.

For those who enjoy smut, but would like a good plot, I suggest you skip this.

For those who sometimes are in the mood for smut, I suggest you buy this and save it for when you lack smut.

- Feminine & rushed writing was a huge turn off for me.
- Sex scenes were well done!
- Too much smut without a good plot.
- Failed to meet my expectations.
