It’s that time of the year; almost. Lists. Trends. The best of 2009. And the good people from Bozar Shop (Brussels) have proven to be trendy indeed, by pointing out Papercraft – Design and art with paper to me. Because I happened to have read in Creative Review ’s The year in review-issue about paper being one of thé trends of 2009. So yes, definitely, my book of the month for december has to be this one: a lavish overview of what contemporary artists have managed to do with paper. You’ll find a couple of fine examples after the jump.

Origami? Think again. There’s much more to be done with paper. It enjoys something of a renaissance amongst young artists, these days. You’ll be amazed at all the possibilities it offers for an artist when you’ll be flipping the pages of Papercraft. The book explores the astounding possibilities of paper, and it gathers the most extraordinary creations, from small objects to large-scale art installations. It truly makes you look at paper in another way. It comprises, of course, work of Yulia Brodskaya, who’s been one of the artist’s of 2009, according to Creative Review. The book also includes a dvd with templates for those of you who want to have a go at it too, and a couple of stop-motion animations.

‘Papercraft’, published by Gestalten, 44 euro, is available at Bozar Shop (Brussels). It can be ordered at the Gestalten-site too, here. They even have a podcast about the book, here.

I have been influenced by many different designers and just other peoples work through the project,

I have been influenced by many different designers and just other peoples work through the project, which has then help me develop ideas and concepts.

I was going to develop part of a workshop I did with David, with our shoe box collection, by creating a screen print of one of our line drawings. Then I remembered a piece of work I had seen by Helen Musselwhite, created by paper folding.

I had seen it in Creative Review and had also read a bit about how paper folding has become popular. So instead of creating a screen print for this certain piece, I decided to try a bit of paper folding.

Then funny enough just a day or two later I read some more about paper folding in the current issue of CR and there was some beautiful work!

Created for the front cover of Form magazine.

For fashion brand Hermes.

For Starbucks ad.

The three above are by Yulia Brodskaya, a Russian born illustrator. They are so intricate and beautiful. I love it because it is a bit more unusual and still looks so well finished. I definitely want to create another piece using paper folding, with more of this kind of style, for my project. I have a few more letters free to create designs for.

Below Jeff Nishinaka. Paper sculptor, who has been working with the material for many years. Most of his work he creates is in pristine white.

I don’t usually get it but this I’m totally wishing I did.
I’ve got a new artist for you all today! Ulia Brodskaya is an illustrator, graphic designer and artist who is currently residing in the UK (born in Moscow, Russia). My Google homepage deserves a present for introducing me to her wonderful work. Her sense of color and composition are remarkable. The piece above is not a digital manipulation as one might think. Each element is created by thin strips of paper, adhered to a flat surface. In the world of contemporary art today, it hard to find the level of detail and craftsmanship found in Yulia’s PAPERgraphic pieces. All the lines and details are beautifully constructed, but the cleanliness is remarkable.

Her typographic skills carry between the non-traditional 3D PAPERgraphic pieces and her other 2D typographic pieces. Color, composition and craftsmanship combine to create these eye catching pictures and illustrations. Ulia shows that companies aren’t gravitating towards visuals that are solely digital, especially with her list of clients.

Go to her site, view her work and get inspired!

DISCLAIMER: I found out that the top image of Yulia’s was pulled from my blog and posted on we♥it with a link to my blog. I want to stress that I did not make this image or have any connection to it except for showcasing her work as inspiration to others. I will be in contact with them to have the image taken down unless posted by Yulia herself.

I have known about Yulia Brodskaya approximately since a year and like the way she makes her illustrations. It is important to have different methods of forming your design and as a result making an illusration and artwork. The difference makes you be recognized by others. I think her style is really different and remarkably prominent to be recognized. Here you are some of her works.

About

Yulia Brodskaya was born in Russia (Moscow); prior to moving to the UK in 2004 she was interested in diverse creative practices ranging from Textile Painting, Origami and Collage to more traditional Fine Art practices. Following an MA in Graphic Communication (2006, University of Hertfordshire) she has continued to experiment and explore ways of bringing together all the things she likes most: typography, paper, and highly detailed hand-made craft objects.

For something a bit more tangible than those fancy computer graphics, take a look at this. Yulia Brodskaya, Russian born artist as worked as a designer in london since moving there in 2004. Her unique design style caught my attention because they are so well constructed. Some pieces made entirely out of paper transform into something far greater then an ordinary piece of paper. Visit her site and enjoy these hand crafted one of a kinds.

Her work is so beautifully crafted. I can only imagine how long it takes her to make a piece like the above. Every leaf/petal needs to be curled or scored just the right amount so that all pieces fit together as one whole. I wonder if she gets papercuts often? Haha

… and even in greyscale, well white with shadow created, the effect is amazing!

Bit of a christmas theme here for a feature in g2, the alternative magazine of the Guardian Newspaper. I love how the words are the negative space now unlike the rest of her work in which the words are made FROM the paper.

A few days ago (courtesy of Simon) I discovered the amazing world of Illustrator / designer Yulia Brodskaya. Through her work she explore ways of bringing together all the things she likes most: typography, paper, and highly detailed hand-made craft objects which are all the things I like most too (give or take a few buttons!) I’m loving these amazing paper designs. When I was younger I was given a Quilling Set, fabulous strips of brightly coloured papers, I’d spend hours curling the strips of paper but they never looked this good!

We’re particular fans of how it manifests calligraphically and typographically. Here’s some of the finest, and six words about each:

Ray Fenwick
