How We Managed To Lose Games We Should’ve Won.

The most frustrating thing in sports is watching your team lose when you know it is more than capable of winning. Surely all fans feel or think or say that as they seek answers to why their team failed to have a winning season and reach the playoffs. For some, like the Pirates and the Nationals, the answer is simple. For teams like the Braves, the answers are more complex. The Braves have an average payroll, above average rotation and that’ll get you to the post season. Get players that’ll get you some runs and you’re there in October.

The Braves are not going anywhere but home when this season ends. Why did that happen? Is it just “the way the ball bounces”? Is it just “that’s baseball”, or is there something or someone that we can point to and confidently and reasonably say, “that was the one undeniable cause of our losing season”. In sports, that is almost impossible to prove and there are as many opinions as there are fans.

Seeking blame is not a helpful exercise nor is it a fruitful cause, but seeking answers to questions and solutions for problems is worthwhile and helpful, even if the exercise is to satisfy our own curiosity and sense of logic, reason, cause and effect. A few excerpts inspired me from a Mark Bowman, MLB article last night:

Jair Jurrjens

“I don’t even know what to say anymore,” said Jurrjens, who has seen the Braves score two runs or fewer in 14 of his 29 starts. “It’s getting frustrating for us now, especially because of how big these games are for us right now.” -

I’m afraid this may be closer to what he wanted to say: I do know what to say after playing with this club… that it’s been frustrating from day one in Atlanta. First chance, I’m out’a here.

“Wells was hard to hit at,” manager Bobby Cox said. “He was wild enough to be effective. He would make some real bad pitches and then make the most Greg Maddux-[like] pitches you could ever imagine.”

Another perspective: Hate to mince words but must differ with the skipper… Wells was actually easy to “hit at”. We hit “at” him all night, trying to impatiently force the situation and pull the ball and wound up swinging at pitches way up and way out of the zone. Wells was “effectively wild” (stunk) but occasionally got one over. We helped him out a great deal by swinging at everything except, uh, the ones across the plate.

This season is a nightmare for the Braves rotation, where one run might lose a game and three runs pretty much assures you of hanging one in the loss column.

I’m not tracking, but it seems like we were on a pretty good roll until Chipper put himself back in. His pinch three run double made him forget all about the slumpfest he’s been in, figured he was invincible, happy days were here again and determined he’d play every game after that. That hasn’t worked out very well for Chipper or the team.

But that’s just one player and I don’t hang this or any season on just one player. Was it untimely injuries to McLouth, Infante, Prado, Church, just as they were playing so well? Was it sticking with French and Kelly so, so incredibly long? Did we overlook Diaz too long? Was it the unwillingness or stubbornness to keep Chipper in, or allow him to camp in the 3 spot so long? Is it having Mac bat cleanup when Rochey would be a better fit? Were we one big bat shy of having a winning team?

Should we have kept Conrad in Atlanta to play second, moving Prado to third to let Chipper have some real time off? Should we be resting Mac more and let Ross contribute?

Was it a bad idea to pitch Gonzo and Soriano with big leads too many times or put them in to pitch too often on consecutive nights when most managers would’ve used others in the pen?

Medlen

Did we pitch Moylan way too much, especially with him coming off surgery? Is Lowe done as a starter? Have we mismanaged Medlen enough yet, jerking him around to the point of throwing him out of synch and robbing him of confidence? Has “loyalty” or “patience” with a struggling Norton hurt the team? Is Garret done as a position player?

As always, there is not one single reason a team loses and not one single player that causes a team to lose the season. “All of the above” (and more) would be the only viable and fair answer to so many questions about this 2009 season.

Yet, even with all of the injuries (which all teams have) and slumps (which all teams have), our starting pitching has been excellent. With the exception of Lowe, our rotation is at least as good as any in the game. Cy Young could not have won more games than Jair this year with such pitiful run support.

This season, even with less than stellar offense, with just a little less loyalty and patience and that stubborn old playbook, the Braves could be ahead of the Phillies today. We had a good enough team this year but in my humble opinion they were mismanaged all the way. Bobby didn’t manage bad enough to be tossed out in mid season as some owners do, particularly because of the laurels he rests on, and he didn’t manage so blatantly bad that he lost all benefit of doubt about his current capability.

The Braves were managed just well enough to almost win. Luck had nothing to do with this season like it did last year. Our injuries could have been played through. Rally-killing, automatic-out players that were mired in months long, excruciating slumps could have been lifted. Luck played no role in the 2009 season, unless you consider having a great manager that is (still) on top of his game good luck. A few less injuries to key players would have helped as would the good fortune of landing a big bat, but our bad luck in 2009 was bad managing.

Maybe we’ll manage to get’em next year.

In case you haven’t noticed, Adam LaRoche is really, really hot. He’s posted a 1.276 OPS in his games with the Braves this year.

Tommy Hanson has been great in his first MLB stint, and his peripherals are starting to come around, too(23/3 K/BB ratio in his last three starts).

Yunel Escobar is continuing his semi-breakout season, with a .826 OPS from an offensively weak position.

Derek Lowe is really getting worrisome. He’s walking more batters than he has since 2004, his K rate is close to non-existent, and his GB%(56.3), while still good, is well below his standerd. Sinker-ballers tend to age well, but you have to wonder if Derek Lowe is going to end up being a four starter a lot sooner than the Braves hoped.

This shouldn’t come as any news flash, but the Braves really need to get healthy for any stretch run they might make. Nate McLouth, Martin Prado, Garret Anderson, and Ryan Church have all missed time recently, though McLouth is the only one that has gone to the DL(so far).

After the trades, there were a few other things going on in baseball this weekend… Here goes my list:

Brandon Webb’s shoulder isn’t healling and now he’s heading to surgery on Monday. Not only is this year done, but there is no telling if he’ll be ready for next year – and Arizona can opt out of 2010 for just $2 million. [MLB]

Boston’s J.D. Drew is day to day with a groin injury. Drew tried to play today, smashed a double, reinjured himself running the bases, and left after the one at bat. [MLB]

New Red Scott Rolen was hit in the head by a Jason Marquis pitch and had to leave the game. He’s day to day.

Toronto closer Scott Downs heads to the DL with a foot injury – possibly reinjuring the same foot that cost him a DL stint in June. Jason Frasor will get save opportunities for the short term, and Jeremy Accardo returns from AAA to help out. [MLB]

Texas loses Ian Kinsler (Hamstring) and Jason Grilli (not listed) to the DL, and will be calling up two prospects to the roster. Doug Mathis is a pretty good pitcher, but really no more than a fourth or fifth starter at best. The real gem is reliever Neftali Feliz, who has fanned 325 batters in 276 innings and even in the PCL has only allowed two homers in 77 innings. It was only a matter of time before the top ranked prospect (according to Baseball America, that’s who) got his shot – and he’s ready. Next year, we’ll be angling to add him to our fantasy rosters somehow. [MLB]

Casey Blake and Yunel Escobar are dealing with wrist injuries. Blake injured his in the weight room, while Escobar is working on getting his swing back in the cages.

Milwaukee signed outfielder Corey Patterson to a minor league deal. He can play as a fourth or fifth outfielder.

Jeff Bennett, the guy who broke his hand punching a door and was released by Atlanta, was signed to a minor league deal by Tampa.

Hurry Back! Oriole starter Brad Bergesen heads to DL with a leg contusion. Giants LF Andres Torres strained a hammy and will be out 15 days. Florida’s Burke Badenhop heads to the DL with a strained right trapezius. Red Sox catcher George Kottaras heads to the DL, but the injury wasn’t listed. Rockies pitcher Juan Rincon heads to the DL with elbow stiffness.

Welcome Back!

The Mets activated Gary Sheffield from the DL. Chris Ray comes off the DL for Baltimore and gets back his closer role with the departure of George Sherrill. Marlins closer (?) Matt Lindstrom came off the DL. I wonder how that will work out… Brett Lillibridge returns to the White Sox – a burner but not a prospect. He’s infield insurance. The Yankees recalled bopper Shelly Duncan, and when Jerry Hairston arrived, he was sent back down. Cincinnnati is giving Kip Wells a chance to pitch – they must be desperate. Washington recalled Elijah Dukes from Syracuse. Adam Dunn is a first baseman for the rest of the season now that Nick Johnson is gone and Dukes gets one more shot.

Welcome to the Bigs! Barbaro Canizares – a Cuban first baseman who hits like Mark Grace with fewer walks. Andy LaRoche’s job is not safe – this guy can hit. The Giants recalled reliever Waldis Joaquin – he’s a raw relief talent who needs to work on his command, but he’s just an insurance policy for San Francisco.

Is it Over? Brandon Wood was dispatched back to the minors by the Angels. For him to return to prospect status, he has to stick somewhere. Sidney Ponson was designated for assignment by the Royals. It might be the last call…

Yunel Escobar will be great. He will hit at least 20 homers and get 90 RBIsa year. His weakest stats are his K-BB ratio and SB-CS ratio but they should get even better. He will have great stats. He will be better than Jimmy Rollins and should have more power and hit production than Hanley Ramirez. His fantasy value should skyrocket through the next couple of years. His career line should be 310/395/475. Escobar’s defense is bad right now but it should get better. He’s streaky right now b.ut he should become more consistent. Escobar still has potential and should fulfil it all. Escobar does great when the Braves win and he should do good and help a lot in wins. Escobar isn’t goinng to be a hall of famer but he will always be a great player.

¿Cómo cambiaron a Tom Seaver? No entiendo.

Last month, I wrote about Bobby Cox’ removal of Yunel Escobar from a game after a series of frustrating mental errors. I hoped that Cox’ move would re-focus the shortstop and we’d see an improvement in his defense and baserunning. For the latter, it hasn’t helped much. Escobar has since been caught twice in non-force plays on the basepaths. His aggressiveness, however, often pays off, as he takes extra bases 50% of the time, a healthy advantage over the ML average of 38%. Then there was the missed sign that has been discussed in full detail. Defensively, however, there haven’t been any lapses, at least to my recollection.

However, the move seems to have lit a spark with Yunel’s offense, though there was hardly any problem there to begin with. Since the benching, Yunel has hit .344/.406/.583 with 6 2B, 5 HR, just 11 K’s, and 10 BB’s. As a frame of reference, projected to a full season, he’d have 35 doubles and 29 homers with those rates.

Perhaps Yunel is just getting hot as many hitters often do during the summer, that it’s just a coincidence with the benching. But perhaps it’s something more. Perhaps Yunel Escobar got Bobby Cox’ message. It’s happened before, after all.

The game was entertaining (braves won 4-2 with a sweet homerun by Yunel Escobar and a solid pitching performance by Jair Jurrjens, and even though he struggled & lost we still got to see All-Star pitcher Tim Lincecum)

But what was more entertaining was what started taking place about the 7th inning. Some guy (about college age or just out of college) who was TOTALLY SMASHED (worse than the ball Yunel hit in the 3rd inning - “3 sheets to the wind” as my aunt put it) came down to the railing at the wall about 15 feet from us to begin taunting the Giants’ leftfielder John Bowker – this is where hilarity ensued. (This may be one of those – you had to be there moments – but I still think you will find it funny – also sorry that I didn’t get a pic of this “heckler” to post – you just kind of had to see him)

So this guy – we don’t know his name, but we DO KNOW he had an OLD-SCHOOL t-shirt/fake jersey of Greg Maddux when he was with the Braves – so we just referred to him as “Greg” or “Maddux”. By the way this t-shirt/jersey was probably made to fit a middle-school girl, and this guy was not a middle-school girl size (not that he was fat – let’s call him average size guy). Anyway “GREG” or “SUPERFAN” or “WORST HECKLER EVER GUY” came down to share his displeasure with the Giants and their poor leftfielder John Bowker.

This guy began SCREAMING – not yelling, not calling, not bellowing – but SCREAMING – over & over & over & over “BOWKER” ”BOWKER” “BOWKER” that’s all he would say. Well he was too drunk to realize the music was playing and the crowd was cheering – we couldn’t hear him from 15 feet away much less this guy on the field. That didn’t phase him – SERIOUSLY for like a solid minute (and we know how long that can seem – see earlier post about that) all this dude did was scream this guy’s name. Occasionally looking around to get affirmation from the rest of the fans. Which OF COURSE we gave him – we clapped & cheered for him to continue – I even yelled for him to “get him – don’t let him ignore you”.

Eventually a friend of his came to retrieve him and then a couple of times an usher would come down and ask him to head back to his seat. This guy was DIE-HARD for each new half inning that “BOWKER!” would come out to the field our little friend would return. By this time the fans were finding it hilarious and were beginning to throw things at him and just have a LOT OF FUN @ HIS EXPENSE. Some of the people closer to him said that he was just yelling the guy’s name and then saying things like “ya’ll are losing” (oooooo really nailed him) and other such weak abuse.

Finally I had about all I could take of his pitiful attempts – so sometime in the 8th inning I waited for the PRIME OPTIMUM MOMENT when there was a hush over the crowd. Stood up and with all that I had, BELLOWED, “HEY BOWKER – WOULD YOU TURN AROUND AND ACKNOWLEDGE THIS GUY – HE HAS BEEN YELLING AT YOU THE ENTIRE INNING!!!” – and sure enough Bowker turned around and looked up into the stands – where our friend “Greg” then started back up with his pointing and sad taunting. At one point “SUPERFAN” looked over and acknowledged my effort to help him like a struggling swimmer going under for the 3rd & final time.

Everyone around us was dying laughing and cheering and getting the guy wound up again. What made it funnier was that in the 9th inning the Giants took “BOWKER” out of the game and moved Randy Winn over to play in Leftfield – so we tried to encourage our buddy that – HE MADE IT HAPPEN. Then we also decided to convince him that it was still “BOWKER” out there and that he had just switched jerseys with someone to throw our PERSEVERANT ABUSER off his game. We told him to keep it up and keep yelling @ Bowker that the little jersey trick wouldn’t confuse our man “GREG”.

We also threw a few taunts of “Hey Greg you better go warm up in the bullpen – the Braves might use you to close this one out” but only for our own humor cause this guy was too wasted to first even hear us or to second even comprehend our joke.

What a beautiful evening it was for a baseball game – for not only was it entertaining but it was filled with all sorts of fun from the Braves, Beer, & “BOWKER!”

Thanks to the official end of the first half of the 2009 baseball season, it was a short week last week. Some teams only played three games (I think the Detroit Tigers want a do over), while others played four.

Just because it was a short week, it doesn’t mean that there wasn’t some solid fantasy performances. That being said – here at the fantasy studs, players who might be of concern, and the potential pickups for the week of July 13 – 20.

Fantasy Studs

Yunel Escobar – .500/2/8 with three doubles. This kid has so much talent it’s ridiculous. Hopefully he will now put it together at the major league level.

Jim Thome- .500/2/7/.615. Five years after he retires, Thome will be the most interesting Hall of Fame debate in quite some time.

Edwin Encarnacion- .583/2/6/.688. After missing most of the first half with an injury, Encarnacion is looking to have a big second half.

Raul Ibanez- .500/2/5. Ibanez picks up right where he left off in the first half.

Lackey pitched like an ace on Sunday

Alfonso Soriano – .400/2/5. The Chicago Cubs really need this guy to wake up in the second half. So far he is off to a good start.

John Lackey- 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and six K’s in nine IP. Lackey was outstanding yesterday vs. the Oakland A’s. I have Lackey on my fantasy team and this was a great sign for myself and other Lackey owners in the world of fantasy baseball.

Roy Oswalt- 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA and five K’s in nine IP. Oswalt walked into Dodger Stadium and tossed the very rare complete game. Oswalt is a notorious second half pitcher (68-20, 2.86 ERA for his career), so fantasy owners should expect more of the same from Oswalt in the next couple of months.

JP Howell - Three saves, zero hits, zero walks, and four K’s in three IP. Howell has really stabilized the Tampa Bay Rays pen. He has nine saves and a 1.97 ERA on the season.

A quick note about Howell. Howell was drafted in the first round (31st overall) by the Kansas City Royals. The Royals traded him just two years later for Joey Gathright.

Just one of the many reasons why the Royals have had one winning season since 1994.

Reasons for Concern

Orlando Hudson – Hudson left Sunday’s game with soreness in his left wrist. It’s something that is not believed to be serious, but it is worth noting that this is the same wrist that Hudson had surgery on last year.

Keep an eye on this situation going forward.

Nelson Cruz - Cruz fractured his right ring finger when he was diving back to first base in Saturday’s game against the Minnesota Twins.

Like Hudson’s injury, Cruz’s injury doesn’t appear to be serious.

Cruz was scratched from the lineup on Sunday and is considered day-to-day.

Mark DeRosa - Things have gone as badly as humanly possible for DeRosa since the St. Louis Cardinals acquired Mr. Versatility from the Cleveland Indians in June.

DeRosa started 0-9, then went on the 15-day DL with a wrist injury, and is now 0-6 since returning from the DL. That is 0-15 for those of you scoring at home.

Potential Pickups

Garrett Jones - I wrote about Jones on Sunday. Jones is hitting .286 with seven HR’s in just 14 games. As long as he keeps hitting, he should get plenty of AB’s in Pittsburgh.

Jason Schmidt – Yes, Jason Schmidt is still alive. Do you want to throw up? Jason Schmidt made six starts in 2007, zero starts in 2008, and will make his 2009 debut tonight against the Cincinnati Reds and has made $46 million in that span.

I am not expecting much out of Schmidt these days. He is probably a four or five inning pitcher at this point in his career. He might get a cheap win over the Padres or the Nationals here and there, so he might be worth a pickup if you have a spot open on your roster.

It wasn’t so much that the Mets lost as much as it was the way in which they lost. It was the

It wasn’t so much that the Mets lost as much as it was the way in which they lost. It was the score more than the winner that left so many Mets fans with a bad taste in their mouth. Atlanta 11. New York 0.

It was a tough match-up for the Mets. The Mets were up against Braves ace Jair Jurrjens, who has a sub-3 ERA on the season and pitched beautifully his last time out versus the Mets. Meanwhile, the Mets sent out Mike Pelfrey, who’s always had a rough time versus the Braves. So, to some extent, the cards were stacked against the Mets before the game even began.

But still, this was unacceptable.

The Mets offense was once again invisible. Only 5 Mets reached base Friday night on just 2 hits and 3 walks.

They were absolutely shut down by Jurrjens, who needed just 85 pitches to make it through six innings, giving up just two hits and two walks in the process. And then, for the second night in a row, they were shut down by the Braves bullpen. In three innings versus the Braves bullpen, they could only get one man on base.

Meanwhile, the Braves had no problem getting the bats going against Pelfrey. They started out early with three in the first, sparked by a Brian McCann 2-RBI double and a Yunel Escobar RBI-single. They then put up another three-spot in the third, led by home runs from Martin Prado and McCann. And then, they outdid themselves in the fifth, putting up four more runs and chasing Pelfrey out of the game.

NOTE: Another nice game from Escobar, who has become a bit of a Met-killer. He is now batting .326 in 86 career at-bats versus the Mets. Two home runs in two games thus far this series. Watch out for this guy.

Pelfrey’s final line would be nine runs on nine hits in four-plus innings of work. Terrible start. Absolute battering.

Then, Tim Redding comes in and gives up three consecutive hits, including one to Ryan Church. By the time the inning mercifully ends, the Braves have a 10 – 0 lead. From there on out, things were OK. Elmer Dessens gave up a run in two innings of work and Sean Green pitched a scoreless ninth. But the damage had been done. An absolutely crushing 11 – 0 defeat.

Worse yet, the Philadelphia Phillies won Friday, so the Mets are now EIGHT AND A HALF GAMES BACK in the NL East.

The best news of the day came when Pittsburgh defeat San Francisco in 14 innings meaning the Mets will remain just seven games back of the Ssn Francisco Giants in the Wild Card hunt.

But still, in both chases, they are digging themselves a very deep hole. There are 8 teams ahead of them in the Wild Card standings. 3 teams ahead of them in the division. It’s hard to be a Mets fan right now.

One almost has to begin wondering when the Mets will begin looking towards the future and become sellers on the trade market. Carlos Beltran? Any takers?

It looked tough from the outset for the Mets. They were starting Oliver Perez, who has been simply awful all season long. Perez came into the game with an ERA over 8. Even in his last start, when he gave up just two runs, he walked seven hitters, giving the Mets plenty of cause for concern. Meanwhile, the Braves starter was Derek Lowe, a man the Mets had struggled against earlier this season.

And sure enough things started badly, when the Braves took a 2 – 0 lead in the second after solo homeruns by Yunel Escobar and Garrett Anderson.

Yet, the Mets clawed their way back in the top of the fourth. The inning started with three consecutive singles by Luis Castillo, David Wright, and Gary Sheffield, the last one knocking in a run. Then, Jeff Francoeur grounded out, scoring another run, and Daniel Murphy doubled in a third run, giving the Mets a 3 – 2 lead.

Perez gave a run back in the fourth. But after six innings, with both starters out, the Mets had to feel pretty good, having survived a Perez start, to be knotted 3 – 3 with the Braves.

That’s when the combination of Pedro Feliciano and Bobby Parnell gave the game away. Feliciano walked the leadoff hitter in the bottom seventh, but got the next hitter to fly out. Then, Jerry brought Parnell in. Parnell proceeded to give up two straight singles, the second giving the Braves a 4 – 3. Feliciano would be charged the run, but most of the blame has to fall on Parnell. Yes, Feliciano walked a guy, but it was Parnell who let him come all the way around to score. Parnell would give up another run in the bottom of the eighth and there was your final score. 5 – 3 Atlanta.

While you could blame this one on the bullpen, the offense deserves just as much blame. They scored 3 runs Thursday night on just 6 hits. That’s right: just 6 hits, 5 off Lowe and just one in three innings versus the Braves bullpen.

Tough way for the Mets to start out the second half. They lose a game on the Braves. The Phillies won too, so the Mets are now SEVEN AND A HALF games out of first. They remain seven games back in the Wild Card.

Thankfully, the Mets have Johan starting tonight, so hopefully that can win it, and then keep on winning. We deseperately need to get on a winning streak. Let’s start tonight.

Word out of the Toronto Blue Jays front office is that they will be entertaining trade offers for former Cy Young winner Roy Halladay. Halladay has been terrific this year, and will be competing for the Cy Young trophy yet again this year. I don’t need to really go over his numbers, if you don’t know that this guy is one of the best pitchers in baseball, well… How the hell did you stumble across this blog?

Anyhow, I have already fielded texts from Braves fans tonight inquiring or speculating about the Braves’ chances of making a move for him.

Let me put it this way… N-O

Halladay is a terrific pitcher, yes. But is he a player the Braves need at this juncture? Absolutely not. And while the Braves have pieces they could give up to get Halladay (such as a package including Yunel Escobar, Freeman/Heyward, and/or one of our starting pitchers), it just really doesn’t make sense for the Braves.

For one, the Braves rotation is stocked right now and is performing as well as any of us could have expected, with the exception of Derek Lowe’s struggles over the last month and a half. Not to mention, Tim Hudson will be coming back from his elbow surgery earlier than expected later this month. While we can’t be sure how well Hudson will be able to perform, the worst case scenario is that we are “stuck” with our current rotation, which has been a top 5 group in all of baseball.

Would Halladay make the rotation better? Yes, but marginally. However, if the Braves were to hypothetically put together a similar package of players for an impact power bat, the benefits of such trade would be far greater. That said, there is no way in hell I want to touch any of our top prospects, but if we can get an impact power bat like I mentioned for the right price, I would likely be a proponent of such a trade.
