Ripp and Redd: Hustlers and Players

When it’s too early for the club to come alive, or perhaps too late and the crowd begins to wane, what would be any DJ’s ace in the hole, his one trusted trick up his sleeve? How to turn the evening tide from the worse to the electric, stimulating, intensifying pleasure all have been waiting for with baited breath the entire evening? In two names and one act, blood brothers from the Panhandle State, Ripp and Redd. Hailing from the greater Jacksonville, Florida area, this duo alone can generate the jumping sounds of bass, the enamoring melodies, and the adept delivery of lyrics unparalleled known to mankind. Who knows, perhaps even the extra-terrestrial are somehow tuned in to become part of the pair known as  the life of the party.

Ripp and Redd came from modest up bringings, but it wasn’t their lot in life to be held down by anyone or anything. No, talent on their level simply could not be suppressed by man or circumstance. With a small loan to the local music shop, Ripp purchased his first keyboard, laid down some notes, and history was made. Within a matter of one year the duo had already taken an astronomical leap in the market under the moniker, 4 Deep. At some point, the unity of the act began to meander and the two brothers alone remained.

Scouted by Joe Stern-McGovern and Terje Himberg-Larsen of DJ White Shadow fame, the duo were swept to the west coast’s San Diego in a quest to create their first official album. Due to circumstances beyond control, all was put on hold for a year as various matters were straightened. Meanwhile, Ripp and Redd continued to forge their own destiny, never failing and never quitting at what they knew was their life calling. In the interim, Ripp and Redd put out no fewer than 4 outstanding singles which rocked the region from east to west, and north to south.

You Cannot Stop the Unstoppable

By the close of 2009, Universal Soldier Records, a division of Universal Artists, International, had undergone a change in their methodology through the assistance of the likes of the late, great Casey Rankin of Japan’s legendary Pure-Records, as well as fielding suggestions and tutelage from Sony Records and Warner Bros. insiders who had the skill and maturity to assist the struggling independent label.

With the reconstruction of Universal Soldier Records came the active partipation of Universal Artists, International. With the restructuring came the first great, official step for Ripp and Redd as the pair joined Birmingham, Alabama’s renowned, Black Flock Gang, also known widely as BFG, on their first compilation album, Radio. Featured fourth on the roster of hits, Ripp and Redd cut loose with their full momentum in the raucous single, Get 2 da Money. Even prior to the release of the album which would come to be known as  Radio, word from insiders at EMI, Virgin, and Interscope assured us the album being an assured success, in part due to the continued and strenuous efforts of Ripp and Redd.

A force such as Ripp and Redd isn’t likely to play second fiddle to any act, although their bond with the Black Flock Gang will certainly be a strong one. Audiences can look for the future release of Ripp and Redd’s own debut yet to be named sometime early next year. Rumor has it the album will most likely be distributed by a major within the US, or some powerhouse from abroad. Nevertheless, one thing is certain, whoever backs the duo is one lucky entity, as these two cannot and will not accept anything less than full-fledged success on a level yet unimagined.

Okay so that one was number 11, good just not good enough for the top ten. Anyway with the decade coming to a close I decided I’d do some top ten lists for the various things in life that I enjoy. Music videos, movies, snowboard parts etc. Starting things of with rap videos makes sense because lets face it they are fun to watch and remind us that things weren’t always looking so bleak. Where’re about to start a new decade here and hopefully we can look forward to things getting better for all of us. The criteria for choosing the videos was simple. Classic song that makes you nod your head whenever heard, solid video production and of course girls, girls, girls. They were chosen in no particular order  and are “recession proof”. Gorilla Zoe, or Alonzo Mathis, is a member of Boyz N Da Hood.  His solo debut was in 2007 with Welcome to the Zoo.  He replaced Young Jeezy as a member of Boyz N Da Hood and saw success with his first single,  Hood Figga.  His influence for his music is his life.  He has worked with artists such as Yung Joc and Rick Ross.

R&B Sensation Myko teamed up with DJ Infamous for Pardon the Interruption.  The mixtape features Rick Ross, Yung Joc, Sean Paul and Drake accompanied by Myko’s flawless vocals.  Download here and let us know what you think.

Yung Joc’s wish has finally come true, he is no longer signed to Block Ent./Bad Boy South. During the summer, Joc expressed his interest in leaving the label. In order to be released, Joc released a free album to the public. Given the history of Sean “Diddy” Combs as an executive, it was highly unlikely that Yung Joc would get off of Bad Boy.

However, the Atlanta rapper got lucky. Combs, always being one step ahead of himself, he signed a new distribution deal with Interscope Records. In the deal, the current roster of Bad Boy Records will stay under Atlantic Records, but all new signees will be under Interscope Records. When current Bad Boy artists go to re-sign with the label, they will move from Atlantic to Interscope.

He has not come out to say this, but Diddy is ready to end the deal with Atlantic Records as soon as possible. Yung Joc has been the biggest star on Bad Boy for some time, but he is a part of the Atlantic deal. While it may hurt to simply release him, it makes sense so that Diddy can go ahead and end the deal with Atlantic Records.

Due to his eagerness to move on with his label, Sean Combs granted Yung Joc his release from Block Entertainment, Bad Boy South, and Bad Boy Records.

Yung Joc has made it clear that he wants to leave Bad Boy Records. Diddy has built a reputation of treating his artists any type of way that he wants to. The bottom line is, if an artist wants to leave Bad Boy, but Diddy wants them to stay, they are staying. Yung Joc is simply the latest Bad Boy star that wants off of Bad Boy.

There is one major difference between Yung Joc’s attempt to leave Bad Boy and attempts from other artists to leave Bad Boy. That is the fact that Diddy is trying to get out of a bad label deal, himself. Over the years, it has become clear that Diddy and Lyor Cohen are not the best of friends. Despite that, Cohen is the boss of Atlantic Records, the label that distributes Bad Boy.

Aside from that, Atlantic Records owns a 50% stake in Bad Boy Records, so essentially, Lyor Cohen owns a 50% stake of Diddy’s label. Last month, Diddy worked out a deal with Atlantic Records for him to purchase the Bad Boy name back. He took the name and signed a distribution deal with Interscope Records.

All new artists signed to Bad Boy Records will be on Bad Boy/Interscope as opposed to Bad Boy/Atlantic. The deal with Atlantic Records is not over, though. Any artists that are signed to Bad Boy through Atlantic will remain on Atlantic. However, if any of these artists are dropped or they end up leaving the label, the deal becomes smaller and smaller until it is completely dissolved.

Diddy is working hard to get acts signed to his Bad Boy label, but he says that he has not forgotten about his Atlantic Records acts. As big of a star as Yung Joc has been for Bad Boy, he is signed to Atlantic Records. Diddy hates getting rid of star rappers, such as Joc, but he has been unhappy with this Bad Boy/Atlantic deal for some time. Getting rid of Joc is one less artist signed to Atlantic Records for him.

Since this is a unique case and Diddy is ready to move on, will he release Yung Joc from his contract at Bad Boy Records?

Is it me or does Nitti Beats (producer for Yung Joc’s It’s going down) and Eric Sermon of (EPMD & Def Squad/Def Jam) look just alike?
