Why do fans want to know everything about their favorite celebrity? Celebrities are famous for a re

Why do fans want to know everything about their favorite celebrity? Celebrities are famous for a reason — be it talent, physical appearance, intelligence, or otherwise. To the loyal fan, this reason makes their idol’s personal life worthy to be studied.

Meeting a celebrity is not as difficult as it seems. Twitter gives real-time information down to the half-second. Just the other day, I searched for former Rage Against the Machine frontman, Zack de la Rocha on Twitter and someone tweets where Zack was at that very moment. On a blog site, a comment reads “By the way if you do want to meet him, he lives in Eagle Rock and frequents a local eatery also in Eagle Rock called The Coffee Table on Colorado Boulevard.” The internet only adds fuel to the stalker’s obsession.

I was 17 when I first saw Rage Against the Machine performing live on TV. Instantaneously, I was enamored with Rage frontman, Zack de la Rocha. The combination of Zack’s powerful stage presence, passionate lyrical vitriol, and physical appearance was what attracted me most. At the time, it was an innocent, teenage girl crush that led me to buy their CD. Soon after, I became a Christian and to me that meant I should stop listening to anything with foul language. Around this time, Rage disassembled which really didn’t matter to me since I stopped listening to their music anyway.

A month ago, I came across one of their live video performances on the tube and my interest was rekindled. Only this time, it was unlike my innocent, teenage girl crush years ago. With so much of Zack’s personal life posted all over the internet and twitter (a stalkers real-time tool), it was not hard to “get to know” him. Don’t get me wrong. I have no desire to date, have sex with, or marry Zack. Just to meet him and talk. Actually, I am more interested in his spiritual life and sharing my faith with him. From what I’ve read, he does not claim to be Christian or any other religion. Judging by his lyrics and his own experience with religion, it seems that Zack has had a negative perspective on Christianity.

Deep down, I know these thoughts are fanatical and “stalkerish.” Then again, part of me says “Well, if I ever were to meet Zack, that’s the first thing I’d want to do: show him a different perspective of Christianity.” I’ve shared my faith with everyone I love and care about and Zack would be no exception. In a way, I do care about him because he’s made such an impact on my life with his music and political beliefs.

So, why am I writing this? To confess that I may have a problem. OK, I have a BIG problem. I’m obsessed with this desire to befriend Zack. Whether or not my intentions are good or bad, a celebrity obsession is as unhealthy as any other commonly known addiction. Just the amount of time alone I think about this goal is unhealthy. This time could be spent improving my life and dealing with the reasons I am obsessed in the first place. Depression, being one of these reasons, or as I like to think of it: when a person has an extremely distorted and negative perspective on their own life. In regards to my career, I’m not where I want to be and I presume focusing on my “Save Zack” mission has kept me from thinking about how unhappy I am.

I must clarify that I would NEVER go to Eagle Rock to meet Zack. The thoughts come to my mind though… often. Just like a person who has OCD is obsessed with washing their hands.

With any addiction, the first step is admitting you have a problem. I’ve done that, now what?

“ America touts itself as the land of the free, but the number one freedom that you and I have is the freedom to enter into a subservient role in the workplace. Once you exercise this freedom you’ve lost all control over what you do, what is produced, and how it is produced. And in the end, the product doesn’t belong to you. The only way you can avoid bosses and jobs is if you don’t care about making a living. Which leads to the second freedom: the freedom to starve. ” — Tom Morello, Guitar World.

,,When you live in a capitalistic society, the currency of the dissemination of information goes through capitalistic channels. Would Noam Chomsky object to his works being sold at Barnes & Noble? No, because that’s where people buy their books. We’re not interested in preaching to just the converted. It’s great to play abandoned squats run by anarchists, but it’s also great to be able to reach people with a revolutionary message, people from Granada Hills to Stuttgart ” – Zack

Every official that come in
Cripples us leaves us maimed
Silent and tamed
And with our flesh and bones
He builds his homes

Southern fist
Rise through tha jungle mist
Clenched to smash power so cancerous
Black flag and a red star
A rising sun loomin over Los Angeles
Yes for Raza livin in La La
Like Gaza on to tha dawn Intifada
Reach for the lessons tha masked pass on
Seize tha metropolis
Its you its built on

Everything can change on a new years day
Everything can change on a new years day
Everything can change on a new years day
And everything changed on a new years day, come on.

War within a breath
Its land or death

Their existence is a crime
Their seat, their robe, their tie
Their land deeds
Their hired guns
Theyre tha crime

Shots heard underground round the rapture
Worlds eye captured
At last is a Mexican pasture
Tha masked screaming land or deathWithin a breath
A war from the depth of time
Shot four puppet governors in a line
Shook all tha world bankers
Who think they can rhyme
Shot the landlords who knew it was mine
Yes its a war from the depth of time

And everything can change on new years day
And everything can change on new years day
Everything can change on a new years day
And everything can changes on new years day

Every now and then, a song comes along that is visceral in its call to arms. The Sex Pistols are rightly famous for their Anarchy In The UK and God Save The Queen tracks. At the time these were seen by many commentators as signifying the incipient demise of western civilisation. The anger and fear that these songs and the allied if slightly disunited punk movement caused was demonstrated in 1977 by the MP Marcus Lipton writing in the Daily Mirror that:

“If Pop music is going to be used to destroy our established institutions, then it ought to be destroyed first”

A call to arms or a plea to abandon the apathy of the automaton are not much good if they are not heard by the target audience. The nineties had its fair share of rebels and insurrectionists but if truth be told, most never made it out of a cult following. Rage Against The Machine, somewhat surprisingly burst onto the consciousness of the world (with the censored help of MTV) with ‘Killing In The Name’.

Formed in Los Angeles during the early nineties, Rage Against The Machine compromised Tom Morello, Zack De La Rocha, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk. The agenda of the band was always to explore deprivation, racism, and censorship, to promote equality and social justice. Inspired by the likes of The Sex Pistols and The Clash this was to be consummated in a manner that was overtly political and confrontational. They must undoubtedly have been an influence on bands such as At The Drive In (or their descendants Mars Volta) and System Of A Down. The latter band are headed by Serj Tankian who collaborated with Tom Morello to form a non-profit organisation called Axis Of Justice whose aim is to:

“to build a bridge between fans of music around the world and local political organizations to effectively organize around issues of peace, human rights, and economic justice”.

Rage fused Hip-Hop and Rock, but for me it is the guitar work of Tom Morello that really announces itself. The riffs that he uses in this track alone – nevermind the album – certainly cements his place as one of greatest guitarists of the nineties. Still, it would be hard to comment on this band without mentioning the hyperactive poet/rapper/peacenik/jack-in-the-box that is De La Rocha. In his own words:

“…was about completely detaching ourselves from society to see ourselves as…as spirits, and not bowing down to a system that sees you as just another pebble on a beach. I channeled all my anger out through that band.”

This comment was made with regard to an earlier band called Inside Out. However, even a cursory glance through De La Rocha’s back catalogue will reveal that he has very much stuck to that conviction. It is good to see that some people still get angry about injustice. It cheers me to know that there are people like De La Rocha who are simply not content with letting prejudice go unmentioned. It thrills me to see this anger manifest itself in music. Maybe I am speaking too soon, but I doubt that Zack De La Rocha will end up advertising butter or selling car insurance.

The stunning album cover followed in the traditions of earlier rabble rousers like the Dead Kennedy’s. Jello Biafra and company had used imagery to shock and provoke – see for instance the cover to ‘Holiday In Cambodia‘. Likewise Rage Against The Machine had used a picture of Thích Quảng Đức a Buddhist monk who immolated himself by the means of setting himself alight. This was as a protest against the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese administration. Certainly the use of this picture set the stall as to what could be expected inside the album.

I have done my best to remove the self promotion from MTV. Unfortunately too much clipping of the video to remove the advertisement would impact on the song.

Today I’m gonna share a band I figure is gonna be pretty popular pretty soon. Mainly ’cause it has Zack De La Rocha of Rage Against the Machine and former member of The Mars Volta, Jon Theodore. The band is called One Day as a Lion, hailing from Los Angeles, Cali, where all the famous mofos roll. I’m not gonna describe their music too much, if you’re familiar with RAtM then you’ll recognize their style right here, Zack’s yelled rapping is spread throughout the whole album. Also, if you enjoyed RAtM, you’ll probably like these guys’ music.

They only have a 5-track EP out, One Day as a Lion, released in 2008. According to the news, it scored over 17,000 copies sold in the first week. You should listen to the whole thing if you get the chance, but anyway, here’s the third track available for download:

Veja logo aqui abaixo:

“Bring that shit in! uggh! Yeah, the movement’s in motion with mass militant poetry Now check this out…uggh! In the right light, study becomes insight But the system that dissed us Teaches us to read and write So called facts are fraud They want us to allege and pledge And bow down to their god Lost the culture, the culture lost Spun our minds and through time Ignorance has taken over Yo, we gotta take the power back! Bam! here’s the plan Motherfuck uncle sam Step back, I know who I am Raise up your ear, I’ll drop the style and clear It’s the beats and the lyrics they fear The rage is relentless We need a movement with a quickness You are the witness of change And to counteract We gotta take the power back (…)”

Director: Nickolaos Kononelos
Director of Photography: Kevin Joelson

The band is not particularly brand new, but the music video really got my attention. Simple and raw.

“In this era where DJs behave
Be paid to be slaves
We raid airwaves to be sane
And what’s raining from the station
Cash fascination
Like living dead fed agents
Distract us fast
From a disaster’s wrath for sure
Air war was flooded like the 9th ward
On the AM, on the AM
Turn and face them
Hatred and mayhem
Slay them, dangerous
I take razor steps
It’s the swing from the bling
To the bang on the left”

One Day as a Lion is the duo consisting of Zack de la Rocha and Jon Theodore.
They released an self-titled EP last year, the song from the video is the single. Go check it out if you hadn’t heard bout this band till now…it’s different, it’s in your face and has the lyrical content and intensity that Zack delivers in all his projects (being this the best thing I’ve heard from him since RATM).

ONE DAY AS A LION WEBSITE (has all the lyrics, probably handwrited by Zack himself)

I mean, besides this cover I subscribed to Rolling Stone magazine for about four years. I thought it

I mean, besides this cover

I subscribed to Rolling Stone magazine for about four years. I thought it was neat back in the day, being the first magazine that I actually paid to get every month. Now, to paraphrase Zack De La Rocha, there has been a rage building inside of me while reading this magazine of hypocrisy. If this was just another music magazine then it wouldn’t warrant so much of my attention. But this is Rolling Stone. The same Rolling Stone that was home to Hunter S. Thompson and Robert Altman.

I enjoyed Rolling Stone for a couple of years. The first album I ever bought was Ricky Martin’s self-titled album. So I wasn’t always into music, and Rolling Stone worked with that. They gave me all the advertisements and fashion stories that I couldn’t get from my television. Rolling Stone also exposed me to new bands, for which I am eternally grateful. There have been a few, but none more important to me than Kings of Leon (this is circa Aha Shake Heartbreak, before their sound was tainted by legions of screaming British teenagers).

Kings of Leon

Now, I love the Kings of Leon, and in my opinion they are the greatest southern band since Lynyrd Skynyrd. They renewed my faith in modern rock music. So, after Rolling Stone cried tears of joy all over their second album, Aha Shake Heartbreak, and ran a feature about their fashion, I decided to pick it up while it was still soaking wet. Needless to say, it was, and still is a great album. Now, after giving thanks, I have to wonder what the hell is going on in the minds of the people working at that damn magazine. I have pondered this, and the only solution I can come up with is that they don’t read back issues. They just put out the newest issue and erase what they have just written from their memories. Granted, they have many different writers working for them, but I think that a couple of editors wouldn’t hurt, if only for some sort of continuity (not counting their layouts, which, from a graphic design standpoint, have very little variety, but that is a topic for another time).

What am I talking about?

In Rob Sheffield’s review of the Kings of Leon’s 2007 offering, Because of the Times, he can’t help but drool over how great it is. I have no problem with that. I love the album. What I do have a problem with is his quick history of the band. He explains that they came onto the musical scene quickly and “they weren’t any good.” Hmmm… really? I wish somebody could explain to me why Rolling Stone gave their first album, 2003’s Youth and Young Manhood, four stars, the same as Because of the Times. If they weren’t any good then, why does their “best” album get the same rating as their “worst”? Also, a band that tours with Bob Dylan can’t be that bad, right? I mean, the big man himself said that listening to them play “Trani” (from their first album) was the most fun he had had in years.
Just because Rolling Stone hated Led Zeppelin and gave Nirvana’s Nevermind three stars (::cough:: less than Fall Out Boy’s Infinity On High ::cough::), does not mean that they lose all musical credibility. However, when Led Zeppelin are given an album cover as “The Heaviest Band of All Time” and Nevermind is in the top twenty of the “500 Best Albums of All Time“, then there is a problem. I mean, I personally think Nirvana peaked with Bleach, but saying that “Nirvana isn’t onto anything altogether new” would get anybody today at that magazine fired quicker than writing an article supporting Bush the second.

Some cruddy bands from like, forever ago

So, I hereby renounce my subscription to Rolling Stone and am currently without a magazine subscription in my name. That’s right, I am single now, and looking for a spicy new magazine that preferably focuses on music. And please, if you don’t like my opinion, please listen to Glenn Danzig, who has better reasons to hate the magazine. So, I leave you with words of wisdom on Rolling Stone from the Misfits frontman himself.

“It’s just an old hippie magazine who really love putting Beyoncé and Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera on their covers. So why would I care about a magazine like that? It is not a real music mag anyway.”

If you ever read this Rolling Stone…I would still work for you because I could do more damage inside the system.

it is a sunday. my brain feels like a dried up sponge. i hope to make sundays a relaxing day. with poetry and so on and so forth.

we will begin this shindig with one of my own compositions. and follow up with some poetry that has been playing on repeat in my brain for the past few months

the artists below are as follows.
1)mr robbie reaves – riding a bicycle at night.
2)mr zack de la rocha – bulls on parade
3)mr frank o’hara- an excerpt from “Mayakovsky”
4)mr frank o’hara – Song (Is it dirty)
5)mr el-p – league of extraordinary nobodies

the in and out breathy sound
escapes a pair of lips,
riding a bicycle at night.

and there is no light,
except that of the tall lamp posts.

on a bicycle at night the sound is tire and asphalt.
and the breathy sound escaping.
and the syncopation of the tire and the asphalt and the breathy sound escaping.

on a bicycle at night i watch the ground
the tire and the asphalt
and the glimmer of the spokes waltzing
against the empty shimmering road.

and right beneath the light
of the tall lamp posts

i am alone.
with the breathy sound.
and the spokes are dancing.
and the the syncopation of the tire and the asphault and the breathy sound escaping.

riding a bicycle at night and i am cold
my breath is fog.
and i watch my shadow come and go
circling around the spokes
and twisting with the light.

and the syncopation of the tire and the asphault
and a bicycle at night.

——————————–

Bulls on Parade – Zack De la Rocha

The microphone explodes, shattering the molds
Ya either drop tha hits like de la O or get tha &%$# off tha commode
Wit tha sure shot, sure ta make tha bodies drop
Drop an don’t copy yo, don’t call this a co-opt
Terror rains drenchin’, quenchin’ tha thirst of tha power dons
That five sided fist-a-gon
Tha rotten sore on tha face of mother earth gets bigger
Tha triggers cold now empty ya purse

They rally round tha family! With a pocket full of shells

Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes
Not need, just feed the war cannibal animal
I walk tha corner to tha rubble that used to be a library
Linin’ to the mind cemetery now
What we don’t know keeps tha contracts alive an movin’
They don’t gotta burn tha books they just remove ‘em
While arms warehouses fill as quick as tha cells

They Rally round tha family! With a pocket full of shells

Bulls on parade!

——————————–

Frank O’Hara – Mayakovsky (excerpt)

Now I am quietly waiting for

the catastrophe of my personality

to seem beautiful again,

and interesting, and modern.

The country is grey and
brown and white in trees,
snows and skies of laughter
always diminishing, less funny
not just darker, not just grey.

It may be the coldest day of
the year, what does he think of
that? I mean, what do I? And if I do,
perhaps I am myself again.

Frank O’Hara – Song

Is it dirty

does it look dirty

that’s what you think of in the city

does it just seem dirty
that’s what you think of in the city
you don’t refuse to breathe do you

someone comes along with a very bad character
he seems attractive. is he really. yes. very
he’s attractive as his character is bad. is it. yes

that’s what you think of in the city
run your finger along your no-moss mind
that’s not a thought that’s soot

and you take a lot of dirt off someone
is the character less bad. no. it improves constantly
you don’t refuse to breathe do you

——————————–

El P -The league of Extraordinary Nobodies

I just counted in my head how many people in this room
I’m talking to that I would never give the time
Here we are, all being vain and looking at ourselves
in mirrors very closely nodding straight up in a line
All the funny little stories that are told
are being fueled by what amounts to nothing more than minor crime
But I’m a whore and I’m exploring territory where the party and the pussy
both are numbered with a dime

I’ve been thinkin’ that this frozen glow I’ve chosen
is a candidate to lead me to a very sudden end
Another room up in the tombs of lovely substance
where the grave diggers are shoveling that dirt up in her heads
The very fact is that I’m sitting here with zombies talking endlessly
but couldn’t tell you one thing that was said
I get surrounded by the friendliest of strangers
who would sooner kill themselves than give a fuck if I were dead

I just realized the tragedy of this
is that her hand is on my leg and she so clearly wants to fuck
And though I’m wired, and I would certainly oblige
I can’t continue getting high and then confusing it for lust
I’m not an angel, but the baggie we unfolded
and just split to give a lick is dripping out me colored rust
And you seem nice but I still hate you for the moment
’cause I’m too smart to be open, this is artificial trust

I’ve been noticing the fact that nothing glorious can happen anymore
we’ve run the gamut of our filth
But here I am again, pretending spontaneity exists with idiots
all lifted out their little gills
Aren’t you disturbed that everything you did tonight is something else you did already
and its meaning is still nill
And all the people in your presence are just weapons
it’s as simple as the theory that the dying love to kill

Everybody, everybody, everybody, everybody
Everybody here is so alive

Oh, what a night
Oh, what a night
Oh, what a night
You would tell me if I was crazy, right?

I’ve been wondering how arrogant it is for me to keep doing the things
that killed so many that we know
I’ve been noticing how quickly motherfuckers have the answers to existence
just as soon as someone goes
We change the channel for a week or so of cleansing and reflecting on ourselves
but then it’s back to that old show
I hear the cackles of the crowd, they’re laughing at us
and we haven’t even gotten to the part where it’s a joke

——————————–

[RATM's album cover. Vietnamese Monk putting himself on fire to resist repression of Buddhism] AH! R

[RATM's album cover. Vietnamese Monk putting himself on fire to resist repression of Buddhism]

AH! RATM!!! One of my favorite bands!

Along with U2, they are the band that challenged the society most effectively (in my opinion of course)

[Bono, the vocalist from U2. I believe he almost received novel peace prize!]

The guitarist of RATM is infamous Tom Morello. His father was a descendant of the first President of Kenya, and he fought against the government. His mother was a famous (white) woman activist. He grew up in New York Harlem, experienced racism in Chicago for being half black, and attended HARVARD UNIVERSITY and studied politics. To achieve his dream of being greatest activist ever, he read tremendous amount of books about socialism and progressivism. He decided to spread his thoughts by music. During the day he studied, and at night he was jamming the guitar. Instead of just simply playing the guitar, he examined each parts of guitar carefully. As a result, Tom Morello is known as one of the best guitarist in the world, who is capable of producing unique tone and sound that can’t be immitated by anyone(including legendary guitarists like Slash and Van Hallen).

The vocalist(or rapper) of RATM is Zack De Rocha, he experienced extreme racism in America for being Mexican.

His father was an activist, he expressed his political thoughts through painting. As his son, Zack had similar idea, and most importantly, was filled with anger.

When these two key people met, RATM was born, and they crahsed the world. lml

I truly admire them. I really do. I respect their thoughts and ideology. Besides their musical activity, they lead or participated in many protests.

But how much did they change the society so far? Last time I wrote how music can change poeple. But can music change society?

I watched one of the South Park episode criticizing hippie musicians.

They were portrayed as people who played music, thinking that they are changing the world. Actually, they were just getting wasted. They were avoiding the reality, instead of changing them.

RATM is music is surely inspiring. It ignited many people’s heart, encouraged them to fight for what is wrong.

The question is, how many people will actually take action to change society?

In roaring twenties, books like jungle inspired American people and leaders to make changes.

In 21st century, music is not taken seriously as books do, despite of its capability of spreading.

Last time, I said musicians have power to change the world. That was a theoretical statement. In this post, I would like the question the validity of my own statement.

Music can change people. Can those people change the world?

coming up next

music popularity

skill in music

Thousands of people are marching against Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio tomorrow, including Zack de la Rocha of “Rage Against the Machine” fame. They are protesting Arpaio’s treatment of undocumented inmates, claiming that he has “subjugated and terrorized” them while they are under his custody.

I’m definitely not proud of this, but I spent some time in the tents back in the day. It was pretty nasty, which I think was the point.

I was there a handful of times for stints of a few days to a few weeks. During all of those visits, I never witnessed anything like what the protesters are claiming. I’m not saying that the claims are false, I’m just curious to hear what they’re going to claim.

The processing and placement of inmates seemed pretty standardized in my experience. We all went through the same hell-hole called “The Horseshoe”, where everyone in Phoenix gets processed. We all got tents, crappy blankets and nasty chunks of some sort of wonderbread. There was plenty of racism, but that was on display between the inmates, not the sheriff and his crew. I’m not defending him… I’m just curious what has changed since then.

The New Times quotes de la Rocha saying,

“To witness what is happening in Arizona and remain neutral,” De la Rocha is quoted saying in the media statement reprinted below, “is to be implicated in human rights violations that are occurring right here on US soil against migrants. History will not be kind to Joe Arpaio.”

Some pretty bold words… I’ll be tuned in tomorrow.
