Mini Seedcamps are smaller versions of SeedCamp Weeks that are being held in London once a year. The purpose of Mini Seedcamps is to provide an opportunity for local web-tech startups to connect with advisors and fellow entrepreneurs within some region. They are held between January and June in several locations across EMEA. Any European startup from any region can choose to apply to any Mini Seedcamp that suits. Last year ShoutEm was one of the winners of the Mini Seedcamp Ljubljana, and later we even got an opportunity to participate in the Seedcamp Week.

Every year the places where Mini Seedcamps are held are being changed, and we are very proud to announce Mini Seedcamp Zagreb to be held on 11th February! This is a great opportunity for all startups in Europe to present their solutions and connect with advisors, and also to visit Zagreb, capital of Croatia.

Here are some of the facts:

1. Whole event will take place in a new office of the Croatian Chamber of Economy, at the corner of the Heinzlova and Vukovarska street.
2. ShoutEm is one of the organizers of this event. We are, as winners of the Mini Seedcamp Ljubljana and the only participants at the Seedcamp Week from Croatia, very proud to be able to support this event.
3. Lunch will be sponsored by the RSG Capital from Slovenia.
4. Evening party will be sponsored by the Microsoft Croatia, and it’s BizSpark program.

IT Showoff

What if you have some great technology project, but you can’t register it for a Mini Seedcamp; if your solution is, for example, part of some larger project? You still have a place to show your solution to everyone interested. Day after the Mini Seedcamp Zagreb, event IT Showoff will take place at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing. This is a conference for all geeks who have some kind of a technology solution, and they would like to show it to the world. In the February, Zagreb will be the center for all startups and investors from all over the Europe. Will you be there?

I watch four squirrels run up and down a pair of snow-lined trees. The wood is damp and dark; the branches arch off in different directions, striking poses that remind me of oriental dancers. The squirrels disturb the comfortably sitting snow; small, furious flakes fly down from the branches and bark. Their running forms create shifting smudges on the white canvas.

Something about the furry with which they moves spells panic. They run up and down, up and down, up and down. Their little paws work furiously and their eyes dart around; the scampering continues. Maybe they were lazy. They thought they still had time to gather their nuts and pile up for winter. Maybe they are lost, searching for the rest of their party, but all the holes are filled with snow. I understand their confusion. Just a few days ago it was dry and bright. You could still spot the odd flowers and fallen leaves. Now everything is lost under an icy slush.

Even the benches in the park below, benches that are never empty, have lost their daily patrons to the snow. I miss the clique of bakas that gather in the afternoon. From my balcony I watch their hands talk, and their heads fall back in laughter. The playground is empty too, as it tends to be at this time of the year. No sequels of joys, no screeching tantrums climbing up the slope. My afternoons have become very quiet.

Twice a day, in the mornings and late afternoons, I spot a dog or two shuffling along the walkway; the owners follow slowly behind, hands stuffed deep in wool-lined pockets and head bent low. The dogs themselves do their business with little fuss; no summer curiosity, no sniffing around for hidden treasures or adventures. I sometimes wonder if they’d rather pee into a potted plant at home. Despite their coat of fur, surely they must get cold.

I am. From the minute I wake up to long after I’ve fallen asleep. I can feel slices of cold creep in through my soles and up to my fingers forming icy webs in between. It’s putting me in a state of permanent brain-freeze. Everything I do is iced with lethargy. I even type slowly these days – q-pause-w- pause-e-pause–r-pause-t-pause-y. And my mind prefers to slip back into warmer memories than tackle the to-do list. I give in and take the trip. Later, as a deadline approaches, l’ll panic and scamper, like the squirrels, in search of the now covered holes.

Since I work full-time all of my training sessions during the week are done before or after work. It’s hard to convince anyone to get up at 5AM to train with me so I train alone. That’s one more reason to look forward to weekends. During those two days I can train with a group. It’s no wonder so much sportsman (and woman) train in a group environment. Sessions are much more fun and you can push yourself a lot more. So if you don’t have a training squad you know what to do.

For the past two months Saturdays are reserved for hill running. We have a beautiful hill just above Zagreb. It’s highest peak is a little more than 1000 meters above sea level and the nature is beautiful there with thick forest and rich wildlife. This Saturday we finally received a glimpse of winter with about 10cm of snow near the top. It’s common to have 50-100 cm of snow on the hill in this part of the year, but this season has been mild so far (like every other season in the past couple of years). One of my childhood fantasies was to live somewhere in the mountains covered with thick forest and a lot of snow so I must say I enjoyed this training session a little bit more than usual.

I’m a member of the Matador Network, loads of great stories and pictures. One of the ones I read today got me thinking about the time I spent in Zagreb last year.

It was hot and I wasn’t feeling very well when I got off the train from Budapest, getting to the hostel I had been greeted by a very impatient woman behind the guest who had zero understanding of customer service. It wasn’t a good introduction to Zagreb and Croatia in general.

It was much later in the day before  I met some of my fellow travellers, a German and an American (unfortunately I can’t remember tier names and have lost some of my travel notes). there was the usual conversation, where are you from, going, and the other usual stories and jokes. Later the following day I was feeling a bit better and ran into the American guy again, he was heading out for a few drinks at a bar he knew of and I was invited, I agreed and we went down to watch Michael Phelps win yet another gold in Beijing.

While watching the inevitable I got chatting to another American guy, who knew the owner of one of my favourite record shops (Amoeba Music). He was of course invited to the bar too.

Sitting around a wooden picnic table outside a little shed like bar near the top of the funicular railway I was discovering a bit about a stereotypes, English stereo types. The German was shocked I didn’t like football and didn’t drink much (I don’t drink much normally these days and my current state of health was limiting that even more).

It was hard for the hard drinking football loving German to understand that English guy didn’t like football, it is a an unfortunate stereotype, drunken football fan and I hate it. I found I was surprised to be with two well travelled Americans and realised I was doing the same thing. I had a little laugh and decided not to do this again.

Now apart from trying to remove my countries stereotype, I’d like to say that everyone I met in that hostel (except the staff) were friendly and helpful. I hope I do not stereotype Croats in the future because of one experience and I hope anyone not from England reading this will not expect every English man to be a football fan, some of us like real sports!

The research for the piece Man.Chair was based on the repetitive capacity of authentic performance Man-Chair, first time performed in 1982 by Damir Bartol Indoš. BADco. wanted to reconstruct, remake, remix and upgrade the original peace (which is screened on video) using dance improvisations and individual approaches of dancers towards the technical and semiotic characteristics of the first performance Man-Chair. The aim was to build the theatrical structure from the performance art piece (which was never meant to be repeated) through the dance variations.

EAST-DANCE-ACADEMY (EDA) is a joint project by Center For Drama Art (Zagreb), National Dance Center (Bucharest), Maska (Ljubljana), Tanzquartier (Vienna) and Allianz Kulturstifftung. The project aims at affirmation of the situation as well as the modes of historical appearance of choreographic thought within non-institutional conditions i.e. it is a research into the ways dance developed specific strategies of self-organization, self-education and political activation. The two-year program What to Affirm? What to Perform? is in the framework of EDA.

Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.

Istraživanje za rad Čovjek.Stolac temeljilo se na repetitivnom kapacitetu autentičnog performansa Čovjek-stolicašsto ga je 1982. godine prvi puta izveo Damir Bartol Indoš. BADco. je željela originalni rad (koji se projicira na videu) rekonstruirati, obraditi, remiksirati i nadograditi služeći se plesnim improvizacijama te individualnim pristupima plesčca tehničkim i semiotičkim osobinama prve izvedbe Čovjeka-stolice. Namjera je bila, kroz plesne varijacije, iz umjetničkog performansa (koji nije bio (s)mišljen da se ponavlja) izgraditi kazališnu strukturu.

PechaKucha Night (PKN) su inspirativne i brze prezentacije zanimljivih kreativaca, neformalan prostor za predstavljanje i druženje te oživljavanje urbane kulture grada. PechaKucha Night osmislili su arhitekti Astrid Klein i Mark Dytham (Klein/Dytham Arhitecture) u Tokiju 2003. godine, a naziv potjeće od japanske rijeci za časkanje. PKN se trenutno organizira u 260 gradova diljem svijeta, a broj gradova je u stalnome porastu.

Zagrebački koncert njujorških ultimativnih mračnjaka Sunn o))) održan 28.10.2009. s pravom je bio najočekivaniji koncertni događaj godine.
Od 2006. godine, kad su zajedno s istomišljenicima Earth nastupili u Pauku, Sunn o))) su postali vrhunski hype, a mnogi fanovi upravo njih ističu da tako treba zvučati metal / hardcore / rock’n'roll za 21. stoljeće.
S ovime se ne bi složili „obični“ ljubitelji navedenih žanrova, no masa koja se natiskala u &TD-u uoči giga ovdje sigurno nije došla niti zbog hypea, a niti slušati «standardne» verzije metala i svih podžanrova. Sunn definitivno nisu bend za široke narodne mase i svekoliko ljubitelje pop-kulture.

Koliko god se danas pričalo o tim stjegonošama dronea nastup kakav smo mogli vidjeti i ovom prilikom u Zagreb definitivno je PREekstreman za prosječnog pop-konzumenta, pa makar imao iskustvo i s rubnim glazbenim područjima.

Kao predgrupa nastupio je dvojac Eagle Twin. Radi se o bučnom dvojcu koji kombinira stonerski zvuk s blues rifovima što na stajđu izgleda i zvuči znatno zanimljivije nego na CD-u. Bend je prije dvije godine osnovao Gentry Densley kome se na bubnjevima pridružio brat Tyler, a ove godine izdali su i debut album na Southern Lord Recordings.

Na stagu izgledaju baš kao dva simpatična dworfa koji se ne trebaju naljutiti da bijes, gnjev i tugu iskale na svoim retro-instrumentima. Kao i suborci im Sunn o))) Eagle Twin koriste nisko naštimane insturumente, lampaška Sunn pojačala i ljube teške rifove što je po mnogima izazvalo i veću buku od glavnih „zvijezdi“ večeri.

Sam početak nastupa njujorških dronera bio je „baš zvjezdan“: bend se pojavio na stejđu tek kad su moćne dim-mašine doslovno napunile zamračeni prostor &TD teatra.

Bend je od samog početka uspostavio toliko očekivani wall of sound iskorištavajaći do krajnjih granica velik broj antiknih Sunn i Orange pojačala kao i dodatne razglasne kutije postavljene publici iza leđa.

Prava crna misa počinje s izlaskom Attile Csihara na stage koji na mađarskom izvodi mantru s posljednjeg Monolith&Dimensions albuma pa je zato dio publike i ostao zatečen, osobito oni koji su uživali uz Void, Flight of the Behemoth, Black One i ostale starije uradke. Kako god bilo, zvuk koji je doslovce tekao iz „bogom danih lampaša“ stvarao je, zajedno s dimnom zavjesom, gotovo opipljivu melasu u kojoj su se prisutni lagano utapali. Zvuk Sunna na trenutke trese vidno polje, ježi kožu, tjera na povraćanje, a zajedno s Attilinom pojavom i glasom oživljava dobre priče majstora H.P. Lovecrafta i stvara tu klaustofobičnu atmosferu potpunog beznađa.

Metallica je nekad svirala Call of Cthulhu, da bi dvadesetak godina kasnije i prizvala vrhovne svećenike Arkham University predvođene O’Malleyem i Andersonom.

Kako je koncert išao prema kraju osjećaj vremena polako je nestajao pa da nema preciznih mjernih uređaja teško bi se moglo reći koliko je koncert trajao no završni performance koji je započeo Attilinom krunidbom a završio laser-claw najavio je završetak koncerta.

Da se pod kukuljicama ipak kriju naši frendovi pokazalo se ipak na kraju ove mračne predstave kad se ekipa iskreno zahvalila vjernoj, izdržljivoj i strpljivoj publici koja je uspjela istrpiti sve što su pripremili za svoj drugi dolazak na predziđe kršćanstva. •

Bled, Slovenia – July 26th, 2009.

Up pretty early by my standards, we leave at 9 for Canyoning, and I grab some breakfast – big tub of yoghurt – and wait for the girls at their hostel. They seem to have had a pretty big night after I left – with some picking up slovenian men and going for a midnight dip in the lake. Georgie is still drunk and does a ‘Ashley’ jig from Cesky.

We hop in the car, and head out of town.  Before being called back as someone was left behind. We go to our guides crib and pick up our equipment which consisted of running shoes, booties, wetsuits and helmets. Piling into the car, we get driven out into the hills of the surrounding mountains, and end up between Bohinj and Bled at a canyon site.

We are told to put ALL of our stuff in the wetsuit and place them on like a backpack – see pic for details. And hike up about 20 minutes to the top of the canyon. Where our guide tells everyone to immediatly go to the toilet, as not to piss our wetties. Its a bit of a struggle getting on the wetsuits for most people but before you know it, the guides giving us all the info we need before setting off down the river.

We climbed down into the canyon and were told to sit on the edge of this little pool – where the guide immediatly splashed us with ice cold water. Which was a good idea as we were just about to do our first dive into icy cold water.

The next few hours were spent traversing, sliding, jumping and climbing through a picturesqe canyon in Slovenia. And I must admit it was one of the most funnest activities I have done. Certainly an awesome experience. And plan to do it again, but at a higher degree of difficulty.

We go back to the hostel, where we cook up some yummy omelletes before I say goodbye to the girls and head off to the train station to go to Ljubljana and then a train to Zagreb. Before getting on a night train to Zadar.

This would have to be one of the worst, but certainly one of the memorable train rides I have taken. The first train to Zagreb was fine – it was an Austrian train so it was modern and up to date. However, at Zagreb – where I got a quick snap – and a feed. Before getting onto the next train.

The train to Zadar was an old fashion rattler, it had compartments and I’d managed to score one by myself for a while, til some friendly Germans joined myself in the carriage with an iPod dock and speakers. Thinking I’m gonna have a pretty good trip, the ticket conductor gets on board and tells me I have to go to a different carriage as this one will be seperated and going to Split, where as I’m going to Zadar.

So I head to the rear carriages as told, and I have a look at all the compartments. There is one with room – an old lady, a dog and a daughter (I presume) – and ask them if I can take a seat. Only to be rudely told “Seats taken” in a forrest gump kind of stupor. Fair enough. So I dump my back in the aisle and watch as the country side goes by in darkness with a twinkly of light.

I go to get comfy leaning up against my bag in the aisle, before the friendly Austrian girl who caught the train with me from Ljubljana comes up to me and says she has a spot for me in her compartment. Sweet.

The compartment is rather small, cramped and has 4 people. We all sort of spread out, and weave around each other as best as possible whilst trying to sleep. It was basically human tetris.

Its not long til we’re all drifting off to the rattle of the train carriage.

, dovoljno je pogledati ” u svojem dvorištu” i uvidjeti da je paralelno s stvaranjem  fotožurnalizma i genijalnim fotografima Henri Cartier Bressonom, Alfredom Stieglitzom, Bill Brandtom i drugima u svijetu u Hrvatskoj izrastao jedan sjajan fotograf koji je oblježio i dokumentirao jednu epohu u hrvatskoj povijesti.

Tošo Dabac (1907-1970) svoje najbolje radove kojima je hrvatsku fotografiju promaknuo na razinu najboljih radova već spomenutih pionira svjetske reportažne i dokumentarne fotografije,  fotografirao je u tridesetim i četrdesetim godina prošlog stoljeća.

S dolaskom drugog svjetskog rata Tošo Dabac ulazi u svojevrsnu autorsku hibernaciju i dalje stvara, no njegova su djela hermetična i usmjerena na neživo. Poslijeratno razdoblje vrijeme je svopjevrsnog ponovnog autorskog uzleta i dolazi do naovog zlatnog doba u stvaralaštvu Toše Dabca, tako u pedesetima i šezdesetima atelijer Toše Dabca postaje središte umjetničkog života u Zagrebu. Upravo iz njihovih druženja i svojevrsnog “brain storminga” proizlazi niz fantastičnih Tošinih fotografija, ali isto tako i dijela ujmetnika iz svih vrsta umjetnosti kojima se umjetnost hrvatske promovirala u svjetskim razmjerima.

Svojim fotografskim opusom Tošo Dabac  dokazao je da je fotografija dio umjetnosti, naučio nas je da fotografija može zračiti kao i bilo koje drugo  umjetničko djelo i pokazao nam da i najobičnija situacija u životu može biti prikazana na taj način da postaje i dokument vremena i umjetničko djelo u jednom jer smisao nije u vidljivom nego  u onome što se skriva iza vidljivog .

Tošo Dabac ostavio je iza sebe arhiv od preko 2000 fotografija izravno vezanih za grad Zagreb.

Ovaj tjedan, od četvrtka do nedjelje, u Društvenom centru Kino Mosor održava se međunarodna konferencija o europskim kulturnim politikama Exit Europe.

Exit Europe je međunarodna konferencija o europskim kulturnim politikama, s posebnim naglaskom na nove kulturne prakse u zemljama bivše Jugoslavije i kritičkim sagledavanjem procesa proširenja EU iz perspektive nastajućih političkih i socijalnih geografija.

Nakon otvorenja konferencije u četvrtak, 12. studenog u 17 sati slijedila je panel diskusija o kulturi u procesu pristupanja EU, o čemu su razgovarali predstavnici Europske komisije iz Bruxellesa (Xavier Troussard i Wenceslas de Lobkowicz), Ministarstva kulture (Nina Obuljen) te predstavnica europske kulturne mreže Culture Action Europe (Ilona Kish), odnosno regionalne mreža nezavisne kulture (Emina Višnić).

Prvi konferencijski dan nastavljen je predavanjem Opasne veze književnice Dubravke Ugrešić .

Organizatori Illectricity festivala iz Confusion ekipe raspisuju natječaj za nove DJ-e i glazbenike. Svi zainteresirani mogu poslati uratke na nucomers@illectricity.com, a specijalna komisija će izabrati finaliste.

Oni koji uspiju proći prvi krug glavni nastup će imati u AKC Medika u Zagrebu na otvaranju Illectricity festivala 28.11. uz jednog od ovogodišnjih headlinera, Jackmastera.

Ove godine su otvorene su dvije kategorije: DJ-i, te live actovi i bendovi koji sviraju elektronsku glazbu.

Pravila natječaja su sljedeća:

1) da se svira ili producira bilo koju mutaciju elektronske glazbe razbijenih beatova koja ne mora biti striktno drum’n'bass, breaks, dubstep…
2) da glazbenik još nije svirao, odnosno nastupao kao DJ/VJ na većim partyjima; niti službeno izdao svoju glazbu (ovo se odnosi na producente i bendove)

Koliko smo puta prošli kraj nje na Trgu Bana Josipa Jelačića? Nebrojeno sigurno, ili kao turisti ili kao stanovnici Zagreba. E pa za ovu prvu priču posjetio sam Gradsku Kavanu.

Vani je prilično kišilo i vaćao sam se iz knjižare sa vrećicom punom knjiga, što školskih, to i romana. Na sebi sam imao kraći crni kaput, levisice i neku majcu na kojoj je pisalo New York Times. Ne baš materijal za kavanu, ali prva mi je pala na pamet pa sam odlučio vidjeti kako je to unutra. Naime kako sam ušao u kavanu iznenadio sam se. Atmosfera je bila kao da se nalazim u pravom europskom gradu, svečana i gostoljubiva. Prvo što sam primjetio bila je manja skupina japanskih turista, oni me uvijek uspiju nasmijati kako se žele slikati čak i s konobarima.

Sjeo sam u malo uvučeniji kut, da se ne ističem i uzeo cijenik. Naravno cijene vrtoglavo visoke, ali nisam ništa drugo očekivao. Dolazi konobarica, odmjerava me pogledom, i očito nakon što sam prošao taj vizualni test, upita me: “Što želite naručiti?”. Ja onako i topa naručim crni čaj s malo mlijeka. Nisam dugo čekao. Konobarica je donjela na stol vrč sa kipućom vodom, šalicu, šećer, med, mlijeko i čaj. Ja sam pokušavao sakriti svoje oduševljenje i čuđenje, ipak rijetko se događa da vam netko donese sastojke za čaj, a ne već gotovu vodurinu sa tkozna kojim čajem.

Nakon takvog užitka za oči i nepce došlo je vrijeme da se pokupim. Platio sam nemalu svotu za čaj, ali bez grižnje savjesti jer sam znao da uz čaj dobivam i taj gostoljubivi osjećaj.

Naime nisam imao svoj fotoaparta uz sebe, pa sam ovu slikicu našao na interentu. No to je dovoljno samo da vidite otprilike kakva atmosfera vlada tamo. Pozdrav svima i do sljedećeg posta.

Det är alltid en besynnerlig upplevelse att mellanlanda i Zürich för att flyga vidare till ett mindre rikt land i Östeuropa, Asien eller liknande. Zürich flygplats är nämligen bland de mest exklusiva och lyxiga man kan tänka sig. De enda flygplatse rsom kommer upp i Zürichs nivåer som jag har i huvudet just nu är Kuala Lumpur och Hong Kong International Airport.

Zürich flygplats påminner mer om ett shoppingcenter än om en reseterminal. Det finns bara en terminal, och från den löper cirka fyra, fem, vingar ut där man i vanlig ordning hittar Max Mara, Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton och så vidare.

Mat då? Jo, visst, så länge plånboken tillåter. Ett Whopper meal på Burger King kostar runt 130-140. Ska du ha biff och pommes frites talar vi 200 kr och uppåt, och då köper man maten vid en food court. Lustigt nog är man aldrig speciellt hungrig i Zürich…

Efter att ha förundrats över schweiziska flygplatspriser bär det sedan av till nästa destination, i mitt fall Zagreb – där en Whopper, med pommes och dryck kostar 30 kr.
