Dubai’s bolt out of the blue is hitting markets globally, with the aftershock made worse by the thin liquidity conditions in the wake of the US Thanksgiving holiday and Eid holidays in the Middle East.  The sell off followed news by government owned Dubai Holdings of a six month debt freeze.  Estimates of exposure to Dubai vary considerably, with European banks estimated to have around $40 billion in exposure though what part of this is at risk is another question. 

The lack of information surrounding the Dubai announcement made matters worse.  The aftermath is likely to continue to be felt over the short term, with further selling of risk assets likely.  Indeed, there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding international exposure to Dubai or what risk there is to this exposure and until there is further clarity stocks look likely to face another drubbing.

The most sensitive currencies with risk aversion over the past month have been the JPY, and USD index, which benefit from rising risk aversion whilst on the other side of the coin, most Asian currencies especially the THB and KRW as well as the ZAR, and AUD look vulnerable to any rise in risk aversion.  JPY crosses look to be under most pressure, with the likes of AUD/JPY dropping sharply and these currencies are likely to drop further amidst rising risk aversion. 

The rise in the JPY has been particularly dramatic and has prompted a wave of comments from Japanese officials attempting to talk the JPY lower including comments by Finance Minister Fujii that he “will contact US and Europe on currencies if needed”.  So far, these comments have had little effect, with USD/JPY falling briefly through the key psychological level of 85.00, marking a major rally in the JPY from a high of 89.19 at the beginning of the week.  Unless markets believe there is a real threat of FX intervention by Japan the official comments will continue to be ignored.

It’s not all about risk aversion for the JPY, with interest rate differential playing a key role in the downward move in USD/JPY over recent weeks.  USD/JPY has had a high 0.79 correlation with interest rate differentials over the past month.  The US / Japan rate differential narrowed sharply (ie lower US rate premium to Japan) to just around 4.5bps from around 100bps at the beginning of August.  With both interest rate differentials and risk aversion playing for a stronger JPY the strong JPY bias is set to continue over the short term.

Is this the beginning of a new rout in global markets?  It is more likely another bump on the road to recovery, with the impact all the larger due to the surprise factor of Duba’s announcement as it was widely thought that Dubai was on the road to recovery.  The fact that the news took place on a US holiday made matters worse whilst the weight of long risk trades suggests an exaggerated fall out over the short term.

Il barbiere di Siviglia è un film che non può non piacerci.
Non è una trama facile da seguire, la durata è di quasi tre ore, ma che non si sentono tanta la gioiosità delle scene, nella rappresentazione di fine ottocento, nell’intrecciarsi dei balli, nel complesso di tradizioni che costituisce l’impenetrabile corridoio per comprendere l’anima russa. Il nome del film è preso da una macchina segatrice inventata da un eccentrico inventore, che si mette d’accordo con una donna americana (che giunge fino in Russia) che finge sua figlia per farla sposare con un Generale della scuola dei Cadetti dell’esercito Zarista, affinché possa avere dei fondi per continuare a mandare avanti la pubblicizzazione della sua invenzione. E’ qui che cominciano intrighi e intrecci che non si possono contare per quanti sono, ma la fatica per tenere il filo della trama, che non è subito immediata, è poca. La donna si innamorerà di un giovane cadetto, Tolstoij, che non ha niente a che vedere, di parentela, con il famoso scrittore, finendo per complicare il progetto del suo presunto padre.
Il finale è davvero originale, ed è il finale di una storia che racconta di una Russia prerivoluzionaria, immersa nella sua Tradizione, nei suoi balli di corte, nei suoi canti e nel suo senso di Fedeltà che si configura nella Persona dello Zar Alessandro III. Davvero commovente quando il sovrano si reca nella cittadella del Cremlino per ricevere il giuramento dei soldati, insieme al principino che lo imita nel giuramento. Le grida di “Urrà” allo Zar stringono il cuore a cui ha un senso di ammirazione verso quella civiltà che fu poi rovinata dall’eresia materiale. Non a caso la reazione della critica cinematografica fu pessimista: un film troppo incentrato ad esaltare un presunto splendore della Russia prerivoluzionaria, troppo folkloristico. A noi tutto ciò non può non piacerci, dove per noi folkoristico è una storpiatura moderna per descrivere un senso per la Tradizione che non è mai fine a se stessa. Un film davvero consigliato.

In the world of Zar there are two classes that are above nobility. These two classes consist of Magicians and The Order. These two groups as well as those who are chosen to be members of the congressional parties in their kingdom. Once four years have passed they are permited to leave their education and begin studying under the full ranked member who chose them after a n alloted time set forth by the instructor as to how long it will take to teach his skills to their apprentice. However the child from the noble family will go back to their original town and begin studying under the magician the arms master the acrobats and even the tight rope walkers and learn all they can while they stay at the castle after the child becomes twenty-five they will be made a tactician and put into a council of eight other tacticians after three years of this or if the Ringmaster were to die during this period then the child will be granted rule of the kingdom and a coranation will be held in which all related to them by thought or by blood will be in attendance. After the apprentices of other classes have finished the curriculum their instructors set out for them they will have a two year period in which they will work alongside their instructors and once this period is done they will be put in charge and depending upon their proffesion they’re instructor will be granted varrying levels of independance and freedom from their original job as a kind of retirement.

Markets are increasingly discounting stronger than expected Q3 earnings.  Further gains in equities and risk appetite may be harder to achieve even if profits continue to be beat expectations, which so far around 80% of Q3 earnings have managed to do. Measures of risk such as the VIX “fear gauge” have highlighted an increasingly risk averse environment into this week.  The negative market tone could continue in the short term.

The USD has found some tentative relief, helped by the drop in equities and profit taking on risk trades.  The fact that the market had become increasingly short USDs as reflected in the latest CFTC Commitment of Traders’ (IMM) report in which aggregate short USD positions increased in the latest week (short USD positions numbered roughly twice the number of long positions), has given plenty of scope for some short covering this week.

The USD has even managed quite convincingly to shake off yet another article on the diversification of USD reserves in China.  The USD index looks set to consolidate its gains over the short term against the background of an up tick in risk aversion.  The USD index will likely remain supported ahead of the main US release this week, Q3 GDP on Thursday, but any rally in the USD is unlikely to be sustainable and will only provide better levels to short the currency.

Given the broad based nature of the reversal in risk sentiment with not only equities dropping but commodities sliding too, it suggests that high beta currencies, those with the highest sensitivity to risk will suffer in the short term.  These include in order of correlation with the VIX index over the past month, from the most to the least sensitive, MXN, AUD, MYR, SGD, NOK, EUR, CAD, INR, ZAR, BRL, TRY and NZD. The main beneficiary according to recent correlation is the USD.

EUR sentiment in particular appears to be weakening at least on the margin as reflected in the latest IMM report which revealed that net long EUR speculative positions have fallen to their lowest level in 6-weeks.  Whether this is due to profit taking as EUR/USD hit 1.50 or realisation that the currency appeared to have gone too far too quickly, the EUR stands on shakier ground this week.  EUR/USD may pull back to near term technical support around 1.4840 and then 1.4725 before long positions are re-established.

In this world appearances will be radically altered. In that everyone will wear colorfull clothes that will have different colors sown visibly in patches throughout their attire. Now thats not to say that a sense of being an individual will cease to be but rather that the style of clothing will change to better understand the new age renaisance period they live in. Now the social order for royalty as far as dress is concerned a king, or ring master as we are going to call him, shall wear red and gold patched cloths underneath a purple robe and a white felt top hat adorned with gold thread as well as gems and other valuables in the form of their family crest of course this is mearly a show that would normaly only be worn in a public setting to clarify to the masses who is who. While in this world a group hold control known as the high ringmasters these ringmasters are dressed entirely in black from their overcoat to their clothes even their top hat which is not adorned with any gold, gems or anything of the sort the only gold that is on their person is a pocket watch, and a thin band of gold surrounding their wrist. Many odd people exist in this world from the acrobats of war, althe way to the tight rope walkers who supply the people with food and to the top of the system where the high ringmasters sit a t their vast tables drinking that of crushed grape mixed with sugar water as alchohol does not exist. The world stands at an odd point in time not only for itself but for the proggressing future which is seemingly backwards is all that can be called peaceful.

Vandag herdenk ons behoudende Afrikaners wat ons kultuur en geskiedenis lief het weer die geboortedag van Paul Kruger. Hy was die laaste president van die toenmalige Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, ZAR, ook bekend as die Transvaal. Hy was een van die leierskorps wat destyds gehelp het om die Boerevolk van die Transvaal se vryheid in 1881 terug te kry terug te kry nadat die Engelse Transvaal in 1877 geannekseer het. Nadat goud aan die Witwatersrand ontdek is, het hy ‘n lang en bittere politieke stryd gevoer om die ZAR se vryheid te behou. Insa ori chinezii au venit cu pregatiti cu super-negociatori, ori americanii au fost super presati de timp si bani caci desi General Motors au evaluat Hummer-ul la 500 milioane de dolari, vor accepta o oferta de doar 150 milioane de dolari.

Aquellos que ya hayan leído un poco de mi en “acerca de los autores” entenderán por qué, en especial, es de este libro la primera reseña que ofrezco.

Aunque las categorías oficiales en las que dicho texto se inscribe son ensayo y biografía, la verdad es que la manera amena y ligera en la que el autor va presentando la bien documentada información –basada en diarios, cartas y otros documentos de la época- convierten esta obra biográfica en una novela histórica basada en datos reales, sin  fantasías del autor –como pasa en otras novelas históricas- pero en un relato envolvente en el que se va entretejiendo la vida y obra de Sofía Augusta Federica De Anhalt-Zerbst y Holstein-Gottorp (mejor conocida como Catalina II de Rusia, “la Grande”)  desde su nacimiento en 1729, hasta su muerte en 1796, a la vez que describe le contexto histórico, político, social y cultural de la época en Rusia y gran parte de Europa.

Un libro lleno de datos, fechas, nombres… Pero también emoción, intriga, misterio, drama, romance… En donde la protagonista es una mujer alemana quien rompe con muchos de los cánones de la época, de los estigmas y tabúes que limitaban a la mujer, y se erige como emperatriz de Rusia, convirtiéndose en una de las figuras más poderosas de Europa y el mundo en  la época de la Ilustración. Una mujer valiente Siendo amiga de Voltaire y Diderot, fomentando el arte y el desarrollo socio-político-cultural de Rusia, pero gobernando de forma autocrática -como parte del llamado despotismo ilustrado-, representando todo el poder y plasmando así una de las tantas contradicciones en la personalidad de esta mujer, figura pública e histórica por demás interesante, admirable y controvertida.

Es un libro que puede ser leído desde la adolescencia.

Omul Zarurilor. O filosofie aparent simpla: alegi cateva optiuni carora le dai mai multe sau mai putine sanse si apoi dai cu Zarul. Ce hotaraste Zarul se indeplineste pana la capat, cu supunere si imediat. Viata devine o nebunie, ies la suprafata tot felul de lucruri care ai fi vrut sa le faci, dar nu aveai curaj. Acum e simplu. Transferi intreaga responsabilitate asupra Zarului (nu conteaza ca tu ai ales optiunile).

Acum ma intreb ce s-ar intampla daca am extrapola aceasta filosofie si in zona marketingului ? Cum ar aparea campanii cu mesaje curajoase, fara compromisuri !!! S-ar imputina campanile astea terne, cu mesaje cenusii, concepte triste, printuri care devin imediat gunoi, premii care nu intereseaza pe nimeni, s.a.m.d.

In plus toata lumea ar fi mult mai relaxata (client si agentie) ca doar Zarul a hotarat

Lasand gluma la o parte (desi e o gluma serioasa) cred ca am putea spera in viitorul apropiat la campanii mai altfel. Nu canalele de comunicare utilizate sunt problema, ci materialele / mesajele. Sa faci o campanie de drop mail cu rezultat zero (stiu eu pe cineva) suna aproape firesc azi. Dar, pe zi ce trece fiecare intelege tot mai clar ca mesajul si mecanismul comunicarii sunt cele care produc rezultate.

Sa iesi din rand este ceea ce trebuie sa faci. Daca alegi marketing direct, traditional sau amandoua, asta tine de alte aspecte.

p.s. stiu o fetita de numai 4 ani pe care daca o intrebi ce avem noi mai bun iti raspunde fara sa clipeasca: benzina (ca urmare a unei campanii Petrom ce ruleaza cu perseverenta pe TV); tot aceeasi fetita prefera Jerry’s Pizza pentru ca au cele mai vesele si ciudate flyere.

Rivangare episodi passati della mia vita. Questo è un mio punto forte. Soprattutto se si trattano di fatti definibili raccapriccianti e al limite della credibilità.

Una domenica estiva di 16-17 anni fa, la famiglia Carlone decise di impiegare le sacre ore di riposo e di preghiera, donataci dal signore, in una rilassante e simpatica gita a Torre Canavese, per vedere una mostra sui tesori dello zar. Di che zar si trattasse, non lo so.

Le intenzioni di trascorrere una giornata tranquilla c’erano. Dovevamo solo tenere un po’ di fede e di pazienza, sarebbe stata una questione di pochi minuti.

Risultato: facemmo più di metà viaggio in modalità effetto serra, mentre fuori si squagliava l’asfalto. Tutti paonazzi, una volta giunti a destinazione, constatammo con immenso piacere che ad attenderci vi era una coda alla biglietteria chilometrica.

Come ingannare il tempo, se non facendo tappa alla lurida turca del bar?

Mia sorella sentì lo stimolo di defecare, subito dopo che io e papà uscimmo dai bagni. Che tempestività.

Per non dover ripetere l’attesa allo sciacquone, i miei genitori indirizzarono la piccola Elena ad una cacata più sauvage dietro ad una macchina. Il fato maligno volle far passare, proprio in quell’istante, una coppia di fidanzatini in amore. Mia sorella, inibita dall’imbarazzo, interruppe bruscamente l’atto della concimazione in fase, purtroppo, già inoltrata. In parole spicce, si smerdò tutta.

Non potendo prevedere un tale imprevisto coprofilo, si rimediò a quel piccolo contrattempo avvolgendo quel piccolo spargiletame di mia sorella con delle pagine di un quotidiano. Una vera e propria cronaca nera.

Deviazione momentanea di tappa: andammo al Meleto di Gozzano, loco in Agliè. Lì un turista, non molto attento, mi diede una botta in faccia con la sua macchina fotografica. Per tutto il corso della visita, tirai degli urli degni da attirare l’attenzione persino di Milingo. Per vendicarmi dell’offesa appena subita, mi fiondai con odio, assieme a mia sorella, in direzione della preziosissima macchina fotografica d’epoca a soffietto appartenuta al poeta. Seguì un meritato ammonimento da parte del sorvegliante.

Alle 17 circa, sfiancati, incominciammo ad avviarci verso la strada di casa.  Però, continuava a dolere il dente avvelenato di Torre Canavese. Senza perderci d’animo, decidemmo di ritentare la titanica impresa. Per rendere più facili gli spostamenti, ci dividemmo nel modo seguente.

Visita del tesoro finalmente fu.

La vescica di Luciana necessitava di essere svuotata. I bagni del museo regalarono l’ennesima piacevole sorpresa: il pavimento allagato con un miscuglio di acqua, urina e cartaigienica disciolta. La nonna, inevitabilmente, si inzaccherò la gonna alla zingara e gli zatteroni in sughero. La reazione fu scontata: la donna inveì contro il personale sfruttato, minacciando di denunciare il direttore.

Ma il momento clou della giornata sta per incombere: la sottoscritta, dopo aver sbranato un mastello di pop corn, decretò come latrina un campo da tennis a lei congeniale. Di lì a pochi istanti un giocatore, in fase di smash, pestò in pieno la mia cacca. Ebbe così inizio il primo e, spero, ultimo torneo di Merdedlon. Come discorso d’inaugurazione, una serie di bestemmie.

Con non chalance, facemmo finta di niente e ci accodammo alle imprecazioni nei confronti di questo ipotetico animale selvaggio che cagò sulla terra battuta.

Per fortuna, una giornata è composta da sole 24 ore. Questa, in particolare, si concluse con un’insistente richiesta da parte mia e di mia sorella di consumare una pizza alle 22.

Ecco la valida alternativa alle domeniche da trascorrere a rubare matitine all’Ikea.

In tutto questo guazzabuglio di sentenze del Tar, ricorsi, Consigli di Stato, appelli, contrappelli, religione, religioni e crediti, mi sono sentito un po’ in dovere di illuminare i miei lettori agostani. Confesso di aver girato per qualche giorno tra un articolo e l’altro, senza capirci nulla: perché le cose che leggevo non avevano alcuna attinenza con la realtà così come la vedo e la sperimento nel mio lavoro.

I giornali hanno veramente dato il peggio in fatto di ignoranza e io continuo a domandarmi: se al teatro dell’opera mandano uno che sa distinguere il tenore dal soprano, perché a parlare di scuola non mettono uno che sa distinguere i crediti scolastici da quelli formativi? Non è un concetto difficile: ci sono milioni di persone che ci si trovano dentro e sono adeguatamente informate. Non avete in redazione uno con dei figli alle superiori? O un praticante che abbia fatto qualche supplenza di diritto?

Restano i blog, che spesso sono scritti da gente più informata; stavolta però il dibattito si è spostato subito ad altezze siderali: le solite frasi fatte, la solita ideologia da Baci Perugina, continuando a non capirci niente.

Poi ho letto l’intervento dello Zar e tutto è apparso chiaro. Come sempre. Grazie.

Markets can only be described as fickle as they gyrate back and forth depending on the latest news or earnings report and as a result direction is changing not just daily but also intra-day.  Investors in most asset classes will continue to focus on stocks especially the recently underperforming Chinese equity market (Shanghai A share index) which officially moved into bearish territory after falling by over 20% from its early August high. 

Various reasons for the drop can be cited including regulator’s curbs on the stock market, high valuations, absence of new fund launches, limits on institutional buying,  high level of new accounts adding to volatility, tighter regulations on real estate, etc, but whatever the reason the direction has been clearly downwards and the impact is being felt across markets.

The turnaround in equity markets during Wednesday’s sessions was dramatic and was led by the turnaround in Chinese stocks which dragged other Asian bourses down with it.   This outweighed any positive sentiment from Market positives so far this week including a strong reading for the German August ZEW survey which surpassed forecasts by a large margin.  This followed the extension of the TALF by the Fed, and a jump in the US Empire manufacturing survey at the beginning of the week.  

Aside from weaker equities the usual FX beneficiaries including the dollar and yen strengthened on the back of the Chinese stock rout.   S&P’s affirmation of China’s credit ratings and positive comments from China’s stats office about the economic outlook in the months ahead  failed to support sentiment.  This would have been expected to provide a positive backdrop for Asian markets but Chinese stock market jitters provided a strong headwind to local markets. 

Overall most measures of risk have seen a substantial improvement over the past few months but there is no doubt that nerves are creeping back into the market.   This time the nervousness is coming from China and worryingly it is swamping the effect of any good news on the global economy and earnings.   This may prove to be a blip on the long road to recovery in risk appetite but it is difficult to ignore such a sharp fall in Chinese stocks without looking at the potential contagion to other equity markets.  

On the FX front those currencies that are most correlated with risk aversion such as the Australian dollar, New Zealand dollar, South African rand, Indonesian rupiah, Brazilian real and Mexican peso will gyrate in relation to the moves in risk appetite.   These currencies have had the highest correlations with risk aversion over the past month and in the current environment will come under some pressure at least until risk sentiment changes again, which in this market could happen at any moment and without warning.

Da, mi-a luat ceva vreme să mă pot lipi din nou de o carte (după perioada excelentă de până acu vreo lună). Iar această carte a fost fix ce trebuia la aşa moment: nici ceva îmbâcsit, care să mă pună pe fugă, dar nici ceva prea de consum; aşa, de vară, fără să fie facilă sau seacă. În buna tradiţie a cărţilor de la Editura Trei, ambalajul unei intrigi de roman ascunde de fapt o temă de gândire în domeniul psihologic – mai mult o întrebare deschisă, lăsând loc de discuţie. În cazul de faţă întrebarea ar fi:

Ce-ar fi să renunţi pentru o vreme la liberul arbitru şi la judecata logică, şi să îţi iei deciziile bazându-te pe zaruri? Şi, mai departe: nu numai deciziile cu care te confrunţi, dar să-ţi creezi singur nişte opţiuni pe care să le urmezi apoi în funcţie de alegerea zarurilor. – Un instrument excelent în depăşirea sinelui, a normelor sociale, dar şi pentru explorarea diferitelor faţete ale personalităţii. Ai ocazia de a face lucruri pe care în mod normal nu le-ai face, iar dacă e să te tragă cineva la răspundere (fie asta chiar şi conştiinţa ta), ai o justificare bună: dom’le, aşa mi-au poruncit zarurile să fac.

Autorul (care scrie sub pseudonim) este el însuşi psiholog. Şi zice aşa: “Cu zaruri sau fără, viaţa e plină de pericole. Eu încurajez oamenii să facă tot ce n-au crezut vreodată că vor face, şi de multe ori asta face ca lumea să fie mai interesantă şi mult mai bogată.”

Cartea, după cum spuneam, se constituie ca un roman. Ca o continuare a precedentei: “Omul Zar”. Şi intriga e simplă: un trader de succes pe bursa din New York are viaţa perfectă, apartamentul şi barca perfecte, e pe punctul de a se căsători cu fiica şefului, femeia perfectă, şi se îndreaptă cu paşi siguri către viaţa perfectă a marilor bogătaşi din Manhattan. Numai că după 15 ani de absenţă apare în viaţa lui taică-su, un guru care propovăduieşte modul de viaţă după regulile zarurilor, are înfiinţate comunităţi de adepţi unde se întâmplă lucruri scandaloase – iar apariţia aceasta în viaţa perfectă a fiului e de natură să ameninţe perfecţiunea. Deci? Băiatul se duce să-şi înfrunte tatăl. În fine, intrigă subţirică, dar plăcută, şi nu chiar întotdeauna previzibilă.

Nu prea mă trage inima să dau vreun citat, pentru că oricât de amuzant, inteligent, sclipitor sau interesant ar fi un paragraf – dacă-l scot din context nu mai are niciun farmec. Semn că trebuie citită cartea cap-coadă. Dar totuşi o să scot câteva propoziţii dintr-un paragraf din cele speciale (o dată la câteva capitole apare câte o pagină cu diverse cugetări pe seama întâmplării, fără legătură cu intriga romanului).

“Orice fiinţă vie tinde spre homeostază – încearcă să-şi stabilizeze relaţia cu mediul la cel mai simplu nivel posibil. Vrea siguranţă, stabilitate şi simplitate. Pe de altă parte, tendinţa hazardului este să creeze nesiguranţă, instabilitate şi complexitate. Totuşi, fiinţele evoluează prin hazard, nu prin homeostază. Viaţa evoluează prin mutaţii – termenul ştiinţific pentru jocul hazardului. (…) Fără accident, biologia ar fi un univers de amibe. Fără accident, cultura ar fi un univers al societăţilor primitive. Fără accident, omul ar fi un univers de tăntălăi normali.”
