Ze Frank let the audience decide what he says in one of his episodes. He explain so many points in few minutes; He talks about france, well takes the mick out of it. He sings to gain your attention. He also talk really fast.  Some of the points that he covers in “The Show”, dated 06-09-06, are about gay pride, Fabuloso friday, Caffeine, David Beckham, Hair Gel, Bathroom Furnishings, World Cup, Same sex Marriage, Campfire Songs,Democracy, exhausted and others. Ze Frank makes video blogging fun to watch and to listen to, he also adds pictures in so your not just getting a video of of him. Unfortunatly I could not find the 06-09-06 episode on youtube so here is the 02-07-07 episode. Enjoy. 

In the video blog (vlog) I’ve just seen from June 9th 2006, he asked his followers to write the script for him.

In it they say that we Europeans have the wrong idea about what Football is.

I find this extreamly irritable. We, the English, invented the sport in which you have to KICK a ball with your FEET. For some reason, the Americans are the only nation on Earth who think that playing Football means THROWING the ball with your HANDS.

Why can’t the Americans just accept that we are right and they can admit for once that they are wrong!

Whew!  I’m finally back in town for a couple of days before heading to NYC on Wednesday.  I can’t WAIT until all of this traveling is over.

Just got back from the DesignerCon show in Pasadena.  I was pretty unprepared so I didn’t do very well there.  My intention was to split my booth between selling Sweet Meats and promoting my custom plush services.  Not knowing the set-up or having enough time, however, I lacked the appropriate signage and display materials to make this apparent to the attendees. I could have used some kind of collapsible shelving and a banner or two, or at least a second table.  As it stands, this is what my table space looked like:

Pathetic, no?  How the hell was anyone supposed to know what I was there for?  Well, they didn’t, and it was sort of a mess all around.  People kept trying to buy the things that were not for sale and they seemed surprised that I was the designer of all of the toys on my table.  Maybe for WonderCon I will make some huge buttons that say “I AM THE ARTIST. I am not the girlfriend of the artist.” and hand them out to the other artistic ladies there.  I will also make a giant banner to hang behind me that says something like “Custom Plush Toys from YOUR Character!” and shows a drawing of someone’s character next to a photo of some plush toys I made of that character.

DesignerCon was also the first stop on the Custom Yoka show’s tour.  I brought A.’s Yoka down but mine didn’t make it.  Oh well.  I will mail it to DKE for the show’s next stop at Black Maria Gallery.

All in all it was a good learning experience and a (relatively) cheap way to prepare myself for WonderCon in April.  I definitely need to get my name out there a little better and make sure I have a well-publicized “exclusive” for sale at the show.  Those exclusives seemed to be the main focus at DesignerCon.  Sure, some people were interested in the toy giveaways, artist signings and live painting on bikini-clad girls, but the lines really formed for the exclusive toy releases.  This designer vinyl business seems to be a serious investment strategy for a lot of collectors.

Some show highlights for me included meeting Ze Frank (to whom I gave a Shapin’ Bacon), being asked to sign a customer’s deli-wrapped Hambone, and being interviewed for Electric Playground.  I also sold enough to pay for the trip, so I really can’t complain.  Now if I can just catch up on my sleep, I’ll be all set.

Even after I had left and changed things to neighborhood only, I get
hits on this song.

Recently, I posted a redux on Stumpy. If you missed it, it’s worth a
watch/ listen. This song is from the Ze Frank project, too.

Oddly enough, I’m not that far from STL and Pastor Ray is from STL.
When Ze posted this viral song (it had been anonymously sent into a
local radio station and then spread nationally), it only took two days
for us Sports Racers to track down the singer (Pastor Ray). Ze flew to
STL and met him, interviewed him and it was just super!

Anyhoozles, since it’s such a favorite to so many people, I’m posting
it here since this is my place now. If you’re having a bad day, give
‘er a listen and maybe even sing along!

I appreciate this story so much that I started off the Vox blog with it. Hope you like “Stumpy” by Ze Frank as much as I did then and now.

-Ze had this nifty social experiment, which took off bigger than I think he’d ever have hoped it would. Maybe he knew it would, being a Professor and all. I was a part of it, a little duckie in the pond–didn’t go by MT then. Anyway, I used it less for social networking (like I do with everything, much to my detriment) and more for creativity, which is another kind of networking. Hard to believe it was “that long ago.”

Diplomacy isn’t like football. Instead of just trying to win, you also have to try to convince the other side that they won.

I appeal to you again, Ze Frank, please come to SF and whisk me away to your land of awesome funny poltical commentary… please?  I LURVE you.

Known for his incredible wit and timing (and being really danged smart), as well as his permanent place in history as one of the Web’s first successful vlog comedians, Ze Frank’s brilliance often shows up in the briefest moments.  Below is an example.

I think this is one of the best parts of the Internet.  No, I’m not referring to the act of flashing electrical sockets (necessarily).  I’m talking about the opportunity for having a personal stage for public viewing in order to showcase one’s creative gifts.  Yes, there are many (perhaps a larger number than not) who abuse this privilege, turning cyberspace into a massive junkyard of distorted and perverted creativity.  Nevertheless, there is still light in the darkness.  Hence, the electrical sockets…

Max Headroom is a precursor of the vlog – quirky, opinionated, schizophrenic, disembodied.

I think Ze Frank’s body of work, for example, bears signs of the Max Headroom influence. (Side note: I really wanted to embed this video rather than link it, but the bastard just wouldn’t embed.)

A few months ago my cousin passed away. At age 28, Amy caught pneumonia and was not able fight off the infection. As the news of her death spread, her Facebook was filled with postings by her friends and family expressing their sadness. Although a couple of her friends have access to her Facebook page and one even (eerily) used it to post a status and add friends posthumously, no one has deleted the account. I looked at it today for the first time since her death and people are still using Facebook to share their important events with Amy and reminisce with each other about all the things they love and miss about her. There are pictures of her being newly added and tagged. One friend even signed up for an account specifically to write on her wall and will be deleting it just as quickly.

Before, we mostly shared our grief with those physically in our vicinity or people emotionally close to us. Now, like everything else, our grief casts a wider net and we share it with more people, more strangers. Also, it feels as if my cousin continues to live in the periphery. I can see what her friends and family are up to, just like I can see what my other (living) cousins extended people are doing. Every post brings her back into focus if only for a moment. While I was not incredibly close to her, through the postings I see more clearly the sort of person she was and all the goodness that a person can be. Her Facebook is her flower and cross on the highway, her Kensington Gardens. I have no idea how long it will last. A few months is such a short time, and the wish that a loved one is still with us can stay for a lifetime.

I’m not sure what this means. I just found it incredibly beautiful and thought I would share it with you. I’m still digesting and get tangled in all the possible words.

Primeiro, o conceito que envolve o Paradoxo de Fermi

Sometime in the 1940s, Enrico Fermi was talking about the possibility of extra-terrestrial intelligence with some other physicists. They were impressed that our galaxy holds 100 billion stars, that life evolved quickly and progressively on earth, and that an intelligent, exponentially-reproducing species could colonize the galaxy in just a few million years. They reasoned that extra-terrestrial intelligence should be common by now. Fermi listened patiently, then asked simply, “So, where is everybody?”. That is, if extra-terrestrial intelligence is common, why haven’t we met any bright aliens yet? This conundrum became known as Fermi’s Paradox.

Basically, I think the aliens don’t blow themselves up; they just get addicted to computer games. They forget to send radio signals or colonize space because they’re too busy with runaway consumerism and virtual-reality narcissism. They don’t need Sentinels to enslave them in a Matrix; they do it to themselves, just as we are doing today.

The fundamental problem is that any evolved mind must pay attention to indirect cues of biological fitness, rather than tracking fitness itself. We don’t seek reproductive success directly; we seek tasty foods that tended to promote survival and luscious mates who tended to produce bright, healthy babies. Modern results: fast food and pornography. Technology is fairly good at controlling external reality to promote our real biological fitness, but it’s even better at delivering fake fitness — subjective cues of survival and reproduction, without the real-world effects. Fresh organic fruit juice costs so much more than nutrition-free soda. Having real friends is so much more effort than watching Friends on TV. Actually colonizing the galaxy would be so much harder than pretending to have done it when filming Star Wars or Serenity.

Around 1900, most inventions concerned physical reality: cars, airplanes, zeppelins, electric lights, vacuum cleaners, air conditioners, bras, zippers. In 2005, most inventions concern virtual entertainment — the top 10 patent-recipients are usually IBM, Matsushita, Canon, Hewlett-Packard, Micron Technology, Samsung, Intel, Hitachi, Toshiba, and Sony — not Boeing, Toyota, or Wonderbra. We have already shifted from a reality economy to a virtual economy, from physics to psychology as the value-driver and resource-allocator. We are already disappearing up our own brainstems. Freud’s pleasure principle triumphs over the reality principle. We narrow-cast human-interest stories to each other, rather than broad-casting messages of universal peace and progress to other star systems.

Maybe the bright aliens did the same. I suspect that a certain period of fitness-faking narcissism is inevitable after any intelligent life evolves. This is the Great Temptation for any technological species — to shape their subjective reality to provide the cues of survival and reproductive success without the substance. Most bright alien species probably go extinct gradually, allocating more time and resources to their pleasures, and less to their children.

My dangerous idea-within-an-idea is that this, too, is already happening. Christian and Muslim fundamentalists, and anti-consumerism activists, already understand exactly what the Great Temptation is, and how to avoid it. They insulate themselves from our Creative-Class dream-worlds and our EverQuest economics. They wait patiently for our fitness-faking narcissism to go extinct. Those practical-minded breeders will inherit the earth, as like-minded aliens may have inherited a few other planets.

The picture above is a scene you will find at Pluk de Nacht (carpe noctem in Latin). It is already the sixth year that this free, open air film festival is organised in Amsterdam.  Besides the fact that it is outside, the unique selection of unreleased independent arthouse cinema, documentary, animation and shorts that are shown is quite remarkable.

I was there on the 9th, when a retrospective of Ze Frank was shown. Ze Frank gained fame with his daily video blog ‘The Show‘ and has also been a speaker at TED. I actually didn’t know him before, but his work that I have seen was pretty hilarious! Gotta love the typical, dry type of humor though (also referred to as ‘nerdcore comedy’), so it might not be for everyone. Curious whether you would like it? You have one last chance to see his work since he will be giving a live performance tomorrow at Timorplein!

Entrepreneurialism is one path independent journalists can take now that content can be easily published online. Jim Brady, formerly with the Washington Post, addressed ways to establish one’s voice online and engage an audience. “The web is a meritocracy,” he said, in that good content online is worthwhile content, and as long as an interested audience can find that engaging material, the viewers will be there. Becoming a part of the larger online community by linking out and communicating with the audience through comments is key to success on the web.

In moving away from mainstream media, the next step after finding and keeping an audience is finding a revenue model that works. Brady mentioned mobile content as a potential way to generate revenue. Users may be unwilling to pay for news online, but they’ve shown willingness to pay for information that is useful and convenient to them. IPhone apps are good examples of this, where integrating information with GPS functionality is specifically useful to some consumers.

During the lecture, Ze Frank’s online presence occurred to me. Embodying a “new form of storytelling,” Frank posted a video every weekday for a year, calling the project “The Show with Ze Frank.” Initially, Frank assumed the role of a talking head, riffing on news and talking to the camera while throwing images on the screen. Eventually, “The Show” gained momentum as his videos became more popular and he involved his growing audience more and more. Frank used crowdsourcing for entertaining projects, such as dressing up vacuum cleaners, creating an earth sandwich and playing chess. After establishing a core audience, he was able to engage that audience in creative ways, which only expanded that audience further as news of these bizarre projects spread around the web.

Arguably a cult of personality sort of phenomenon, there are lessons to be learned from Ze Frank’s popularity as far as web content is concerned. He now produces a video series for Time.com called “That Makes Me Think Of,” which echoes the same sort of commentary he established during “The Show.”

I do, and the alphabetized list of Web heroes just doesn’t do him justice… so I thought I’d give him a blog post.

A long time ago, in a land not so far away I was inspired to vlog (video blog). My inspiration came from the show with zefrank — ze thought so I didn’t have to, freeing up valuable time for me to learn how to use a video camera and imovie.

I emailed him for vlog guidance along the way. He replied with insightful criticism and much encouragement, in the end it worked out great… 1 CASE District V award and 2 CASE International Circle of Excellence awards – kind of a big deal with the higher ed crowd.

His personal words of wisdom were enough to complete my man crush, but he went even further and agreed to do an intro for my show, the Stuff2Do vlog. Of course he owed me for the intro I did for him (the show 09-13-06 – yep, that’s my mouth). No, he didn’t owe me, but that’s how I convinced him to do it.

Below you will find my attempt to be as awesome as ze, sure I fell short, but having him do an intro for my show was better than any award I could ever win. Thanks ze, for not only being my hero, but for making me think even when you said I didn’t have to.

Tip for the higher ed crowd: Don’t pay attention to the latest and greatest in higher ed, look over the campus walls for inspiration. Then copy it and win awards. Job security FTW!

Last night i watched this video of Ze Frank (below).  He’s a kooky guy but totally entertaining. I do like that he takes common elements of the internet and uses them to better connect people and to create social happenings and actual events and items.   Instead of people trying to create products and platforms, he’s actually trying to create content in innovative ways – which i find both interesting and refreshing.  I think some of the things he posted in here were just awesome.

First, he found this song on the internet that a dad was singing for his daughter called “I’m going to whoop somebody’s ass”.  He took the song asked his fans to sign along and interact. The fans did that and more.  This song spawned countless numbers of remixes. A video was created. A video was story boarded by a member of the “audience”, then another member offered portrait sketches to anyone who would help fill in the video. The video was made.  The remix appeared in a movie, in a car commercial and countless other places and suddenly the creator – a unsuspecting PhD-turned-preacher nammed Ray, now finds the trajectory of his life shifted, as he is inundated with countless versions of his song, in audio and even video format.  Awesome.  (below is a video remix of Ray’s song)

Ze does a lot with songs.  Another intance, he created a song for a woman who wrote in that she was scared of the dark and he made up a song for her.  You can hear that song by clicking on the image below

Another fun thing that he did was called “youngme / nowme” where people take picturs of themselves when they were young and recreate those pictures now.  It’s hilarious to see what people have done.  Some are simple, some are very involved.  In both cases, they are fun to look at.  He’s got a whole site with the submissions here 2gfdyuszhp

There are lots of examples of cool things Ze has done in his talk.  These are just a few.  I always enjoy his creativity and if you have some time, it’s worth checking out.
