Just went down to the Rotary Tower after cricket training tonight. Was this awesome warm light tonight. Would have been good to get out the Fergy Valley, or somewhere where I could get a decent composition, but this was all I could do as I didn’t have much time after training. Not sure I’m a fan of it though……..let me know your thoughts!!

It can be frustrating when using a DSLR system such as Sony. There simply is not the same amount of resources for Sony shooters as Nikon or Canon shooters. Sure, gear is just gear but it helps to have a community of users who understand your joys and pains. We Sony shooters may not have a gazillion sites to go to but we do have many to choose from. In this article I will try to share some of my favorite sites to go to when it comes to Sony Alpha information.

1) Dyxum : Simply the largest gathering of Sony shooters and with that comes all the knowledge of the Sony Alpha system. Want to know if a certain lens will work on your A700? This is the place to ask that and many more questions. Known for their awesome forums, Dyxum is also a great resource when it comes to researching your next purchase. From lens reviews to photo contests, this site has it all for FREE.

2) kurtmunger.com : I take my hat off to people that take the time to share their knowledge and skills with others. Photographers are unique in that while it would be more beneficial to hold back certain knowledge, photographers share everything. This is what Kurt Mungers does. The gem of this site is the Sony/Minolta AF lens price guide. You can see what a lens is worth using real world pricing. You can see what items are going for on sites like ebay and trending data to support these prices. A absolute must visit.

3) Photoclubalpha : Another good forum site with a wealth of knowledge. A great place to ask beginner type questions and to see how good the images from Sony DSLR’s really are.

4) Sony Alpha DSLR camera’s group on Flickr : So gear talk is good and all but sometimes we need to step back and realize why we all have this gear. This is one of the largest Sony Alpha groups on Flickr. Flickr is a great way to view others work. Share your photos and look at others. The best way to improve your photography is to learn from the mistakes and successes of others.

These are just a few of the sites out there that are vital to the Sony Alpha shooter. Enjoy!

This tired old debate has just resurfaced on a post in a dpireview.com  forum. I have shot with Leica lenses in the past, owned several Zeiss optics on a Contax 35mm (as well as shooting Hasselblad), and have owned and used Nikon lenses for over 40 years.

All of them … Leica, Zeiss and Nikon have produced perfectly satisfactory results. None of them have had me screaming “look at that photograph … I must have all Leica, or all Zeiss or all Nikon lenses.”

I am sure that exhaustive, and scientific testing could see differences between them in terms of sharpness, contrast, bokeh (but who really gives a stuff about this? I shoot for the subject not whether or not the out of focus background looks prettier in one shot than another.The cult of bokeh is an annoying irrelevancy) colour rendition, maximum speed and so on.

In the final analysis though, it is the image that counts. Millions of photographs have been taken, and millions reproduced from all three and I have yet to hear “Wow? I bet that was shot with a Zeiss! Or a Leica! Or a Nikon!” Most people couldn’t care less. And that’s the way it should be.

Buying one over the other won’t make you a better photographer. Lenses, like cameras, are only tools. And using that as an analogy, do you ever wonder if that screw in the door hinge was inserted by a Makita, or a Bosch, power screwdriver? Of course not, so why fret over the make of lens. If you truly want a Zeiss, or a Leica, by all means buy them … but I wouldn’t sell a Nikon to do so. Any improvement would hardly be worth the money, and don’t expect an improvement in your photography.

It is almost official: Mingus [my dog] might have ordered a second Hasselblad lens for my Christmas present this year! The word on the street is that he is awaiting delivery of a 120mm Makro-Planar CFI f.4 lens from KEH Camera in Atlanta, Georgia. I will admit that I am totally in love with the V Series lenses made by Zeiss, and have found that the 80mm Planar CFE f.2.8 lens I procured two months ago has become my favourite lens for still work. The Zeiss glass simply looks more professionally photographic in a timeless way. Obviously, it does have its limits as I am forced to shoot fully manually, need to use a lens adapter ring from Photodiox and without the ProShade I have gotten too much flare from a white background. Choosing a 120mm macro lens seemed to make the most sense right now because 90% of my photography commissions have involved food, and with product photography being able to get in tight to a product is critical when packaging shots are involved. I am hoping for great things from this lens and will make sure to put up some samples and a review in the weeks to come…after Christmas.

It has been an interesting week in terms of work. My first takes on the upcoming book cover photo were reviewed by the author and now an official re-shoot can happen tomorrow. The video editing in Final Cut Pro I was doing for a client is approaching completion, and I have four boxes of cookware in the studio that need various styles of photography accomplished; a kitchen full of food will be required to fill the shots. I am also about to call Vistek to inquire about renting a Phase One 30+ digital back for the Mamiya medium format camera, because I will need higher resolution than the 10 megapixels that my Canon EOS 1DmkIII allows.

On the fun front…I am hoping to do some neat Christmas photography for my portfolio. Christmas is a magical time of year for me, and I would love to capture the lights and food of the holiday in a series. Stay tuned for some examples of my latest work!

I miss my Zeiss, I will start using it again after my Nikon D700 is back from a CLA service.

Pourraient-elles remplacer les écrans TV?

Il est maintenant possible de voir des films en grand écran et en plus en 3D sur n’importe quel lecteur multimédia. Selon les dires, ces lunettes sont capables de restituer une image de 115 cm. La résolution est de 640×480 pixels. Les lunettes ont des écouteurs intégrés mais il est également possible de connecter d’autres systèmes auditifs.
L’entreprise a pensé également aux personnes qui portent des lunettes en adaptant sur les lunettes des paramètres de dioptries.

Ces nouvelles lunettes ont été conçues pour les baladeurs audio-visuels mais essentiellement pour l’Iphone et l’iPod. Cependant, selon certaines personnes qui ont essayé ces lunettes, il est dit qu’avec le Nokia N95, on peut voir tout ce qui est affiché à l’écran du GSM tandis que sur l’iPhone on ne peut voir que les vidéos.

Les lunettes sont rechargeables via un câble USB et celle-ci peut rester jusqu’à 4 heures d’autonomie et pèse 175g. Les lunettes Cinemizer + seront disponibles en noir, blanc, argent, gris et rouge au prix de 400€.

Carl Zeiss est une marque reconnue en terme d’innovation technologique et existe depuis plus de 160 ans. Elle est spécialisée dans le domaine de l’optique, de la recherche médicale et des biosciences ainsi que les produits publics comme les lunettes et les jumelles.

Bien sûr l’idée de mettre sur le marché cette nouvelle technologie leur est venue d’une autre entreprise Vuzix qui avait auparavant lancé le même gadget. Alors innovation ou pas ?

L’innovation technologique est un domaine sans fin. Souvent, une marque précurseur proposant un produit innovant sur le marché et qui en plus se vend bien reste généralement dans la tête du consommateur. Cependant, dans le cas de ces nouvelles lunettes, la marque Vuzix avait déjà lancé cette innovation sur le marché avant Zeiss. Dans ce cas on ne parlera pas d’innovation. Ces nouvelles lunettes sont bien sûr une « révolution » puisque le 3D est en pleine expansion. De nos jours, il est courant, de pouvoir voir des films en 3D et donc ces lunettes tombent à pique. Mais ce produit, je pense, ne battra pas un record de vente. Tout le monde ne va pas s’acheter une paire de lunette à 400€, il ne sera donc pas accessible à tous. La motivation des gens à acheter ce produit sera faible puisque ce ne sont que les gens qui ont assez d’argent qui décideraient d’acheter ça. De plus, ce n’est pas sympa de regarder un film seul, en général on préfère être plusieurs. On est également limité dans nos mouvements avec nos yeux fixés dans nos lunettes. Peut-être dans un futur lointain tout le monde possèdera une paire de lunette 3D. Pour ma part, il m’est difficile d’imaginer que des lunettes pourraient remplacer un écran 115 cm.

I went to the car boots sale yesterday morning and got myself this….

ZEISS IKON NETTAR

 The exterior of this system is good but with some minor scratches that could only be seen from a close range.

 The glass is clear, shutter seems to work at the accurate speed, but the aperture doesn’t seem to work. Servicing is needed, so if any of you out there (around UK) knows where I can get it fixed, do let me know. Thanks!!

 This camera is well-kept in the leather case hence the cleanness of the body and I bought this for a surprising £2!!

Auf der Industrieausstellung bei der DGEndo-Tagung fiel mir sofort auf dem Stand der Firma Jadent ein sehr heller Lichtspot auf. Dann habe ich auch noch auf dem Mikroskoparm die Aufschrift „LED inside“ (abb1) entdeckt.

Sehr spannend, wurde ich just am Tag vorher von einem Teilnehmer nach einer Beleuchtungsalternative zu Halogen, Xenon oder Metallhalide gefragt. Mein Wissensstand war, dass LED noch nicht so weit war. So kann man sich täuschen.

Das Licht ist sehr hell und das obwohl die nominellen Werte nicht so berauschend klingen. Aber dennoch, der Spot war blendend. Neugierig wie sich das Licht klinisch bewährt bat ich Jadent um eine Leihstellung. Diese erfolgte am Dienstag, leider wurde das Mikroskop am Donnerstag wieder abgeholt. Damit bleib mir nicht genug Zeit, Fotos mit dem Mikroskop zu schießen um über die Belichtungszeit eine halbwegs vernünftige Einschätzung zu erhalten. Aber das wird sicher nachgeholt werden.

Was ich aber sagen kann (nach 7 Behandlungen mit diesem Mikroskop): exzellent. Das Licht ist hell genug bis zur 16x Vergrösserung, um damit noch ordentlich arbeiten zu können. Erstaunlich. Das Beste: keine Lüftergeräusche, keine Hitzeentwicklung, alles im Standard-Lichtkasten des Kaps montiert.  Meine Hand hielt ich etwa 2 min. über dem Lichtaustritt und hatte keine Verbrennungen 3. Grades.

Beim Xenon würde ich mich das nicht trauen

Flugs den Leuchtkasten aufgeschraubt und mal nach der LED-Zelle geschaut. Verblüffend. Verblüffend klein. Sehr klein sogar für die Lichtmenge und den guten Eindruck. Kein Vergleich mit den Zusatzgeräten für Xenon. (abb 2,3)

Von oben fotografiert sieht man die Zelle mit einer Sammellinse.  Offensichtlich reicht die Linse aus, um das Licht gut und gleichmässig in den Lichtleiter zu schicken. Dieser ist auch nicht mehr den Hochtemperaturen wie beim Xenonlicht ausgesetzt, was der Langlebigkeit sicher zugute kommt. (abb4)

Man bemerkt sofort, der Durchmesser ist kleiner als bisher. Was Luft nach oben lässt.  (abb5)

Vorläufiges Fazit:

Die LED-Beleuchtung hat mich begeistert. Es hat viele Vorteile, wie z.B. eine lange Lebensdauer, keine Hitzeentwicklung, keine lauten Lüftergeräusche. Das Spektrum des Lichtes ist angenehmer, tageslichtähnlicher als Xenon, was aber in der Natur der Sache liegt.

Weiterer Vorteil: gute Integration im Gerät. Kein zusätzlicher Leuchtkasten, kein zusätzlicher Stromanschluss mehr, keine Fernbedienung o.ä.

Die momentan verfügbare Lösung zeigt, dass es prinzipiell geht und dass diese Art des Lichts auch einsetzbar ist. Wenn man das Kaps mit einem Mitbwerber von der Beleuchtungseite vergleicht, fällt auch die verschiedene Farbtemperatur auf.

Aber Vorsicht: Es geht dabei ausschliesslich um die Farbtemperatur, um nichts anderes. Ein weiterführender Vergleich zwischen diesen zwei Geräten scheidet aus mehreren Gründen aus. Definitiv. Ein ungleicher Vergleich, so in etwa zwischen einem Passat und einem Bentley.

Würde ich es mir kaufen? Um eine definitive Empfehlung auszusprechen habe ich nicht lange genug mit dem Gerät gearbeitet. Aber das erste Gefühl ist gut. Und meiner Meinung nach ein Schritt in die richtige Richtung.
