Zena Holloway - Underwater Photography

Zena Holloway lives in London. When she was 18 she was a scuba instructor and traveled around the world teaching others. This profession led her to find her true passion in life—underwater photography. She taught herself almost everything she knows. She uses very unique techniques with unthought-of of props and light sources. She manipulates shutter speed and other elements to truly capture a masterpiece.

Her photos aren’t your average underwater; her photos consist more of models. There is so much thought put into her photos. The models have costumes and have their make-up done. They also pose in distinctive ways. She even works with babies and infants. Infants are hard enough to take “normal” photos of, much less taking underwater photos.

She has won many international awards. And she’s done photo shoots for companies, such as Nike, Herbal Essence, Sony, ect. Her work appears regularly in magazines. She recently finished a project to illustrate the novel The Water Babies.

I absolutely love her photos. I’m a huge fan of underwater photography. However, normally when I think of underwater photography, I think of fish and coral. I have seen in shows such as “America’s Next Top Model” where they make the models attempt to pose underwater. But I’ve never seen anything as great as these photos. She captures so many different ideas. Most of the time she uses women as her models, but sometimes there’s infants and animals. The pictures just fascinate me, since sometimes I have difficulty capturing an image on land.

The folks over at  This Blog Rules, have a very cool “Creative Stuff” section (officially added to my RSS feeds). Recently they posted a peice called ”Underwater Photography Has Never Been This Exciting“, which has been circulating around the blogosphere and social media circles lately. It’s a great collection of some very creative conceptual and fashion underwater photography from some excellent photographers. I’m proud that they have included a few of my images (including the image below, which I had yet to post here) - thanks guys.

I know most of the other photographers, except for one. Included are UK based commercial underwater photographers Zena Holloway and Candice, Alix Malka (who apparently only shot underwater for this one assignment – but what an assignment it was, the styling was just beyond amazing and the images speak for themselves). Elena Kalis (who embarked on an unber creative Alice in Wonderland series with her daughter as Alice), Barbara Cole (very successful US based underwater photographer), and Sarah Lee (the only photographer I don’t know personally – she’s an 18 year old photography student who apparently has a bright career ahead of her – made me feel a bit old).

A large fraction of ’style’ is inspiration. Style inspiration should not just come from other hominids or existing attire, but from a variety of unrelated sources. Art, music, food, architecture, elements, travels, experiences, etc etc etc. 

Alright, enough of the reasoning. I really just want an excuse to post these images.

Zena Holloway achieved acclaim in the late 90s with her photographs of underwater babies. She was awarded the Silver Medal for her “Waterbabies” entry by the Royal Photographic Society in the 1998 International Print Competition.

Since then she has continued to photograph babies and children swimming underwater, though the rest of her commercial portfolio has expanded to include otherworldly, fairytale images of adults and marine wildlife.

Zena is probably the leading professional underwater photographer in the world today. She has published numerous coffee-table style books and early learning board books for babies. Her recent publications include Enfants d’Eau, Sirènes, Waterbaby! and Counting and Colours (Waterbabies).

I find it most remarkable is that she is self-taught. This only goes to reinforce my belief that the truly innovative talents are usually unbounded by conventional institutional thought and instruction.

My picks from her portfolio don’t include cherub-like infants. These glowing, ethereal images transport the viewer into a magical, mythical, sometimes erotic innerspace.

In searching online last night for sea fauna reference for our Over and Under show at Openspace, I came across the work of Zena Holloway. Her underwater photograpy is breathtaking. I spent two hours on her site and am speechless.

The big piece I am working on is coming along nicely and I am hoping to have it inked out tonight. I’m focusing on the idea of weight. Not the physical, but the sub-conscious. The things that we carry around with us in our lives which we may or may not be completely aware of: habits, mannerisms, collections of emotions and memories. A bit of an emotional exploration. Traveling the world working as a SCUBA instructor Zean Holloway must have spent some serious time under water. And it shows from the polished underwater visuals she produces. In what can be a tedious and under achieving affair, Holloway seems to have mastered the art with a portfolio full of beautiful images and motion film. Check her site HERE
