ROME, NOV. 27, 2009 (Zenit.org).- A flurry of print surrounded Benedict XVI’s meeting with artists last Saturday. Some papers exclaimed over the Italian music and cinema stars, others focused on the political tightrope of inviting Israeli directors and Iraqi architects. What every pundit seemed to agree on was the “divorce” between art and the Church.

That sounded strange to this art historian. When, I wondered, was art ever married to the Church? When were they two inseparable and equal halves made one? Would it not be more accurate to deem the current estrangement between artists and Christian culture as a manifestation of art’s extended adolescence?

The Church was the greatest art patron for over a millennium, recouping the dying arts of antiquity, rescuing artists and their works from the mania of iconoclasm and offering the painters and sculptors of the Renaissance a chance to rise above their status of craftsmen and become “artists,” people whose minds are as engaged in their works as their hands.

In this way the Church acted like a nurturing father, providing education and boundaries but also exhorting artists to cultivate their gifts, to learn and experiment and grow in their talents.

Patronage, derived from the Latin word for father, channeled man’s creative instinct and challenged it to the highest goals; representing the history of humanity and salvation, and encouraging their brothers and sisters to aspire to beauty in their lives.

Painters and sculptors thrived with the Church’s patronage, reaching the greatest pinnacles of artistic achievement, and earning the coveted title of artist. The Renaissance saw the masters of formal techniques such as fresco, stone carving, perspective or foreshortening become accepted as thinkers. They were enrolled among the prestigious liberal arts to stand as peers among the theologians, philosophers and mathematicians.

Flush with this achievement, the artists of the Baroque era rushed to defend the Church against the iconoclasm of the Reformation. Caravaggio’s powerful calls to holiness and Bernini’s harnessing of the supernatural though art and architecture illustrate a loving filial loyalty.

But as artists discovered their great potential to persuade as well as to confer social status, they increasingly experienced the nurturing environment of the Church as a constraint. The challenges became restrictions, the sacred stories grew stifling. Artists left the comforts of home to seek out new subjects. Nature, politics and pleasure called and artists used their finely honed talents to vividly explore the world around them. They tried to see in every aspect of nature and man the same greatness they had found at home in the Church.

At the turn of the 19th century, artists found a new subject that would captivate and enslave them: themselves. As Freud offered man his own psyche as a principal frame of reference, the artist, like Narcissus, found himself lost in his own reflections. Soon he abandoned formal training, devoting his full attention to his own feelings and perceptions. Expressionists, Surrealists, Modernists became their own muses.

And so it came to pass that today’s angry, sulky, self-absorbed adolescents of art chose to provoke instead of persuade, titillate instead of stimulate, and rage instead of reason. And like many teens before them, they marked their maturity by rejecting their fathers. Producing a frog on a cross or the Blessed Virgin in elephant dung became “art.” They ridiculed, disdained and desecrated their ancestral home in the name of an unspecified “freedom.”

And as is the case with such adolescents, people stopped paying attention to them.

The Holy Father has been standing at the doorway — Paul VI in 1964, John Paul II in 1999 and now Pope Benedict last Saturday — calling out for their lost children and waiting with open arms for their return.

The real question is, when will the prodigal sons decide they have had enough of the pigsty?

Lights and shadows

Like the epic story of Michelangelo’s commission to fresco the vault of the Sistine Chapel, the valiant attempt to re-establish the dialogue between art and the Church last weekend had its moments of agony and ecstasy.

That artists found the initiative to ask to meet with the Holy Father brought a spirit of cooperation to the events, an openness on their part to seeing the Church with mature and appreciative eyes.

The Pontifical Council for Culture responded by inviting artists of all types; architects, musicians, authors, filmmakers, installation artists as well as painters and sculptors. Art historians know we have an interdisciplinary field; literature, music and space play a large part in many works of art. The opportunity for these men and women from their varied disciplines to unite amid the art of Michelangelo was like scattering seeds on the most fertile of soil to see what might grow.

Furthermore, the artists visited the extensive collection of Modern Art held in the Vatican Museums. Hundreds upon hundreds of works testify to the popes’ continued interest in their efforts while a few jewels by Van Gogh, Matisse and Chagall demonstrated that artists who had garnered fame and fortune in the secular realm had eventually confronted the tremendous legacy of sacred art.

The address of Benedict XVI evoked the spirit of patronage of old. The Holy Father praised the contribution of the arts to the Church’s “unvarying message of salvation.” Emphasizing tradition and transcendence, the Pope described the true nature of “shock art” that “opens afresh the eyes of his heart and mind giving him wings, carrying him aloft.” As the Sistine Chapel amazed and the Bernini’s Ecstasy of St. Teresa dazzled, viewers could glimpse the sublime of the supernatural, hidden just beyond their mortal eyes.

By contrast, the art that jolts people through say, a rotting cow’s head (Damian Hirst) or a porcelain effigy of Michael Jackson and his pet monkey Bubbles (Jeff Koons) offers nothing to bring man out of himself.

Pope Benedict warned of “seductive but hypocritical beauty that rekindles desire, the will to power, to possess and to dominate.” Using no glossed-over terms, or popular political correctness, the Holy Father admonished an art which “takes on the guise of indecency, transgression or gratuitous provocation.”

But as hope began to shine through the sturm und drang of contemporary art, a few dark clouds still weighed heavily on the horizon.

For one, the selection of artists weighed in as overwhelmingly heavy on Italians. While Italy did produce Michelangelo and Raphael, it might be wise to remember that they were foreign nationals who needed passports to enter the Eternal City.

The lack of translations and the emphasis on things Italian gave the event a strangely provincial flavor. One of the artists present noticed that the first six rooms of the modern art gallery were dedicated to Italians, not exactly the forerunners of contemporary art.

The artists were not given any opportunity to interact. No seminars or breakaway sessions for architects to converse or film makers to exchange ideas, so the vivacious interchange that inspired Dante and Giotto during their time in Padua had little opportunity of being repeated.

Particularly disappointing were the great absences from the English-speaking world. John David Mooney, whose monumental light sculptures have illuminated everything from Chicago skyscrapers to the Pontifical Villa at Castel Gandolfo and video wizard Bill Viola were both invited, but several others were overlooked.

Noticeably missing were the producers or stars of the Passion of the Christ, one of the most successful Catholic art works of our age, as well as Duncan Stroik, the leading architect of sacred structures in the United States. The United States funds the arts heavily and forms the backbone of the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, who pay for the restoration and conservation of the collection. Despite the tremendous creative and economic energy that the Anglophone world infuses in the arts, Americans and Brits were a distinct minority.

The most jarring aspect of the event to the ears of this art historian was the repetition of the tired old mantra, “art must be free.” Caravaggio was not free to do as he liked and when he did, his work was rejected. Bernini, Velasquez or Jan Van Eyck were not at liberty to execute any passing fancy. The idea that one might give a Gospel to an artist and then let his imagination run wild is very similar to suggesting that a theologian interpret the Bible in whatever way he feels is best.

But the excitement of anticipation has not deserted art completely. In a brilliant spirit of engagement, the Vatican has proposed to set up a pavilion at the Venice Biennale, one of the most important contemporary art shows in the world. The proposed project would be scenes from Genesis, given to different artists to engage not only with the Biblical text but with the greatest themes man can consider: creation, evil entering the world, the first murder, the origin of love etc.

This challenging commission, inviting artists to look outside of their own experience and think in terms of universality is a first, important step toward the reconciliation of art and the Church.

This isn’t going to generate front-page headlines, but the Church in Angola is engaged in a dramatic struggle to provide for refugees forced to leave their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo.

Aid to the Church in Need reports that some 40,000 Angolans have been expelled from the Congo over the past few weeks as an “act of revenge” for Angola’s expulsion of Congolese refugees.

The US will soon be retiring their space shuttles to replace them with a new vehicle, scheduled for 2013. Until then, the Americans will be riding on Russian Soyuz capsules. But the Soyuz itself, a 40 year old technology with many modernizations, is on its way out, to be replaced with bigger better platforms.

The replacement for the will be the Kliper, a ship carrying 6 crew and a half ton of cargo. It is scheduled to fly its maiden voyage some time in 2010. The ship is about twice the size of the Soyuz and will require much larger rockets, most likely the Zenit class of booster rockets, in order to make orbit. It will return to earth by extending wings and gliding down, for a soft landing.

Interestingly enough, if things go according to plant, the new, larger Kliper, will actually save money. The present Soyuz missions run between $20 to $30 million each (compared to the American space shuttles at around $300 million each). Kliper flights are supposed to move more equipment and people for less money, but even it the costs stay the same, with more room on the ship, there will be room for more space tourists and at $20 million per pop, the ships will earn a profit, with just one added passenger.

Development of the Kliper is also priced at the low cost of $1 billion, compare that to the $10 billion for the American Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV), which is still on the drawing board.

But the Kliper is only the first modern step in a new plan by the Russian space agency to conquer the inner sphere of our solar system. Next on the development board is a manned spacecraft powered by a nuclear electric engine. For decades, Russia and the Soviet Union have developed nuclear powered satellites, which did not have to rely upon easily damaged solar arrays, for power. Of course those put out only kilowatts of power, while this ships engines will have to run on the megawatt range.

The ship’s design is scheduled to be complete by 2012 and a finished by 2021, at an estimated cost of 17 billion rubles, or $580 million. More realistic estimates put the price tag at $1 to $1.5 billion, over the next decade.

2. Wie ein Horoskop gelesen wird

Sie brauchen deshalb nicht verwundert zu sein, wenn Teile der Computer-Horoskop-Deutung einander widersprechen. Dies ergibt sich daraus, daß verschiedene Lebensumstände betroffen sind. Eine Person kann beispielsweise gleichzeitig sparsam in einer Richtung sein, als auch großzügig in anderer Hinsicht. Achten Sie, daher unbedingt auf die Beschreibung des jeweiligen Hauses.

Aspektwirkung (*****)

Bei der Beurteilung, welche Stärken und Schwächen überwiegen, sollen Ihnen die Sternchen (*) behilflich sein. Hinter den Aspekten finden Sie, immer ein bis fünf Sterne. 3. Aspekte

Der Begriff “Aspekt” bezieht sich auf die geometrischen Winkel-Verhältnisse zwischen den Planeten. Diese Beziehungen beruhen darauf, daß bei bestimmten Winkelabständen von Planeten eine gegenseitige Einwirkung besteht. Diese Winkelabstände (0°, 45°, 120° usw.) heißen Aspekte. Aspekte können sich gegenseitig stärken oder auch schwächen. In unserer

Geburtszeit

Um ein persönliches Horoskop zu berechnen, wird die genaue Geburtszeit und -minute benötigt. Ein Zeitunterschied von zehn Minuten kann bereits die Deutung des Charakters und des Schicksals eines Menschen verändern.

Häuser.

Das Himmelsgewölbe wird in zwölf Häuser (12 Tierkreiszeichen) eingeteilt, von denen sechs über und sechs unter dem Horizont liegen. Sie werden in Relation zum Geburtsort festgelegt und ermöglichen eine genaue Interpretation der allgemeinen Einflüsse der Gestirne und des Tierkreises. Jedes Haus ist für einen bestimmten Lebensbereich oder ein Erlebnisgebiet verantwortlich. Die Deutung wird durch die Planeten, die in den jeweiligen Häusern stehen, sowie deren geometrische Stellung untereinander vorgenommen (siehe auch “Aspekte”).

4. AC – Aszendent

Das erste “Haus” im Horoskop entspricht jener Himmelsregion, die auch Aszendent genannt wird und direkt unter dem östlichen Horizont liegt. Der Punkt des Aszendenten ist der genaue Schnittpunkt der Ekliptik mit diesem Horizont. Ekliptik nennt man den Weg, den die Sonne scheinbar am Himmelsgewölbe bei ihrem jährlichen Umlauf zurücklegt. Der Aszendent gilt als einflußreichste Stelle im Horoskop.

MC – Medium coeli

Der MC kennzeichnet die Himmelsmitte (Zenit).

Transite – Gezeiten des Schicksals

Das Geburtshoroskop zeigt den Sternhimmel zum Zeitpunkt der Geburt. Die Planeten wandern aber am Himmel mit verschiedener Geschwindigkeit weiter. Irgendwann einmal trifft also ein am Himmel wandernder Planet auf einen Punkt im Tierkreis (siehe Zodiak), an dem zur Zeit Ihrer Geburt, ein Planet stand. Diese Konjunktion nennt man einen Transit (vom

lateinischen transitare – vorübergehen, durchlaufen). Aus der Beobachtung dieser Transite kann man Prognosen/ Vorhersagen erstellen.

GMT – Greenwich-Mean-Time

Weltzeit. Die Geburtszeit (Ortszeit) wird auf die Weltzeit umgerechnet und einer damit in der ganzen Welt gleichen Zeitskala zugrunde gelegt.

Die Texte für das Geburtshoroskop sind in den Jahren 1979 und 1980 durch Herrn Dr. Eberhard Walker kreiert worden. Im Jahre 1987 ist Dr. Walker verstorben. Ataque de Tetyukhin, do Zenit, para nas mãos do central Sala, que fez nada menos do que sete pontos de bloqueio na vitória do Trentino por 3 a 2

Trentino e Zenit Kazan chegaram ao Mundial masculino de clubes como principais candidatos ao título da competição disputada em Doha. E nesta quarta-feira, logo pela segunda rodada do torneio, as duas equipes já se enfrentaram e mostraram por que são os dois grandes times do mundo na atualidade. Melhor para os italianos, que venceram de virada por 3 sets a 2, parciais de 24-26, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19 e 15-11, em pouco mais de 2h de jogo.

Tal como na vitória sobre o Zamalek, na terça-feira, o oposto Leandro Vissotto foi um dos destaques da partida. O brasileiro fez estrago na defesa russa e marcou 23 pontos, sendo segundo o maior pontuador do confronto atrás apenas do parceiro Kaziyski, que fez 24. O cubano Juantorena também deu conta do recado e teve 17 acertos.

Mas apesar da artilharia pesada de seu trio principal de atacantes, o Trentino garantiu a vitória graças à performance destacada de seu bloqueio. No total, foram nada menos do que 20 pontos neste fundamento, contra apenas 10 do Zenit. Só o central Andrea Sala fez sete pontos de bloqueio, e o ‘baixinho’ levantador brasileiro Rapha também conseguiu três ‘muros’ perfeitos.

Sem a eficiência do Trentino no bloqueio, o Zenit depositou todas as suas esperanças nos ataques de Alexey Cheremisin, que entrou no lugar do norte-americano Stanley ainda no segundo set e não saiu mais, e de Maxim Panteleymonenko. Mas os 22 e 20 pontos dos jogadores, respectivamente, tal como as bolas de segunda do veterano levantador Lloy Ball, não foram suficientes para evitar a derrota russa.

No outro jogo do Grupo A, o Zamalek conseguiu sua primeira vitória ao triunfar em uma difícil batalha contra o Plataneros de Corozal. Os portorriquenhos saíram na frente, mas os egípcios empataram a partida e venceram o longo tie-break, fechando o jogo de virada com 3 sets a 2, parciais de 23-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-14 e 21-19.

O maior pontuador da partida foi Mohamed Badawy, do Zamalek, com 31 pontos, seguido por Victor Rivera, do Corozal, com 30 acertos.

Com os resultados desta quarta-feira, o Trentino assumiu a liderança isolada da chave, com quatro pontos, e assegurou vaga nas semifinais por antecipação. Enquanto isso, o Corozal já está eliminado. Amanhã, Zenit e Zamalek se enfrentam para definir quem ficará com a segunda classificação do grupo.

Tin minte, ca acum cativa ani imi imprumutase Edi aparatul lui de fotografiat, primit la randul lui, de la cineva.  Parea o bijuterie de aparat. De fapt, mai mult o jucarioara de aparat. Primul SLR electronic, pe care puneam degetele. Degete care nu stiau sa il porneasca. Radeam amandoi pentru ca erau moarte bateriile.

Era un SLR Canon. Canon Rebel K2. Era in voga, cu renume, nu se gaseau pe toate gardurile, iar pretul lor era destul de mare. Imi placea si cum suna denumirea lui, parca il facea mai deosebit, iar K2, firma de echipamente pentru sport extrem. Degentele s-au lipit bine de el, aproape 2 ani, chiar daca il bateam pe Edi la cap sa il dau inapoi. Mi-a fost drag aparatul. Il purtam cu mine mai tot timpul.

Uitasem de Zenit pentru moment. La vremea aceea avea o problema la mecanismul de derulare si rupea filmul, problema care o mai are si acum, de altfel, desi l-am dus in Cluj, la batranelul vestit sa il repare. Mi-a spus ca nu are nici o problema.

Primisem cadou de la cineva apropiat, de Craciun, un film Tura, facut in Germania, alb-negru, cu 36 de expuneri, proces C-41. De abia se mai gaseau prin oras, desi nu prea cumpara lumea filme decat foarte rar.  Imi aduc aminte ce scria pe cutia respectiva, pe care inca o mai am.  “Pentru ca nu trebuie sa renuntam la ceea ce visam”. Ironia sortii a fost ca Zenitul a distrus filmul si am putut recupera vreo 3-4 cadre. Eram destul de suparat, iar Edi a cazut la fix cu aparatul.

Prietenia cu Canon EOS Rebel K2  s-a dezlantuit foarte repede. Dupa o luna si ceva de cautari si promisiuni am luat bateriile necesare sa-l pornesc. Daca-mi aduc bine aminte erau  CR-2, 3V. Gasisem si butonul de pornire intre timp. Aparatul era usor, zgomotos cand focaliza si dupa fiecare cadru aparatul nu mai putea focaliza, parca ramanea fara alimentare. Avea o problema des intalnita la aparatele pe film Canon, ceea ce am aflat mult mai tarziu. Ma rog, dupa fiecare cadru apasam butonul de focalizare si isi revenea, uneori necesita doar o repornire, spre bucuria mea. Mai aveam si doua filtre pe 58mm, unul galben si unul rosu, Quantaray.

Nu cunosteam prea multa lume care avea placerea sa fotografieze. Si in special pe film. Cumparam filme Kodak (C41) si Agfa APX (manual), in special asa 400, desi Kodak CN 400 avea un grain mai mult, se developa fara bataie de cap si se gasea mult mai usor, desi era mai scump. Spun bataie de cap, pentru ca dupa doua experiente neplacute cu Agfa, am renuntat sa mai cumpar. Le-am dus la developat la un chiosc kodak si mi-au spus ca “nu au iesit”. Si acum mai cred ca au incurcat filmele, developandu-le in proces automat, C41. Din pacate grainul filmelor Agfa il vazusem doar intamplator la cineva, in cateva fotografii, o parte de la bunicul meu.

Din joaca, din noroc, K2-ul a schimbat ceva in mine. Nu stiam daca in bine sau in rau, insa cu timpul am observat acele schimbari…Zenitul incetasem sa il folosesc datorita problemelor care le avea, bani de alt aparat mai bun nu aveam si nici nu stiam de unde sa imi cumpar.

A urmat o pauza lunga, de cativa ani…pana la primul meu DSLR.

En la jornada del sábado jugaron Anderlcht y Standard y ambos quedaron con un 2-0, pero uno a favor y el otro en contra. El Anderlcht ganó gracias a los tantos de Biglia y Lukaku en los minutos 24′ y 37′ derrotando al Charleroi. Mientras el Standard perdió 2-0 contra el Westerlo gracias a dos tantos de Dekelver en los minutos 24′ y 33′.

El domingo jugaron el Brugge ganando a domicilio 1-0 merced a un tanto en los instantes finales,-89′-, de Chavez contra el Gent que en el 91′ sufrió la expulsión de Maric por doble amonestación. El Mechelen ganó a domicilio remontando el gol del Genk obra de Tözser en el minuto 6 de penalti, antes del descanso pero Mununga empató (32′) y cuando se estaba acabando el encuentro, en el 88′ Dessel anotó el de la victoria.

Por la parte baja el Roeselare ha vuelto a perder y es colista con 6 puntos y una posición encima aunque con 10 unidades esta el Mouscron de Carboni y Juan Sanchéz que ganó por 2-1 al Sint-Truiden remontando el gol visitante obra de Odoi en el 19′. Los goleadores locales fueron Gijseghem en el 21′ y Okunwanne de penalti en el 63′.

El Rangers le ha arrebatado el primer lugar al Celtic tras remontarle al Saint Jonhstone un gol de Samuel en el 17′, con uno de Boyd en el 40′ y otro de Papac en el 83′. El Celtic empató a 0 en casa frente al Motherwell. El Hibernian se sitúa tercero al ganar por 1-0 al Kilmaanrock con un gol de Benjelloun en el 85′ de penalti.

Olympiacos ha empatado al frente de la clasificación con el Panathinaikos tras el tropiezo de este último. Los rojiblancos ganaron cómodamente al Asteras Tripolis por 3-0 con tantos de Mellbergh en el 36′, Mitroglou en el 53′ y Zairi en el 67′.

El trueno verde rascó un empate en campo del Kavala y remontando un 2-0 obra de Onwuachi en los minutos 21′ y 43′, en el 56′ Katsouranis acortó distancias y Cissé en el 91′ empató. El AEK, el otro gran deambula por la mitad de la tabla,- es octavo-, tras ganar con sufrimiento al Panthrakikos Komotini por 3-2 remontando el 0-1 inicial de Buval en el 26′, con goles de Majstorovic en el 28′, Djokic en propia puerta en el 39′ y Sccocco en el 59′. en el 67′ Robert acortó distancias. El Basilea ganó fácilmente en campo del Le Mont LS por 1-3 con tantos de Aratore en el 13′, Streller en el 19′ y Almerares en el 39′. Ebe en el 61′ hizo el de los locales. Acabó el invicto del Fenerbahce de Daum que igualmente sigue líder con 2 puntos sobre el Galatasaray. Los canarios perdieron por 2-1 contra el Gaziantepspor que remontó un gol de Senturk en el 24′ con goles de Souza en el 84′ y 90′. El “Gala” por su parte ganó 4-3 al Trabzonspor con goles de Kewell y Cetin en los minutos 23′ y 37′ y Turan y Baros en el 69′ y 71′. Los visitantes descontaron con Cora en el 44′ y Colman en los minutos 55′ y 86′. El Besiktas, el campeón es séptimo a 9 puntos, tras vencer al Kasimpasa por 2-1 con goles de Nihat en el 9 y Bobo en el 38′, los visitantes descontaron por mediación de Moritz en el 89′ de penalti. El Rubin Kazan sigue líder con un punto de ventaja sobre el Spartak tras ganar 2-1 al Khimki con goles de Karadeniz en el 31′ y Kasaev en el 55′. Antipenko acortó en el 88′. El Spartak le endosó un 3-0 al Lokomotiv en uno de los derbis de Moscú dónde marcaron Ananidze en el 40′, Welliton en el 62′ y Owusu-Abeyie en el 84′. El Zenit es tercero a cuatro unidades tras ganar en el campo del Kuban Krasnodar con goles de Rosina en el 26′ y de Bistrov en el 49′. … or more like I had a dream. Last night I was involved in some action full of anticipation. In my dreams that is.

After missing a plane (an experience I’ve experienced more in reality than in dreams) to Riga (why?must ponder over its importance to my existence), I decided to change direction and go way way West. Destination:  United States of America and a small suburban town which, after awakening, let its name slip through my mind. But it must have been something exotic and warm, because before long I was packing my suitcases with summer garments and planning trips over the yet undiscovered lands in pleasant sunshine. The price appeared to be of no concern, blessed be dreamland. The reality of my dream was stretched even more as I the two hours before the flight seemed to last forever (I found myself sharing advent calendars with my cousins, who seemed to have multiplied), as I discovered and rediscovered myself packing in most unexpected places. As my alarm carried off its duty, my dream was abruptly dragged away. Needless to say, I was forced, no – pleasantly invited, to re-grasp the thread of dreams and follow my path over the big

waters into the US and A. What happened next can be summarized and fitted into the plane a vast plane of mustard/blue colored seats, irritating dimness and constant buzzing of fellow passengers. I never felt the joy and excitement of finally taking flight or seeing the distant land drawing closer and closer.  As I woke up, I tried to recreate the feeling, fall back into a state of unconscious consciousness and prolong my impulsive adventure. The shallow disappointment haunted me for the rest of the day, taking its toll on lectures, but promising that this is not the end!

i have 4 cameras. 4 of which i cherish and am proud of. 3 of which are usable. 2 of which max and i took out for a spin on a sunny saturday afternoon. 1 of which is a mystery to be yet uncovered.

Saturday afternoon proved, once more, that I have chosen the right place to inhabit. Every bit of the Brighton seafront seemed to be screaming comfort and welcoming. And after a long time I felt so at home. Regardless of the chilly fall breeze that kept shoving my hair in my mouth. And the Belgian waffle with caramel that is so foreign to me, though it found my stomach just fine (after taking a few detours down ‘my coat’ lane). Max and I took my Zenit and Panorama cameras out. I’ve realized long ago, that to in order to be satisfied with my Zenit photography I only need to look through the lens and push the button. Don’t need to birdie, don’t need the negatives or the positives. Just looking through the viewfinder is a good enough reward for me, for it is a whole different world, framed just the way I want. And just old enough to make me feel experienced. Even starlings appeared to be just a little tamed to pose for the camera. (Note to self: photography as a media connecting people: after being asked to take a photo of a couple behind a ‘just married’ banner, I discovered that the man had Lithuanian parents and a ‘labas’ from his lips felt very homely. Who new?) Everything looks good through a lens. I really wanted to finish both of the rolls of film, so I could get them developed as soon as possible. Still have a couple special pictures to take. Oh, and the Brighton Pavilion! The randomest, most surprising and yet so determined to fit building I’ve ever seen. Amongst the other British style buildings flourishes a less glamourous and smaller version of the Taj Mahal. A pleasure palace. I will probably never stop being surprised at every sight of it. Ah,  I really do love Brighton…

A FIFA sorteou hoje os confrontos da repescagem européia das eliminatórias para a Copa do Mundo de 2010, na África do Sul.

O equlíbrio deve dar a tônica destes enfrentamentos que decidem os últimos 4 europeus no Mundial da África.

A única superioridade incontestável é dos franceses sobre os irlandeses. Mas o estilo antagônico das duas seleções pode gerar muita dificuldade para os Les Blues.

Pra quem pensa que Portugal pegou uma molezinha sugiro que acompanhem os jogos da Bundesliga. A seleção bósnia conta com diversos bons jogadores como os meias Pjanic (Lyon), Salihovic (Hoffenheim) e Misimovic - atual campeão alemão pelo Wolfsburg. Sem falar na poderosa dupla de ataque formada pelo inseparável parceiro de Grafite no Wolfsburg, Edin Dzeko (vice artilheiro da Bundesliga na temporada passada e atual vice artilheiro das eliminatórias européias) e o letal Vedad Ibisevic que jogando pelo promovido Hoffenheim fez 19 gols só no primeiro turno – 17 jogos – do campeonato alemão da última temporada.

Grécia e Ucrânia é um confronto de seleções muito parecidas. Os gregos têm um esquema bem defensivo e no ataque apostam tudo na velocidade de Gekas (Larissa) – artilheiro da zona européia de classificação pra Copa – e nas bolas paradas de Karagounis (Panathinaikos). Os ucranianos também têm um esquema que prima pelo sistema defensivo e as ações ofensivas são concentradas na dupla do Dynamo de Kiev, Shevchenko e Milevskiy.

Já no confronto entre os ex soviéticos e os ex iugoslavos, vejo um leve favoritismo para os russos que possuem mais jogadores talentosos como Arshavin (Arsenal), Zhirkov (Chelsea), Bystrov (Zenit) e o jovem Dzagoev (CSKA Moscou), além do excelente goleiro Akinfeev (CSKA Moscou), pretendido por alguns dos grandes clubes europeus como Manchester United, Milan e Bayern de Munique. Mas os russos que se cuidem, a Eslovênia - mesmo sem nenhum grande craque – tem um time arrumadinho que sabe se defender bem e sai muito rápido nos contra ataques.

Según recogió Zenit, al intervenir en la 64ª sesión de la Asamblea General ante el Tercer Comité sobre el item 105, “Control internacional de las drogas”, monseñor Migliore dijo que muchas causas y consecuencias de la dependencia de las sustancias psicotrópicas están relacionadas con las dinámicas familiares. En este sentido, comentó que “la prevención, el cuidado, la rehabilitación y los esfuerzos se deberían concentrar en las relaciones familiares en sus dimensiones biológicas, psicológicas, sociales, culturales y económicas”. También, se refirió al debilitamiento de la familia con el abuso de las drogas y reiteró que la familia es la base de la sociedad. Si se daña, se daña también el tejido social de la comunidad y contribuyendo incluso a la desestabilización de la sociedad. En su discurso, el representante de la Santa Sede subrayó que el abuso de las drogas “sigue impidiendo la capacidad de los individuos, de las comunidades, de las Naciones, de alcanzad el desarrollo económico, político y social” y advirtió que “afecta a individuos de todo estatus socio-económico”, representando “una fuente de evasión financiera, emocional y psicológica con efectos devastadores sobre las personas y sobre sus familias”. Por este motivo, la “concuerda decididamente en el hecho de que la salud global del individuo esté en el centro del control del consumo de drogas, y que como sociedad se deben defender la salud y la dignidad de las personas evitando el uso de drogas y aliviando el sufrimiento de los toxicómanos a través de la curación”. Afrontar las necesidades sanitarias de los individuos, explicó, será sin embargo insuficiente si no se consigue también hacer frente a los “diversos factores que llevan a la producción y al consumo de drogas”. Con este propósito, el Observador Permanente recordó cómo los países en vías de desarrollo y las personas afligidas por la pobreza son “particularmente vulnerables a los efectos devastadores del tráfico de drogas, porque son puntos estratégicos para el tráfico o cultivadores con buen mercado”. En estos países, subrayó, se están realizando de varias formas programas de desarrollo que proporcionan a las familias campesinas “alternativas reales a los cultivos de amapolas y de coca, que causan destrucción y derramamiento de sangre”. Estos programas, declaró el representante vaticano, “deben seguir siendo apoyados a nivel nacional, regional e internacional”, así como deberían realizarse “mayores esfuerzos para subrayar el nexo causa-efecto entre el creciente desarrollo y la erradicación del tráfico de droga”. La delegación vaticana recordó también “con particular preocupación” los vínculos “cada vez más obvios” entre el tráfico de droga “y otras tragedias humanas como el tráfico de seres humanos, la proliferación de armas de pequeño calibre, el crimen organizado y el terrorismo”. Estos elementos, señaló, “muestran que el abuso de sustancias no es una transgresión sin víctimas, sino que tiene un impacto devastador y de amplio calado en toda la comunidad”, y quienes sufren las consecuencias “son especialmente los pobres y los vulnerables”. “Los individuos que caen presa del uso y abuso de drogas necesitan apoyo y asistencia por parte de los miembros de su familia, de la comunidad y de la sociedad”, concluyó. “Cuantos han combatido y vencido la aflicción del abuso de drogas son modelos verdaderamente positivos y, siendo ‘embajadores de esperanza’ pueden tener una influencia importante en la vida de los demás”.
