it *i mean this post* might be helpful for you, cuz HP corp is soooo agressive and cruel and made sooooo suberb and soooo ultranew laptop which is sooo thin that almost ALL linux developers forgot that it exists and it newer hardware also needs support…

OK we got no CDrom, we got USB’s and make them bootable with help of this tool

SOME links:
laptop

dv2 series review

something interesting about older model but useless for me

Things I / we tested *we = me and Pavel*

Fedora 11 – livecd works ok (ok means RUNS, but has no wifi), when trying to install crashes on partitioning. Same things with Fedora dvd and beta releace ver 12 livecd & dvd. But: once somehow I installed version 11 on my poor entire drive, and even updated to 12, but had no wifi, replaced kernel and lost my ati driver and had awful troubles with ATI graphics. But no way when partitioning and leaving space to other opsystems, have no ideas what to do. Tried to ask for help @fedoraforums, got no useless stuff. my post at FF

Other RedHats i tried are CentOs and some strange enterprise linux version 5 o_O (the last one was so evil : it tried to erase all my hard drive’s data – windows 7 and two installed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games)

Then things went somekinda Debianistically,..
Tried crunchbang linux, it worked as it is, out of the box, BUT audio worked only with headphones, OK… forgot to mention: hibernate and sleep functions made him sleep forever, never was able to resume

Fail: linux mint fluxbox edition wasn’t even able to boot… (but booted ok on my second computer)
Other installations that failed:
zenwalk (mini slackware)

Ubuntu’s
Ubuntu server editions 9.10 (karmics) were not able to boot cuz of wrong boot device (i had no idea to tell them that i install from usb and have no cd/dvd drive, so we didn’t understood each other, stupid i, stupid them)
We were so tired that decided to installUbuntu karmic koala one week ago it didn’t supported newer broadcom (ok i used ndiswrapper but this is annoying – enabling hardware drivers each time i log into my system). Strange that some users were saying it does not boot at all … but today… WE GOT THIS!!”

PWNED. so it worked perfectly… runs perfectly.. SINCE TODAY. and even sound works out of the box! Strange : crunchbang is ubuntu based but has no speaker sound..

OK, GL and HF, have lot of things to do on my brand fresh karmic laptop, thanks to Ubuntu developers…
PS windows 7 works perfectly out of the box, if you want to know

Şu an hangi projelerde çalışıyorsunuz?

Her iki versiyonda kararlı sürümdü.

Zenwalk Slackware’e göre genellikle daha yeni versiyonlu yazılımlara sahip; ancak zaman zaman Slackware yetişiyor.Gelecekte yalnızca Slackware’ın sağlamadığı önemli özellikleri tutacağız, zaman harcamaya değmeyecekleri bırakacağız. Devam edeceklerimiz;

* İyileştirilmiş çekirdek

* İyileştirilmiş init scriptleri

* Masaüstü ve grafiksel araçlar

* Dikkatlice seçilmiş uygulamalar (Görev başına 1)

* Yönetim araçları ve paket yöneticisi.

A good news for all SLAMPP users around the world, soon or perhaps to be exactly, someday next week,

A good news for all SLAMPP users around the world, soon or perhaps to be exactly, someday next week, we will release another new maintenance release of SLAMPP 2.0 (Kalinda), 2.0.2. In this release we have fixed several issues found in the previous ones, provide more documentation and How To, and some other interesting features. What makes this release so interesting is that the whole development process of this release has been done by a special SLAMPP fan who now becomes my co-developer and maintainer.

You might be wondering who this guy is anyway. His name is Clinton Tinsley and you can read his short profile here. He also was the one who presented SLAMPP at UTOSC 2009. It feels great that I finally have someone else onboard. Welcome Clint! For the rest, I guess, I will leave it to Clint. He will provide more details about the release soon.

Another exciting news coming recently, Thomas, a Linux Editor of Datormagazin, a Swedish computer magazine, has let me know that he had written an article about SLAMPP on October 2009 edition of that magazine. So, if you live in the nearby area of Swedia, please consider to get that magazine. Thanks Thomas for your great support.

Alright guys, that will be all short news from my side. I hope we could deliver SLAMPP 2.0.2 soon to you. Have a good weekend!

Thank you.

He is going to host a Linux Home Server BoF at Utah Open Source Conference 2009 on October 8, 2009, at Miller Campus of the Salt Lake Community College, Sandy, Utah. He will demonstrate SLAMPP 2.0.1 to get the conversation started. It is surely a good news for me and I really appreciate Clint’s work there. Sadly, I can not attend that event in person due to my personal situation right now. I hope Clint’s BoF will be running well and people could take something useful from there. Wish you good luck, friend!

Due to some bugs and glitches found in the previous release of SLAMPP 2.0, today I have released a maintenance version of SLAMPP.

What has been done in this release?

As it is a maintenance release, no major changes have been made. The system is kept intact.

Fixed bugs and glitches found in the ZenInstaller, LiveClone, Lilofix, Gparted, and some rc.* files.

Upgraded some desktop and server applications to the latest Slackware 12.2/current and Zenwalk snapshot repositories.

Reorganized the boot process display. Now, the Yes/No answer of Use Proprietary Softwares information has been eliminated. Proprietary softwares have been installed permanently to enhance use experience. Further utilized rc.postinstall to detect and autoconfigure the X server on the fly. A downside part of these changes is that, it takes some time to complete the whole boot process until user reaches the graphical login manager. However, I am going to improve this in the next major release.

OK guys, without any delay, please visit the SLAMPP website and download SLAMPP 2.0.1 now from mirror servers available over there.

Regarding this release, I would like to express my sincere acknowledgment and thanks to Clinton Tinsley of Boise Linux User Group for his priceless support during the maintenance. I look forward to working with him on this going forward.

May you have any concern, please let me know. Thank you for using SLAMPP.

Have a nice weekend!

Actually I already got this good news two weeks ago from Hans-Jorg, the product manager of that magazine. But, just to be in the safe side, I have postponed the announcement until today.

Of course it becomes a great honor to me that people at Linux Magazine have shown their interest and appreciation on SLAMPP. It is surely something that I never imagine before that this project will be on the cover DVD of such popular Linux magazine in the world. Even they also helped me in creating a new variant for SLAMPP’s logo (Thanks to Judith Erb at Linux New Media AG). Having said that, I am pIanning to incorporate the new logo in the next release of SLAMPP. We will see how it goes. WOW! It feels so good, dude!

Once again, thanks so much, Linux Magazine. Your support to SLAMPP is priceless.

Below you can download some information about the release. I have taken them directly from Linux Magazine.

$ su -

# netpkg nano

# nano /etc/netpkg.conf

# VLC 1.0.1 Goldeneye repository

$ ps U username | grep [i]ceweasel

$ kill -KILL ID

где ID – идентификатор процесса /usr/lib/iceweasel/iceweasel-bin.

Zenwalk has always had the reputation as being a distro for the more seasoned Linux user, with the release of Zenwalk 6 Gnome, has this changed? Has this Slackware based distro taken the route of Ubuntu? Short answer – not really, but then why should it?

Dont expect an Ubuntu or Fedora style installation process, who needs that anyway?

Installation

If you are expecting an Ubuntu type experience here forget it and anyone with a phobia of the command line will panic the second they boot the ISO (although all that is needed is a harmless return key press) That being said the basic menu system does offer the feature of automatic install, which is great for those who just want to dedicate their entire harddisk to Zenwalk and don’t want to “fiddle”

The ISO itself is around the 680meg mark, so it wont take long to download and there are plenty of available options for the source of the download.

The installation was smooth, taking around 10 minutes to complete and during this time most console messages are hidden (maybe to avoid the blind panic of some users when met with a comment they cannot comprehend)

Transparent console window! This is not the default Zenwalk Wallpaper, but it is lovely...

Software

Lets start with some basics. Zenwalk 6 is running off Linux Kernel 2.6.28.7 and using Gnome 2.26.0 DE. This immediately creates some nice features, the first one is that Zenwalk is quick on the bootup and the second is that you are up to date with Gnome DE. The default file system is XFS.

Netpkg handles your software requirements here and the GUI makes it very simple to search for the packages/files that you require. A nice feature of Netpkg is that it allows you to find Orphan files and remove them.

Iceweasel is the pre-packaged browser here (3.0.8) and Icedove for your mail requirements. Python is running 2.6.2 and other packages of note include: Transmission 1.51 (now currently at 1.73) and Openoffice 3.0. Pidgin is included as part of the default installation and thank fully there is no duplication.

There is out of the box compatibility for BBCI Player and most of your media requirements, which is one less job to think of – although you will need libdvdcss to enable the playback of encrypted DVD disks.

It is also worth noting that you will have to install proprietary graphics drivers yourself (unlike Ubuntu which automates the process) this will involve you getting your hands dirty with the command line.

Conclusions

I get tired of giving the “great distro” badge out, but here is another distro that has performed exactly how I expected. Whilst some users will say that a weakness of Linux is the amount of distro’s, I see that as a strength, afterall you can run the latest Firefox release on Zenwalk, Mepis, Ubuntu, Wolvix etc etc. I look at Linux like petrol, there may be different brands but they all make your car move. Linux is in a good position IMO, because unlike Windows where one size has to pretty much fit all, with Linux you can have a distro aimed solely at the advanced user or soley at the new one. I would suggest Zenwalk is more towards the former rather than the latter, but having said that its hardly difficult to follow some online tutorials if you are unsure.

Pidgin for me is a bad choice. How many people still use ICQ? and for me the others (with the exception of IRC) have no worth. I don’t like the IRC support of Pidgin and always favor the IRSSI or the X-chat route.

I am pleased to see there is no major duplication in the pre-installed packages and Zenwalk really has (IMO) taken time to consider the apps included.

I would like to see future versions of Zenwalk moving away from Iceweasel and/or Firefox. I personally have seen (on my hardware) how slugish Firefox and derivatives can be compared to Chromium which whilst still in beta is leaping in front of Firefox in terms of execution, rendering and even the simple Java input box. Since Zenwalk seems to pride itself on being fast and bloat free, a new direction in browsers may echo that ethos (IMO).

Theres no silly games that you will play only once out of curiousity, although as default, Zenwalk was VERY guilty of defaulting to “one click executing” which causes for an oldtimer like myself who is used to clicking once for focus, twice for execution alot of heart ache. I just cannot get used to the “hover focus” so that was one of the first things that had to be changed. I’ve noticed in the past many KDE distro’s are defaulted to this. Am I behind the times? or simply stuck in my ways?

Conversely a nice feature was that as default the terminal has a transparent backdrop (which is one of my few vices in relation to screen visual effects)

Zenwalk is fast, stable and well supported. From what I’ve seen of the Zenwalk community it appears friendly and helpful.

Zenwalk isn’t going to hold your hand in the way Ubuntu does, but for those that take the time with it, will be rewarded with yet another snappy distro that doesn’t see asthetics and hand holding as a priority over performance. As with all distro’s it will be unlikely that you find one that exactly meets your requirements and a little fiddling/fine tuning is always required.

So how does it compare with my distro of choice (Wolvix)? Very well, although on my hardware Wolvix Wine performance is better than Zenwalk as is many of the emulation projects I am running. The memory footprint for running Zenwalk and a few basic operations was a respectable 120mb…very impressive, infact even running a rather large document in OO didn’t take it much above 150mb. Compare that to Ubuntu which has a footprint in similar conditions of 255mb.

A great distro and one of many that offers a tight and stable experience. It is also available as a live CD. Visit the homepage: http://www.zenwalk.org/ for download options!

I will still be sticking with my beloved Wolvix though!

That long awaited moment has come. Today I am glad to let you know that SLAMPP 2.0 is available for public download. There are a lot of enhancements in this new release. Some of them are the following:

- Using the Linux live kernel 2.6.28.7
- Code-named “KALINDA” and now DVD based
- Provides pre-configured servers and related utilities to ease your work in setting up an instant home server
- Provides full Web and Linux development environment: LAMPP and Ruby on Rails, IDEs, Frameworks, Compilers, Interpreters, Utilities, etc
- Equips with fancy bootsplash and progress bar, nice desktop wallpaper, complete Open Office suite/multimedia/graphics/audio video applications and many more
- Maintains the SLAX modularity. You can easily add new modules to SLAMPP.
- Can be installed on hard disk or USB
- Supports persistent partitions on USB
- Can do a live cloning of running system
- Supports .txz and .tlz packages (Slackware current package format)
- Easy to update and upgrade all packages to Zenwalk and Slackware repositories with Netpkg, slapt-get/gslapt, zpm/Zendo package management tools
- Last but not least, there are many interesting features left to be explored by yourself.

I also setup a new homepage to replace the old one, to indicate the new direction of SLAMPP. SLAMPP strives now for a good balance and combination between desktop and server. That is the reason why I mixed the command line and graphical applications onto one medium. I hope this new direction is not going to confuse you.

Alright guys, I am not going to bore you with this announcement. Just visit SLAMPP at its new homepage over here, http://slampp.abangadek.com/info/ and grab your copy.

Please download SLAMPP 2.0 aka Kalinda (1.9 GB) here.

I would like to thank Slackware and Zenwalk development team, Tomas M. for Linux Live scripts, Romi Satria Wahono and all people of Brainmatics for their support in providing the development area and facilities and their companion during long development, Aminudin for uploading the huge iso file to the server, Luri Darmawan for his ideas and suggestions and last but not least, Harry Sufehmi for letting me use his server to serve the SLAMPP website and repository.

Furthermore, I specially dedicate this release to my beloved spouse and daughter. Thank you for your patience and love.

Have fun using SLAMPP, folks!
