El Zeppelin, el bicho que sale en casi todas las peliculas de nazis, el que fue una revolución en su dia. Tengo entendido que hasta cruzó el Atlántico desde Alemania a New York. Increíble. Ahora podemos ver y entender mas de cerca como funciona la operación normal de uno de ellos.

Además, gracias a Airship Ventures, te permite pilotar el único que hay en EE.UU., con un instructor a tu derecha, que te dejará nada mas ni nada menos que realizar un par de tomas y despegues y unos virajes standard. Lo único que necesita es la licencia de privado, el reconocimiento medico clase 3 y un buen fajo de dólares, unos 3000 para ser preciso. Ya sabéis, cualquier visita a California, cerca de San Francisco (Moffet Field), no perdáis la ocasión de poder apuntaros en el Logbook, unas horitas en un Zeppelin.

I was feeling a bit Zep yesterday, so I did this. I think maybe the guitars a bit too loud.

The consistently interesting magazine “American Scientist” has a good article this month on energy issues and transportation, “The Other Climate Threat” by Andreas Schäfer, Henry D. Jacoby, John B. Heywood, and Ian A. Waitz. It’s behind a pay wall, unfortunately, but can be found at better newstands.  A more technical version of it is also at the National Academy of Engineering site, here.

They note that all over the world people appear to spend about 1.0 to 1.5 hours a day traveling, no matter what the societal level.  In African villages that’s how far people walk, and in more mechanized places it’s how they much time they spend on the train or in the car.   The upper limit makes sense – much more than that and you don’t have time for anything else – but the lower limit is surprising.  Maybe it’s like the radius of your hunting ground; too small and you’ll be missing the big game.  If you’re not traveling that much, you’re missing a better job.

Likewise, transportation occupies a fairly narrow band of GDP, from 5% at the bottom to 12% at the top, which makes sense for the same reason.  However, the range in GDP and technology means that there are enormous differences in the total amount traveled per year, from 200 to 300 km per person  per year in South Asia, to 15 thousand km/p/yr in North America.   The world average is 5500 km/p/yr.   Distance traveled appears to correlate to GDP within about a factor of 2.  The richer you are, the farther you go.  You’re not just hunting the local rabbits, you’re after more valuable but rarer game like elephants.

Since routine supersonic or rocket travel appears impractical, the limit would be 1.2 hours/day in jet aircraft, or 900 km/day and 300K km/year.   That’s not out of the question – some people commute between Washington and New York, and that’s 650 km per day.   That would correspond to a GDP or $300K per capita, which is also conceivable.  The upcoming George Clooney movie “Up In the Air”, is about just such a person, although his situation is portrayed as comically tragic.

Where do I personally fit into this chart?  My commute is about 40 km round-trip, which is on the low side of people I work with.  I drive about 20,000 km per year, so the commute is only 50% of that.  That’s kind of surprising – I would have thought that most of my car’s miles would be in the commute.  I’ve flown about 50,000 km this year, with 3 trips to from the US east to west coasts, and one to Japan.  That puts me at 5X the average distance for an American, but my income is also in that range.

Anyway, what all this means is that as the entire world becomes richer, everyone is going to travel more, and thus emit more CO2.   The desire to travel seems pretty basic.   It’s not something amenable to exhortation to change lifestyle.   It’s going to be critical to shift to the most efficient mode in terms of grams CO2 per km.   Europe is now aiming for car efficiencies of < 100 gm/km (62 miles/gallon).   Planes are not that great, about 20 to 30 mpg, counting that fact that emissions at high altitudes are about 2X worse than those at ground level in terms of global warming.   Trains are best, at 40 to 80 mpg, particularly since electrified trains can get their power from low-carbon sources. Boeing and Airbus are going to have to improve efficiency and find low-carbon power sources if they want to stay in business.

So how can they do that?  Zeppelins!  Hydrogen-powered ones at that.    Over-pressure the gas bags (OK, keep it as a liquid in tanks) and use the extra for fuel.  Trans-Atlantic flights would refuel in Iceland from geothermal electricity.   Trans-Pacifics stop in Hawaii for the same reason.   Yellowstone would have mooring towers just outside the park boundaries.    Trans-American flights would stop at nuclear power parks located in South Dakota, far from human habitation.

I’m sure they’ll ignore this advice and go for something boring like algae-derived diesel, but a steampunk fan like me can dream.

Q:Why did you start your famous game, Zeppelin Battle?
A: well galleons was a big inspiration, when i went to galleons i didnt really play i just enjoyed watching the battle but i thought i might enjoy watching an air battle even more but in order to watch a dog fight you’ve got to keep the planes focused on a point otherwise they fly everywhere zeppleins allowed a fixed point of battle while still being a dogfight i specifically wanted my planes to shoot bullets cause rockets are too anachronistic for biplanes and i had never actually been to palce twehre the planes shoot bullets thought im certain im not the first that was my main inspiration well obiviously i was a big fan of flight simulator pc games, those are always fun

Q:Did you expect to become famous?
A: absolutly not, i went to bed one night with 30 visits on my place after 1 year of playing i woke up with my inbox full of people telling mme my game was broken and to fix it and 50k visits

A: at this time no, though i don’t rule out that i may donate in the future

A: at first my favorite thing was the freedom to build whatever you wanted  but i am slowly learning by trial and error

A blackened bottle of beer found in the wreck of the Hindenburg zeppelin is expected to fetch thousands of pounds at auction.

The bottle was found by a fire-fighter cleaning up the American airfield where the German airship exploded in 1937.

The bottle will be the most expensive ever bought if it meets its estimated price of £5,000 ($8,337) on Saturday.

The airship was engulfed by flames as it landed in New Jersey, killing 38 people and injuring 60.

Secret find

New Jersey firefighter Leroy Smith found six bottles of Lowenbrau beer and a pitcher intact on the scene of the crash.

He buried his secret find so he could collect them later, as the area had been sealed off by the authorities.

Mr Smith gave the other five bottles to his colleagues.

Most of the others are now lost, although one was given to the Lowenbrau company after the death of Mr Smith’s friend.

The silver-plated pitcher, which bears the logo of the Deutsche Zeppelin Reedrei, the zeppelin airline company, is expected to reach £12,000 ($20,000).

Eile toimusid siis Kadri vanaema matused. Alustame siis ilusti algusest.

9:35 sms – Tule maja taha – Kadri. Läksin siis maja taha, topiti bemmi võtmed kätte. Jaaah, see bemm oli alles masin.. Äkkilisus, see on hea sõna selle iseloomustamiseks. Maanteel lubati sõita 70-ga, Kadri lubas vanaisale ja emale aeglaselt sõita, ”libe” tee ja värki, ma sõitsin vahepeal kogemata 90-ga aga keskmine kiirus oli mingi 80 või nii. Asja tegi naljakaks see, et kui mõni auto meist möödus, näitas Kadri kahe käega keskmisi sõrmi, neid jõudsalt raputades muidugi, ülimalt naljakas vaatepilt. Vahepeal olime jõudnud juba linna ja siis kuulsin, et kusagilt on Kadri totakat naeru kuulda, st keegi helistas mulle, esimese asjana pakkusime, et Jan helistab ja voilaa, helistaski, Kadri helistas vastu ja seletas talle umbmääraselt kuidas Tartu bussikast Zeppelini jõuda. Jõudsime siis ARKi büroo ette, parkisin nibin-nabin auto ära ja triivasime büroosse (keegid tüübid parkisid oma bemmi meie kõrvale ja jõllitasid meid naerdes). Büroos võtsime järjekorranumbrid ja siis kuulsin jälle Kadri totakat naeru, seekord võtsin vastu ja seletasin Janile kuidagi kuidas Mäkist Zeppelini jõuda ;D. Kadri jõudis vahepeal paanikat tekitada, ta jättis koju oma selle tunnistuse värgenduse, siis me veel ei teadnud, et seda ei olnud vaja kaasa võtta. Juhiload saime alla 5 minuti kätte, kähku käis, lihtsalt kirjuta kuupäev siia ja allkiri sinaa ja ulatati kohe juhiluba kätte. Minuarust on mul see ainuke õnnestunud pilt üleüldse kusagil kaardi peal. Pilt on iseenesest must-valge (informatsioon neile kel POLE veel juhilube ;D). Kaardid kätte saanud, triivasime tagasi bemmi poole, otsustanud ära, et tagasiteel sõidab Kadri ja et meil autos on naiste võim, oli Jan sunnitud taha istuma. Naljakas on kellelegi kiruda ”Kiirenda, kiirenda !”. Enivei, Jani leidsime kiiresti Zeppelini ees üles, ta ostis omale uued kõrvaklapid ! Tegime väikese vahepeatuse Lõunakas, lilli matustele oli vaja. Tagasiteel Tartust – Puhja vaatasin, et mingi lahe bemm sõitis mööda, mõne aja pärast helistas emme, et kas need olime meie kes neile vastu tulid =D.

Matused algasid kirikus. (Ma ütlen kohe ära, et varem ma pole matustel käinud.) Kadri parkis oma bemmi kiriku ette, kusagile sopa sisse, et siis, kui  autost väljusid, siis ikka mõnusalt sopa sisse, *lirts*. Selle õnnestunud parkimiskoha pärast saime mõnusalt Jani vingumist kuulata, päris mitu korda. Kirikus panime oma lillekesed ümber kirstu (aitäh Jan lillekeste eest), kaas oli lahti.. Ausalt, see vaatepilt šokeeris mind, teda sellises… noh.. olukorras näha.. See, et ma ei kuule enam kunagi teda rääkimas, liikumas.. Silmad vesistusid.

Pst, vahepala. Ühte ma ikka ei suuda mõista.. Miks kirikutes nii k*radi külm peab olema ?! Jani teoreem – et me Jumala ees väriseksime. Ka võimalus…

See mida kirikuõpetaja, Tiit, rääkis oli hea, ta oli vahepeal isegi põdenud, et see ei tulnud tal hästi välja. Hea oli. Pärast sõitsime ”autorongiga” kalmistule, kirst asetati Juudaste perekonna juurde, sinnasamma, kus me Kadriga tol reedel olime ja vaatasime, et kas ta mahuks sinna.. Seal oli mul jällegi emotsionaalne olukord. Kohati tundus, et kalmistul oli veel külmem kui kirikus. Lõpuks ma ei tundnud oma jalgugi ja kindad loovutasin Kadrile… Niii külm oli, brr. Kolm ”peotäit” liiva. Ja siis vaatasime kuidas matustele tulnud mehed hakkasid labidatega kirstu peale liiva loopima. Mnjah, matustele tulnud mehed, külalised, -_- need tüübid, kes tegelikult pidid kirstule liiva peale loopima, olid saanud oma palga varem kätte ja sellepärast ei ilmunudki kohale, läksid hoopis kusagile end laua alla jooma.. -_- V*tupead, muud mul pole tõesti midagi öelda.

Pärast seda sõitsime sööklasse, kus oli õnneks küte sees, st soojenesime suht kiiresti üles.  Algul sõime Asta špežali – lihapirukad ja peale jõime puljongit. Siis aga läks õigeks söömiseks, kartulid, šnitslid, kotletid, kaste, tomativiilud, kurgiviilud, hapukapsas. Kõht sai niii kähku täis… Asta aina tõi sööki juurde ja juurde. Vahepeal jõudis Jan pitsidesse Viru Valget valada. Esimene pits läks nagu limonaad alla. Seest oli mõnusalt soe. Teist pitsi ma rohkem degusteerisin. Kolmas pits pidi üldse poolenisti valatud olema, Jan on lihtsalt nii ewul, et valas pitsi täis. Siis poole söömise pealt saime huvitavaid lugusid Erna kohta kuulda, ühte pikka luuletust ka, pani mõtlema. Hah, naljakaid asju juhtus ka tegelt, üks hea kild on see, et kui kõik hakkasid juba enam vähem ära hajuma, tuli Kadri vanatädi, Helju, Jani ja minu vahele pärima, et kes me siis oleme, algul küsis Janilt, et kes ta on, teada saades, et ta on Kadri lapsepõlvesõber, vaatas mulle näkku ja küsis Janilt, et kas ma olen tema abikaasa =D=D. FUN, Mul oli, et wtffff =D, Heljut olen ma ju näinud, temaga rääkind ja värki. Siis seletasin, et olen Kadri sõbranna, Kadri hõikas vahele, et tema parim sõbranna, Helju siis vaatas ja küsis, et kas Kristiiiiina või.. Justnii ! Fun. Jani pilk oli sel momendil hea =D.

Siis hakkasime kõik ülejäänud toidukraamid kokku kraapima Kadri poolt toodud kilekottidesse, Kadri leivavarud ulatuvad nüüd järgmise aastani =D. Jan sai endale isegi ühe Viru Valge kaasa. No on parm. Kuna Kadril pidavat bemmil üks kumm tössis olema, läksime Janiga jala kodupoole. Vahetasime riided ära ja läksime välja, sihtmärgiks baar ! Mnjah, poole tee pealt pidime tagasi pöörama, mul jäi isikut tõendav dokument (nüüdsest juhiload) koju.  Jan tegi meile esimese ringi välja, Kadri – Passoa, Mina – Pina Colada ananassimahlaga, Jan – maimäletaenam, ausalt. Siis ühines meiega mälleris olev Seire, nimeks tal Jan aga me kutsume teda ikkagi Seireks, tema tegi meile teise ringi välja. Pisang apelsinimahlaga, 3 tükki, ise jõi mingit viskit ja pealekaks oli kohvi. Kolmandaks ringiks oli Bacardi midagi-midagi =D. Nojah, vahepeal siis ühines mälleris oleva tüübi sõber, kes oli veel rohkem mälleris kui too mälleris olev mäller ! =D Ühesõnaga Seire mingi sõber. Too istus minu juurde ja üritas midagi aretada. Mul tuli kopp ette, ütlesin ”Ma lähen käin korraks vetsus”, too ull mäller võttis enam-vähem ümbert kinni, et a-la, et lähe ma kusagile. Tema haaradest vabanesin ma kähku ja triivasin vetsu. Mõne aja ootasin seal ja ühinesin uuesti meie kambakesega. Seekord aga istusin Jani kõrvale, äärde, et saaks kiiresti põgeneda, kui vaja. Seire vahepeal rääkis, et kui hea ikkagi Kadri vanaisa on, et ta ikka hoolib Kadrist väga, hoiab teda ja värki. Ja nii see ongi. Mnjah, siis saime veel teada, et Kadri on tegelikult POISS. Ahm, Jan oli vahepeal tüdruk (Seire rääkis midagi, et a-la Kadri tuli oma sõbrannadega baari xD). Lõpuks kisus jutt ikka väga ära, Seire küsis, et kes Janile ikkagi rohkem meeldib, et kas tema tüdruk (vaatas mulle näkku) või Kadri, ise jahudes, et rohkem kaldub vasakpoolsele (to the left, to the left). Seire küsis veel 23572 korda, et kas me ikka lähme tema juurde, sauna, nillis Kadrit kaasa tulema.. Ohjah… Mäller-mäller.

Õhtu-ööse möödus rahulikult, vaatasime Janiga mingit filmi ”millepealkirimulhetkeleitahameeldetulla” jaa näitas veel mõningaid pilte, mis tal seal kaisuraalis oli.  Lilla villa kaisuraal. Need vanad telekamängu on ikka….. kek.

Hommikul oli äratus 7:40, ärkasin suht mingi 10 minutit varem. 8:40 Mulgi reisidega Tartu. 10:30 läks Jan tagasi kodumainen Iisakusse, 11:30 läksin mina kodumainen Puhja, mulgi reisidega. 12:00 minek tudimaale. 14:00 ärkamisaeg, ”wtf mis päev on, kus ma olen, mis kell on, kas on ööse või päev ?” igatahes teadmatus, hetkeline juhe.

ბრენდი რომელიც სამწუხაროდ ჩვენს ქსელში არ მოიპოვება საოცარი სიძვირისა და საკმაოდ მცირე ასორტიმენტის გამო.

  FLOS _ ბრენდი რომელმაც შეცვალა განათების კონცეფცია. ბრენდი რომელსაც ყავს საკმაოდ ძლიერი დიზაინერები, რომლებიც არ ერიდებიან ყველაზე პროვოკაციული მოდელების შექმნასაც კი. ბრენდი რომელიც მუდმივად ეძებს ინოვაციურ ტექნოლოგიებს და მასალებს.

Fლოს 1962 წელს მერანოში დაარსდა DINO GAVANA-სა და CESARE CASSINA-ს მიერ, რომლებსაც სურდათ ეწარმოებინათ თანამედროვე სანათები. ახალი განათების კონცეფციების განვითარებისათვის მათ თავი მოუყარეს ცნობილ დიზაინერებს :

ACHILLE CASTIGLIONI, PIER GIACOMO CASTIGLIONI & TOBIA SCARPA. პირველი მათი მონაპოვარი იყო ე.წ. აბრეშუმის ჭიის პარკი “COCOON” ძალიან დამყოლი მასალა. 

   FLOSის პირველი საცალო მაღაზია 1968 წელს გაიხსნა მილანში. 1974 წელს ფლოსმა იყიდა ისტორიული ბრენდი ARTELUCE.

    1992 წელს ACHILLE CASTIGLIONI-მ ბაზაარს წარუდგინა პროდუქციის ოჯახი სახელად ბრერა, რომელიც ძალიან მალე გახდა ბესტსელერი (მე რატომღაც არ მომწონს).   ფლოსის სახლი დღემდე განაგრძობს მსოფლიოში ცნობილი და ნიჭიერი დიზაინერების მოპოვებას ერთ ერთი მათგანი მათ 1988წელს იპოვეს და აღმოაჩინეს, ეს არის მსოფლიოში ერთ ერთი ყველაზე ცნობილი დიზაინერი განათების სამყაროში, უსაზღვროდ ნიჭიერი და დიდი ფანტაზიის მქონე ფილიპ სტარკი.

ფლოსი თავიდანვე გამოირჩეოდა კრეატიულობით, კომპანია  უდიდეს ყურადღებას აქცევდა რეკლამას, მათთან თანამშრომლობდა ისეთი ცნობილი ფოტოგრაფი როგორიცაა JEAN – BAPTISTE MONDINO.

Fruit Bats

So after wanting to set up a blog championing brand new music for such a long time and finally doing it who better to start with than ‘Fruit Bats’, a band who formed a decade ago and released their fourth album this August.

Fruit Bats rose out of the ashes of Chicago based band I Rowboat in 1999 and released their first album Echolocation in 2001. Since signing to Sub Pop in 2002 the band has released three more albums; Mouthfuls (2003), Spelled in Bones (2005) and this Summer they released their fourth album The Ruminant Band.

Despite being around for 10 years Fruit Bats do possess a huge number of qualities that make them perfect for the first IOHO review. Despite their quality, ability and tours with bands such as Modest Mouse and Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci they remain relatively and unjustifiably unknown. They also scream of influence from classic 70’s folk rock as well as some more modern favourites. For their new album ‘The Ruminant Band’ Imagine Led Zeppelin III recorded by Fleetwood Mac and a host of 70’s superstars, covered by a band made up of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and the Two Gallants.

Fruit Bats may lack the heart pounding drive of a strong rhythm section but they do possess a great collection of melodies, lyrical imagery and musical flourishes that make them a must listen for fans of 70’s and modern folk.

Fruit Bats are currently on a European tour promoting their new album ‘The Ruminant Band’ from which IOHO recommends the following tracks:
