Suddenly it is end of year poll reflection time again, and the UK Sunday newspaper The Observer has today recommended The Beatles Stereo box set as the box set of the year, obviously. So, what I intend to do here is mashup my favourite ten tracks from the Remasters with my favourite ten tracks from 2009. As you DJs out there know it doesn’t quite work like that as you need to go with the Flow, so this isn’t quite my 10 /10 selection but I think it works as a mix; so lets start with a wake up call GOOD Morning Beatles Fans…

Love the fade-out of the animals at the end, Johns’ request to Geoff Emerick was to engineer a fade out sequence of animals who would eat the previous one. And in a dog eat dog (!?) world Miike Snow have come out in 2009 with a personal view of what the credit crunch makes them feel like; an Animal right? Sequencers set to stun on this one…

So circling synthesizers courtesy of of a Swedish Rasputin mashup, what can the Beatles say to that? The weathers fine, with swirling Rain, backing tapes and absolutely awesome bass from Paul. If you are reading this Mr Paul McCartney let me say that the revelation of the Remasters for me is your bass; absolutely unbelievable!

Nice alternative Rain video from Filippo Paparelli’s “Art and the Beatles” series, worth a look, but we need another video from a world-straddling four-headed musical colussus with a manager as the fifth member of the band and who want to change the world; that’ll be U2 then. Inspired by Ringo’s Rain drumming? Don’t hold your breathe… Breathe!

So after that we need something else that is uplifting and driving and joyous, so take a deep breathe and you can sing along to the happy guitar riff song… (yeah I know this is the bass and laughter remix) For those of you who want the laughter outtake it is here

OK, you can Ignore the Ignorant after that, even with Crib kids from Leeds, well county town Wakefield actually, as a West Yorkshire boy We Share The Same Skies, even with that Lancastrian loser Johnny Marr, what does he not know about jangly guitar riffs? Here they are ripping up the Letterman Show, whilst David pops out to his private room presumably? Oh yes only we know and “I know”

So if you are” lonely” and “wanna die” HOLD IT! Here are “Yer Blues” from the White Album, remastered and played by that cheap covers band Dirty Mac. John Lennon on rhythm and Boss, Keith Richard on bass and Clapton let out on lead for the duelling guitars section and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Beatles, Cream, Stones and Hendrix sidemen, no wonder they didn’t catch on. I Like It though! Low-fi version here…

And now my own personal favourite track of the year.  My “honesty is concentric” too, as it was created on turntables of course, it is The Invisible now with a Monsters Waltz for all of us. Just brilliant, who are these guys? And a cracking live version here, but this is what I grew up with back in November 2009…

A riffing thoughtful challenge from The Invisible, so George what can you come up with to challenge that then? Old Brown Shoe! This was hidden behind The Ballad of The Bagism Duo but is a driving sock that sparkles afresh in the light of Remastering; foot down and drive it away, Georgie boy…

Less original that The Invisible, and with a title like that they must be American, but well Beatlesy on the chorus, Empire of the Sun (is that inspired by Spielberg or JG Ballard, or both) hit minor key majesty with We Are The People which of course is almost the American Constitution; it’s a kicker and you can sing along. Oh they are from Oz and their singles flopped! What do I know?

But a definite lead in to The Ballad of John and Yoko. The Beatles were arguably more popular in Australia than anywhere else, having the Top SIX singles there when they had the Top Five in the US, April 1964. And their top single was the All My Loving EP, extra-ordinary stuff, but here is the newspaper ballad instead; just John and Paul in a day. Remaster version here but here is a video cleverly cut to match the lyrics;

And here is a great 2009 track from Zero 7 which Swings along to the filmic theme of the year. Notice the sweet use of the “Hang” drum towards the end, kind of like an expensive steel drum, and also judiciously in evidence on the Portico Quartet Cittagazze.

You say you want a set of Remasters, well you know, we all want to remix the world. Shooby doo-wop, got to be the live version for me.

So after a Revolution I guess we would all speak Fula like Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba as West African music continues to refresh itself, especially in Mali and Bamako. The sound reminds me of Salif Keita’s classic Sorro album. Here they are on Jools Holland’s Later going even faster than the recorded version!

I love the story that The Beatles recorded Hey Bulldog whilst they were filming the video for Lady Madonna, too boring just to mime lets’ make music guys. I think this was the last song they made together as the four of them, but here is the Out-take from the movie

And here is a genius piece of  re-invention, Norah Jones Chasing Pirates and sexier than Keira Knightley. Great voice, thumping tune (?) Here is the official video but great performance..

But as well as coming from Somalia Pirates can be losers too even before heading off towards Davy Jones locker. This was written by Lennon in his Fat Elvis period and for some reason they released the great I Feel Fine as the single instead of this Dylan inspired sing-a-long I’m A Loser; notice Lennon’s sartorial tribute to Dylan around his neck…

Old bands never die, or fade away, they just beget generations of successors. Here is Bad Lieutenant, title by Abel Ferrara (remake by Scorsese soon), yet another bit of genius from the Fact know as Manchester, sounds like The Smiths Meet Joy Division on a day off at the lido; Sink or Swim time guys

And this really reminds me of something, something with a harmonica and that New Order lilt and “little girls” and trains and the invention of the video by Dick Lester and a fade-in groove, what else? I Should Have Known Better! With the Liverpool Shuffle, here they are, “The Beatles”…

Magical Mystery Tour is The Beatles (one) moment of madness when they tried to manage themselves ofter Brian Epstein died, but I missed it as my Dad was in the Army and we were living in Germany so I have always had a soft spot for it, unlike the well ‘ard I Am The Walrus, which just seems to get Howlingly better over time for me, and how wonderful to hear a Remaster, despite the endless layers of tape hiss. Well that is what you got from the endless layers of invention involved. Electric Light Orchestra were invented in response to this track, and Oasis did a great version as an early calling card before they became mega. George Martin hated it but it changed the life of my “pornographic priestess” friend. Here is the original, now available in three flavours, original, remastered and Loved Up in Las Vegas…

And in the End, you have to love the trilogy of guitar solos, prefaced by Ringo’s one and only whole kit mashup. Abbey Road song-cycle, pop opera at its most sublime. And by 1′31″ i The Beatles have anticipated all of cock-rock, but withe precision, inter-play and power. The sequence of three guitar solos lasts 55 seconds; you can  guess who plays which and then find the answers here.

От един известен период ми се позагубиха изключително любимите музикални гении от Zero 7 и изобщо downtempo/trip-hop сцената, която аз следя, се замъгли. В последно време при мен тя се състои в прослушване на всичко, носещо имената на Morcheeba или Lamb (последните пък напълно спряха творчеството си преди четири години, но пък количеството, което оставиха след себе си, е магнетично привличащо). Доста време се ровех за нещо свежо в този жанр, отсвирвайки всички вокали, които пеят така сякаш  скоро е починал някой роднина или гаджето е казало “Стига!”. Аман от такива меланхолии – няма да изпадам в депресия или да задълбочавам някоя вече пристигнала. Искам емоции в албума, който слушам, и те да се предават както чрез някоя игрива мелодия, така и чрез бавно, приятно звучене. Временно утешение намерих в една доста алтернативна група, но за нейния дебют ще отделя друг път място. Всъщност каква се случи тя накрая – новият албум на Zero 7 потропа на вратата, вероятно усетила стоновете ми. Естествено, поради имбецилните ми способности за наблюдение, открих тавата няколко месеца, след като е видяла бял свят и проплакала за внимание.

Yeah Ghost (или Йо, призрак!) е завръщането на нежните вокали и брутално оригиналните музикални фонове на Zero 7. Още сега може да си припомниш Destiny, Somersault, Home и In The Waiting Line, за да разбереш възбудата ми. Проектът е дело на три-годишен труд (поне според баба Уикипедия) и в промеждутъка 2006 – 2009 година, освен “Призрака”, Сам и Хенри (пичовете зад Zero 7) правят нова група, която създава само инструментали. При положение, че предишният албум The Garden ти е харесал, то считай, че и Yeah Ghost ще бъде толкова прилепчив. Без да се впуска в някакви дълбинни експерименти (освен един, но за него малко по-долу) или да измисля революционни пеения, последната работа на Zero 7 е още от същото много, ама много добро вплитане на електроника, джаз и три-хоп. Качеството на всичките тракове е на високо ниво, а Еска Мтунгвази (не се смей, тя изпълнява повечето прилепчиви песни), Марта Тилстън, Джаки Даниелс (наздраве от екипа) и Рауди Суперстар постигат върхови резултати.

Отсега да си кажа, че за мен в компилацията няма празно парче. Само Ghost Symbol е доста под въпрос, защото е някакъв адски странен експеримент с различни гласове. Бекграундът му е безупречен, докато при вокалите не мога да определя как се е получило – сполучливо или не – мисля, че е до нагласа. На Mr. McGee така съм щракал с пръсти, че сега ги трия от болка, милите ми зачервени. Може би, най-жизнерадостният и зареждащ с енергия трак – от време на време напомня на Lamb. Swing и Pop Art Blue са типични Zero 7 – кореняшки песни от начало до край. Изненадата идва с Everything Up, която се изпълнява – доста успешно според мен – от Хенри Бинс, който по принцип не докосва микрофона. Споменатата горе Еска превръща Medicine Man в тежка заразителна песен. Пример за това бяха скачащите ми в главата лирики, докато уж слушам рандъм лекция по психология – “Outrageous, simply outrageous!” Доста е трудно да ги откъснеш от съзнанието си. Същата изпълнителка се проявява и като съвършен глас на класическо downtempo парче в лицето на The Road.

При все, че Yeah Ghost е чудесен албум и аз ще си го слушам още неколкократно, траковете в него са възмутително малко. Работата по тавата е продължила около три години и получаваме само единадесет песни, в които три са инструментали. Тази ситуация ни оставя с две шепи от по четири вокални изпълнения. Това принципно не разваля особено общото впечатление, но оставя един съмнителен нюанс. Все пак слушаме четвъртия албум на Zero 7, момчетата и момичетата не са аматьори и досега не са разочаровали, а сякаш ни слагат на масата нещо не изцяло довършено. При все това цялостното впечатление е повече от приятно, пък и така се прихваща от тази Zero 7 “пристрастеност”, че чуеш ли ги, задължително имаш нужда от “само още няколко слушания”.

Yeah Ghost est le dernier album en date du groupe anglais Zero 7  (zéro seven).

Ce duo masculin s’est imposé depuis sa naissance en 2000 et de son premier album ‘Simple Thing’ dans le style downtempo. Très vite, on les a mis au niveau des ténors Air & Morcheeba apparu à la fin des années 90. A la différence de ces derniers,  Zero 7 garde toujours cette même fraicheur 4 albums plus tard.

“Yeah Ghost est 1 très bon album qui s’écoute du début à la fin avec l’envie de remettre 1 replay après le 11ème morceau. Il y a dans cet opus 1 véritable identité musicale que l’on retrouve dans les albums précédents.

Néanmoins l’album précédent m’a beaucoup déçu ; “The Garden” sorti en 2006 n’a d’ailleurs pas réussi à conquérir les fans.

Seul 1 titre “Throw It All Away”est largement au dessus d’1 album très plat et vide musicalement.

Dès l’intro “Count me Out”, Zero 7 nous mets de suite en émoi.

1minute et 30 secondes plus tard “Mr McGee” ajoute cette petite touche pop anglaise facilement reconnaissable au style préconçu de Zéro 7.

S’en suit “Swing”, morceau à l’accroche baladeuse comme un retour à la source de l’album “Simple Thing” (sortie en 2001).

“Everything Up” nous replonge dans l’esprit rythmé des synthés venu tout droit de la galaxie 80′.

“Pop Art Blue” s’enchaîne et on retrouve avec bonheur cette voix féminine  qui ressemble à la voix de Sia, la chanteuse qui fut révélée par Zero 7. Pourtant quelque chose attire vraiment ma curiosité dans cette voix. Après recherche il s’avère qu’il s’agit de Martha Tilston.Le duo anglais applique à la lettre ce mélange voix féminine & downtempo tellement accrocheur qu’ils ont crée il y a 10 ans. La chanteuse Sia, malheureusement absente de l’album est donc remplacée par plusieurs autres voix. Celle figurant sur “Pop Art Blue”  cristallise le morceau et moi par la même occasion.

“Medicine Man” est entrainant, pop, sautilleur, et pourrait largement faire nouvelle vie auprès de jeunes talents remixeurs.

Finalement mon coup de coeur arrive maintenant, avec “Ghost Symbol”. Tout de suite je ressens la même émotion qu’à la première écoute de ‘Untrue’ l’album de Burial et cette façon si magnifique d’associer le dub au 2 steps.

Grâce à cette diversité de titres très éclectiques, Zero 7 avec Yeah Ghost a réussi son coup.

“Sleeper” est passé à la moulinette électronica, un petit coup d’oeil rapide pour vérifier sur quel label ce disque a été signé : Warp ??? et bien non. ça sera ma seule déception.

“Solstalgia” nous plonge dans une petite mélancolie, mais on reprend tout de suite le dessus, grâce notamment à une autre petite merveille intitulée “The Road”, Ce morceau me rappelle la façon dont j’ai découvert Zero 7 et son morceau “This World” .

L’album se termine (déjà ) en puissance avec le titre “All Of Us”, un OVNI expérimental où l’on retrouve la totalité des sons entendus sur l’album.

Vous l’aurez compris, ce disque doit parvenir rapidement jusqu’à vous.  Pour vous motiver, allez faire un tour sur leur site officiel. Celui ci propose l’écoute intégrale de morceaux issus de leurs 4 albums studio.

Du coup, ça me fait aussi pensé qu’il faut voir (et/ou revoir) le film Garden State du réalisateur Zach Braff dans lequel vous entendrez plusieurs morceaux de Zero 7 et d’autres artistes que vous aimerez à coup sur.

Gigandmix

Soundtracks, we all have our favorites and some of us refuse to acknowledge their existence all together. I, on the other hand, have a good relationship with soundtracks, depending on the movie/television show/web series it comes from. These are pretty good choices that I just happen to own, interested? Read on.

#A – Girl Interrupted.My first glimpse into WILCO, a lovely little band that may see a bit on the pretentious side but really have some amazing songs. One of those bands that make you love every song, sound, word, vibe. They start off this semi-depressing group of misfit songs that work well with the movie of the same description. Title works fantastic with the motif of this album, “How to Fight Loneliness”, this first glimpse was not the end of my relationship with Wilco, they are still alive in my soul to this day. This album also has one of the greatest bands and one of my favorite songs from them, Jefferson Airplane with “Comin’ Back to Me”, such a beautiful song, really beautiful is the one perfect word to explain this song, and most of their music as a whole. Other artists include, Aretha Franklin, The Band, The Mamas & The Papas. Take a listen why don’t you?

#B – The Craft.

Witches who just so happen to be a bunch of bitches, makes for a great soundtrack, well its more of a sentimental one for me with a couple good songs that make me reminiscent of the first viewing of the movie. Great pop song with Letters to Cleo’s “Dangerous Type” and some heavy grungy hate music with Sponge’s “All This and Nothing” and a surprisingly good song by Our Lady Peace with “Tomorrow Never Knows”, (you can tell I’m obviously not their #1 fan). A not so good cover of a Harry Nilsson song, Tripping Daisy’s “Jump into the Fire”, I’d rather” they have put the original but they never asked my opinion on the subject. Some other good jams, like Spacehog’s ”Horror” & Love Spit Love’s “How Soon Is Now”, but the gem is Matthew Sweet’s “Dark Secrets” which made me want to own it to begin with, it pleases the ear gods for sure.

#C – Jawbreaker

Yes, pranks that turn deadly mixed with pretty girls who look nothing like the regular high school student, proves great for a rockin’ soundtrack. (Plus, Julie Benz, a young vampire on BTVS, classic). Songs to get you pumped and sent back into the 90’s like a whirlwind. I’ll start of with the favorites, The Friggs ”Bad Word for a Good Thing”, those Frigg girls can belt and rock, plus rock while never becoming famous, some hardcore girl power going on with that song. The icing on the cake? Imperial Teen’s “Yoo Hoo”, again the reason I even wanted the album in the first place, an amazing jam with the most intoxicating sound, voice is prime on this one. Ending it out with one of the most depressing songs I’ve ever heard in my life, The Transisters “Flow”, its beautiful and sad and painful, if I ever needed to be heartbroken with a theme song, this is it. Having a bad breakup? Lost a person close to you? Listen UP.

#D – The Wedding Singer

Get ready for some 80’s! This soundtrack has the “good shit” from the 1980’s, and its a double disc-er! Unfortunately I only have one half the album but that’s alright by me.  The half I have has bands like, Billy Idol, David Bowie, New Order, Musical Youth, Elvis Costello, The Thompson Twins, The Police, Culture Club, The Psychedelic Furs, and so on. If your in an 80’s mood, then stick the sucker in and enjoy your weird flashback that ensues.

yeah, tricked you. I know its not a song, but Buscemi rocks.

#E – Garden State.

We’ve got some good ones on here folks. Of course their is the “what lead me to own it” song, which we’ll begin with. Frou Frou’s ”Let Go”, a very graceful sound and is a basic recap of the movie itself. Jump in, what are you waiting for? Date Natalie Portman, Zach Braff, just DO IT! But any who, next up is another great jam, that I didn’t come in contact until long after I had the Cd, but when a friend of mine did it in a talent show, another song full of beauty, Bonnie Somerville’s “Winding Road”, pretty voice meets pretty sound, good good. The entire beginning of this Cd gets me in a crazy odd mood, I used to listen to it on my Ipod walking through the halls of high school, very surreal. First, Cold Play’s “Don’t Panic”, and No, I am not a cold play fan or freak, its the only song I dig, so get over it. Following it, is The Shins with “Caring is Creepy”, great sound, goes right through to the bone. And after that? Zero 7’s “In the Waiting Line”, one of the other songs I am in love with on this soundtrack, a main reason you might as well just go out and get it right now.

#F – Once More With Feeling – BTVS

A musical episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer belongs on this list, if not dominating it. Joss Whedon, the entity himself, wrote the songs, music, all of it. Which would be good reason for me to love it so, and I do. Its addictive to the highest extent. These actors, just people, who yes, famous, but normal; not singers, (well not all of them, James Marsters, Amber Benson, & Tony Head), just people, made beautiful music together. I probably listen to it at lease a couple times a week. I don’t think I would have the power to actually say out loud, or type, my favorite song from this album. I’ll just go through most of them for you to decide.

So, we start with Buffy complaining shes lost her mojo for her job, we can all sing a long as the demons agree with her and she diss’s the gentleman in distress.

Then you’ve got a group jam with the gang, which turns ugly with Anya, the demon, yelling about bunnies, and ending with a who-even-gives-a-crap attitude brought along by sad-sap Buffy.

A song about Mustard being removed from clothing.

A lesbian love song between the 2 most believable, non-skanked-out-for-the-sake-of-MALES-everywhere lesbians on television ever, and probably will always be. You just gotta love Willow & Tara, for ever, and ever, and so on.

Then we have the couple, demon and construction worker, Anya & Xander, talking about the things they can’t stand about each other that they could never say out loud, without song of course, which leads towards the end with Anya “dancing crazy!”. You have to love a song  that has a line about penis diseases, classy.

One of great writers of the show finds herself singing about a ticket she’s getting for parking in front of a hydrant, which has become one of my favorites to sing in the car.

Then the addictive song of Spike, the whiny love ridden fool song, he even admits he’d be Buffy’s slave, talk about being whipped. Just let him rest in peace, Buffy. Just let him be buried and go get Angel to sooth the pain. Sorry…

Next, a snippet of dawn’s voice before she gets kidnapped, pretty voice while its lasts.

Pretty Ballet instrumental leads to the dancing demon, Sweet, singing out with his great deep man singing voice trying to hit on 15 year old Dawn, Hawt.

A big hit in my car sing-a-long, the Giles song, sad but upbeat and lovely, he doesn’t want to leave Buffy, but needs to, sweet slow-mo scene with some kick-ass dodging of sharp things while pulling off some gymnastic moves, go SMG.

Here we have 2 songs emerge which is a high on the list for me, putting together the two amazing voices of Tony Head and Amber Benson, wonderful actors and brilliant singers. Such a beautiful addition to the already amazing track listing.

Up next, everyone joins in while wanting to walk through the fire, another great song, with some awesome lines, “things are turning out so dark”, “No, I’ll save her then I’ll kill her!” &  “I think this line mostly filer”. The best part is when the scooby gang chimes in and does their little part, is the slayer too far gone to care?

Then us listeners get something to sing about, a glittering world, and a dancing almost-to-her-death Buffy ending with dropping the heaven bombshell.

And to help finish it off, sweet rubs it in all our faces that things didn’t quite go our way with the whole dancing thing, that lead to the death thing, and the “aw we all have so many secrets!” thing.

Ending with the cast leaving confused, not knowing where to go from there. And a big sloppy wet one from Buffy & Spike, which I wish i could scrub from my brain.

If you’ve never see the episode, watch it. If you’ve never heard the soundtrack, listen to it. You’ll have to track it down like I did, since the boyfriend and I bought the only 2 copies in our area. Plus, if your REALLY lucky, like me, you’ll get to take a trip to Indianapolis and watch actors act out the episode, sing the songs, and dance the dances, an amazing experience, especially on the night before Halloween.

#G – Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog

How shocking, right? Another Joss choice, you get my love yet? Do you? Do You? Well you’ll figure it out eventually. Now, this sound track is Uh-Maze-Ing, seriously. NPH (For the less hip folks, Neil Patrick Harris) really shows us the talent that Doogie never really did, he sings, and he sings well. Fantastically well to be exact. He’s a villain looking for his big villainy break, to belong to the big-bad’s club, that’s of course ran by a horse, derr. Then we have the love interest, with a killer voice, no other than the beautiful Felicia Day, (who if you don’t watch the guild, START, I’ll explain more later), the helpless-helping-homeless-home-giving goddess that the villain is head-over-heels in love with. But in walks the bad guy, wait no, the GOOD guy. He just happens to be a prick, with a picture of a hammer on his chest. But he is played by no other than the mystical, magical, stud-man-guy Nathan Fillion. The guy crushes of the world surround this guy, which makes it easy for your Felicia, “Penny”, to fall for instead. (sad). So with this comes amazingly catchy songs that, yet AGAIN, Whedon is responsible for, also making it a family affair adding brothers and a sister-in-law. This is another Cd that is found being played in my car multiple times within a week. You’ve GOT to get this soundtrack, like now, LEAVE, GO!

#H – Pick of Destiny

Okay, Tenacious D is the best band EVER. Maybe this statement is not something you would agree with, and if it isn’t, stop lying. Seriously you know the truth, they probably ARE the greatest band EVER, why you ask? Because they have it ALL. What other band can use curse words like poetry, I mean really, “Mother Fucker” never sounded so good. If you haven’t had the chance to gander at the power that is the D, its time my friends. My passion for the D is forever deep, I was hooked the first time I heard them, saw them, and inevitably fell for them. “The Pick Of Destiny” is a movie and an album, and both are glorious. Watching Jack Black and Kyle Gas for 93 minutes straight has to be an experience, and sir, it was. But, the soundtrack that came along? GODLIKE, truly amazing music, which is not surprising from this duo. Another album i could not possibly begin the misery of deciding the best song on it, so you will have to venture out on your own and taste the taste that is TENACIOUS D.

#I – Nashville

Great movie, wonderful soundtrack. Robert Altman is an amazing director and he did an amazing job on all the movies I’ve seen of his. They always have crazy relationships, and madness masked in innocence and he didn’t shy away from that with this one. Country singers, singing and crawling in drama filled situations; if you get a chance make sure to check this one out, i have a feeling you’ll be pleased if your in anyway cool, or hip, or happenin’ in the way I am. So rent it, steal it, borrow it, either way watch it, and make sure you listen to the songs you hear, it won’t be hard. I’ve leave you with a video of my favorite song from the movie that happens to be a great part of the film. Watch and aw.

AIR – Sing, Sang, Sung

From Air’s latest album ‘Love 2′, singsangsung is the first single off the album. It’s a very light, breezy tune that you can sing along to on a sunny day. The sound is a mixture of acoustic with electronics with a vintage beat that reminds me of the 50’s and 60’s. Somehow the Brady Bunch comes to mind. This sound is actually quite new to the French duo. Perfect for a lazy afternoon.

ZERO 7 – Everything Up

The first single off Zero 7’s latest album also sample the vintage beats of the 60’s into “Everything Up’. The mid tempo track features rather retro synthesizers with vocals from Binns himself. There’s a mix of different sounds in the track that somehow blends well together, the drums, the fast beat, the guitars and the synthesizer. A rather dreamy track that puts you in a fantasy trance….in a good way.

YEAH GHOST: People sometimes forget, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker of Zero 7 really earned their way. Both started out as sound engineers, at a record company that produced the likes of Robert Plant and Pet Shop Boys. They called up an old college friend Nigel Godrich, producer for Radiohead, and asked him to send them songs so they could practice on honing their skills. The rest is history. Since then, they put out a terrific freshman album “Simple Things” — featuring guest singers Sia Furler and Sophie Barker. They followed that up with three more albums, including the most recent, “Yeah Ghost.” Now they have to see what they can do without Furler’s pipes. Below is a track off the “Yeah Ghost” record called, “Swing.” I could listen to this all day.

Wiadomo, jak się freelance’uje, lepiej nie mieć zbyt wielu wolnych dni, bo może się okazać, że na półkach robi się coraz tłoczniej, brakuje czasu, aby wszystkiego posłuchać i – co najgorsze, kasa kończy się szybciej niżby się tego chciało (o ile w ogóle chce się czegoś tak szalonego). Święto nie święto, postanowiłem sobie, że będę siedział do burej nocy (słowa dotrzymuję, bo właśnie jest ciemno i buro) i słuchał maksymalnie dużo, aby chaos na podręcznym stole z płytami zmniejszył się choć na chwilę, zaś wzrosła “wieża” materiałów przesłuchanych. 11 listopada 2009 zapamiętam jako dzień bolącej głowy od muzycznych różności. Głównie zagranicznych, w zdecydowanej większości bolało aż miło, zaś raz miło nie było.

Nie trafił do mnie drugi album Maleńczukowego Psychodancingu. Pojmuję, że artysta potrzebuje czasami pokazać gawiedzi, jaki to on jest wszechstronny, jak wiele umie, z jaką gracją porusza się po różnych dźwiękowych krainach. Ale na “Vol. 2. Alchemii piosenki” obcujemy z podróżą chaotyczną, bez jakiejś przewodniej myśli, naszpikowaną mnóstwem zaskoczeń, na które niekoniecznie chcemy mieć ochotę. Słowo “dancing” narzuca pewną konwencję, sprawia, że spodziewamy się pewnego rodzaju piosenek, zaś przedrostek “psycho” jakby niweluje tę przewidywalność, oddala się przez niego to, co przez słuchacza oczekiwane. Z tego zestawienia wyszło coś, co niewiele daje przyjemności, a zaskakuje raczej tym, że męczy zamiast bawić. Folk uliczny, rock, blues, pop wychodzą Maleńczukowi czasami nieźle. Śpiewać on umie, bawić się słowem także. Ale filtrowanie własnej twórczości nie jest jego mocną stroną. Takie jest moje odczucie. Jajo jajem, lecz Bee Gees, Afric Simone czy The Shorts jakoś mi do Macieja nie pasują.

Im dalej w dzień (i w noc) tym lepiej, przyjemniej. Zestaw hitów Skunk Anansie warto mieć. Nie tylko dlatego, że są na nim chyba wszystkie kapitalne kawałki sprzed lat, a jak ktoś ma za ciężki portfel, to może zaopatrzyć się w wersję z DVD (15 klipów) lub limitowaną czteropłytową z remiksami i nagraniami koncertowymi. Najważniejsze jest to, że na “Smashes And Trashes” są trzy nowe piosenki i że są one bardzo dobre. Nie jest tak, że najpierw mamy mocarzy z minionej dekady, zaś obok nich pojawiają się ubodzy krewni przebojów z XX wieku. “Because Of You” nie traci wciśnięty między “Secretly” a “All I Want”, “Tear The Place Up” wybucha między “Hedonism” a “Weak”, zaś ładna ballada “Squander” koi nas pomiędzy “Twisted” a “Lately”. Skunk Anansie rozbudzili mój apetyt na kolejną płytę studyjną i jestem pewny, że kto posłucha kompilacji pozostanie z podobnym odczuciem.

Była jeszcze jedna polska płyta w Dzień Niepodległości (nawiasem pisząc, tak zatytułowane jankeskie szmirowate i rozbuchane efektowo filmowe arcyniedzieło prezentowano dziś w telepudle). Nowa, młoda polska grupa Echoes Of Yul. Wiedziałem, że ta nazwa już kiedyś obiła mi się o uszy, a Arek Młyniec z Foreshadow Music i Omnio.pl, który krążek dystrybuuje, uświadomił mi, że opolanie supportują (właściwie to już supportowali) poważany przeze mnie wielce amerykański Dälek. Ale Echoes Of Yul to zupełnie inne granie. Punkt wspólny to mrok, przerażenie, niepewność – te cechy klimatu muzyki znajdziemy u obydwóch wykonawców. Polacy preferują jednaj granie przytłaczające, drone’owe, coś z okolic Sunn O))), Neurosis, pogrzebowego doomu… To skojarzenia po jednym na razie przesłuchaniu, więc niech nikt się do nich za bardzo nie przywiązuje :-) Album trwa sporo ponad godzinę, więc na jego poznanie trochę mi zejdzie. Oprawa graficzna przypomina mi kolorystyką i atmosferą obrazy z jedynki “Blair Witch Project”. Muzyka EOY sprawdziłaby się w tym obrazie znakomicie.

Po drone’owym walcu ukojenie jest niezbędne. Lizanie ran na narządach słuchu spadło na Zero 7. Przyznaję, wcześniej nie znałem ich muzyki. Niby nie są z mojego kręgu, ale ich ambitna elektronika może się podobać. Angielski duet ma ciekawe pomysły, a do śpiewania zaprasza zdolne panie o może niewielkich nazwiskach, lecz interesujących głosach i sporych zdolnościach interpretatorskich. Piszą o Zero 7, że to ambient, trip-hop, downtempo… Chrzanić etykietki. To dobra, mocno elektroniczna, spokojna i ambitna muzyka. No i jest tu hołd dla Zinedine’a Zidane’a 

Z Flaming Lips zawsze spotykałem się na krótko, po czym rozchodziliśmy się w różnych kierunkach. Nie żebym ich nie lubił, nie doceniał. Po prostu, jakość ich wcześniejsze dokonania nie trzymały mi się pamięci. Inna sprawa, że mój gust nie stał w miejscu i nie zawsze był tak rozciągnięty, jak obecnie. Ale ich “Embryonic” to bardzo, bardzo miłe zaskoczenie. Psychodeliczna jazda z dużą dawką elektroniki, mnóstwem przestrzeni, bynajmniej nie usypiająca, na pewno frapująca, mocno kinematograficzna. Z gościnnym udziałem MGMT i Karen O z Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Nagrać aż 18 piosenek, które nie męczą, to jest nie byle jaka sztuka. Ale Wayne Coyne to nie żółtodziób i umie komponować. “Embryonic” też będę musiał przepuścić przez uszy jeszcze ze cztery razy, bo raz to zdecydowanie za mało.

Bare with me through our latest voyage. Thanks to the Phils’ World Series loss, I’m in a bit of an ornery mood these days. My email box and Facebook account has been swamped with arrogant and cocksure emails from Yankee fans celebrating title 27. Most of which I can’t even put in print.

On Thursday, I estimated I had roughly five congratulations in me towards Yankees fans. I work around them all day, teach them, and call some of them friend. Nonetheless, I’m rationing out the kudos like it’s a small supply of Raman noodles on a deserted island. In fact, I only dished out two. Somehow, I don’t think the other three are leaving my mouth anytime soon.

One of the reasons for my anger is the multi-layered facade of Yankee fans and fans of the Dallas Cowboys.  Individuals use their team preferences as a bully pulpit to make themselves feel better about their otherwise somewhat questionable lives. Can you blame them though? As John Madden once said, winning is a great deodorant. Fans bathe in it.

Tired of waiting around for the local team to win or to spite their dad or to look cool for the girls in high school, we have become a nation of front runners. If you read TMW from two weeks ago, you know that I’ve crafted a plan to eliminate such nonsense.

In honor of the Eagles playing the Cowboys this weekend, it’s time to call into question perhaps the biggest set of frontrunning fans that don’t sport the interlocking NY on top of their heads.

I’m willing to bet most Cowboys fans under the age of 30 can’t answer 60 percent of these questions accurately without checking out Wikipedia.

The Culverhouse Index:

1. Detroit (1-6) – Detroit showed some limited promise this season but the Rams came into town and showed otherwise. A bad loss for the Lions.
2. St. Louis (1-7) – They were holding steady at the top spot until they finally came up with a win.
3. Kansas City (1-6) – Can’t the Chiefs stay on bye?
4. Washington (2-5) – Can’t the Redskins stay on bye?
5. Tennessee (1-6) – Finally, there is life. I’m not sure Vince Young is the answer at quarterback but with Chris Johnson running the ball it doesn’t matter at the moment.
6. Oakland (2-5) –At least they played well against the Chargers this season.
7. Cleveland (1-7) – They’ve scored six points or fewer in five of eight games this season.
8. Tampa Bay (0-7) – First win? Maybe December 6 at Carolina.
9. Buffalo (3-5) – Terrell Owens is on pace for 46 catches this season. Ouch.
10. Carolina (3-4) – Incredibly, the Panthers are one win away from being 4-4. The league is a bit down in ’09.

Ten Things We Learned in Week 8:

1. The Owen Daniels injury is going to slow the Texans passing game: Destined for a Pro Bowl this season, Daniels went down with a season ending torn ACL injury. The timing could not be worse for the Texans. Quarterback Matt Schaub is playing the best football of his career while the team plays a huge game against the Colts on Sunday.
   

   Maybe we overestimated the Giants. Woops.

2. Perhaps the Giants defense just isn’t that good: Over its last three games, the Giants surrendered 112 points; allowing 37 points per game over the same stretch. That’s what happens when C.C. Brown is covering people.
3. Percy Harvin is secretly one of the NFL’s most valuable players in 2009: Anytime the Vikings are reeling this season, Harvin finds a way to dig them out of trouble. The rookie from Florida leads the league in yards per touch with 19.8 yards
4. DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart pack a mean punch, as long as Jake Delhomme isn’t killing them: If Delhomme doesn’t turn the ball over; it makes things far easier for Williams and Stewart. Over the last three weeks, the Panthers have rushed for at least 250 yards twice.
5. The Jets = overrated: The bandwagon started to fill up after the Week 2 win over New England. However, the Jets’ fourth loss in the last fifth games has made the bandwagon quite a bit lighter. New York’s special teams turned Ted Ginn into a combination of Dante Hall and Devin Hester. How else do you explain the Dolphins scoring 30 points despite gaining just 104 yards?
6. Steve Slaton is killing your fantasy team one week at a time: Benched by Texans head coach Gary Kubiak last week in Buffalo, Slaton appears to be in great danger of losing playing time to backup Ryan Moats. He has lost five fumbles and is averaging 3.1 yards per carry. Sounds like a benching to me.
7. Anquan Boldin may never actually get his money: Boldin did not pose as a model teammate over the past year in part due to a lack of financial security. Now, Arizona’s star receiver has been unable to stay healthy for much of the season. After being hounded by a hamstring ailment, he is now battling ankle problems.
8. Part 1 of Operation 2006 has begun: Whenever you have a quarterback on the wrong side of 30, it is not a good thing in the long run. Arizona and Tennessee got away with it 2008. At least for Tennessee, the story turned differently this season as Vince Young finally made his way into the starting lineup. With the Cards in first, Warner is not in danger in Arizona…as long as he stops having those five interception performances.
9. Don’t look now but outside of Minnesota and New Orleans the NFC is a mess: Eliminate Detroit, St. Louis and Tampa Bay. What else do we know about the NFC? Everyone else hovers between two and five wins. Looks like December should be a mess for tiebreakers.
10. Bob Sanders is out for the year…adjust your fantasy lineups accordingly: Surprise, surprise. Sanders is out for the year with a torn bicep. Further compounding matters is a season ending injury to Marlin Jackson, who injured himself late in practice earlier this week. When backs get into Indy secondary (which Frank Gore did last week), look out.

Zero 7's new album Yeah Ghost

Zero 7 have been one of my favorite bands ever since someone bought the ‘When It Falls’ album for me. Beautifully produced, chilled out tracks make for very easy listening. Even now, typing this, I cannot think of a favorite song as they are all class.

After listening to that album to death I went and got it’s predecessor, ‘Simple Things’ which is much in the same style but in no way boring. Tracks like ‘In The Waiting Line’ and ‘Destiny’ show just how much can be achieved when care and attention is taken whilst putting a song together.

I was obviously excited when the band released ‘The Garden’ in 2006. At the time I was working at a radio station so managed to get my hands on a promo copy. It took me a few listens to really get into the album fully. I think it was the drastic change in style which shocked me but eventually I came around and it is now definitely a favorite album. I really enjoyed the inclusion of Hosé Gonzalez on a couple of tracks, especially Zero 7’s take on his track ‘Crosses’. Other notable tracks include ‘Throw It All Away’, ‘You’re My Flame’, ‘Today’ and ‘This Social Scene’.

The band has continued to redefine its sound with the newest release, ‘Yeah Ghost’. There are still elements of previous album sounds from the synthesizers many fans will be familiar with. The second track ‘Mr McGee’ really shows how much they have progressed. It is very much an R&B track with a very accessable, radio friendly structure. ‘Swing’ and ‘Everything Up’ give a much closer sound to tracks off ‘The Garden’ with ‘Medicine Man’ once again showing a very different style to what many will be used to.

‘Sleeper’ may well be the biggest shock on the album with some outrageous synths, female rap/sung vocals and a hip hop style beat that would easily fit with many, more commercial, releases today.

The penultimate track, ‘The Road’ bring us back to what you are likely to hear on ‘Simple Things’ and ‘When It Falls’ with layed back vocals and chilled out synthesizers.

As the album now finishes with ‘All Of Us’  I have been once again surprised by the change in style, but in today’s soulless music industry that is only a good thing. It may take a couple of listens but I’m sure it will become a new favorite, worthy of its place in my collection.

N.B. I recently grabbed a copy of the ‘Simple Things Remixes’ album and can recommend it. The ‘Bugz In The Attic’ remix of distractions is quality!

Quantic

Selon Wiki : Quantic est un pseudo de l’artiste Will Holland :«Quantic est le nom de scène utilisé par Will Holland, DJ, musicien et producteur de musique anglais vivant et travaillant en Colombie. Son style musical est un mélange de sonorité latines légèrement modernisées et couplées à de l’électronique. Will Holland joue sur la plupart des instruments entendus dans ses productions : guitare, basse, contrebasse, piano, claviers, sax, ainsi que tout type de percussions.»

Les mélodies sont très bien construites et le rythme est plus inspiré du hip-hop que de l’électro house.

Morcheeba

Selon Wiki : «Morcheeba est un groupe de musique britannique issu de Douvres mélangeant down tempo, trip hop, rythm and blues et pop. Il est formé des frères Paul Godfrey (DJ) et Ross Godfrey (guitare et clavier) ainsi que de la chanteuse Skye Edwards.» Le dernier album, Dive Deep est excellent, mais un peu relax à certains moments. Les titres à avoir sont  Enjoy de Ride et Run Honey Run. Le rythme vous prend tout de suite.

Supreme Being of Leisure

Selon Wiki : «Les Supreme Beings of Leisure, groupe d’un nouveau genre, associent programmation intelligente et grouve séducteurs et des parties vocales uniques communiquant un sentiment de nostalgie et de désillusion.»

Très bon CD, l’ensemble est bien fait et pas trop agressif ou électro, je le fais souvent jouer au resto et on trouve souvent un morceau dans les compilations que je fais.

Musique standard LOUNGE/JAZZ :

Gotan Project

Selon musique.ados.fr : «Le pari musical était au départ plutôt risqué : mélanger les sons techno aux musiques latines, au tango (gotan en verlan). A l’arrivée, c’est un pari plus que réussi : Gotan Project est devenu un incontournable des platines. Mais la reconnaissance dépasse les clubs, et la musique de Gotan Project s’écoute aussi bien dans une ambiance lounge que devant sa fenêtre, les yeux dans ses pensées et les images qui y défilent.»

Je ne crois pas mettre ça sur un dancefloor, mais bon, c’est bien dit et la musique est bonne, mais trop entendue quant à moi.

St-Germain

Selon Wiki : «L’univers musical de St Germain navigue entre Acid jazz, nujazz et deep housee. Il sort son premier album intitulé Boulevard en 1995  (élu meilleur album de l’année 1995 par la presse anglaise), suivi en 1999 par From Detroi To St-Germain tous deux sous le label F Communication. Il rejoint ensuite le célèbre label de jazz Blue Note Records pour lequel il réalise l’album Touriste en 2001.»

Touriste est bien fait, Ludovic Navarre (aka st-Germain) est très bon, mais on a vraiment trop entendue.

Zero 7

Selon wiki : «Zero 7 est un groupe britanique de musique électronique orienté down tempo, formé de deux Londonien : Henry Binns et Sam Herbaker: Zero 7 est également très repris à la télévision et au cinéma ainsi que sur des compilation lounge telles que Chillout Project par le DJ philippin Anton Ramos ou les compilations de l’Hôtel Costes.»

Wax Tailor Selon Wiki : «Jean-Christophe Le Saoût est un auteur,compositeur, producteur et manager français de musique connu sous le nom de Wax Tailor. Il sort son premier album Tales Of The Forgotten Melodies en mars 2005 après 2 EP dont le genre mélange le trip hop, le hip hop ou bien encore le down tempo, ses principales influences musicales. Son second album Hope & Sorrow sort en 2007 puis son troisième In the Mood for life en 2009.»

Selon Wiki : «Us3 est un groupe de jazz-rap britanique fondé à Londres en 1991. Leur musique est élaborée à partir de samples des classiques du label Blue Note. L’album Hand On The Torch, à mi-chemin entre jazz et hip-hop, sort en 1993.»

US3 sont les puristes du jazz-rap, c’est probablement les fondateurs du lounge trip hop d’aujourd’hui (on pense à quelques morceaux des Beastie Boys aussi).

RJD2 Selon Wiki : «RJD2, de son nom Ramble John Krohn, est un musicien hip-hop et producteur né à Eugène en Oregon le 27 mai 1996. Il fait partie du label Definitive Jux et a produit des chansons pour de nombreux artistes. Il fait partie du groupe Soul Position avec le rappeur Blueprint. Dead Ringer. Cet album le propulse dans une catégorie d’artistes parmi lesquels on peut compter DJ Shadow ou Prefuse 73. Plusieurs titres de Dead Ringer seront utilisés à la télévision, et dans des spots publicitaires.»

Un son un peu plus hip-hop que les autres, mais excellent

The Fort Knox Five

C’est un groupe de musique et une maison de production. Il font du très bon travail et les autres groupes du label sont fidèles au style; un style allumé, clair, funk au son hip hop.

Selon Wiki : «Fort Knox Five is aEshington D.C.-based recording artist consisting of Steve Raskin, Jon Horvath, Rob Myers, and Sid Barcelona. They have released their music on their own independent label The Fort Knox Recording. Their music style mixes elements of funk, Reggea, hiphop and Electronica.»

Les changements d’habitudes proposent quelquefois de bonnes surprises. Prenant les transports en commun depuis peu, je peux allègrement écouter dix fois plus de musique qu’auparavant.

Sur ce constat, je tenterais de vous proposer ma sélection musicale chaque mois et j’essayerais d’exprimer quelques critiques sur chaque album ou compilation égrainés au fil du temps.

Brittiläisen elektroduo, Zero 7:n, uusi albumi Yeah Ghost julkaistiin viime kuukauden loppupuolella. Zero 7 (Henry Binns, Sam Hardaker) on julkaissut aiemmin mainiot albumit Simple Things, When It Falls ja The Garden, joista viimeisin nimettiin vuonna 2007 Grammy-ehdokkaaksi.

Zero 7 on kokenut rajuhkon muutoksen edellisiin levyihin verrattuna: Edellisillä levyillä lauluosuuksia tehnyt Sia ei ole ollenkaan mukana Yeah Ghostilla. Yeah Ghost onkin tästäkin johtuen erilainen Zero 7 -levy. Levyllä on runsaasti selkeitä elektropop-elementtejä, joita aiemmilla levyillä oli vain niukasti, jos ollenkaan. Edellisten levyjen lämmin, jopa hemmotteleva, äänimaailma on muuttunut rosoisemmaksi ja kylmemmäksi.

Yeah Ghostilla kuullaan vierailevina solisteina Eska Mtungwazi, Martha Tilston ja Rowdy Superstar. Ainakin minulle nämä kaikki olivat kaikki käytännössä uusia artisteja.

Olen aina pitänyt Zero 7:n chillout-henkisistä kappaleista ja ehkäpä sen takia tällä levyllä suosikkikappaleiksi ovat nousseet Pop Art Blue ja The Road. Myös Everything Up (Zizou) tuntuu koko ajan hienommalta.

Kokonaisuutena Yeah Ghost ei yllä Zero 7:n parhaimmaksi levyksi, mutta varsinkin keveän elektropopin ystävät varmasti pitävät tästä levystä. Minä kaivan Simple Thingsin takaisin CD-soittimeen.

This is a new feature over here at Soul:UK, it’s nothing particularly ground-breaking, just an opportunity for me to share a few tracks that have been getting heavy play on my iPod in the last week or so.

First up is a track from The Revelations ft Tré Williams‘ new album The Bleeding Egde. The whole album is fantastic, but I keep coming back to this one track. I can’t even put my finger on a particular reason, but take a listen and I’m sure you will agree. The song tells the story of a couple who are both in relationships and seeing each other behind their partners backs. By no means a new concept in soul music, but this one is executed oh so well!

I featured Nadine Charles here earlier in the week. Her debut EP has been in constant rotation all week, in particular ‘Thanks (Take You Out)’. It has that ‘classic’ R&B sound that is missing from so much of todays music.

I’ve already mentioned Zero 7’s Yeah Ghost album here so I won’t ramble on. ‘The Road’ featuring the amazing vocals of Eska Mtungwazi is simply beautiful.

Andreya Triana and Bonobo are both artists firmly stuck on my musical radar so when I caught news of a collaboration I was excited to hear it. They did not disappoint with ‘The Keeper’, which is the first single from Bonobo’s new album, due early 2010.

So yesutrday I didn’t get the chance to take a picture what I wore for Camo day, but I assure you I did wear my cheetah print. lol Today was Decades day, & for the Seniors our decade was the 60’s.

So my Recently Playlist has been changing quite a bit and there’s some new and old stuff I have that’s been getting played about 24/7 lol

I recently descovered La Roux, and I love her music! It’s very up beat, and really fun too dance to. I guess these artist’s are on that playlist because I’m in the happy dance music phase lol. I’m a huge 80’s music fan so Bowie & Prince have always been one of my favs, but I recently got into La Roux, and have been loving Zero 7 for a while.

A hectic few weeks have put me behind with my semi-regular blogging schedule. I’m sat on mountains of stuff but simply do not have the time to write about all of it. Therefore I have decided to do a bit of a round-up rather than posting on each individual release/song/artist.

Paloma Faith – Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful

Some are viewing Paloma Faith as the latest in the ever-growing line of soul-pop starlets to come out of the UK in recent years. Many have made the obvious (and in my opinion,  lazy) comparisons to Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Adele etc but after listening to Paloma’s debut it is clear that she is definitely her own artist. The songwriting, singing and production on the album are first class and there are too many highlights to list out here. Suffice to say that Do You Want The Truth … comes highly recommended, and if you need further convincing check out the AudioDiva’s review here.

N’dambi – Pink Elephant

One of the most anticipated albums of 2009 has finally arrived, and opinion on it is pretty much unanimous … it’s classic N’dambi, and therefore is essential in any music lovers collection. Lead single ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ had the interwebs buzzing, and the album continues where the single left off. The vocal powerhouse, now on the legendary Stax label, strikes an almost perfect balance between contemporary and classic soul that should please fans both old and new.

Zero 7 – Yeah Ghost

I’ll admit I am not all that familiar with Zero 7. I’ve heard of them on numerous occasions, but as is often the case I never quite got round to checking them out, that all changed with the release of their latest project Yeah Ghost. The reason that this particular album caught my attention was the bands collaboration (on 4 tracks) with UK vocalist Eska Mtungwazi (for those of you unfortunate enough not to know the name, click here and get yourself aquainted). The album has recieved mixed reviews, however I enjoyed it from start to finish, particulary the tracks ‘Medicine Man’, ‘Mr Mcgee’ and ‘The Road’ (all featuring Eska on vocal duties).

Meshell Ndegeocello – Devil’s Halo

This is Meshell’s 8th studio album and is being touted by many critics as one of the highlights of her career. I have a somewhat ‘mixed’ relationship with Meshell’s music. I loved Plantation Lullabies, Peace Beyond Passion and Bitter. Cookie and Comfort Woman were mixed bags in my opinion. Dance Of The Infidels and The World Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams were not to my liking. For me Devil’s Halo falls somewhere in the middle. When she is on form the songs are great (see ‘Love You Down’) however there are a few songs, although not bad, just do not appeal to me.
