Here at the office, people have started decorating the place for Halloween. I’ve started my decorations as far back as when Oktoberfest started by bringing some miniature pumpkins and having my two Melissa Seraphy Nendoroids pose beside them. But now that decorations are starting to increase, I’m bringing out Nozomu-sensei as well…in the form that I’ve never used him in. His zetsubou form.

If anything, my halloween decor is cute and not even remotely horrifying.

So much work has driven our poor Nozomu-sensei into despair. And with no kanojou to have icha-icha moments with, he was more than willing to use the noose.

I made this video to highlight the …. plagiarism.

I wrote about using the iPod Touch as a makeshift lightsource for shooting toys at your desk before. I used my then-newly-acquired Revoltech Evangelion action figures as test subjects for this. Today, I’ll be trying it out on Nendoroids and something dark and flashy.

Shooting a toy up close on your desk where your room’s light source is mainly from above or from a camera creates shadows up in front when you move your camera for a closer shot. Having the light source from behind automatically creates shadows right in front of the subject you’re shooting while from above, you get shadows on the lower area of your subject. Having an additional light source helps drive away the shadows created by your main light sources.

The Flashlight App works pretty well in doing this job since it’s small, handy, easy to move around and works well with small subjects. So with this shoot, my gear consists of an iPod Touch and my handy Panasonic LX3.

In this example, my main light source is the large flourescent light right above my desk.  But since it’s almost directly above my subject, well, a bit to the right to be exact, it casts some shadow to the left of this picture. I positioned my iPod Touch at Kagamiku’s right (picture’s left side) to remove a good amount of that shadow. I used a pink light for this since I felt that it looks very nice.

For this one, I used white light.

Top image is Kagamiku without the additional light source. Notice the significant shadow cast from the light source above. Middle image has the white light source from the lower left. This makes the face of the figure a bit more visible. The pink light used on the image at the bottom is more for effect and additional light as well.

I’m not being positive twice in a row, I swear, but Zetsubou Sensei is actually one of my favorites. It introduces us to the incredibly negative and suicidal teacher, Itoshiki Nozumu, who is saved from hanging himself by the passing Fuura Kafuka, who tends to see everything in a positive light. Afterwards, Itoshiki discovers that this girl is actually in his class, along with several other… Characters. After complaining that when his name is written, it has an unlucky number of strokes, Fuura Kafuka writes it sideways, to reveal that it spells out Zetsubou (despair). This sticks throughout the rest of the series as a fitting nickname (hence, the title). This series does have the cheesy and oft-repeated shounen aspect where every girl in sight falls in love with the male lead, but this series is much better in that it’s really only used for comedic effect, and the author never leans toward one girl more than the other. After the initial introductions are over, the series quickly becomes one of the most ridiculous and hilarious things you’re bound to come across. Each chapter usually begins with Zetsubou Sensei complaining about one of the various aspects of life which has left him in despair, and wraps up with Fuura Kafuka trying to look at it positively. Each subject explored is usually very funny, and sometimes seems logical, even agreeable. There are hordes of outside references crammed into every chapter, even the chapter titles, which are commonly literary parodies. The art style compliments the content nicely, being rather simple, but very clean and non-distracting. There’s an anime, too. The order is a little wonky on some things (there was a character whose introduction episode came after she’d been in like the whole season), but the animation is excellent, and it more or less follows the manga exactly, with the exception of a few episodes. It even has really cool intro and outtro sequences. I would only worry about the fact that since the plot never actually goes anywhere, eventually the author may run out of gags, and that will make me sad.

Thought Miku would win. Group 32 is what got me the most, though. Mihoko actually beat Ayumu, which was sorta unexpected based on how Saki was doing. She has more fight in her than I thought. However, I didn’t see Azaka’s win coming. I have not seen the Kara no Kyoukai series yet, but I plan to. If it wasn’t for her, Mihoko might have prolonged Saki’s prescence in this tournament which is by the way gone. Overall, this match was pretty close anyways.

Thus, the Round of 96 ends, and we will be going into the Round of 32 where 2 characters will be pitted against each other in a 1-on-1 duel. It begins 9/10 Korean time. Here are the upcoming matches:

Also, I looked ahead in the list of matches and found that Mio is up against Yuki Nagato. It looks to be a huge match for her on 9/13. More on this when we get there.

This is the last match of the round. For group 31, I’m going for Hanyuu, but it’ll be nice if Minorin won. I’m not sure, but despite being a cameo in Zetsubou Sensei, Miku did pretty well last year over here. I wouldn’t be surprised if she won. Next year, she’ll be more official thanks to Black Rock Shooter. I need to look into that as well.

For Group 32, I’m voting for Mihoko who is the last Saki character in this tournament. She is definitely likely to fall against Ayumu though.

This Labor Day will be a blast.  Labor Day 2009!!! Woooh!!!  Highest unemployment rate in 26 years!!! Yeay!!!  I think we are gasping for joy at the awesome news we have today.  Not only have we come to the nadir of nadir in labor history but I cannot possibly consider a worse scenario than what is at the moment.  This, of course, means only one thing.  The worst of worst is finally over.  (This is where I pop open a champagne bottle.)  If Fuura Kafuka were here, (pretend the previous posting counts as her presence) she would state thus.  “There can’t possibly be so many people looking for work, that only happens on television.”  Yes, Fuura, such fantasy only exists in imaginary land where fairies dwell and trolls do the b-boy dance.

Why hello there, Andrew.  Long time no see.  I thought I’d break my year long hiatus with an easy post, the old buy and brag.  This is the package I got in the mail from rightstuf today.  A mixture of my CMX, Del Rey, and Weekly Specials orders.  I might make posts like this in the future to show off my collection or for just another easy post.

Hunter x Hunter vol. 3-  I didn’t expect to enjoy this after dismissing the manga as shonen drek, but I guess it’s true what they say, all Yoshihiro Togashi manga work better as anime.  This will shoot to the top of my “to watch” list as soon as I delete some stuff from my DVR.

Astral Project vol. 4-  The fourth and final volume.  I just ordered this during the CMX manga sale and haven’t received the first three yet so this will be kept in the shrink wrap for now.

Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei vol. 3- I didn’t find the second volume to be as hilarious as the first but I’ll give it another go.

X-Men: Misfits vol. 1- The second to be released in Del Rey’s “Marvel Manga” series (the first was Wolverine: Prodigal Son).  I was excited to read this, but the shojo artwork is turning me off.

CMX Summer 2009 Preview- Yay, something for free!  Rightstuf had a deal that if you purchased $50 worth of CMX manga, you’d get a free sampler.  So I did.  Everything is still on backorder, with a couple pre-orders.
