If you’ve read any of my earlier posts, you’ll know I’ve been on the sideline for some time now.  Since last winter, I’ve been bothered by a nagging hip issue.  It kept me from racing in the spring and prevented my plans of base building over the summer.  After (re)finding my groove after a long stretch of being burned out, the willing spirit was frustrated by this weakness of the flesh.I’ve been doing various things this year, trying to resolve it.  Of course, physical therapy was in the cards.  I had x-rays and an MRI done on my hip which showed no structural damage.  I had an anesthetic injection into my hip (as part of the MRI) with no effect.  I also had a CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis (and ended up with hives all over my body from the contrast dye) which turned up nothing.In July, I switched over to Dr Z at Advanced Rehab. He started to work on my psoas which seemed to be the problem spot. After all, sitting and working at a computer all day is definitely not good for the hip flexors.  I wish I could say everything was fixed by this.  While I can’t say it’s 100%,  I can certainly say it has gotten better.  My pains subtly changed as treatments undid the secondary effects of compensation injuries, just like peeling back the layers of an onion.  Before, a few weeks of running every other day slowly built up the pain, requiring a few weeks off; now, it’s still only a mild discomfort/pain after 6 weeks.  Maybe not much, but after 6+ months, it’s a hopeful sign.

This week holds a visit to a pain specialist to check out the possibility of a nerve issue causing my problems.  Maybe it’s the light at the end of the tunnel.  Even if not, at least it seems my train is on the right track.

Next week, Zilker Relays. Sure, I won’t be burning up the course, but knowing how fellow Rogue Paul Terranova has been crushing those 100-milers, I think I can suck it up for a 2.5 mile relay leg.  Besides, I need a yardstick to measure my fitness (or current lack thereof).  Can’t think of a better way to do it than with bunch of Rogue teammates.
