It is considered to be very necessary nutrient for the body. There are several food sources of zinc and also the supplements containing it.The main sources of zinc include oysters. Its other food sources are pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, beans, many animal proteins, nuts and whole grains. Phytates is a substance which is found in cereals, legumes and grain breads might reduce the absorption of zinc.

Zinc is very useful in encouraging the biochemical reactions by exciting the activity of about 100 enzymes in the body. It is very useful in maintaining a healthy immune system, maintains the sense of smell and taste, helps in healing of the wounds, provides normal growth and development and very important for the synthesis of DNA. Zinc present in the form of salts is helpful in fighting against the pathogens. Zinc salts ingestion prevents gastrointestinal infections by providing the antimicrobial action in the GI tract. They are also useful to kill bacteria and viruses.

The deficiency of zinc in the body can result in the hair loss, skin lesions, diarrhea, poor eyesight, poor taste and smell, wastage of body tissues; break down of the body organs and even death. The abnormalities due to zinc deficiency present during the birth can lead to Acrodermatitis enteropathica. As per the Recommended Dietary Allowance, the dosage of zinc depends according to the age groups. For the children with the age of 0 to 6 months, zinc dosage should be 2.0 mg per day. For the infants with the age from 7 months to 3 years, 3 mg is recommended, 5 mg for 4 to 8 years children and 8 mg for the age group of 9 to 13 years. Its dosage is 11 mg for those of 14 years or above in males and for females, it is 9 mg.

Food banks and soup kitchens are now soliciting food from farms as opposed to supermarkets with the intention of moving away from a caloric sufficiency frame of mind, to a diet quality, seasonal variety one. Who knew that customer club cards from supermarkets actually decrease leftovers that supermarkets donate to food banks? I think this is the way to go for fresher, seasonal foods for those who need it the most.

Zinc got some press in the LA Times as being important for immunity but when taken in high doses, it can cause health problems. Zinc is near and dear to my heart (my PhD dissertation), so I have to highlight this article. Numerous study results on whether zinc can ward off colds remains inconclusive. What is known is that much of the developing world remains deficient in zinc, a mineral critical for DNA and cellular repair, would healing and immunity. In the developed world, very few are deficient in zinc, and people are overdosing on zinc lozenges and the such. Unless you are a vegetarian, eat an oyster, to get your fill of the daily allowance.

Children Now, a California-based public policy group commissioned a study, conducted out of the University of Arizona, to examine the US food and beverage industry’s marketing efforts towards children. In 2007, the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative was signed by over a dozen food industry companies to improve the nutritional quality of food and drink advertised to children. The study’s key finding is that, despite industry self-regulation, nearly three out of four, 72.5 percent, of the foods advertised on television to children are for products in the poorest nutritional category.

Haven’t you always wondered if eating less shrinks the tummy? Anecdotally, I do notice that when I eat less, my stomach seems to “look” smaller…maybe its all in the head. NY Times reported on some studies, although with small sample sizes at the question and confirmed that eating less does decrease the stomach capacity. Now, go eat those christmas cookies.

If you haven’t checked out this blog by Nabeeha Kazi Hutchins, you should. it is filled with great information with a major focus on developing world – hunger and undernutrition. Packed with lots of good information.

Zinc is an essential element for all humans. Adults need it for health while the children need it to grow. More zinc is needed by growing children, pregnant and lactating women, athletes and elders. We get zinc from food and the sources are red meat, poultry, fish, seafood, whole cereals and dairy products. A supplement should be taken if the nutritional intake is not proper.

Zinc is essential for human health in many ways. Every part of our body contains it. It is important for growth and cell division. It is especially important during pregnancy for the growing fetus. It also helps in preventing premature delivery and abnormalities in the child. It is vital in activating growth in infants and children for their weight and height. It is vital for fertility especially in males; it protects the prostate gland from infection and maintains sperm count and mobility while females it helps in treatment of menstrual problems. It has the strongest effect on our immune system which helps in fighting infections and diseases. It activates the areas of brain which receive information of taste and smell. It is very useful for skin and is used for treatment of acne, heal cuts, wounds and diaper rashes on babies. It has shown positive effect on psoriasis and can be used as an anti-inflammatory agent to soothe the skin. It is also used for preventing dandruff in hair. Deficiency of zinc in retina leads to loss of vision so it is vital for vision and protects from night blindness.

Zinc is called as spelter which is a metallic chemical element having the symbol Zn and atomic number 30. Readers should know that zinc is the first element in group 12 of the periodic table in science books. Zinc is chemically similar to magnesium because its ion is of similar size and common oxidation state is +2. Also zinc is the 24th most abundant element in the Earth’s crust containing five stable isotopes. The most exploited zinc ore is sphalerite which is a zinc sulfide. The largest exploitable deposits of zinc is found in Australia, Canada, and the United States. Zinc production includes froth flotation of the ore, roasting, and final extraction with the help of electricity .

Brass is a alloy of copper and zinc which has been used since at least the 10thcenturyBC. Impure zinc metal was not obtained in large scale until the 13th century in India and zinc the metal was unknown to Europe until the end of the 16th century. Alchemists burned zinc in air for the formation of what they called “philosopher’s wool” or “white snow”. This element was probably named by the alchemist Paracelsus after the German word Zinke. But the credit goes to German chemist Andreas Sigismund Marggraf for discovering pure metallic zinc in 1746. Corrosion-resistant zinc plating of steel is an important application for zinc. Besides this other applications are in batteries and alloys, like brass. A variety of zinc compounds are commonly used, such as zinc carbonate and zinc gluconate , zinc chloride , zinc pyrithione, zinc sulfide , and zinc methyl or zinc diethyl in the organic laboratory.

Zinc is an important mineral of “exceptional biologic and public health importance”. Zinc deficiency affects about two billion people in the developing world as it is associated with various diseases. In children zinc causes growth retardation, delayed sexual maturation, infection susceptibility, and diarrhea, contributing to the death of about 800,000 children worldwide each year. Enzymes with a zinc atom in the reactive center are widespread in biochemistry like alcohol dehydrogenase in humans. Consumption of excess zinc causes ataxia, lethargy and copper deficiency.Zinc is the fourth most common metal in use, trailing only iron, aluminium, and copper with an annual production of near about 10 megatonnes. The world’s biggest zinc producer is Nyrstar, a merger of the Australian OZ Minerals and the Belgian Umicore.

Vowing to stop speaking and downsize his house…. Gore confesses: “I am a hypocrite”
LULZ: CanadaFreePress

Usually the world’s most trusted name in journalism, Hugh Betcha, Chief of the World News Desk of the Stoos Views media empire in Wynstone, South Dakota—where the air is clean, the crime rate low, the folks vote red, and the centre still holds—is the go to guy when politicians want to disseminate breaking national and international news.

A man who walks with equal ease on both sides of the aisle in Washington, who moves seamlessly between the Arabs and Jews, and who has been known to get ‘faced with the President on cheap wine, Hugh has the trust of politicians, and movers and shakers of all stripes. But the call from Al Gore this week took him by surprise.

While sitting beside his fireplace on a cold South Dakota night, reading “No, Really, It Is Global Warming….” © 2009 Al Gore Hugh was startled by a call on his cell phone. What he heard, touched him deeply.

“I need to see you this week,” the caller pleaded. “Gotta get some things off my chest.”

“But, it is the week before Christmas,” Hugh replied, “and the connections are not good this time of year.”

“Don’t worry,” the caller said, “I will send one of my jets out there—do they have an airport at Sioux Falls?”

“Sure,” Hugh replied, “but I have four feet of global warming in my driveway and I do not know if I can make it to the road, and….”

“Not to worry,” the caller interrupted, “I can send a Hummer out to get you.”

So, as he has so many times in the past, Hugh packed a bag and prepared for the long flight to the Gore mansion. It was going to be another of those Barbara Walters things again. He could just tell. For despite Hugh’s hard nosed approach to the news, rapier wit and no nonsense style of reporting, he had a softer side and one that often brought his interviewees to tears. Like the time Obama wept like a baby in his arms one night in the White House as the President confessed that he was over his head and had no clue how to run the country; or the time Harry Reid sobbed on his shoulder when he admitted he is an inveterate #####**** who deserves to get beat in the upcoming Senatorial election in Nevada. Things like that. But Gore needed to confide in him somehow, and Hugh never refused such a request. This is what made him the most trusted name in journalism.

Arriving at the Gore Mansion, by chauffeured limousine, Hugh was ushered into the palatial Gore home which is twenty times bigger than the average American home, consumes over 200,000 kwh hours of electricity per year, and costs more than $2,000 per month to heat. Escorted into the Gore study by the butler, Hugh noticed the pictures of those memorable moments in Gore’s life. On one wall, hung pictures of his private jumbo jets which carried him to foreign lands so he could preach to them how to conserve energy and save the planet. There was The Green Machine, The Polar Bear Express, and other of his favorite personal jets. Sure, they each emitted tons of carbon each trip overseas, but it was a small price to pay for enlightening the world. There was the picture of Gore sitting at a computer keyboard on the day he invented the Internet. Or the photos of Gore cradling a baby polar bear, sobbing in vain as the bear’s mother drifted away on an ice floe that was melting rapidly. There was a prominent photo of Gore surrounded by geothermal scientists, briefing him on the fact that the earth’s core was actually hotter than the sun. On another wall hung a picture of Gore in a hard hat, visiting his zinc mines. Hugh’s inspection of the room was interrupted by the Almost President as he walked into the room.

“Sit down please,” Gore invited, “thanks for coming.” It was obvious from his puffy eyes that the former Vice President, Almost President, and Inventor of the Internet had been sobbing.

“What’s up?” Hugh asked, concerned.

“I am feeling a little guilty I guess.” Gore began. “You know, this environmental mumbo jumbo I have been preaching.”

“Yes…”

“Well, I have decided that I am a hypocrite, and it is time to come clean.”

“Why?”

Al Gore's 10,000 sq. ft. mansion in Nashville, TN

“Confession is good for the soul I guess. It occurred to me, I am living here in this huge mansionthat consumes more energy that most villages in Kenya—the country of Obama’s birth—and I am feeling a little guilty about this. Then there are my jets—they drop more carbon into the atmosphere than twenty coal fired energy plants in China—where I have lectured them on cleaning up their air. They consume enough fuel in one week to power 1,000 American automobiles for a year. I own certain zinc mining interests, and those strip mines pollute more water than a chemical plant. Then there are the speeches—I have given 3,000 speeches in the past ten years on global warming and, according to my friends at the EPA, I have exhaled enough CO2 to kill 324 polar bears. My own toxic emissions equal the combined flatus of 20 cattle per year. Put simply, it has become apparent to me that I may be the biggest single polluter on the planet. Lisa Jackson at the EPA has informed me privately that EPA tests show I am the single largest polluter per capita in the United States. In fact, the EPA has threatened to enjoin me if I do not make some changes. Put simply, I am a hypocrite and the single biggest threat to the environment in this country. I am a one man freaking Love Canal and Three Mile Island all in one.”

“So, what do you intend to do about this?”

“I am going to make some lifestyle changes.”

“Such as…”

“Beginning with the new year, I am going to stop making speeches on the environment for a period of one year. This should slow the rate of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere and slow the melting of the polar ice cap—which will, according to my research, melt away in 5 years—as I said recently. “

“What else?”

“I am going to stop flying on my private jets, and, if I fly anywhere, it will be commercially, and I will do something I have never done in my life.”

“And that is?”

“Travel with the common people. I might even risk it and travel coach.”

“What else?”

“I am going to stop writing books about global warming—which will at once save millions of trees which are brutally cut down in order to print this drivel, and also cut down on the misinformation about global warming. I mean they have fudged that data so much that I do not even believe my own B.S. any more.”

“And?”

“Tipper is going to start hanging our clothes outside on a clothes line, just like the common folks do. I remember that Barbara Streisand lectured Americans on Earth Day about ten years ago, that they should hang their clothes out to dry in order to save electricity. That really sounds like a great idea and I have built Tipper a clothes line right next to the double wide….”

“The double wide?” Hugh asked.

“The one we are moving into when we sell the mansion. Who needs to live like we are? I want to see how the common folk live and set an example for the rest of the world.”

YES, IT’S LULZ.

Has anyone heard doom-and-gloom stories about the potential health dangers of teeny nano particles in their sunscreen? Well I have been concerned about that too so have been keeping my eye on a study by Environmental Working Group. Their latest report says that they expected to find some nasty issues with sunscreens containing nano ingredients BUT.. they actually find that nano products are much safer than any other sunscreen, and in fact they recommend sunscreens containing nano ingredients. As well as containing less harmful ingredients, they give 20% more protection from UVA than any other sunscreen.

I’m singing the winter blues… and it came to me in the form of a Katy Perry song!

I’m hot and then cold
I’m yes and then no
I’m in and then out
I’m up and then down

My 11-year-old son has a cold. And, loving his mama so much, he decided to share it with me. My immune system is very low. Ergo, I catch anything that anyone has to throw at me. I must stand there in the forefront with my baseball glove in hand waiting for the next foul ball. So far, during this awful flu & cold season, my record is 2-2. Damn I’m good.

The flu and cold season usually starts in October and doesn’t end until sometime in April. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the common cold or the flu. But, there are some things that you can do to help boost your immune system before you get sick and even when you do get sick.

Foods that can boost your immune system before you get sick

Garlic has the ability to increase your resistance to infection and stress. During the holiday season most people feel some sort of stress. Let’s face it, when you’re stressed, you definitely feel worse. Right? Of course I’m right. Try adding more garlic to your diet during this cold and flu season and see how much better you feel.

Cheese and other dairy products have conjugated linoleic acid, a natural component of dairy fat that have antioxidant and anti-cancer properties.

Yogurt and other cultured milk products contain probiotics which help boost your immune system. Probiotics are live microorganisms that help fight the bad organisms.

Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits and fruit juices, can help boost your immune system. You can also find Vitamin C supplements over the counter. Make sure you check with your Dr. before taking any supplements.

Zinc, found in the meat group and supplements, plays a major role in boosting the immune system.

Foods that help you to heal when you’re sick

Ginger root used in small portions can help the common cold. It induces sweating and decreases nausea and vomiting. You can add fresh ground ginger root to your tea with a little bit of honey.

Honey has powerful antimicrobial properties. A teaspoonful topped with lemon juice every couple of hours does wonders for a sore throat.

Chicken soup helps with nasal congestion, warms you up inside, and tastes great!

Eating well balanced meals is important at all times. But, more-so when you’re sick.

Other things to do to help boost your immune system

Eat a well-balanced diet

Take your daily vitamins

Wash hands regularly, and then wash again.

Exercise regularly

Decrease stress as much as possible. I know, easier said than done.

Drink lots of fluids, ie. water, juice

Cut back on unhealthy habits such as alcohol intake and smoking.

These are just suggestions and are not meant to override a doctor’s advice. You know your own body. Therefore, if your cold or flu symptoms persist or worsen, CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN.

The journal Archives of Ophthalmology recently reported that having reduced plasma antioxidant levels and increased exposure to sunlight increases the risk of neovascular, or advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

In a recent study (titled the European Eye Study), over 4,400 participants over age 65 were analyzed for the presence of macular degeneration. Their blood plasma was evaluated for vitamins C and E, the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, and the mineral zinc. Each individual also completed a questionnaire regarding their typical exposure to sunlight. This was used to estimate blue light exposure from visible light, which is known to contribute to the development of macular degeneration.

Early stage macular degeneration was detected in 2,182 participants, and 101 had the advanced form of the disease. The research found no association between blue light exposure and early macular degeneration. However, among participants in the lowest quartile (25 percent) of serum vitamin C, zeaxanthin, vitamin E and zinc, exposure to blue light significantly increased the risk of advanced macular degeneration.

You would be surprised to know that most of us do not get enough of the simplest vitamins that our b

You would be surprised to know that most of us do not get enough of the simplest vitamins that our body needs. Vitamin deficiencies are most often seen in those with overly restrictive diets, like vegetarians, for example. If you are vegetarian or are thinking about becoming vegetarian there are 5 vitamins you should be concerned about not getting enough of: Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Calcium, Iron, and Zinc. Not sure which type of vegetarian you are?

Here are the types:

Pescetarian: you eat no red meat or poultry but you do eat fish

Lacto-Ovo vegetarian: you eat no red meat, poultry, or fish, but you do consume dairy products and eggs

Vegan: you eat plant foods only

Depending on which restrictive diet you have, you will need to educate yourself on which foods to eat to ensure that you are getting the proper nutrients. B12 is necessary for proper functioning of your nervous system and without it you can develop anemia or bouts of irritability. Here’s the kicker for vegetarians, B12 is the only nutrient that is NOT found in plants…kinda goes against everything you believe in if you don’t eat meat, right? So if you do not eat meat, fish, eggs, or dairy products, make sure you are getting B12 through fortification in soy milk, vegetable stock, veggieburger mixes and breakfast cereals. Lacto-ovo vegetarians get B12 from dairy and eggs so they are not at risk for deficiency.

Vitamin D and Calcium are an EVERYBODY issue and not just reserved for vegetarians. As you know Vitamin D regulates calcium absorption and calcium is the main function of your skeleton and it also regulates your blood pressure. Without enough of vitamin D you fall apart literally as your bones get spongy and soft. Vitamin D deficiency can also be linked to higher rates of diabetes and cancer as well. With a deficiency of calcium your body will sacrifice calcium from other parts of your body, causing brittle bones and leading to osteoporosis. WebMD says that over 10 million Americans over the age of 50 have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Did you know that soda, salt, and meat, which more of us consume more today then let’s say 30 years ago, actually all pull calcium from your body? As women hit their 30’s, calcium will be ultra important to avoid getting osteoporosis later in life as calcium starts to deplete. When was the last time you remember having 2 or 3 servings of anything containing calcium or Vitamin D in a single day? My point exactly.

Now that you are completely horrified let’s talk about what you can eat to load up on these important two vitamins.

Vitamin D is found only in a handful of animal products, like cod, salmon, and tuna. If you don’t eat fish, Vitamin D is found a little bit in eggs, margarine, and cheese. If you are Vegan, fortified vitamin D can be found in soy milk and cereals. Another source of vitamin D is sun exposure. Our body actually synthesizes a non-active vitamin D that can be activated by being exposed to the sun. A higher number of Hispanic and African Americans are deficient in vitamin D because their skin is darker and they aren’t getting enough sun exposure to activate vitamin D in their bodies. 5-15 minutes in the sun for 4-6 times a week should do your body good.

Calcium is well- known in dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt. Obviously, if you have dietary restrictions you can try alternative such as calcium-fortified soy or rice milk or even OJ. Other sources of calcium include the dark green vegetables that we all hated as kids and hopefully are willing to try and enjoy as adults like collard greens and brussel sprouts. Other more reasonable sources can be broccoli, green beans, oranges, and tofu.

Iron deficiency poses more a concern for women and if you’re pregnant, that makes it a double whammy. Iron carries oxygen through-out our red blood cells and helps regulate temperature. The main deficiency of iron is anemia but this doesn’t happen until you’re extremely deficient. There is no higher incidence of anemia in vegetarians, however they tend to have lower iron stores causing them to be higher in moderate deficiency. Infants and teenagers need a lot more iron than adults. As infants are coming off their iron-fortified cereals and formula and teenage boys become picky eaters when they hit puberty, iron deficiency can pose a problem. Vegetarians have a hard time absorbing iron because they mainly eat non-heme iron, found in plant protein, that is less easily absorbed than the iron found in meats. Whole grains, fortified cereal, raisins, beans, potatoes with skin, and enriched pastas can all be enjoyed by the vegetarian. Meat lovers can get their sources of iron from beef, shrimp, turkey, oysters, and mussels. Just a note with iron, if you drink coffee, tea, or red wine (like I do) then this can decrease your iron absorption. Whole grains, soy products, and vegetables containing calcium such as spinach and sweet potatoes all take away iron from your body too. However, vitamin C enhances iron absorption so try combining broccoli, tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, oranges, cantaloupes, strawberries, or grapefruit with any iron-rich food to maximize absorption.

Do you get sick easily or does it take a while for a cut to heal? If this is the case, you may be low on zinc. Plants have zinc but it’s harder for the body to absorb it, so if you eat little or no meat than you may not be getting enough of this vitamin. Meat, dairy, legumes, whole grains, cereals, nuts, and seeds all contain zinc. Citric acid in fruits and lactic acid in dairy enhance zinc absorption so load up on these when you eat your iron dish.

Hidden vitamin deficiencies is not just a concern for vegetarians. Anyone can be at risk for not getting enough of the vitamins are body needs to keep healthy. The keys to success in making sure you are getting all your vitamins is to make sure you are eating enough and plenty of variety.

Iron and steel are ferrous metals and corrodes as the time passes. In galvanization these metals are coated with zinc.

In galvanization process, hot dipped galvanization method is applied. A layer of molten zinc appears on the ferrous metal.

Above is a computer generated image and a post construction photograph of Zone Architects’s Queensferry Addition. This zinc clad addition to one of a series of grand villas lining the edge of the Firth of Forth is a rare change to the usual sandstone structures erected in the city whilst also solving the issues of poor kitchen and service facilities and lack of connection to the garden. The real success though is the framed view of the Forth Railway Bridge, a beautiful cantilevered bridge which connects the City of Edinburgh with neighboring Fife.

I was employed by Zone Architects 01/2008 – 09/2008. During this period I worked on this project, including producing the computer generated image.

YESTERDAY ~ these were my best friends: So I was feeling under the weather yesterday, like I was co

YESTERDAY ~ these were my best friends:

So I was feeling under the weather yesterday, like I was coming down with something, so I put into play my secret remedy! This works for me every single time!

The most important part of my secret is Zinc, whenever I feel like I am coming down with something I always take Zinc, it boosts the immune system and helps your body fight whatever is going on. The key is that you must take it on a full stomach.

The second step is always a cup of tea. Tea cures everything, and even if it doesn’t it makes me feel good!

The third step is to relax. For me that is a good movie and some sort of needle and yarn.

TODAY ~

So yesterday my secret remedy worked because I feel 100% better. I did accomplish something yesterday:

I made the above scrubbie (aka Tawashi) and a dishcloth. I made the scrubbie with acrylic yarn using this pattern, and the dishcloth was made using cotton and single crocheting in the back loops. I used a small hook so that it came out very tight.

I gave them each a loop so that I could hang them to dry.

I have used green, non-toxic cleaners for a long time and I like the idea that I can use a dishcloth for a couple of days and then throw it in the washer and reuse it. I have never liked sponges, they just scream germs to me. So even though I am going to move onto something more complicated in my knitting and crocheting for today I am super excited that I am going to make one for each day of the week!

Here they are after the morning dishes. I am one of those people that never has dirty dishes in the sink. I do the dishes as I cook and then just stack the plates after the meal. I like to walk into a clean kitchen. I think it is so much easier to cook or get a snack when you start with a clean slate sink!

TOMORRROW ~

So tomorrow is my last day off before starting my new job, so I will make sure the house is in order and the laundry is all done. I will have less time for my crafts but I will have more money for lovely yarns! Oh, the trade off!
