La Eurocopa es un campeonato de selecciones masculinas nacionales de fútbol. Es organizado por la UEFA cada cuatro años. En su edición inaugural, el torneo se denominó Copa de Naciones de Europa o Copa de Europa pero en 1968 recibió su denominación actual.

La competición fue fruto de un francés, Henri Delaunay, secretario de la Federación Francesa de Fútbol. Fue quien comenzó a barajar la idea en 1927 pero hasta 1954 no fue cuando empezó a ser una realidad. Algunas selecciones se mostraron reacias a la competición y se consiguió instaurar en el Congreso de la UEFA en 1957, dos años después de la muerte de Delaunay. En su memoria el trofeo que se entrega al ganador lleva su nombre.

Hasta la Euro de 1976 solo participaban cuatro países. Entre 1980 hasta 1996 el número aumentó a ocho. Actualmente son 16 pero en la Euro de 2014 se aumentará a 24 los países que la disputarán.

EUROCOPA FRANCIA 1960.

La competición se dividía en una ronda clasificatoria y una fase final que se disputa en el país anfitrión. Competían un total de 17 selecciones. En esta faltaron países como Italia, Alemania Federal o Inglaterra. A la fase final llegan la Unión Soviética, Checoslovaquia, Francia y Yugoslavia.

En la final ganó la selección soviética (2-1) y destacó el papel del portero soviético Lev Yashin que fue como un muro frente al equipo yugoslavo.

España participó en la ronda clasificatoria pero el General Franco impidió que la selección soviética entrara en España y quedó eliminada de la competición.

EUROCOPA ESPAÑA 1964

Se mantuvo el mismo formato que en la anterior edición. Esta edición la disputaron 29 selecciones.

En la final España se impuso a la Unión Soviética (2-1). La final se disputó en el Santiago Bernabéu. A los seis minutos Jesús Pereda marcó el primer gol del partido, en seguida la selección soviética marcó el empate y a seis minutos del final del partido Marcelino con el memorable cabezazo le dio su primera Eurocopa a la selección española.

EUROCOPA ITALIA 1968

El formato se renovó y se constituyó el formato que ha llegado a la actualidad. En esta edición debutó la República Federal de Alemania con un gran Gerd Müller.

La final la disputaron Italia contra Yugoslavia. Después del tiempo reglamentario el resultado era de empate a uno y la final se resolvió dos días después con un nuevo partido que ganó Italia 2-0.

España cayó en cuartos de final frente a Inglaterra por 2-1.

EUROCOPA BÉLGICA 1972

La fase preliminar se dividió en ocho grupos con cuatro equipos en cada uno. La gran favorita para ganar el título era la República Federal Alemana.

La final se disputó entre la Unión Soviética y la Alemania Federal (3-0) con un gran protagonismo Beckenbauer y Müller.

España en esta ocasión no consiguió pasar la fase de grupos.

EUROCOPA YUGOSLAVIA 1976

Esta Eurocopa ha sido y será eternamente recordada por un penalti que lanzó Antonin Panenka y bautizó con su nombre una nueva modalidad de tirar una pena máxima. Los checos eran los favoritos en esta ocasión aunque el torneo contó con nombres como el de Johan Cruyff o John Toshack.

En la final se encontraron Checoslovaquia y la Alemania Federal. El partido tuvo que resolverse en la tanda de penaltis con el mítico penalti de Panenka que dio a Checoslovaquia la Eurocopa.

España cayó en cuartos de final frente a la Alemania Federal.

EUROCOPA ITALIA 1980

En esta ocasión la UEFA dobló el número de participantes, ocho países entraban en la fase final del torneo. Fue la primera ocasión en la que el equipo anfitrión se clasificaba directamente. Destacó la presencia de Kevin Keegan o Bernard Schuster.

La final fue disputada por Alemania Federal y Bélgica. Partido en el que se impuso la Alemania Federal por 2-1.

España no pasó de la fase de grupos.

EUROCOPA FRANCIA 1984

Destacó la presencia del mejor centro de campo con Michel Platini que era la estrella de la Juventus. España quedó primera de grupo y en las semifinales derrotó a Dinamarca en la tanda de penaltis y llegó a la final contra Francia.

En la final entre Francia y España, los galos se adelantaron de la mano de Platini y en el minuto 90 Bruno Bellone certificó la victoria para los galos.

EUROCOPA ALEMANIA FEDERAL 1988

Entre los grandes favoritos para ganar el trofeo estaban Francia, Italia y Alemania. Con la eliminación de Francia, Italia y Alemania se repartían el favoritismo.

En esta ocasión debutó en la fase final la selección de Irlanda. Jugadores como Paolo Maldini, Frank Rijkaard y Ruud Gullit destacaron en la competición.

En la final se enfrentaron la Unión Soviética y Países Bajos, pese a todo pronóstico. La competición la ganaron los Países Bajos con goles de Gullit y Van Basten.

España no superó la fase de grupos.

EUROCOPA SUECIA 1992

En esta edición la selección de Yugoslavia estaba clasificada para disputar el torneo pero debido a la guerra de los Balcanes fue excluida y su puesto lo ocupó Dinamarca. Destacó la presencia de la selección de la Comunidad de Estados Independientes (CEI) que surgió después de la disolución de la Unión Soviética.

En la final se encontraron las selecciones de Dinamarca y Alemania. Dinamarca no notó la ausencia de Michael Laudrup ya que se impuso 2-0.

España no llegó a clasificarse para la fase final del campeonato.

EUROCOPA INGLATERRA 1996

En esta ocasión el número de equipos se aumentó a 16 que estaban divididos en cuatro grupos de cuatro equipos de los cuales los dos primeros pasaban a cuartos de final, fase que introdujeron en esa ocasión. Aparte de esas innovaciones también se decidió que las fases eliminatorias se decidieran con el “gol de oro”.

En la final se vieron las caras Alemania y la República Checa. Alemania una vez ya unificada consiguió su primer título europeo por 2-1.

España cayó en cuartos de final en la tanda de penaltis frente a Inglaterra.

EUROCOPA BÉLGICA Y PAÍSES BAJOS 2000

En  este campeonato destacó el centro del campo francés que consiguió hacerse con el título, futbolistas como Zinedine Zidane, Didier Deschamps y Patrick Vieira.

En la final Francia se enfrentó a Italia. Los galos se impusieron 2-1 con un gol de Trézéguet en el tiempo de descuento.

España cayó en cuartos frente a Francia con el famoso penalti fallado por Raúl.

EUROCOPA PORTUGAL 2004

Fue la Eurocopa de la sorpresa. Las denominadas “selecciones pequeñas” se impusieron a las grandes potencias futbolísticas.

La final fue un partido muy igualado entre Portugal y Grecia por 1-0. El gol fue obra de Charisteas tras un saque de esquina.

España no consiguió superar la fase de grupos.

EUROCOPA AUSTRIA Y SUIZA 2008

Llegó la hora de que España diera un golpe sobre la mesa del futbol internacional reivindicando la presencia de los “locos bajitos” que controlaban el balón y jugaban al toque.

El punto de inflexión de la selección española fue en cuartos frente a la selección italiana a la que se impusieron en una emocionante tanda de penaltis con un notable Casillas y un sobresaliente Cesc Fábregas que marcó el penalti que nos clasificó a las semifinales. Durante todo el torneo la presencia de David Villa fue destacable y terminó como máximo goleador de la competición.

En la final, España se impusó a la selección de Alemania con un gol de Fernando Torres y un gran control del equipo español.

La próxima Eurcopoca se celebrará en 2012 en Polonia y Ucrania. ¿Quién ganará esta vez? Contaremos su historia.

Why do I always type a little blurb here? It never really says anything; I just feel weird diving straight into the match results themselves without any preamble. It’s too… impersonal that way. So hello, hi, here we are, so let’s get down to it:

Calcio:

AS Roma Totti 3-1 Bari – Romanisti always repeat one thing when Er Pupone is sidelined: No Totti, no Party. But sometimes we get so caught up in our own negativity that we forget the flip-side of that equation: Totti = party. Er Capitano made his return today against Bari, back from over a month out after going into knee surgery earlier in the season. And just to remind us why we miss him when he’s gone, he scored a hattrick. In the first half hour. The first came on 7′ – a spot kick after Jean-François Gillet downed Mirko Vucinic in the area. Then, only 7 minutes later, Totti launched a searing free-kick into the back of the net to make it 2-0. On 28′, he scored a world-class – and seemingly impossible – goal, beating Bari’s defense, Gillet and firing an acute-angle shot into the far corner. Beauty. Roma did their usual thing in the second half, sitting comfortably back on their large lead and letting i Galletti tire themselves out. However, the visitors finally pulled one back when youngster Marco Andreolli nodded the ball into his own net on 73′. A bit of a blemish, but a pretty good party nonetheless. To Gillet’s credit, he was outstanding for most of the match (those stretches when Totti was not destroying his self esteem), as was Julio Sergio, who was very solid behind the Roman back four. Mirko Vucinic was phenomenal, back to his old self again, while the only real black spot for Roma was Nicolas Burdisso, who was an absolute horrorshow at right-back. Also, the own goal was unfortunate. But all in all, a very good party with Er Capitano back at the helm. I can’t wait until we get Danielino back – then we can really party.

Inter 3-1  Bologna – The Inter Offside webpage referred to this match as a ‘Mortadella Speedbump’ — that pretty much sums it up for me. The reigning champions probably felt as if they could simply stroll into the Stadio Dall’Ara and come back out with three easy points, and their hosts failed to prove them wrong. There was a bit of tension early in the match; Diego Milito put Inter ahead on 22′ off of a corner from Maicon, only for Marcelo Zalayeta to equalize within 60 seconds, smashing the ball past Julio Cesar and into the top corner. The next 20 minutes saw both teams get really into the game, but Mario Balotelli should have put his side ahead when he beat the Bologna backline and dummied ‘keeper Emiliano Viviano – only to waste enough time that Viviano was able to get up and rob him of his much belated shot. One could see Jose Mourinho rise from his bench, flailing in anger. However, Supermario was able to atone for his sins just before the half; another Maicon corner saw the young striker rise powerfully in the air and head home to make it 2-1 for the Nerazzurri. He picked up a knock in the process, however, and was subbed off for Samuel Eto’o, who made a rare start on the bench. The visitors would make their lead more comfortable midway through the second half, with Esteban Cambiasso, who was in excellent form, burying a left-foot strike on 72′. To be honest, the hosts never looked like they were going to get back into the game, and Inter cruised to a comfortable win over the Emiliani.

AC Milan 4-3 Cagliari – It was a bit of a rollercoaster ride in the San Siro this afternoon, but i Rossoneri came out on top. Clarence Seedorf gave the home side an early lead on 5′, but gli Isolani weren’t interested in falling behind and Alessandro Matri equalized just 3 minutes later. The visitors would take the lead on 30′ when Andrea Lazzari found himself completely unmarked at Milan’s back post and gave his side a 2-1 lead. This time though, it was Milan’s turn to come from behind, as Marco Borriello and Alexandre Pato bagged a pair of goals in quick succession to put their side up 3-2 by the 39th minute. Pato’s goal was particularly nice, a rocket-powered blast into the top shelf which sent the San Siro crowd into an uproar. Milan would further consolidate their lead after the break, with Ronaldinho stepping up to the spot after Borriello had been felled in the area and burying it, sending Federico Marchetti the wrong way. He seems to score all of his goals that way, doesn’t he? More on him later. Cagliari was able to reduce Milan’s lead to a single goal when Nenê beat Dida on 68′, but Milan would hold onto their rather precarious lead and edge their visitors 4-3 in what turned out to be an exciting goalfest. Now, Ronaldinho. He was quite possibly – I’d almost say easily – the man of the match; back to his Barcelona form and full of tricks and flicks. That he only got onto the scoresheet via PK is misleading, as he was the creative force behind Milan’s devastating offense all night. That being said, their defending was quite shoddy, and against a better team (no offense, Cagliari, I like you guys) they might have come away with a rather different result. That being said, an excellent high-scoring match to put il Diavolo into 3rd place. Who says Serie A is boring?

Juventus 1-0 Udinese – Oh that’s right, Juventini say Serie A is boring. Because Juve is boring. I Bianconeri edged, well, i Bianconeri in Turin to keep their Scudetto hopes alive tonight. After the kickoff, it was all Juventus; Diego and Mauro Camoranesi both came close in the first quarter of an hour. After that though, the game went into a bit of a lull, and neither side looked dangerous (or did anything important) before the halftime break – unless you count a Udinese goal rightly disallowed for offside. After the restart, it was once again Juventus who set the pace, and this time it paid off. Summer signing Martin Cácares set up summer signing Fabio Grosso, who beat Samir Handanovic with ease to put the home side up 1-0 on 51′. Udinese fought hard throughout the remainder of the half, and both Handanovic and Gigi Buffon were called upon to make class saves, but ultimately the most exciting thing to happen before the fulltime whistle was Alessandro Del Piero’s appearance as a substitute. Juventino or not, you gotta love that guy.

Football:

A hattrick? No, that was just a warm-up.

Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic – Stop the press! What in God’s name do they put in the water in Tottenham? The Spurs recorded the second-biggest Premiership blowout in history at White Hart Lane over a hapless Wigan Athletic, with Jermain Defoe grabbing 5 himself in the second half. Peter Crouch opened the scoring for the home side on 9′, and believe it or not, that was it for the first half. Defoe got started right away after the break though, netting on 51′ and 54′, before Paul Scharner (who may have also pulled a Thierry Henry) pulled one back for the Latics to make it 3-1 on 57′. Defoe wasn’t done yet though, and to complete his hattrick restored the Spurs 3-goal margin just seconds later. Aaron Lennon got in on the action with a goal of his own on 64′, and then Jermain Defoe topped off his hattrick with a brace on 69′ and 87′. Chris Kirkland put the ball into his own net on 88′ to make it 8-1, and then Niko Kranjcar scored in the 4th minute of stoppage time to make the scoreline a whopping 9-1. To put this into perspective, didn’t table-toppers Chelsea lose to Wigan this season? Holy shit, dude.

Chelsea 4-0 Wolverhampton – Speaking of Chelsea, Carlo Ancelotti’s men took part in a rout of their own this weekend, though it seems rather paltry in comparison with their London neighbours’ rather excessive beatdown. The Wolves simply had no chance at Stamford Bridge, and with Florent Malouda opening the scoring with a 25-yard strike on 5′, it seemed a cricket score was imminent. Michael Essien furthered that notion, bagging a brace within a 10 minute span by finding the back of the Wolves’ net on 12′ and 22′. The visitors simply had no response to the dominant Chelsea play, and their ill-advised 2-5-3 formation left plenty of gaps for the Blues to exploit. The teams went into the half with the score 3-0, but not before Sylvain Ebanks-Blake forced a class save from Petr Cech. As the game progressed, Wolverhampton reverted to a more solid 4-4-2, it was not enough to stop Joe Cole from scoring his first Premiership goal in over a year, making the score 4-0. Another quite impressive blowout/shutout from Ancelotti’s men, but until they score 9 goals I think they’ll feel that their crosstown rivals have the upper hand. Then again, they’re leading the league, so who cares about the Spurs?

Liverpool 2-2- Manchester City – Every time a Koppite cries, and angel get its wings. Or so I’ve been led to believe. Either way, both the Reds and the Blues (no, no, other Reds. Other Blues too.) dropped points and further away from the top 4 with a 4-goal draw at Anfield on Saturday. Martin Skrtel gave the home side the lead on 50′, only for Emmanuel Adebayor and Stephen Ireland to respond on 69′ and 76′ respectively to give the Citizens a 2-1 lead. A loss at this stage in the competition would have meant disaster for the Scousers, but luckily Yossi Benayoun cut any Mancunian celebrations short by responding with a goal of his own on 77′ to equalize and make it 2-2. And 2-2 the score would remain. This result is neither a complete disaster for Mark Hughes or Rafa Benitez, but you gotta think that the two of them, and their grossly underperforming squads, have gotta be feeling a little uncomfortable right now.

Manchester Utd 3-0 Everton – As for the other Reds and Blues of Manchester and Liverpool, a draw was not in the cards. The Red Devils trounced the Toffeemakers at Old Trafford to stay within five points of Chelsea in the table. Darren Fletcher opened the scoring for the homeside on 35′ with a beautiful goal that has been compared (somewhat hyperbolically) to the work of Zinedine Zidane. After the half Michael Carrick and Luis Antonio Valencia would add a goal each, while David Moyes’ men could do little but keep the scoreline respectable. I gotta say, the Merseyside derby is going to be downright depressing this year…

Sunderland 1-0 Arsenal – Oh, Arsenal. The Gooners had gone over a dozen games without a loss, but as usual Arsene Wenger’s men got a little too close to the sun and their wings simply burned up. Also, they had a lot of injuries. The Londoners put in an unfocused and ramshackle performance against a determined Sunderland side who clearly wanted the result more. And they got it. Sunderland simply rode out wave after wave of potent Arsenal attacking play, though admittedly, it didn’t seem like the Gunners wanted to do much other than controlling the ball in midfield. On 71′, the home side finally got their chance and Darren Bent buried it to make the score 1-0 for the Black Cats. Wenger’s men had simply no will to get back into the game (perhaps their minds were occupied with thoughts of next week’s clash against Chelsea) and ultimately fell to a steely Sunderland side. This is the second time this year that the Black Cats have beaten a top 4 side – and this time it can’t even be blamed on a beach ball.

Futbol:

Real Madrid 1-0 Racing Santander – Well, Los Galacticos are still without their biggest star – Cristiano Ronaldo – and they’re still not playing as ‘Galacticos’ perhaps should, but they’re finally where Galacticos should be: on top. Gonzalo Higuaín provided the difference that Manuel Pellegrini’s men needed to take down mid-table residents Racing Santander, with a strike from close range on 22′. Both sides had second-half goals disallowed for offsides, with both Karim Benzema and Sergio Canales putting the ball into the back of the net only to be notified by the referee that they need not celebrate. As has been the norm this year, Madrid did not completely convince, but their narrow victory was nevertheless enough to see them go top of the table for the first time this season after Barcelona picked up a similarly unconvincing result in Bilbao.

Because Bear Country is more frightening than Basque Country.

Barcelona 1-1 Athletic Bilbao – Treble Champions they may be, but at times this season Barcelona have failed to look the part. They faltered again in their title race during this weekend’s trip to Basque Country. Though many of their starting 11, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, were out with knocks, one could still expect Barcelona to produce a result against midtable opponents such as Bilbao. Early in the match, Los Leones put pressure on their visitors, peppering them with corners and free kicks, while Barca looked simply content to play on the counter. Soon however, Barca wrested control of possession from their hosts, and began to look like the side to score, though when it came to finishing they came up empty – at least in the first half. However, after the restart the Blaugrana got off on the right foot, with Daniel Alves running on to the end of a perfect throughball from Xavi and finding the back of Bilbao’s net. Athletic immediately responded by bringing Toquero into the game; a move that would prove very effective as the substitute would equalize for the home side within 10 minutes of coming onto the pitch, running onto a long ball and smashing it home. All that was left to do for Bilbao was to park the bus and ride out the waves of Barcelona attacks – which they did – in order to gain a point and drop the reigning champions down to second place. What has happened to Pep Guardiola’s men?

Fußball:

Bayern München 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen – Well, Die Roten haven’t sunk any further into their slump, but they haven’t de-slumped either, achieving a draw against league-leading Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz-Arena this weekend. Mario Gomez and Stephan Kießling each netted for their respective sides early on in the match; both goals came within the first 15 minutes of play. Bayern started off energetically, with their aggressive attack leading to Mario Gomez’s opener on 8′, which he sidefooted in on an advantage play after Miroslav Klose was fouled. However, their visitors soon caught up to them in pace and were able to exploit the home side’s defensive weaknesses; Kießling easily beat the offside trap and slotted the ball coolly past Hans-Jörg Butt to make it all square on 14′. Each team had spells of pacy and bright looking attack, but neither could capitalize during those stretches; Leverkusen keeper Rene Adler saved his side time and time again with world class saves to prevent Bayern from getting out in front. Even Thomas Müller, who has so often been Bayern’s ace-in-the-hole this season proved ineffectual, and was subbed in the second half for Ivica Olic, returning from a lengthy injury layoff. The chances petered out towards the end of the game, and a 1-1 draw it would remain – a result that sees Bayer reclaim 1st and Bayern languish in 7th.

Werder Bremen 6-0 SC Freiburg – Poor Freiburg. On more than a few occasions this season they have found themselvesin situations where they are simply out of their depth. The home side suffered a humbling defeat to Die Grün-Weißen in their own Badenova-Stadion, falling 6-0 in an all-out slaughter. Hugo Almeida opened the scoring for the visitors on 33′, Marko Marin added a second on 55′, Almeida doubled his money on 57′, Mesut Özil netted on 67′, Naldo on 73′ and substitute Markus Rosenberg made it 6-0 with 8 minutes left to play. Freiburg once again made a case for having the worst defense in the Bundesliga (they have the highest number of goals against; 30) and sit 13th in the league table, while this victory propels Werder Bremen to second, just a point behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen. I guess the English aren’t the only ones who know how to have a good blowout!

Wspaniały David nie odpuszcza. Już zapowiada walkę o miejsce w samolocie lecącym w czerwcu 2010 do Afryki. Uda mu się, nie ze względu na formę, ale na status i przeszłość z selekcjonerem Fabio Capello. Ten raz odsunął go od składu w Realu Madryt w sezonie 2006/07, ale gdy zaczął mu się palić grunt pod nogami musiał się odrobinę upokorzyć i gwizdnąć z powrotem na Beckhama.

David objawia się także w pojedynku ze Stevenem Gerrardem. Gdy Zidane dalej szuka graczy do swojej jedenastki, obaj Angole rywalizują w… zobaczcie sami.

Federasi juga tidak membantah kesalahan dari wasit sehingga gol Perancis yang menyamakan kedudukan tetap disahkan.” Demikian pernyataan dari federasi.

Two Serie A titles, One La Liga championship. One Champions league and two Spanish Super Cups. One World Cup and one European Chamopinship. Even this fine collection of winners’ medals cannot do justice to the icon that is Zinedine Zidane.

World player of the year in 1998, 2000 and 2003, Ballon D’or winner in 1998, the genius of Zidane means he is the only footballer of our generation who can be held in the same regard as the royalty of the modern game – Pele, Maradonna and Cryff

A number 10 in the purest sense, Zidane would show his class in his swansong, the 2006 World Cup.

The headbutt on Matterazi aside, the ageing, and compared to previous generations,  poor French team were propelled almost single handedly towards the final by Zidane’s ability. Games against Spain and Brazil in particular almost turned into a highlight reel for the man from Marseille all by themselves. Pirouettes, step overs, flicks and feints, Zidane seemed to be showcasing his locker of tricks against the best players in the world all over again.

The 2002 champions league final at Hamden park was where  Zidane produced his crowning moment – his greatest piece of individual work. The best player in the world, on the biggest stage, scoring a quite simply spectacular goal.

Roberto Carlos gets down the Leverkusen right and loops the ball over to the edge of the area. Zidane, waiting on the edge, watches the ball like a hawk stalking its prey. The ball seems be in the air for what seems like an eternity.

The man swivels his body on his right foot, and, with his weaker left, sends a crashing volley into the top corner of the net – past the despairing dive of keeper Hans-Jorg Butt. It was a moment of remarkable beauty and elegance in the biggest game in club football.

Born to Algerian parents, Zizou, along with other members of the winning 1998 world cup team such as Marcel Desailly, Patrick Veira and llian Thuram, also come to symbolize France as a multinational country – a country which would look upon as those who emigrated their former colonies with fondness and acceptance – not suspicion and fear

Tecnically outstanding, the effortless nature of his football appeared to make him almost like a dancer – gliding and swivelling past stretched midfields and the desperate lunges of defenders.

This side of his game though is not to say Zidane couldn’t handle it in the heat of the midfield battle. He was sent off 12 times in his career, including  in the 1998 world cup group stages against Saudi Arabia. This would not be his only impact on the tournament with his two goals in the final setting up the steam rolling of an out of sorts Brazil side. And of course there is the Matterazi headbutting, which somewhat left a sour taste in the mouth, after he became only the fourth player to score in two different world cup finals.

Since his retirement in 2006 , Zidane has been appointed as advisor to Real Madrid President Florentino Perez and no doubt teaching his four sons (one of which Enzo, who is named after Zizou’s favourite ever player, Uruguayan  number 10, Enzo Francescoli) the ways to play football properly.

He is the only footballer I know of to have a unique documentary made about him. Zidane: a 21 st century portrait is not your typical warts and all DVD. Using 18 high definition cameras and set to a soundtrack by Scottish art band, Mogwai , the player was recorded for an entire 90 minutes against Villareal. I implore you to watch a master at work.

Elizabeth Lambert is now an internet villain, thanks to a video that features her taking down another player with a pony tail pull.

In her defense it can be pointed out that many of the incidents followed a provocation from the other team. For example, she does not do the pony tail take down (PTTD) until after the other player grabs her shorts. Such a response would tend to deter other players from attempting the same sort of thing and, as the saying goes, if you start something you have to expect that the other person might decide to try to finish it right then and there.

Of course, her responses seem to exceed the provocation and hence appear to be unacceptable behavior on the part of an athlete. While a degree of roughness is to be expected in a soccer game, things like a PTTD and kicking the ball into a downed player’s face go beyond this sort of acceptable roughness. There is, after all, the incidental rough contact that goes with playing this sport. But taking down other players or kicking balls into their faces is beyond what is allowed in soccer.  This seems to be clear and indisputable.

Not surprisingly, some folks have claimed that people are being exceptionally critical of Lambert because she is a woman and that such behavior by men would be far more tolerated. However, this does not seem to be the case as was shown by the reaction to Zidane’s infamous head butt. Whether an athlete is male or female, he or she is expected to play within the rules and within the limits of good sportsmanship. Of course, people do still find it more surprising when a female athlete acts violently or loses her temper. This is because social expectations for women are still different.

While what Lambert did is just one incident (and hence not by itself evidence for any general claims), there have been other cases of female athletes behaving badly, thus leading some, such as the folks at CBS,  to speculate whether this will become the norm. Of course, the folks in the media tend to engage in a bit of hyperbole and a few incidents do not constitute a norm. That said, changing social expectations and changes in how gender roles are seen do seem to be allowing women to act more like men. On the downside, this seems to have resulted in a increase in bad behavior on the part of some women. This is to be expected-after all, the traditional expectations for women included not being rough or violent and these expectations tended to be enforced fairly vigorously. In contrast, it was expected that “boys would be boys.” Now we can expect that “girls will be girls.”

Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas ce programme culte diffusé sur TF1 et qui affole Twitter à chaque fois, j’hésite entre vous bannir à vie et tenter de vous expliquer à quel point vous passez à côté d’une émission fabuleuse.

Pour faire simple, Pascal, animateur social et sosie officiel de Zinédine Zidane, vient en aide à des jeunes provinciaux considérés comme “difficiles” parce qu’ils font vivre l’enfer à leur famille en restant assis sur un rond point avec leurs potes loosers jusqu’à 3h du mat, bien souvent parce que leurs parents les ont abandonnés pendant leur enfance et qu’ils n’ont pas assumé leurs responsabilités. Deux coups de pieds dans un sac de frappe, un rangement de chambre et un stage d’une journée dans une entreprise plus tard, l’ado rebelle se transforme en Bisounours qui fait des câlins à toute sa famille, et qui “désormais envisage l’avenir sereinement”.

Pour le prime spécial ambiance “Rendez vous en terre inconnue”, l’équipe s’envolera donc pour le Sénégal avec dans leurs bagages un groupe de jeunes à problèmes encadré par Pascal, et je sens déjà qu’on va avoir droit à des grands discours genre “Tu vois, eux ils ont rien et ils respectent leurs parents, toi tu te plains pour rien” ou “Franchement, je me rends compte que l’école c’est bien en fait”. Dommage, parce que ça aurait été beaucoup plus marrant d’envoyer Pascal à l’abattoir en lui demandant de s’occuper de jeunes issus des quartiers chauds de Dakar. Mais j’y pense: est ce qu’il va emmener Amandine du 38 avec lui?

cerita dimulai saat perhelatan Piala Dunia 2006. tepatnya, saat final. Italy vs France. gw,yang notabene bukan fans fanatik keduanya, bukan juga ngejagoin salah satunya, bukan juga memprediksi mereka yang akan terjun di final, memilih untuk lebih mendukung Perancis sebagai world cup champion. ada beberapa pemain Perancis yang gw suka, sebut aja zidane, vieira, dan trezeguet.

first half dan second half pun berjalan. skor berakhir dengan imbang, sehingga perlu diadakan babak tambahan. pertandingan berjalan terusss, sampe ada insiden zidane-materazzi. hmm,pasti belom pada lupa dan nggak akan pada lupa sama insiden ini. saat itu zidane menjabat sebagai kapten. dan insiden itu terjadi tiba-tiba banget. awalnya gw ga terlalu ngeh, tapi siaran ulangnya sering banget dan gw cuma bisa bereaksi “owwwwwwww……”. di tengah sebuah final, seorang kapten, lebih lagi seorang zinedine zidane, melakukan tandukan sama pemain lawan. gw cuma bisa senyum-senyum sendiri nontoninnya.

hari-hari berikutnya setelah final menjadi hari yang penuh gosip tentang insiden itu. ga berhenti-berhenti. karena salah satu imbasnya, zidane di kartu merah, pertandingan masuk ke adu pinalty, trezeguet gagal eksekusi, dan ujung-ujungnya, ITALY yang keluar jadi juara. yang harusnya gw bayangin seorang zinedine zidane yang akan ngangkat trofi dan bawa trofinya ke prancis, ini malah fabio cannavaro. life is so unpredictable!! yaa..itu sih diluar mungkin memang italy lebih jago atau gimana lah, tp gw tetep ga nyangka endingnya akan seperti ini. dan sampai saat ini zidane juga masih bungkam, cuma ada berita2 yang beredar kalo materazzi ngomong rasis. dan mulai detik itu gw ga suka pisan ama si materazzi. hehehehe. tp sekarang udah bodo amat sihh.

itu sebabnya, manusia itu makhluk yang sosial. kalo dia udah sempurna, buat apa dia butuh orang lain. we need each other, to complete us, to make a change, to live a better world, to reach a world peace (miss universe ceritanya).

L’association ELA et Zinédine Zidane, son parrain emblématique, sont fiers d’annoncer cette première mondiale: les résultats de la thérapie génique de l’adrénoleucodystrophie (ALD) menée par le Dr Nathalie Cartier et le Pr Patrick Aubourg de lìhôpital Saint-Vincent de-Paul à Paris (France) viennent dìêtre publiés dans la prestigieuse revue Science. Trois enfants ont été traités et leur maladie a été arrêtée. Ils vont bien, ce qui est inespéré pour cette maladie qui peut détruire en quelques mois le cerveau dìun enfant jusque là bien portant. Cette découverte ouvre également des perspectives de traitement pour dìautres maladies plus fréquentes. La thérapie génique de l’adrénoleucodystrophie une première mondiale L’adrénoleucodystrophie (ALD) est la forme de leucodystrophie la plus fréquente. Elle représente près de 30% des cas de leucodystrophies recensés par l’association ELA. Chaque année, 5 bébés naissent en Belgique (230 en europe) atteints d’ALD, mais le décès intervient souvent durant l’enfance. Une découverte qui va profiter à d’autres maladies plus fréquentes Aujourd’hui, ELA est d’autant plus fière du résultat que cette approche innovante ouvre des perspectives de traitement pour d’autres types de leucodystrophie et surtout pour d’autres maladies plus fréquentes (drépanocytose, béta-thalassémie et de multiples immunodéficiences, hémophilie, parkinson,..) qui pourraient bénéficier d’un traitement similaire de thérapie génique avec un vecteur de thérapie génique dérivé du virus VIH. ‘Le succès d’une association de parents qui se bat depuis 17 ans Créée en 1992 par Guy Alba, parent d’un enfant ALD, avec la complicité du Pr Aubourg, Président du conseil scientifique jusqu?en 2008, ELA réunit des familles concernées par les leucodystrophies, maladies génétiques qui détruisent la myéline (gaine des nerfs) du cerveau. Depuis sa création, ELA poursuit les mêmes objectifs : aider les malades, rassembler les familles et financer la recherche médicale. Pour accélérer la découverte d’un traitement, ELA crée en 2005 sa fondation de recherche avec le soutien du Ministère de la Recherche. Ses efforts et son dynamisme lui permettent de consacrer 30 millions d’euros à la recherche sur l’ensemble des leucodystrophies. En parallèle, ELA est soucieuse des malades et porte une attention particulière à ceux qui ne pourront bénéficier des progrès de la recherche. W kanadyjsko-niemieckiej produkcji mamy natomiast dalsze poszukiwania. Po znalezieniu dwóch elementów pora na kolejnych liderów.

Generalnie bardzo fajny pomysł z takimi etykietkami przypisanymi do koni pociągowych Adidasa. Ok, nie ma tu rozmachu i powielania pomysłu z kultowej reklamy z trzyosobowymi zespołami walczącymi na statku.

Myślę, że w tych spotach droga do celu, jaką jest zbieranie graczy do jednej idealnej ekipy będzie jednocześnie puentą całej kampanii. Wolałbym jednak więcej żywych instrumentów niż grafiki komputerowej, czy komiksu.

The meeting between one world star and the other world star was an issue in itself.

Singer Rain had a surprise encounter with Zinedine Zidane, a world renowned soccer player of France, in Hong Kong, and the image of taking their pose tenderly, was photographed by the local media.

According to Rain’s agency J.Tune entertainment, Rain visited Hong Kong and took part in an event related to the launching of a watch brand, and what Rain and Zidane attended the event, seemed to be captured by the local cameras.

The pictures have been posted on the domestic portal web sites, being moved home. Those who saw Rain’s pictures are expressing their opinions with great joy, “Rain looks great with the suit.” “Rain is shining as a world star even in Hong Kong.” “Since he is with international stars, Rain is creating an atmosphere of a CEO.”

Meanwhile, Rain’s hollywood action film ‘Ninja Assassin’ is coming out, he’ll meet the press on November 23rd in Korea, and the movie will be released on the 26th.

To były czasy, gdy jeszcze nie było youtube, a mecze oglądało się w środy i weekendy. Wtedy wszyscy mówili o Predatorach, a dopiero potem o najnowszych butach od Nike. Teraz adidas nie jest już liderem w wyścigu po strojenie najlepszych piłkarzy i zespołów. (Tutaj bardzo zgrabne porównanie: wpływy Adidasa i Nike). A całkiem niedawno firma zakopała topór wojenny z Pumą.

Wracając do nowej odsłony butów “adasia”: mówisz Predator, myślisz Zidane. Dopiero potem przypominam sobie Alex Del Piero, Raula i innych, których karty zbierało się razem z “Bravo Sport”.

Nie inaczej jest teraz, Zidane powoli przymierza się do wygodnego fotela i nieznanej jeszcze dobrze płatnej posady, ale w tym momencie jest głównym motorem napędowym kampanii Predatora X.

In 2006, we saw the emergence of the new French superstar. Little known Marseille attacking midfielder Franck Ribery made a splash on the international scene during the World Cup 2006. His speed and ability to create plays gave all French supporters hope that we might have already found a replacement for the retiring Zinedine Zidane.

But since those World Cup days, injuries have limited Franck Ribery’s playing time for the national team. And in recent months, even though he has been healthy, Ribery always come off the bench for France, but never starts.

I have talked to a number of French supporters about Ribery, and they are all baffled about why he isn’t seeing more time on the pitch. He is a quality player that needs to be out there on the field, but why does he rarely play anymore?

Simple, France don’t need him.

Yes, i’m going there. I did say it. Raymond Domenech and the French National Team doesn’t need Franck Ribery as their starter. I know many of you think that I am crazy for saying this, but let me explain.

Back in the 2006 World Cup, France had a pretty balanced midfield.  They would run five midfielders, with Makelele and Vieira in the back, with Vieria pushing up. Up front at midfield, Zidane controlled the play in the middle with Ribery on his right and Moulouda on his left.

But even with Ribery on the right, he would always drift to the center toward Zidane and Henry. Moulouda does the same on the left. And even in the few games that he has played for France this year, Ribery usually finds his way to the center of the pitch. Being in the center is just Ribery’s style.

In the 2010 WC qualifying, France looks like a different team than they did just four years ago. Thuram, Wiltord, Sagnol, Zidane and Vieira are gone. And players like Jeremy Toulalan, Moussa Sissoko, Andre-Pierrie Gignac, and Karim Benzema were added. France is a different looking team than the great 2006 squad.

Therefore, as the team has changed, the way that Raymond Domenech has run the team has also change.

Instead of going with the traditional #10 player creating the play up the middle as we have been accustomed to seeing France do for the last 15 years, Domenech has now started moving the ball up the flanks. In addition, Domenech has made his defensive midfield stronger by adding  Lassana Diarra, Jeremy Toulalan and Moussa Sissoko. And usually two of those three players are starting in the central midfield.

As a result of playing this type of system, Domenech doesn’t need Ribery, who seems to be more comfortable as a floating attacking midfielder in the center than he is at the flanks. And, as we all know, Ribery is no defensive midfielder.

So, why did Domenech move from a traditional attacking style of play to a predominate defensive style of play? Only Domenech knows that one.

Therefore, I will go ahead and take a crack at it. Here we go…he has too many strikers. Yes, France is loaded with strikers. Domenech has so many strikers, that he usually he has to put one on the bench. And, as of recent, the player that has been the victim of the bench has been Karim Benzema.

Andre-Pierre Gignac, Nicholas Anelka, Thierry Henry, Karim Benzema, Sidney Govou, Bafe Gomis…the list is endless. Therefore, Domenech has decided to take two of his best passing strikers, Henry and Govou, and put them on the right and left side, while playing Gignac (last year’s Ligue 1 leading scorer) and Anelka (EPL’s leading scorer) up front.

So far, this is all just an experiment. The first year of this format is slowing catching on. Remember, asking players to change the way that they have played for years is quite a hard thing to do. To adapt to a new style of play isn’t easy. And that is exactly what Domenech is asking his players to do.

But the last two games have shown that France can succeed with this formation. Not only did Gignac find the net a number of times, but Henry in that attacking right midfield position also found the next. This new formation has made France more unpredictable and stronger offensively.

On the other hand, the defense has improved as well. France has done a great job shutting down the opposition. France has only allowed nine goals in the 10 WC qualifying matches.

While the defensive line has looked quite impressive, the defensive midfield is playing great as well. I dare to say it, but Jeremy Toulalan is turning into the best ever ‘defensive’ midfielder for France. I know that people don’t want to hear that either, but the games he has played for both France and Lyon have been exceptional. He is the real thing, and will continue to prove himself year after year.

So, when all is said and done, the player that is left out of the equation is Franck Ribery. Yes, the player that many consider France’s best player might not find a place on this French team because he has too much of a tendency to work his way inside. And Domenech has shown in the last few WC qualifying matches that he doesn’t want a floater inside, but someone who can run up the flank, with discipline, and make plays from those positions, not the center.

And also, due to Ribery’s injuries, Domenech can’t rely on having a strong central attacking midfielder. Therefore, he needs to create a plan that doesn’t solely rely on Ribery. And having a #10 centered formation means that Ribery needs to be healthy 100% of the time, or they are screwed.
