Now that almost everyone has finished their fall marathons, it seems like the perfect time for Mr. Pants to address the subject of tapering. OK, a month ago would have been the perfect time. But Mr. Pants is recorded on taper delay. Taper delay. Get it? Boy, I bet this is going to be good …

—

ASK MR. PANTS

Q. My taper is making me crazy. What should I do?

A. No, that’s actually a good sign. You have to be insane to run a marathon. That’s largely the point of marathon training. Ergo, if you’re crazy a couple weeks before it, that’s a sign that you’re hurdling toward the full-on psychosis necessary when you report to the starting line. Mr. Pants really has no idea what he’s saying; he just enjoys using the word “Ergo” now and then. Ergo is advice columnist gold.

—

Q. What’s the difference between a taper and a tapir?

A. A taper is a gradual decrease in mileage, but not intensity, intended to bring the runner to the starting line of a major race with fresh legs. A tapir is a nocturnal animal with a stout body, sturdy limbs and a short, flexible proboscis. Hey! This was just a cheap question aimed at making fun of Mr. Pants’ short, flexible proboscis, wasn’t it? Harumph. I hope your aid stations serve Ultima.

—

Q. Although carbo loading is a tapering ritual, I have heard that one should not gorge on pork in the weeks leading up to a marathon. Why is this?

A. Taper worms.

—

Q. Today I had a four-hour Law & Order marathon. Tomorrow is a three-hour CSI marathon. Should I taper?

A. Tapering is the least of your problems. Remote control-induced tendonitis, on the other hand ….

—

Q. I’m hoping for some sort of pre-race celebration, but my only companions are a bunch of tiny insects that latched onto me during my last trail run. Do you have a suggestion for festivities?

Q. Under the circumstances, gentle reader, Mr. Pants sees only one possibility: A Taper Tick Parade.

—

Do you have a question about running, holiday polka music or why it’s always Jesus that shows up on slices of toast and not Tootie from The Facts of Life? Mr. Pants is here for you.

Controversy and the games industry go hand in hand like Ico and Yorda if you’ll forgive the in

Controversy and the games industry go hand in hand like Ico and Yorda if you’ll forgive the incredibly nerdy analogy. And if you’ll forgive that, please forgive my blatant theft of a quote from Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw. Despite it not being an original comment of mine, you know the saying; if the shoe fits and there is no more snug fit for this comment than Left 4 Dead 2.

A comparison to the original Left 4 Dead is inevitable in any review. You can dodge it all you want but in the end, reviewers must face the fact that this is a sequel. So let’s get one thing straight: Left 4 Dead 2 is NOT Left 4 Dead. The underlying principles and gameplay mechanics are all there but so much has changed that a direct comparison between the two is unfair. With that out of the way, let’s get into the sole of Left 4 Dead 2.

Taking things a few steps beyond the traditional point and click affair of the genre, Valve have taken old concepts and utilised them in new and unique ways. Melee weapons are by far not a new idea within first person shooters but they’ve always played a background role, something you rely upon once you’ve exhausted everything else, or a way to humiliate that AWPing scumbag who didn’t have the foresight to move after he killed you last time. There is an impressive array of melee weapons to choose from and, despite what you might have heard, they are not all the same with a different skin, Some are more powerful, some are faster, some even have larger areas of effect. However when it comes right down to it, they all perform the same basic function and once you know how to utilise them it simply becomes a matter of preference whether you prefer a Katana, Cricket Bat, Guitar or any of the other 5 melee weapons in the game.

Valve also more than doubled the selection of weapons available from Left 4 Dead but considering the range of choices back then this may be seen less as an improvement and more as a necessity to add some variety to the mix. You now have a range of primary weapons to choose from all with different attributes to suit every gamer and the introduction of the new pistol (Desert Eagle) is very welcome. Not content with simply providing new weapons however, Valve also gives you a small ability to upgrade them with Laser Sights which increase accuracy dramatically and two new types of ammo; Incendiary and Explosive. These new ammo types either set on fire or stun targets respectively. Nifty little tools which add another element of strategy to the game.

Speaking of strategy, it hits the ground running right from the beginning and if you don’t catch up, you will be left behind and you will die. With the introduction of three new special infected and 4 new uncommon infected, the forces stacked against your chances of survival have greatly increased since last time. Particularly in the new Realism mode, players must work very efficiently as a team if they hope to make it to the end of the campaigns. The difficulty has been stepped up since the previous game and you’ll also find that the pathing on infected has greatly improved along with the number of ways that they can approach you. The “running climaxes”, despite sounding like a dirty movie, really seal the deal in making Left 4 Dead 2 feel like a frantic struggle for survival in a highly dangerous world. It captures the feeling of survival that you might obtain by being the sole surviving team member on a paintball field, or watching from your University Classroom as “zombies” stream past in a game of Humans versus Zombies.

The campaigns are more evocative and story focused than they previously were. There is a much greater emphasis on story this time around and each campaign links to the next, creating a wonderful sense of progression from Dead Center all the way to the thrilling finale of The Parish. Standard old game types are back with Versus rearing its ugly, trash-talk inducing head. Survival, which was a recent addition to Left 4 Dead, returns and little has changed there either. Scavenge is an interesting new game mode similar to versus except the survivors must obtain enough gas to escape and the infected must stop them and I’ve already mentioned Realism mode. In regards to replayability, if you don’t play Left 4 Dead 2 with friends you probably won’t feel like you’ve gotten your moneys worth. This is a game where you really need to play it with other people to obtain the full satisfaction of working together to complete some quite difficult scenarios.

That and the AI is absolutely terrible. No really, there were complaints about the survivor AI back in the original and in a surprising case of back-pedaling, Valve has managed to make the surivor AI worse. Whether this is to further encourage teams and social play I don’t know. Oh there’s another thing I need to mention; you can now form teams and go up against other teams to make Versus and Scavenge matches a little more balanced for Average Joe who just hits “quick match”. I don’t know if this will really catapult Left 4 Dead 2 into the competitive market but you never know.

In the end, what is Left 4 Dead 2? It’s certainly fun. I would say it’s a lot more fun than the original Left 4 Dead, but I still don’t agree that it’s a sequel. To me, Left 4 Dead 2 feels more like the final release of a beta. A beta I had to pay fifty US dollars for. I would go so far as to say that it’s worth the investment, with the caveat that the original Left 4 Dead was not. Having seen how much they were able to improve upon in one year and knowing that it certainly wouldn’t have taken them that long to impliment these changes in the original game I can’t help but feel a little bit cheated out of money that I had a year ago. So I’d put this up as a recommendation. It’s a fun game with truly interesting concepts and I’m not going to get into the whole censorship debacle because we’re saving that for a different article. Enjoy your zombie killing mayhem!

GREETINGS ALL !

Alright.

Tia and I were talking last night and she brought up a really good point. Well… to be honest…she has a lot of really good points. But don’t tell her I said that because at THAT point, I’d never win an argument with her ever, ever again.

She mentioned the fact that since issue one of GaijinpunK is pretty much in the can and publication is not too far away, we should give something back to the friends, the fans and all the courageous people that have stood shoulder to shoulder (and sometimes back to back!) with us against the ninja turd-burglars over the last year and change.

SO! We’re going to give away two of the pages that are being used in the upcoming GaijinpunK issue #1!

But not just any two. WE’RE GIVING AWAY A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD! That’s right, we went “old school”! Not many books publish double page spreads any more (that’s where 2 comic pages fit together to make one gigantic panel). I loved them myself, and I try to put at least one in every book I produce. So, one of you gets to walk away with one!

And we’re going to do this right. We’re going to have a drawing.

You leave a comment, you get entered into the drawing. There is no “entry fee” or any other crap like that.
I’ll number the posts, Hawk’s going to put numbers on all the ping-pong balls with a Sharpie and Tia’s going to draw the winner X-mas day.

The cut off for this contest is going to be MIDNIGHT DECEMBER 24TH eastern standard time. As long as your post is in before then, you’re in. After midnight though, sorry but it won’t be eligible.

As many of you know, Left4dead 2 came out about a week ago, ive been playing this game for a while and recommend it for hours and hours of fun. But Left4dead 2??? Its basically the same concept of the first game with new zombies, a few new weapons and new levels, other than that, its the same game!!

Honestly, would you spend another 50 bucks for almost the same game? Don’t get me wrong, the first one was great, but the second one… I don’t think so. Some of the new zombies look pretty interesting though, I looked all around and haven’t been able to find out anything about the new special infected, so im posting it here for you guys:

Charger: Some people say its like a second tank, the charger is a new special infected that’s able to grab a human survivor and seperate him from his teammates but dragging him in his right arm into a wall or a solid object, after that the Charger continues to pound them into the ground until an ally is able to free them. The Charger is supposed to do massive damage.

Jockey: Ok this one made me laugh, its called the Jocket, it kind of looks like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, that aside, its able to jump on to the survivors head and attack them while giving control as to which direction to move the human survivor, its great for separating the survivors apart.

Spitter: This new infected looked kind of lame to me, nothing really interesting and not much strategy involved, but its main goal is to spit a acid phlegm bomb onto the survivors, this works especially well when the survivors are cornered. When the Spitter dies, it leaves a puddle that does the same amount of damage as her spit bomb. She is very useful when it comes to igniting gas cans when the survivors are near them, but other than that, shes done.

Wandering Witch: Ok this is pretty cool, the Witch that always sat and cried and sometimes glitched when the survivors would get near her is back and this time with a vengeance, she gets to wander around in this game during the day and can sneak up on the survivors at any given moment, she also cries less and im told that she can sing?? uhh oookay… This way the survivors will have a harder time killing her.

The other 4 old infected characters still remain as Smoker, Hunter, Tank and Boomer. There is also some new survivors which include Coach, Ellis, Nick, and Rochelle. The up side to this game is, you get a new selection of zombies which can put u in some great positions and it doesn’t get tiring playing the same old 4 infected anymore, here you have variety and alot of cool new stuff.

I just wanna play the new infected, but other than that, its the same game.. Stay tuned.

Colombus et Tallahassee forment un duo typique bad-ass/maigrichon et le scénario est prévisible, mais j’étais vendu d’avance et c’est un genre d’humour noir et pince sans rire que j’aime bien.

When a genre convention is hot, there’s the temptation for writers to jump on the bandwagon and cater to that convention wholesale, in the hopes of “riding the wave”. Concurrently, zombies are the vehicles of choice in horror fiction for many writers these days. There’s Star Wars zombies, (decently enough done), literary zombies, and even zombie haiku.

“Rot”, Michele Lee’s entry into the zombie pantheon, does something a bit different with zombies. She personifies them, gives them emotions and feelings and a painful humanity…then stuffs them into nursing homes and leaves them there, neglected, abused…left to rot.

Retired from the military, Dean is no stranger to death. Here at Silver Springs Specialty Care Community, however, he’s faced with something that gives him pause: not death, but the reanimated dead. Silver Springs is a special kind of nursing home housing corpses reanimated by grieving family members.

Like many traditional nursing homes, however, these residents are kept “alive” more to assuage their family members’ guilt than for their own welfare. They’re treated with a dismissive, wary neglect, or in worst cases they’re often abused, both sexually and physically. Dean’s job is simple. Calling upon his military background, he’s prepared to deal with a zombie’s inevitable loss of control over their cravings for human flesh.

Slowly, Dean gets acquainted with two zombies freshly reanimated from the grave, Patrick and Amy, who work at Silver Springs in a voluntary capacity…for now. Until they become too “hungry”. In them, Dean sees a humanity lacking in their keepers; also comes to understand what it means to be reanimated, then discarded. And, when Amy turns up missing and Dean discovers the rotten core that festers at the heart of Silver Springs, his relationship with these two discarded undead leads him on a mission to expose the undead’s plight to the world.

Whether the social commentary on nursing homes in general is intentional or not, Lee does the best thing a writer can do with an often-used convention. She twists it back upon itself and uses it as commentary on the human experience, but in the process she doesn’t “de-fang” zombies. Their hunger for human flesh is inevitable. They are, indeed, still monsters, but in this case Lee asks readers to consider which is worse: the undead, or those who reanimate them.

Every now and then you run into something that is simply so AWESOME (notice all caps), that you can’t justify passing it by. For me this something – or the latest in line – was a t-shirt that I found on Threadless, named The Horde. It’s designed by Aled Lewis, and features the wonderful image below of a lone survivor stalling the inevitable. That’s just so amazingly AWESOME that I had to order two. The price? 6€ each, due to Threadless’ holiday sale.

Click to go to Threadless

I suggest you browse through the Threadless site. There are loads of cool t-shirts and hoodies available, and The Horde isn’t the only one available with a zombie theme, check out Zombie Food and The Red for two fine examples.

I haven’t made up my mind on the Wargames Factory plastic zombies. They look okay(ish) in some pictures, and utterly terrible in others. Some people in the hobby are calling them the most AWESOME thing since the last one, while others are stomping them to the ground for all their faults.

Being a zombie (and a miniature) blogger, I felt that I simply had to know first hand. With Wargames Factory having their Black Friday free shipping day, I put in an order for two zombie packs. With the Euro so strong vs. USD, the price for the 48 miniatures amounted to a little over 20€. If they’re truly horrible, it’s not a big loss, and if they’re ok, I just bought me 48 miniatures for under 0.50€ each. It’s not like I have other miniatures waiting to get painted, right?

Click to go to Wargames Factory

This should give me my zombie fix for a while, and for a pittance too. I’m slowly getting back on track with my painting as well, so I hope to get back to more frequent posting in the near future!

Zombieland, the new zombie-comedy by Ruben Fleisher, aims to add deliberate laughs to the zombie corner of the horror universe. Instead of pulling of this tricky balancing act (like Shaun of the Dean or the original Dawn of the Dead), Zombieland feels more like an elaborate video game narrated by the guy from “Scrubs.”

Not that the film is horrible. It is quite watchable; but the narrative laziness on display throughout stopped me from truly enjoying the experience. The story follows Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), a geek/loner who hooks up with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) to form a zombie ass-kicking duo. Columbus narrates the film, relating his list of commandments for survival and Gen-Y neurosis. When he introduces or refers back to something from the list, it appears written on the screen in that 3-D looking font used in the credits of “Lost” and Panic Room. I got the feeling that the screenwriters didn’t trust the material (or audience) enough to not include zombie gore, ironic voiceover and distracting written cues in every scene. It’s as if they worked backwards from the joke of having a character say that zombies taught him how to love.

There is an amusing cameo moment two-thirds the way through the film, which I will not spoil for the reader. Suffice to say it’s the best five minutes of the film.

It’s commonly known that a drug in turkey meat, Tryptophan, causes sleepiness after eating. But because the Tryptophan levels in turkey are no higher than in most other fowl, why don’t we feel just as tired after ingesting something as common as a chicken sandwich? The effect has everything to do with what else we eat.

Ingestion of a meal rich in carbohydrates triggers the release of insulin, which in turn stimulates the uptake of amino acids into muscle, inadvertently increasing the ratio of Tryptophan in the blood stream. Nutritionist, Randal Farmer, continues:

“Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner drowsiness is the result of a heavy meal rich in carbohydrates which, via an indirect mechanism, increases the production of sleep-promoting melatonin in the brain.”

Without our system’s preoccupation with other matters, Tryptophan would have no impact, and this same indirect causation has been theorized to be a likely trigger of the coming zombie pandemic.

If the necessary ingredients for zombiism are already lying dormant in human beings, then the next undead outbreak may simply require another agent to come along and launch the nightmare. A new strain of flu, bacterial outbreak from tainted food, or changes in environmental conditions may be what it takes to spark the end of the world.

More evidence that the zombie plague could strike at any time for any reason. So don’t eat too much this holiday season. You need to stay alert!

Historia:

10) Undead.

This film is not that old i think it came out around 2003 but I only watched it a few years ago.

The plot of this film is when meteor start land in a small australian town, thats when the Zombie action starts and like many other movies of its kind, you get a small group of survivors that have to face the zombie out break + more.

The Characters in this movie, are pretty good but the one that stands out the most is Mungo McKay who plays such a memorable character called Marion.

Marion dispatches Zombies left right and centre using loads of ingenious methods.

This film is a perfect balance of horror and comedy and reminds me a lot of Brain dead.

This film is a low-budget film, where i believe that the guys that made this film made there own CGI FX themselves (the FX are fantastic)

Anyway I highly recommend this movie to you all, and thats why its my number 10 zombie film.

check out the trailer.

9) Resident evil

Now a lot of people may disagree with me as on this one, but I’m a fan of this film by Paul W.S Anderson because it’s actually quite good.

The film is very loosely based on the ever popular Zombie game by Capcom.

At first when i found out the game had really nothing to do with game i was really disappointed, the only thing they do have in common is Zombies.

The film Starts of with a classic scene where you see how everyone in the laboratory get infected and from there the film does not slow down.

Milla Jovovich is great in the movie and kicks zombie arse while looking absolutely gorgeous in her red dress.

The film look great and has a superb sound track, but the reason i had to include this in my top 10 is because for ages there wasn’t any zombie films and this one came out to satisfy my need for a zombie movie.

This film has some classic Scenes (the one with the lasers),

This film might not be the greatest zombie film but is a fun ride through out and defiantly worth watching.

check out the trailer down below to see what i mean:)

 Zombie Land

Now Know this film is new but it is that good and thats why it’s in my top 10 at number 9.

The thing with Zombie Land that I love is the violence, I love the films use of killing the zombies, there is so many ingenious ways of killing them, The characters are all fantastic Woody Harrleson is on top form and how can we forget the cameo from the great actor ever:)

7) Brain dead

Most people now a days only to tend to think of Peter Jackson as just the Director of the King Kong remake and of course the Lord of the rings trilogy, But those of us who love our horror movies will of course remember him from his early work.

Braindead is a combination of horror and comedy,it has that same sort of style as Sam Raimis evil dead movies and in the respect its works fantastically.

The film sees our hapless unlucky in love hero who life in theory should actually get better when he meets the woman of his dreams, from here on the film really doesnt slow down at all as the film includes so many memorable moments.

Over bearing mothers,Rat monkeys,puss falling into food,zombie out break,kung fu priest,and a zombie baby +loads more.

if you havent seen this film check out the trailer and then go and buy the dvd.

6) Day of the dead

The 3rd in the Romero series,Now what works about this film is really does feel like the world has been taken over by Zombies and it has a feeling of no hope left and the Zombies will really take over.

From the opening scenes where our heros fly over a town on a helicopter and try to look for survivors, and everything looks calm and dreary, as our heros land in the town and call out if anyones there and you see the zombies start stepping out of their hiding places the film really begins.

The Film is mostly set in an underground Army facility, The army base also too feels lonely and dreary and with a fantastic cast and a great story line this film really does show what a great director Romeros once was.

I don’t know about you, but ever since the whole “2012″ thing started up, there have been ALOT of articles on the web about how to survive a zombie uprising.

Now I myself feel quite prepared because of this (I have my head shots timed to perfection and a year’s supply of Mike and Ike’s). But I can’t help but wonder why there has been a rush of these survival guides.

I don’t know if the ancient Mayan civilisation predicted an undead army who would strike the earth rendering it lifeless…if they did, that would be impressive. Perhaps they predicted that they would come back…maybe we should be preparing for a Mayan takeover?

Then again, this could all be some overly dramatic ruse, we tend to go through these every so often…like economic recessions.

Stay safe!

“Selena and her new comrades have faced the Infected, but how will they fare against all the firepower used to enforce the U.K. quarantine? The pulse-pounding conclusion to the first story arc ends here, and the crew will never be the same again!“

Artwork: 3.8 out of 5
This series has such a great look to it. Each issues is so consistent with the one before it. The colors shine and the covers rock. While this issue was a slower issue the mood was easily set by the subtle visuals that just have that look where you know things are moving at another pace. Great job on the coloring to get that effect.

Story: 3.5 out of 5
This issue pulls in the conclusion of the first arc. So it’s a slower issue that does a great job setting up for whats to come. There was one nice action scene but it wasn’t as much as past issues have given us. Just a great way to transition from one storyline to the next.

Dying Breath: 3.7 out of 5

This issue looks great, mostly done by the use of colors, and packs a great story that allows it to transition from one story line to the next smoothly. I am loving this series so far because I think it is doing a great job to bridge the two films. While this issue was moving at a slower pace it does a great job progressing the story and just delivers in the end.
