J’ai choisi cette publicité non pas parce qu’elle véhicule des stéréotyopes mais parce qu’elle intègre assez bien, selon moi, l’identité des jeunes et plus particulièrement des jeunes martiniquais. Cette pub ne ressemble en rien à une publicité d’une banque que nous pourrions voir en métropole parce qu’elle paraît moins institutionnalisée.

Elle met en scène une jeune femme qui cherche  à gérer son argent et qui après avoir ouvert son compte au Crédit Mutuel peut vivre la vie d’une jeune femme épanouie qui fait du shopping, voit ses amis et va à la plage.

Je pense qu’il s’agit ici d’un bon exemple de publicité qui ne stéréotype pas ou peu et où la diversité est très bien intégrée.

Friday

Okay friday was lame. Met up with Glenn to spend quality time together but we wound up meeting his camp mates and played video games at the arcade, sloshing out the few remaining dollars we have. Everyone seem so young, even though quite a number of them are recent poly graduates who are the same age as me. There’s this guy who went to pull the back of Glenn’s G-STAR shirt to see if it’s real and I was thinking this guy has to be from SP Biz and I was right man. Didn’t realize the extent of Geok’s words. Gosh, these people are majorly stupid. Period.

Oh, I had some Indian desserts.There’s this white round sweet that you guys should try. It’s a cross between white chocolate and the chinese rabbit sweet imo and it was sinful but very very delicious.

Saturday

Glenn hit my hand while talking, my phone flew out of its case, hit the floor and got scratches. I cried on the spot. Gosh! It’s a new phone and I barely had it for a month! I won’t have another new phone in 2 years man! I was MAJORLY upset. I can’t wait for the screen protector and casing to come so that I can quickly embalm it and do my best to prevent any mishaps from happening once more.

So, I went to Zouk on Saturday. First time clubbing with Linus, Cherie, Liana and Stef. It’s really weird in the sense that while we drink together, we go our seperate ways once we are done with drinking. Azi, Jean and I were in Zouk while the rest hurried off to Phuture. I didn’t really think I would enjoy Benny Benassi, Man, I had a lot of opinions of him after watching the videos. Women are overtly sexualised in the most derogatory manner and that did not sit well with me. The music was awesome though. I did not have much to drink but I danced the night away. Okay, I admit, I was thinking “Peng, treat this as a kickboxing session and just work your thighs! “. The crowd got so intense that I had to leave to get a breather because I was getting claustrophobic. After I return, I think I got humped by a couple of douche even though bf is right with me and I was in the middle of a drug ring. I could see people passing around little aluminum foil wrapped tablets and sniffing stuff and I was like ARGH! I GOTTA GET OUT OF HERE! I remember Andy’s story about drug raids in clubs. Even though they know that someone else has pushed the drugs in the girls’ hands and the girls were completely innocent, they were the ones arrested because the drugs were in their possession at the moment that they were raiding. Just as we were about to find the rest and tell them we were leaving, we found S & C drunk. It was a pretty sight, but I have to admit it was very amusing. LL was upset though. AHH! What a night. I truly think I have outgrown clubbing. I have never danced this hard before, especially to House music, but I really don’t enjoy the environment.

When I first started clubbing, I guess I was really fascinated by the whole clubbing scene and how there are so many beautiful people. In addition, there is also the memory of how only the IT girls back in school clubs. It has to be the secret desire to attain the status of being fabulous and beautiful. I have yet to reach there, but at the moment I am happy to be myself. I find it hard to believe that I am saying that I am actually strong and confident enough to stand on my own now instead of chasing after another person’s shadow.

Sunday

Terrible day. Glenn coerced me into watching Twilight. It was just like any other dvd renting day. I still have yet to win my bid to watch Vanity Fair (and another ton of old English movies) and in the end we got the shows that Glenn wanted to watch since tomorrow is his dooms day: 17 Again and Twilight. 17 again was entertaining, especially Ned and his antics and Zac Efron has proven himself to be more than a pretty face but OMMFG, TWILIGHT WAS A MAJOR SNOOZE FEST PLEASE! I used to think that Perez Hilton was really mean for demeaning Kristen Stewart but dude, I’m with you now! She has next to zero happy expressions and she looked extremely constipated 99% of the time. Robert Pattinson is charming though. I can imagine why girls are going crazy over him. If anyone of you wants to torture me, you can send me to watch New Moon and it will be the perfect torture chamber.

Seeing as it was my last Saturday night in Singapore ( and   ) .   Ragnhild, Alex, and I decided to get dolled up, have a nice dinner at Clarke Quay, and then go dancing at two of Singapore’s hottest clubs Attica and Zouk.

Alex’s personal style is a true reflection of her yogi lifestyle.  She’s always dressed a little tomboyish in oversized drapey knits and luxurious scarves that she cocoons herself in.  Alex is a true scarf lady.  No matter how hot or cold, she always has on a scarf.  Here she’s wearing a particularly beautiful Junk de Luxe black number.

Oh and gentlemen!  Gorgeous Alex is single!  If you’re an intelligent, tall, well-off yogi.  I can get you two in touch. 

Her very cool bracelets are from places she’s lived, such as Barcelona, London, and France.

I’m loving her layered jade and silver rings with her green clutch.

Now on to me.  I didn’t bring that many clothes with me for this trip so I had to improvise a little by creating a top out of this scarf.  How’d I do it?  I tied two ends around my neck to create a halter and the other two ends around my waist.  All of the excess fabric then drapes beautifully around the body.  Simple as that.  And tres moderne, don’t you think?  I love the volume of this top with my carrot fit pants.

This is the over-flowing dance floor at Zouk around 3AM.  The place was PACKED!  It was actually really difficult to move, much less dance.  But it was cool to experience the place since I’d been hearing about it ever since I arrived in Singapore.  The crowd is a mostly Singaporeans with a smattering of ex-pats.  The music was great and the energy was amazing.  Everyone was there to have a good time.  There wasn’t any pretentiosness at all, which I loved.  Just good times all around.

Alex and I ended up dancing on the stairs down to the dancefloor since there seemed to be more room there than on the dancefloor itself.

So much fun!

Less than a week to go and so much to do (both work and play) this week before I head back to New York on Saturday.

It’s the fleamarket weekend!

I went for the fleamarkets at Home Club and 8Q SAM today. It’s pretty interesting to know that 8Q SAM is so named because it is on 8 Queen Street.

The first Flea Market that I went to was the one at Home Club. Though it is a relatively small area, there is still enough walking space. Glenn bought two really awesome shirts for only $25 and I got 2 pre-loved necklacese at $5 each. One is of a super huge owl and the other is a key with bird. Maybe I’ll take picture of it someday. I also got this really falling apart belt that is really vintagey and cool. I’ll see what I can do to salvage it. The owner that I bought the stuff from happened to be someone who went Prodigy with Glenn. What a coincidence!

Between Home Club and 8Q SAM, there was quite a bit of buffer time coz the fleamarket at 8Q SAM only starts at 6pm. Went to Novena church with Glenn. What a joke it was! I really try hard to pray and be all, erm, Catholic, but seriously, I think I was having like a huge argument with whoever’s up there who’s listening to me about the poverty and illnesses etc etc and in the end I gave up trying to speak to whoever’s up there. Sorry. No can do.

Head over to one of the shopping malls around there. There’s this black dress at FOND that looked really sweet on me. Nothing skimpy. It has puffed up cap sleeve, the front is pleated and it ends just above the knee. I swear, this would be the perfect outfit for me to attend openings with, especially the next huge exhibition at ACM featuring treasures from Dubai’s royalty! Can’t wait!

Head over to 8Q SAM next. We were still early so we decided to head out to the galleries since it was free admission and neither of us have been there. Here’s some pictures so bear with me.

No photos of the facade shot but this was one of the galleries that we spent forever inside. There is a cupboard that u have to walk through. I swear, it’s like NARNIA ! I confess, I’ve never watched Narnia but hey, I’ve read enough MLIAs to know what is NARNIA about. Haha. Yea, so you walk through this cupboard into this starking white corridor filled with sheets of papers and essays. Gosh, it’s like a lazy student’s worst nightmare.

Yup, so through that door you see at the back, we enter another study room where everything was in black and white, including milo tins etc etc. It was SO AWESOME. Me and Glenn went crazy looking around.

We opened one of the closet and guess what we found!!!!

There was a skeleton hidden in the closet! Sad to say, we couldn’t find the skull. Hey MCC person who does blog monitoring. Care to leave a comment as to where is the skull? I’d like to know. We love this gallery by the way.

This section is really interesting because all the works that are put up are done by the public.

The galleries were okay. I prefer the Singapore Art Museum better though. Compared to our last museum visit together to SAM at the start of our relationship, Glenn is far more engaged at 8Q SAM than he was at SAM and I was totally not really interested in the exhibits at all. I still love my workplace the most, right ACM? Haha.

The fleamarket at 8Q SAM was average at most. Nothing exciting other than some vintage that we saw but are definitely way out of out budget. There were plenty of blogshop stuff that only people half my size could wear.

Today was a lovely day well spent. Tomorrow, it’s fleamarket (YES AGAIN) at Zouk and maybe if we are free, we’ll go down to Changi Airport.

P.S. Whether we are free or not depends if I want to spend the time and work on my assignment. YES. Haha.

E você, do que gosta? Hoje almocei com algumas colegas do trabalho e discutíamos sobre coisas que nos dão prazer. Definitivamente, meu maior prazer é dançar! Sempre fui apaixonada por dança e hoje, felizmente, posso dedicar boa parte do meu tempo a essa prática, o que me faz muito feliz.

Recentemente, li um artigo de Stephen Kanitz para a Veja que falava sobre A escolha do seu par. O artigo falava, entre outras coisas, sobre os signos que estão por trás da dança. Palavras dele: “Na dança de salão o homem tem uma série de obrigações, como cuidar da mulher, planejar o rumo, variar os passos, segurar com firmeza e orientar delicadamente o corpo de uma mulher(…)Essa sobrecarga em cima do homem permite à mulher avaliar rapidamente a inteligência do seu par, a sua capacidade de planejamento, a sua reação em situações de stress. A mulher só precisa acompanhá-lo. Ela pode dedicar seu tempo exclusivamente à tarefa de avaliação do homem.”

E a dança de salão é isso mesmo: um momento em que duas pessoas se encontram, quase que em um ritual, de entrega, magia, sedução. Em um mundo em que nós, mulheres, vivenciamos um processo de masculinização, a dança funciona como um escape, onde podemos nos permitir ser apenas damas. Podemos nos deixar conduzir, enxergamos nos braços do cavalheiro o nosso mundo no intervalo de uma música. Ou duas. Ou três. Ou muitas.

Quando estou dançando, sinto que ali está a expressão da minha alma. Lembro da fala do personagem de Richard Gere para J-Lo no filme ´Dança Comigo`. Algo mais ou menos assim: “Quando a vi dançando, era como se você expressasse com o corpo tudo o que sinto aqui dentro”. Chorei, claro. E acho que é isso que sentem todos aqueles casais que nos dão prazer quando assistimos.

A dança, para mim, é também o momento em que me desligo do mundo real, dos bits and bytes da Big Blue, da HP12C, da fatura do cartão de crédito que vai vencer. É apenas dançar, e dançar, e dançar…Acho que é por isso que tenho facilidade em aprender, porque amo muito tudo isso!

Time has really changed. Right now I’m trying to update my blog using my recently acquired iPhone 3gs. It is a little bit of a hassle to update since I tend to be ultra long winded. However, after a while I’ve gotten used to typing on it. It was quite a bitch to sms at first, especially while driving. Yes, I know I’m not suppose to be doing that but it’s just way more convenient than a call. Smsing allows the other person reply at their own convenience although sometimes it’s a little frustrating to wait as well. Haha. Humans are never satisfied.

Anyway, normally it’s kinda hard for me to update in weekends since I don’t have Internet connection at home at the moment. So far, nothing really much has been happening other than Kay and me has kinda settled in a weird sort of relationship. We aren’t dating, that’s for sure; yet he reports to me when he comes back from drinking or partying sessions. Maybe it’s also because we normally chat or sms spam every night. I see him everyday and I’m surprised he hasn’t even avoided me. Today, I had coffee with Kay and some of his friends although his friends left not long after I arrived. He was telling me about how his ex-housemate used to cook for him and such (yes.. A girl) and it freaked him out because he didn’t like her and it was obvious she had intentions. So he avoided her as much as possible. But then, did he forget that I like him a lot too? But he doesn’t avoid me. It’s like saying he does but he did tell me he wasn’t interested in dating anyone.

Last night was Halloween. U didn’t party as how everyone did since I wasn’t really in the mood and I took my son out for a bit. Kay was at Zouk partying yet at the same time he was smsing me quite frequently till about 1.30am. I doubt it was so boring till he wanted to chat with me.

As much as I hope he will eventually fall for me, I sometimes wonder if I’ve fallen into the BFF trap. He still sees me as a woman and he knows for a fact that I’m totally so into him, yet he obliviously say things like “Tell me what you think or feel. It’s better if you’re straightforward”. I said “I don’t want to be rejected twice” and his reply? “why do you think you would be rejected twice?”. Sigh. If only he knows when he says things like that he gives me too much hope.

Should I hope? Or just accept that I might just be his BFF? He said he tend to avoid girls who like him too much. But he knows I like him a lot. I won’t day I’m in love with him since the word ‘love’ has been overused and I don’t want to simply use it anymore. But I’m falling more for him despite his flaws and warped ideas. He pulls at my heartstrings the way many don’t know how to.

Tomorrow I’m on leave and so is he. How coincidental. So most likely I would be spending my time with him. I hope he treasures me and the time we spend together as much as I do. Jay has asked me before to ask him directly what am I to him. I’m scared to ask. I’m too embarassed to ask and partly I might not like the answer.

Well I don’t know what’s going to unfold tomorrow. I just hope it’ll be a memorable day for us.. Of course I hope he’ll fall for me too but… I’m pessimistic… I’m still chicken.

my friend gio sent me a bunch of haitian zouk and kompas this summer that i have been sleeping on for a while. i started listening to zouk in the most roundabout way possible. in my search for kuduro and kwaito a few years back, i stumbled upon a bunch of kizomba tracks.. kizomba is angolan zouk sung in portuguese that migrated over from the caribbean. in the near future, i will post some of my favorite kizombas, but i wanted to share some zouk first.

k&z are really chilled out r&b genres heavily influenced by the older and more dancey kompas. when i’ve shared my appreciation for kizomba/zouk to some of my music nerd friends, they’ve been vaguely derisive about it. it’s really not as musically compelling or exciting as something like kuduro or funana; its not as rootsy as cumbia, or as universally celebrated as soca. it’s just really laidback bar music. when i listen to it, i imagine being in some beach town on a hot night. fans are blowing on the pastel paint-chipped dance floor. a half-drunk couple dances slowly to their favorite jam. yes, i feel these songs.

Today has been a day of meeting,  doing slides, doing slides, checking homework, going out to shop (as a way to get a life), editing presentation speech, and being tired.

I have decided to research on Halloween costumes, the theme is ‘Villianville’ this year at Zouk!

So far my ideas have been:

1. A creepy knife-wielding Little Red Riding Hood

2. Ris Low (but I don’t wanna wear a piece of bigini)

3. Mugatu (from Zoolander; I would have awesome hair).

4. An Arab woman (I can then do girls gone wild by flashing my ankles…actually, I could also be a Victorian era lady as well but that would be a troublesome outfit).

I guess 2 and 4 are out. Not evil.
