Dirgy wall-of-sound type sound, like a herd of elephants pissing on some stalagmites. These are some gooooood stalagmites though: covers of MBV, A-Ha, The Cure etc.

Yacht – See Mystery Lights 

I really liked this when I first heard it, then they had it on in TopMan the other week. What the asymmetrics were listening to for about 5 seconds, I imagine. Sounds a bit like LCD Soundsystem, but with CSS jaunty fun-ness. Good for frolicking.

Bibio – Ambivalence Avenue

WARP-y folk electronica. There’s probably a proper genre name for this kind of thing, but I don’t want to know what it is.

Jeg sovna klokka 8 i går kveld, høhø. Det var ikke så lurt, for nå har jeg ingenting å gjøre, og klokka er halv 4 på natta. Den fine boka Ebba lånte meg glemte jeg jo i Oslo. Bestemor har tydeligvis ryddet rommet mitt mens jeg var bort da. Hmm, det var fint.

Åkey, dette virker kanskje ikke som verdens lureste og fineste budskap, men jeg synes faktisk dette er det fineste ordet som finnes, og det er faktisk helt sant også. Du kan vri så mye du vil på det, men uansett kommer du til å ende opp med denne konklusjonen:

Jemand Bock FIFA 10 online auf der PS3 zu zocken (Meine PSN-ID ist Errrki)? Habe Heute den Teamwork-Modus für mich entdeckt, SAU GEIL! Mein Team gegen Barca, Ich war LOM (linker offensiver Mittelfeldspieler). Barca geht 1:0 in Führung und dann mach Ich so ein Abstaubertor. Danach bekomme Ich in der 45. Minute einen Sahnepass aufgelegt und schiebe einfach nur rein, 2:1 Ich hab das verfickte Spiel gedreht. So ist es dann auch zu Ende gegangen und am Ende wurde Ich als bester Spieler mit 9,nochwas geehrt!

Noen ganger blir jeg så imponert over enkelte band at jeg bare finner det helt nødvendig å dele det med resten av verden. Disse kara fra italia kaller seg Zu og spiller noe wikipedia klassifiserer som matematisk og bråkete punkjazz. Det høres jo ut som en tullete sjanger, og det er det vel også strengt tatt. Dette er ikke musikk vi hører på mens vi sitter i godstolen og leser avisa, men det betyr selvfølgelig ikke at bandet er dårlig.

Det er tre faste medlemmer, en på trommer, en på kontrabass, og en på “death-sax” som han så fint kaller det selv. Så for dere som liker litt galskap med avanserte rytmer og kontrabass med fuzz så bør dere skjekke ut med en gang. Jeg vil uten tvil anbefale det til folk som liker og kjenner til Mike Patton (Fanthômas, Faith No More, Mr Bungle, Tomahawk), Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Monolithic, Meshugga og Alamaailman Vasarat.

Il paesaggio fuori dai finestrini semiaperti dell’autobus grigio n°6 era il solito, per Tino. Solita giornata a raccogliere more, in periferia, dove i campi erano ancora solo parzialmente radioattivi. Frutti da portare alla madre, all’odiata madre, malata di cancro alle orecchie da almeno 40 anni, fiera della sua malattia Statale, che tale era divenuta con l’ultimo decreto malattie.

Con lui, sulla vettura nuovissima, tutta zinco e gelatina, tre soldati russi giocavano a scacchi bevendo sapide birre italiane, mentre due anziani facevano a gara a chi riuscisse prima a portarsi a casa la ragazzina di colore, probabilmente vagabonda, che si offriva a loro con deferenza. Seduto accanto a Tino, in uno di quei sedili pieghevoli tipici degli autobus extraurbani – sedili gommosi, stile “Asimov grey” – sedeva Zu, un albanese dai tratti mediorientali, verde come un oliva, docile come un servo, amico d’infanzia di Tino.

Era l’ultima volta che sedevano vicino. Tutto successe in brevissimo tempo, tra la 3° e la 4° fermata, all’altezza del Palacio de Oñate: salirono in quattro, bene armati, splendidi nei loro completi viola, identici nell’aspetto, maestosi e spaventosi.

Tutti si alzarono: i soldati ubriachi piangendo di gioia – credendosi loro, valorosi servitori della patria, i fortunati agnelli – i vecchi con i loro uccelli in mano, vergognandosi del loro Piacere, la bambina troppo piccola per capire, Tino e Zu, stupiti e sorridenti.

“Chi è il raccoglitore di more”? Chiese il più basso dei quattro, con una voce gelatinosa come i pomelli delle portiere del fortunato mezzo pubblico. “Io, sono io, oh mio Dio, non ci credo, sono io, grazie – e così dicendo Tino baciava gli stivali viola del prestigioso oratore – grazie, lo sapevo che ce l’avrei fatta, finalmente, vi aspettavo da almeno due, che dico, quattro cinque sei anni….oh cazzo, grazie, finalmente”.

“Sì, sì, va bene, togli il tuo muso dai miei stivali, Tin…ti chiami Tino, no?” “Certo sì Tino, io sono Tino l’aschenazita, Tino, Tino il raccoglitore di more…..ma…ma tocca a me, vero?” “Sì, tocca a te, ora”. Gli occhi di Tino si riempirono di lacrime di gioia, mentre i soldati ripresero a giocare, i vecchi a masturbarsi e la bambina a farsi guardare. Zu stringeva per l’ultima volta la mano al suo caro amico, complimentandosi nel suo europeo traballante.

Il più alto dei quattro in divisa prese il lungo coltello per agnelli e sgozzò abilmente (e anche amabilmente) Tino, il giovane raccoglitore di more aschenazita, il nuovo martire, il nuovo passeggero fortunato.

das ist der große, alte effekt der ungerechtigkeit des lebens. verbrecher werden bisweilen noch belohnt, und gutgläubige und ehrliche menschenkinder, die 35 jahre oder so für die QUELLE gearbeitet haben, rutschen nun in die arbeitslosigkeit, und dann – plopp – in hartz IV.

sicher, das war es! neue jobs wird’s nicht geben, im raum nürnberg/fürth. das war’ s dann. HARTZ IV. nach 35 jahren, oder nach 30 jahren, oder nach 25 jahren. danach kommt nichts mehr.

Tak się składa, że przejawia się u mnie okrutny ekshibicjonizm muzyczny, więc czasem sobię coś tu zanucę i nóżka poskacze. Nie będzie to jednak rzewne recenzowanie, na którym wychowałem się prenumerując drzewiej “Tylko Rock”, który swoją drogą dziś, lata po zmianie nazwy na “Teraz Rock” (to musiała być wybuchowa burza tęgich marketoidalnych mózgów) nadaje się w dużej większości tylko do podcierania szanownych czterech liter, a i do tego nieszczególnie jak wie każdy kto z braku laku próbował po ciężkim posiedzeniu “śliskiego” papieru. Jeśli chodzi o muzykę rozrzut mam fatalny, ale pozwolę temu wyjść w praniu.

Główną atrakcją ostatniego zaszczyconego moją obecnością koncertu była grupa Zu, trio rodem z Włoch. Nie lubię etykietek, więc nawet nie będę przeklejał tagów z last.fm. Dość powiedzieć, że do trasowej furgonetki pakują perkusję, bas oraz saksofon i na szczęście wstrzymują się od owijania mikrofonów w makaron. Wprawdzie czasem wpycha im się na scenę niejaki Mike Patton i pierdzi do swoich zabawek, ale najlepiej przyjmuje się Zu czysto instrumentalnie. Patton dla mnie skończył się na “Kill’em all” czyli zaraz po “Angel Dust”. Zu oraz aż trzy supporty grały w ciasnej klitce, która pomieściła jakimś cudem jednak kilkaset osób, gdzie kilka prawdopodobnie jest bliskie liczbie dwa, góra trzy. Na szczęście mam wejścia w niektórych lokalnych klubach i jako osoba nielubiąca rozwydrzonych tłumów, jak i tłumów ogółem, mogłem zająć sobie miejsce na stronie, przy samej scenie, wśród tak zwanego zaplecza technicznego. Z koncertami jest zwykle tak, że wersje utworów odbiegają często brzmieniem, tempem czy samą formą wykonania od wersji płytowej co mnie osobiście nie tyle rozczarowuje co odrobinę zbija z tropu. No co niektórym odpierdoliło, że muszą grać mój ulubiony utwór od tyłu i stojąc na rękach. Zu dało jednak dla odmiany pokaz w skali prawie 1:1 w stosunku do wersji wymęczonej w studiu. Najbardziej dała mi po pysku mnogość dźwięków jakie można wydobyć z prostej gitary basowej (i pierdyliarda efektów na podłodze). No ale dość kadzenia, muzyki się powinno przede wszystkim słuchać, a nie masturbować się słowami na jej temat. No to poszły konie po betonie – ścieżka “Carbon” z ostatniego albumu, “Carboniferous”:

Zgrabnie dają po nerach, matematycznie. Od razu czuć Zorna w ich poczynaniach (ale nie tego z Masady), rzekomy chaos i typowe nie ma zlituj. Mają jednak jakiś swój własny smak. Na “Bromio” Zu też łechta bębenki choć to już trochę delikatniejsze wydawnictwo. A jak Zu i Zorn nie spowodują spontanicznej trepanacji czaszki to podbijam stawkę o Black Engine, który najwyraźniej za nic ma sobie nazywanie się słowem na literę Z i robi swoje na swój ikonoklastyczny bezzetowy sposób. Żegnam się zwyczajowym: niech wam krew nosem pójdzie. A dzieci rodzą się z dodatkową kończyną… I niech skaczą im powieki, raz prawa, dwa razy lewa. Tak, czas spać.

Once upon a time a man and lady blinked and then had a baby called Steffany. She grew up and fast and with many bad habits. One of which – was an addiction and love for shoes (and bags, lollies, chocolate and music – but let’s talk about shoes for now)

Call me crazy but I think shoes tell stories. I mean shoes go with you everywhere, unless you don’t wear shoes. I think shoes say a lot about a person. I mean, a guy can have his outfit totally right… and then you look down, and he’s killed it with the wrong pair of shoes. Shoes make or break an outfit. Shoes should never really just be about comfort, or about wearing them because you have to. I wish I had one pair of shoes for everyday of the year. Unfortunately I don’t, but here’s a peak into the shoes in my wardrobe and a little note about each of them. You might be shocked by how many shoes I own, so I’ve also included prices so you don’t completely freak out.

Despite the height on these Tony Bianco heels, they are a very reliable shoe. No blisters, not too much pain from the height and I tend not to fall over a lot in them.

Can anything be wrong with a $7 pair of shoes!!

KMART – $7

It took me a long time to come around to the whole gladiator sandal type thing. So I bought these real cheap in the off season, thankfully they came back. Sure they cut off your ankles, but they are a fashion must have. So I often wear with jeans.

These were a birthday present from Blaine for my 19th birthday. They’ve been pretty amazing work shoes.

DIANNA FERRARI – PRESENT

I purchased these shoes as part of my new look that I’m working on. A whole lot less corporate and a lot more casual, bohemian, eco friendly.

These are also part of that look. I think I really wore these in during an Anberlin concert. I might have even bled in them. But yeah, I basically just wanted to mention that I saw Anberlin live.

Everyone’s wedding shoes these days are like gross white version of this. Ew.

Invada Invasion

As I arrived, Thought Forms were just taking to the small stage, which is actually based in the foyer. Now, what you have to understand is, the foyer is like the reception of perhaps a posh office block built of glass and it really shouldn’t work, both from an audience perspective and acoustically but nonetheless, the sound is superb and the band wash over us with a sea of fuzz, delay and a big bag of post rock conventions. Nothing too new, but a perfect start to what the evening is to deliver.

Moving up to the main hall, soloist Team Brick is taking to the stage along with the Emerald Ensemble orchestra who are providing the backing for many of the acts tonight. I’ve entered this as a bit of a newcomer to his work, but my traveling companion has promised me the sort of glitchy mess a la Aphex Twin. Tonight however, it’s all a story of strings, drums and female vocalists singing in augmented fourths. It’s eerie, it’s fucking weird and it’s possibly a little too much so early on.

With a quick retreat to the merch stall and the bar, we return to the main hall in time to see Crippled Black Phoenix who had a few excited fans at the bar (“that’s Dave Grohls new band isn’t it?!”). This is ISIS with more melody and perhaps a more audience friendly sound. The addition of the orchestra has lead to something both crushing and beautiful, but importantly, bone crushingly loud. For once, I actually left a venue after a performance and repeatedly said ‘I think that may have been the best thing I’ve ever seen’. Completely spine tingling stuff.

A quick dash downstairs and we’re mid set for Zu, a three piece jazz, spaz, something or other band. It’s tech, it’s fun and it’s clever, it’s clearly fucking bonkers, but even half a set seems a bit too much. Zu however, win many man points on having probably the lowest sounding saxophone I’ve ever heard. I can’t quite make my mind up on whether it was grating or genius. Hmm.

After some refreshments it’s back to the main hall, where we’ve taken our position in the seated stalls for an hour and a half of Mogwai. It’s clear who most people are here to see and it’s apparent the Scottish post-rock pioneers have bought half their country men here with them. Edging more toward the softer sound of their discography with a few heavy numbers chucked in, it drags a little bit and in this case it would have been nicer to have some much louder tracks rather than a longer set. Mogwai however have set the bar for sound tonight and are both clear sounding and completely devastating. When your inner ear vibrates, you know it’s loud.

Heading back to the foyer for the final act, Fuck Buttons are just setting up on stage and appear to be hampered by a few technical problems. After their first full length Street Horrrsing, which combined elements of drone, electronica and dance, they set the bar high for themselves to follow this up. Luckily though, it would appear that Fuck Buttons have just become the best new dance band in the world and the new material is stonking. They’re clearly in to their performance as is the now dwindling crowd who decide to have a rave in front of the stage.

Unfortunately for us, it’s now pretty late and we’ve got a two hour journey to get back home so we leave, impressed, but possibly with the feeling like maybe we’ve witnessed too much. Maybe we’ve just witnessed too much creativity to fully take it in. We dumb down our car journey with Steel Panther’s ‘Feel the Steel’. This is where the review ends. Ahem.

It’d really make a lot more sense if October was the eight month rather than the tenth, wouldn’t it? Oh well.

Thursday the 1st – An Evening With Joan Baez @ Symphony Hall, Birmingham – The evening they drove ol’ Dixie down.

Friday the 2nd till Sunday the 11th – Birmingham Comedy Festival @ various venues in Brum – Part of the grand Birmingham tradition of grouping together a bunch of events that would most likely have happened anyway and calling it a festival. There are still, no doubt, many chuckles and guffaws to be had – checky here for the line-up.

Friday the 2nd – Zu @ The Rainbow, Digbeth, Birmingham – I-talian jazzy metally… I dunno, just bloody lunacy. They were ace at Supersonic.

Saturday the 3rd – Boxing (Warrior Promotions) @ The Holiday Inn, Birmingham – Presumably a dinner show (boo hiss etc). The latest chapter in the ongoing Birmingham vs Black Country derby takes place here, with Eddie McIntosh vs Quinton “Greatest Name Ever” Hillocks.

Sunday the 4th – Kickboxing and MMA (Eclipse) @ Oceana, Wolverhampton – FC kickboxing and amateur MMA, I believe.

Sunday the 4th – Frank Carson @ The Town Hall, Birmingham – It’s the way he tells ‘em.

Monday the 4th – Boxing (Pat Cowdell) @ The Holiday Inn, Birmingham – Another dinner show (boo hiss etc).

Tuesday the 6th till Thursday the 29th – The Birmingham Book Festival @ various venues in Birmingham – This one actually isn’t as per the description of the comedy festival as above. The line-up can be seen here; there are plenty of highlights, including a discussion with the Tindall Street Press Booker Prize nominees on the 8th, talks about David Foster Wallace’s “Infinite Jest” (timely. More soon) and Will Self on the 17th, a thing about J.B. Priestley’s “English Journey” (with his son and, erm, Stuart Maconie. Isn’t he the fella from all of those Channel Four “I Love The Whatsit”/”Top One Hundred Whatsitcalled” programmes?) on the 23rd, and Karen Armstrong speaking about her new “The Case For God” on the 29th.

Wednesday the 7th till Sunday the 11th – Horse Of The Year Show @ The LG Arena, Marston Green, Birmingham – Neigh, neigh and thrice neigh.

Thursday the 8th – Lethal Bizzle @ The Academy 2, Birmingham – Bring some beef you lose some teef POW POW.

Friday the 9th – Boxing (First Team Promotions) @ The Venue, Dudley – I still have no idea where “The Venue” is.

Sunday the 11th – An Afternoon With Pam Ayres @ Symphony Hall, Birmingham – The afternoon they drove ol’ SouthofEngland down.

Sunday the 11th – The Destroyers / The Old Dance School / The Toy Hearts @ The Town Hall, Birmingham – Three of the finest local fun-folk/trad sorts, playing as part of The Town Hall’s 175th anniversary. The Destroyers are obviously the best band ever and you mustn’t say otherwise.

Monday the 12th – Echo & The Bunnymen @ The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton – The band that actually could cut the mustard.

Friday the 16th and Saturday the 17th – “The Idiot Colony” (Red Cape Theatre) @ The Rep Door, Birmingham – A group of women are offered some respite from their confinement in a brutal asylum when they get to talk to each other in the hair salon. Based on true accounts.

Friday the 16th – “Revenger’s Tragedy” (Jadis Shadows theatre company) @ The Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton – With murder and incest and scandal in general. Also on at The Old Rep in Brum the following night and Hall Green Little Theatre (new to me) on the 23rd and 24th.

Saturday the 17th – Dizzee Rascal @ The Academy, Birmingham – There really is very little that’s more fun than saying “bonkers” in a deep voice. Try it right now and you’ll see what I mean.

Tuesday the 20th till Saturday the 31st – “The Grapes Of Wrath” (English Touring Theatre/Chichester Festival Theatre) @ The Rep Theatre, Birmingham – Waitin’ on the ghost of Tom Joad.

Wednesday the 21st – Therapy? @ The Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton – I’m still no closer to figuring it out: how many question marks does one use if asking a question in which the last word is the band name Therapy??

Wednesday the 21st – The Tennessee Three @ The Jam House, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham – Not actually backing Johnny Cash here, for obvious reasons. Luther probably won’t be playing the boogie woogie here either, for similarly obvious reasons.

Friday the 23rd – Morrissey @ Symphony Hall, Birmingham – I don’t think he’s miserable at all, I reckon it’s all just a show.

Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 25th – Spandau Ballet @ The LG Arena, Marston Green, Birmingham – No, they are playing there. It’s (wait for it, wait for it) TRUE.

Sunday the 25th – Editors @ The Civic Hall, Wolverhampton – I still think “Snowfield” was a better name for them, but there you go.

Monday the 26th – The Proclaimers @ Symphony Hall, Birmingham – I don’t think they’re Scottish at all, I reckon it’s all just a show.

Tuesday the 27th – ZZ Top @ The Civic Hall, Wolverhampton – Ah come on now. You’re looking at me as though this needs explaining.

Tuesday the 27th – Billy Talent @ The Academy, Birmingham – Good quality Canadian melodic punk/emo types, and I just now see that apparently they were originally called “Pezz”. Do you remember those “Pez” sweeties, with their own little dispenser-type-things? They were ace. I recall having one with Goofy’s head on. So, anyway, Billy Talent.

Wednesday the 28th till Saturday the 31st – “Dreams Of Violence” (Out Of Joint/Soho Theatre) @ The Rep Door, Birmingham – Political activism (I can’t help but think of the “blowing up a panda” joke from ‘The Young Ones’ every time I hear that phrase) comes easier than a messy homelife for the main character of this play.

Thursday the 29th – Efterklang @ The Asylum, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham – A Danish band who make music that sounds more beautiful live than you can imagine, and I’m assuming you’re someone with a fantastic imagination. Go to this.

Thursday the 29th – Marc Almond @ The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham – Probably the best pop star named after a nut since Johnny Cashew. Or Slipknut.

Friday the 30th and Saturday the 31st – “The Houdini Exposure” (Little Earthquake theatre) @ The Arena Theatre, Wolverhampton – Know what I mean, ‘Arry. A dramatised version of his mission to expose séance Daniel Home as a fraud.

Wie wir bereits berichteten, wird sich Avril Lavigne (24) von ihrem Ehemann Deryck Whibley scheiden lassen. Die „Complicated“-Sängerin soll eingesehen haben, dass sie zu jung geheiratet hat. Sie möchte ihr Leben nun ohne den “Sum 41″-Frontmann entdecken.

Ein Insider sagt: „Avril hat zu jung geheiratet und das auch endlich eingesehen. Sie hat realisiert, dass sie ihr eigenes Leben führen und die Dinge erst einmal für sich allein entdecken muss.“ Der Insider behauptet außerdem, dass Avril und Deryck bereits seit sechs Monaten Probleme in ihrer Ehe hatten. Allerdings konnte er nicht bestätigen, dass die beiden sich wegen Derycks Babywunsch getrennt haben, den Avril ihm nicht erfüllen wollte: „Sie haben sich nicht getrennt, weil Deryck ein Kind haben wollte und auch nicht, weil Avril einen anderen hat.“

Deryck ist bereits aus dem gemeinsamen Haus in Bel Air ausgezogen. Er wurde allerdings nicht von Avril rausgeschmissen, betont der Insider. Avril sagt: „Deryck und ich waren sechseinhalb Jahre zusammen. Wir sind Freunde seit ich 17 bin, waren zusammen, seit ich 19 bin und ich habe ihn geheiratet, als ich 24 war. Ich bin für unsere gemeinsame Zeit sehr dankbar und freue mich darüber, dass wir Freunde bleiben können. Ich bewundere Deryck und habe viel Respekt vor ihm. Er ist die großartigste Person, die ich kenne. Wir haben uns im Guten getrennt.“

Von der Reife dieses jungen Paares könnten sich eine Menge andere Hollywood-Paare eine Scheibe abschneiden. Nicht selten enden ihre Ehen nämlich in einem Rosenkrieg.

An alle Mitglieder und Besucher,

Domenica scorsa, come qualcuno saprà, si è tenuta a New York la cerimonia di premiazione degli MTV Video Music Awards 2009. Tra lacrimosi ricordi di Michael Jackson, svestite reginette del pop e rapper che in un mondo ideale dovrebbero trovarsi in galera o in una fredda fredda tomba, possiamo benissimo immaginare quanto spazio sia stato lasciato al rock, e soprattutto a quale tipo di rock. Basta pensare che 21 Guns dei Green Day ha conquistato il triplice riconoscimento di “Best Rock Video”, “Best Direction in a Video” e “Best Cinematography in a Video”. (Perbacco, dev’essere proprio un videoclip meraviglioso! Peccato che la canzone mi fa alquanto pietà e quindi non lo vedrò mai). Per quanto riguarda l’astrusa categoria “Best Video (That Should Have Won a Moonman)” che, a quanto deduco, tende invece a premiare dei clip un po’ più vecchiotti, trionfano i Beastie Boys con Sabotage (da “Ill Communication” del 1994) alla faccia, tra gli altri, di Foo Fighters (Everlong), Radiohead (Karma Police), U2 (Where the Streets Have No Name) e David Lee Roth (California Girls).

Esistono invece degli awards in cui il premio per il miglior videoclip non va a figli viziati del punk o allegri briganti del crossover, ma a band della caratura dei Mastodon, per merito di quella piccola perla chiamata Oblivion, opening track del loro ultimo lavoro “Crack the Skye”. Sto parlando dei Kerrang! Awards, indetti ogni anno a partire dal 1993 dal noto settimanale rock inglese, la cui cerimonia di premiazione si è tenuta il mese scorso alla Brewery di Moorgate, Londra.

Sono gli Slipknot a uscire particolarmente gaudenti da queste premiazioni: non che fosse una novità, dato l’indirizzo “metalcorecentrico” e un po’ paraculetto della rivista (che pure in tempi assai remoti ha tenuto alta la bandiera della NWOBHM), che l’anno scorso aveva già tributato alla vasta, vasta formazione dell’Iowa il premio per la categoria Icon Awards. Il buon Corey Taylor, oltre a essere uno dei presentatori dell’evento insieme a Scott Ian degli Anthrax, ha ritirato ben due premi per la sua band: quello di migliore live band e quello di migliore band internazionale. Sul primo si può anche discutere, dal momento che le loro performance sono molto violente, coinvolgenti, vissute; per quanto riguarda il secondo, parlerò solo in presenza del mio avvocato.

L’award per l’album più bello dell’ultima annata va a “Death Magnetic” dei Metallica, presenti alla premiazione nella persona di Rob “col cazzo che facevo tutti ’sti soldi nei Suicidal Tendencies” Trujillo (o più brevemente “l’ominide”, come direbbe Psyche), mentre gli altri tre si trovavano amabilmente a svariati fusi orari di distanza per spegnere le ormai troppe candeline sulla torta di James Hetfield.

La “special K” del Best Single va dritta tra le braccia dei Prodigy, il cui brano Omen naturalmente non è rock, ma ho come la sensazione che agli inglesi questo tipo di distinzione non faccia né caldo né freddo. Molto meno indigesta, almeno per il sottoscritto, la scelta dell’award per la miglior band inglese, che riconferma per il secondo anno di fila i Bullet For My Valentine, formazione metalcore originaria del Galles il cui ultimo album “Scream Aim Fire” (uscito ormai da oltre un anno e mezzo) ha avuto successo un po’ dappertutto.

Per quanto riguarda i premi “senza tempo”, ossia non legati ai meriti conseguiti nell’ultima stagione, i Linkin Park si aggiudicano l’award Classic Songwriter, i Limp Bizkit il premio Hall of Fame e i Machine Head l’Inspiration Award. Il prestigioso Icon Award va invece agli Alice In Chains, che tra dieci giorni esatti sforneranno il loro nuovo attesissimo album “Black Gives Way to Blue”, il primo lavoro in studio con il nuovo vocalist William DuVall – e, come ha segnalato giustamente l’amico MattCobain, con la collaborazione di Sir Elton John, che suona il piano nella title track – che rompe un silenzio discografico di quasi 14 anni, tolti naturalmente i vari greatest hits, live e cofanetti. (Per chi non lo sapesse, gli AIC verranno a Milano il 2 dicembre all’Alcatraz di Milano, unica data italiana del loro tour.)

Per spirito di campanilismo spostiamoci ora nella nostra penisola e andiamo a scovare alcune eccellenze nel campo del rock alternativo nostrano. Negli ultimi giorni, infatti, è stata resa nota la lista dei vincitori del Premio Italiano per la Musica Indipendente, la cui cerimonia di premiazione si terrà il 27 novembre al Teatro Masini di Faenza in occasione del MEI (Meeting delle Etichette Indipendenti). Il riconoscimento come miglior band alternativa va agli Zu, una stranissima formazione romana attiva da dieci anni, che ha suonato in tutto il mondo e collaborato con altri folli pazzoidi loro pari quali King Buzzo dei Melvins e un tizio di nome Mike “i Faith No More erano Vivaldi in confronto al casino che faccio adesso” Patton. Il premio per il miglior tour va invece ai Calibro 35, la superband che reinterpreta le colonne sonore dei vecchi film polizieschi italiani e che personalmente ho conosciuto grazie a Passengers, la trasmissione condotta dal dj Ariele su LifeGate Radio. Infine, Manuel Agnelli degli Afterhours ha ricevuto il premio come miglior produttore discografico, grazie al progetto “Il paese è reale”, che coinvolge 19 tra band e artisti solisti della scena rock indipendente italiana, inclusi i già citati Zu e Calibro 35.

Concludo con una piccola e doverosa nota: durante il MEI sarà anche assegnato il premio per il “miglior libro indies” dell’anno: un premio che va all’esimio Edo Rossi, storico dj di Rock FM, con il suo primo lavoro Percorsi musicali indipendenti, di cui potete leggere le prime tre pagine sul sito della Chinaski Edizioni.

Dopo tante divagazioni, ritorniamo ora all’argomento principale di questo post, guardandoci quello che secondo Kerrang! è stato il miglior videoclip dell’ultima stagione, vale a dire Oblivion dei Mastodon. Mettetevi comodi, inizia il viaggio cosmico!
