“That’s why we’ve decided to remove all booking fees. Australian travelers spend over $22m a year paying online booking fees and we think this would be better spent getting on the road, in the air or across the ocean. To show your support all you have to do its become a fan on facebook, luckily you don’t have to remove your pants!”

STOMPer Yi thought he could save money by booking his Jetstar flight via the Zuji website, but ended up paying more, as the ticket did not include baggage allowance.

He said in an email to STOMP today (May 11):

“On Monday (May 4), I booked a Valuair ticket on Zuji, as the price stated was lower than booking directly from the Jetstar website.

“So on May 8, I was shocked when the officer told me that the ticket was a ‘JetSaver Light’, and there was no baggage allowance, but there was no mention of it on the itinerary.

“I was utterly disappointed, I thought that I could save some cash, but ended up paying much more. I had no choice but to pay $108 to check in the baggage.

“Curious, I logged on to Zuji, and sure enough, there was a tiny link that mentioned it on the left hand side of the site:

“‘When traveling on flights operated by Jetstar, you may be offered a Jetsaver Light fare.

“‘JetSaver Light fares do not include a Checked Baggage Allowance.

“‘Fees apply if you are holding a JetSaver Light fare and your bags need to be checked in, up to a weight of 20 kilograms per passenger.’

“Well, there was not a single mention of the ‘JetSaver Light’ fare at all when booking and on the itinerary.

“The only way to find out is to call the Customer Service. But why can’t Zuji explicitly mention it before booking?

“What’s worse is that I still had to pay the baggage when flying off from Jakarta to Singapore.

“I admit that this it was my mistake for not reading the terms and condition properly before booking.

“But I just want to warn fellow STOMPers if they are thinking of booking Valuair/Jetstar flights from Zuji.”

My turn to visit Singapore again after my last visit in April! Surprising enough, when I was searching from my personal favorite online traveling web site (Zuji), I found this deal to Singapore in the Summer holiday for only HK$1050, round Trip plus tax!

My favorite timing as well, letting me to leave office on Friday Night, have the dinner on the flight, rest and wait to meet my girl for the weekend! For the return flight, 6:40am, making it the perfect time to get the ride from Uncle to fetch me to the airport, and then I could be in office again before 12pm!

Lovely schedule. I wish I could stay longer. However, its the annual schooling season during that period of time and I shall not leave the office too long!

This is such a great idea that I think I just pooped my pants just a little. How do you save people money? Forget cutting your costs, because that’s not possible when it comes to travel. Gas. Flights. Travel. Stay. Food. But people shouldn’t forget the holidays. Their holidays. A small celebration of being able to leave their home and happily stay somewhere else. Save people money on other products they buy. How? Create them. Make them. Brand them. Sell the cheap. Beans. Toilet paper. Everything. Great idea.

It’s not the destination, those wise souls say; it’s the journey. But in the case of Travelocity’s Australian offshoot Zuji, it’s not even the journey. The really important thing is that which leads you to said journey. In short, it’s the beans. The incredibly cheap beans.

Zuji has taken a fantastic approach to building their brand in the land where beer does flow and men chunder. Forget the siren song of exotic destinations. Forget ease of use or convenience or travel guarantees. Zuji and their agencies The Hallway/Happy Soldiers figured out that what people could really use is a little help saving up to get away. Which, come to think of it, is kind of the same strategy Teri Garr came up with in “Mr. Mom” for the tuna fish client. And if it’s good enough for Teri, it’s good enough for us.

The basic idea is this. Zuji actually made a line of canned beans and offered them for sale at just ten cents a can. On the label (and in supporting advertising) you got the story that Zuji is helping you save cash to fund your holiday. More details here, if you’re interested. Or there’s the supporting video Zuji put out that says it all quite nicely, including their plan to offer up other cheap basics like toothpaste and toilet paper. It’s all wrapped up with a simple, smart line: Helping holidays happen.

Nicely done.
