To complement my page about Athlone lock on the Shannon, here’s a description of Belmont lock on the Grand Canal. As always, I welcome comments, suggestions or ideas about anything I have omitted or misunderstood.
I have uploaded a report by Sir John MacNeill on experiments with steam boats on the Irish Grand Canal in 1851. The Grand Canal Company evidently asked him to compare two vessels; interestingly, one of them was a twin-screw boat. 23 more words
