Dual meaning?/senseの2つの意味

Senseという英単語には大きく分けて「意味」と「感じる」の二つの意味があるけれど、よく考えたら前者は論理的、後者は感覚的なもので、矛盾するんじゃないか?となんとなく気になっていた。

とはいえ語源を簡単に調べる限りでは、最初から二つの意味が並んで出てきて、どこかで分化したのでもないような。

一方でさらによく考えると、「意味」として使うときは、例えば

1. It doesn’t make sense.

2. common sense

のように、頭で考える意味より、むしろ日本語でいう「腹落ち感」「習慣」のような身体的な理解に近いように思える。つまり、身体感覚としての意味だ。

そう考えると、「意味」と「感じる」の2つの sense は矛盾しない。というより、意味は頭脳、感じるのは身体感覚、と分ける必要もなくて、本来は全体性を持った世界の見方をしていたのかも、と思う。
