After the Rain

After night-long rain we expected the dams to flood over, racing through to the swamp between us and the lagoon. There was so much rain, over 200ml (8 inches) so both overflows were working! 274 more words

A brilliant morning drew us to the beach although the waves were roaring and we did not anticipate a swim! Huge swells associated with the Virgo Full Moon had washed into the lagoon, bringing renewed life from the sea. 266 more words

Always Fresh

I walked down to the sea at high tide this morning. A very high tide, 2 metres! Water was flowing freely over the sand into the lagoon, a rare sight with calm seas. 548 more words

Lines and Patterns

After the storm that swept our beach clean during the week, water continued to flow through the lagoon opening into the sea. I was captivated by the fascinating patterns and lines created by the continual movement of water over sand and around rocks, by the tiny fish swimming upstream towards the safety of the lagoon, by the little bits of debris still being washed out of the usually closed system. 41 more words

Orchids in the Trees

Dendrobium teretifolium, the Thin Pencil Orchid, Rat’s Tail Orchid or Bridal Veil Orchid grows almost exclusively on Casuarina glauca, our dominant local casuarina. With prolific flowers in July and August the orchid is rather spectacular, and fragrant! 250 more words

Birds Like It

After rescuing fish a few days ago we have been back several times to check on the lagoon. Fortunately there were only about six larger fish floating dead, so we were relieved to have rescued most of them. 160 more words
